Ep 119Ep. 119: Recovery Is The New Black

E

Is recovery the new black? Is sober becoming the new cool? With the rise in the sober-curious movement, Dry January and Sober October, sober influencers and the growth in the non-alcoholic drinks movement it seems like sobriety is all the rage. Articles in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Forbes and stories on The Today Show and in wellness and fashion magazines are increasingly referencing “the sober curious movement” - the rise of people experimenting with sobriety for mental and physical health reasons and do not consider themselves addicted to a substance. Michelle Smith of Recovery Is The New Black has joined me to talk about the growth in the “sober curious is cool'' movement. Ep 118Ep. 118: How To Be A Mindful Drinker

E

What does it mean to be a “mindful drinker”? Mindful drinking is about becoming more aware of how your body and mind are affected by alcohol, and how you use alcohol to relate to the people around you. Mindful drinkers notice, learn and ultimately take control of their drinking. Today I'm welcoming Laura Willoughby, the co-founder of Club Soda, the mindful drinking movement. Club Soda’s mission is to make mindful drinking widely accepted so that everyone feels confident to change their drinking habits if they want to and to make sure that people who aren’t drinking alcohol are just as comfortable as drinkers who are, especially in social spaces where alcohol is served. Ep 117Ep. 117: The Problem With Using Alcohol To Joke About Parenting

E

It’s time to stop using alcohol to joke about parenting. If you look up for a minute you’ll see the wine mom humor all around you. On birthday cards at grocery stores, on cute hand towels and wood signs in home decor shops and everywhere on Etsy. “They Whine. I Wine”, “Mom’s Reasons To Drink: My 3 Kids”, “Mommy’s Sippy Cup”, “Mom Juice”, “It takes a village and a vineyard”, “This mom runs on coffee, wine and Amazon Prime”... Funny, right? Or not so much. My guest today is Blair Sharp. Blair wrote An Open Letter to Molly Sims: Please Stop Using Alcohol To Joke About Parenting. She’s here to talk about why the wine mom culture and #iwinesohard “drinking while parenting is funny” shtick normalizes binge drinking and relying on alcohol as a coping tool for motherhood to dangerous results. Ep 116Ep. 116: Perimenopause, Burnout & Alcohol

E

If you’re a woman in your 40s you’re likely both moving into perimenopause hormonally and also navigating one of the busiest times of your life. If you’re also using alcohol to ease the symptoms of burnout and perimenopause the combination can lead to a vicious cycle of heightened anxiety and physical and emotional exhaustion. You might notice that the symptoms of perimenopause are similar to those of alcohol withdrawal and burnout. In fact, alcohol can intensify the more severe symptoms of anxiety and depression experienced in perimenopause. Drinking alcohol also disturbs sleep and women who drink daily are much more likely to experience hot flashes and night sweats. The good news is that if you’re experiencing perimenopause symptoms you’re not alone and you can tap into better ways to cope than drinking through it. My guest today is Wendy McCallum, LLB. Wendy is a Burnout and Alcohol Coach & Wellness Expert and the host of the Bite-Sized Balance Podcast. She’s here to share the many different paths to recovery from burnout, recovery from alcohol and for moving through perimenopause with more ease and less stress. Ep 115Ep. 115: Love, Sex, Intimacy, Attachment Styles & Relationships In Recovery

E

What’s your approach to sex, love and relationships? Do you feel anxiety when you’re in a relationship or avoid intimacy? Do you trust easily or cling to your partner? Do you struggle to communicate your needs and fear rejection or push yourself to be overly self-reliant? Many women drink to smooth the edges of our emotions around relationships, love, sex and intimacy. In today's episode we’re digging into love, sex, intimacy, attachment styles and relationships in recovery. My guest is Dufflyn Lammers, the go-to relationship expert for women in recovery. We’re going to talk about the 4 primary attachment styles and strategies as well as how “earned secure attachment” can be developed in recovery. Your attachment style, developed in childhood, tends to be the primary factor impacting your approach to relationships, love, sex, intimacy, your bodies and yourself. Ep 114Ep. 114: Alcohol, Insomnia + Sleep In Sobriety

E

What questions do you have about alcohol, insomnia and sleep in sobriety? You might be wondering… Does alcohol help you get to sleep? What contributes to good sleep? Why am I so tired in early sobriety? What can I do if I can’t sleep early sobriety? When will I start sleeping well after I stop drinking? So here’s the big question: does alcohol help you sleep? Nope. Alcohol is a sedative that makes you feel sleepy, but it actually significantly decreases your sleep quality (and leads directly to those awful 3am hangxiety wake ups). In fact, a Sleep Foundation study found that for women less than one drink decreases your sleep quality by 9.3%, one drink decreases your sleep quantity by 24% and more than one drink decreases your sleep quality by 39.2%. Ep 113Ep. 113: 20 NEW Questions To Ask Yourself About Your Drinking

E

A lot of women who are worried about their drinking start asking themselves one question: “Am I an Alcoholic?”. The questions that you typically find on an online “Am I An Alcoholic” Quiz are often the wrong questions. Ones that can keep you trapped in the drinking cycle for a long time. The truth is that you don’t need to ask yourself if you’re an “alcoholic” or if you “really have a problem” or if your drinking is “bad enough” that you have to stop to change your relationship with alcohol. My guest today is Deb Masner, founder of the Alcohol Tipping Point and host of The Alcohol Tipping Point Podcast. Deb is going to take us through the 20 questions you should be asking yourself to change your drinking. Ep 112Ep. 112: Create A Better Life Without Alcohol

E

When you’re stopping drinking it’s pretty normal to focus on what you're giving because alcohol is involved in most of your social activities, hobbies and relationships. When I was a ‘red wine girl’ alcohol was a part of cooking dinner, evenings on the couch, date nights, girls nights, work happy hours, Sunday brunches, afternoons at the ballpark, vacations and everything in between. In order to create a better life without alcohol it’s important to add new things to your life that bring you peace, happiness and pleasure when you are removing alcohol. Lori Massicot, midlife sobriety coach and host of the To 50 And Beyond Podcast, has joined me to talk about how to create a better life without alcohol, how to use your time away from alcohol as a period of discovery, why setting boundaries will help you find time to explore new hobbies, and so much more! Ep 109Ep. 109: My Diary Of Early Sobriety From Day 30 to Day 60 Alcohol-Free

E

What should you expect after 30 days of sobriety? I recorded my diary of my first 30-Days alcohol-free (you can listen to it here), but what happens after that first month? You probably have a lot of questions about what happens in your second month without alcohol. I know I did. So I’ve recorded my diary of exactly how I felt, what I did, what was hard and what helped me keep going in my second month of sobriety. I hope it helps you. Ep 108Ep. 108: Sober Awkward

E

Is the fear of feeling awkward in social situations keeping you from trying sober life? I get it. When I was stopped drinking I felt awkward in every part of my life - going to a bar and ordering a non-alcoholic drink, turning down a glass of wine at a friend house, making small talk at a work event without my social lubricant, telling people I wasn’t drinking and let’s not even talk about sober sex! When you stop drinking it can be surprising to realize just how much you’ve relied on alcohol to navigate uncomfortable moments, conversations and social interactions (even with people you love and have known for years)! But you can navigate sober life without feeling awkward - it just takes a bit of practice. Today I'm talking with Victoria Vanstone, co-host of Australia's most popular sobriety podcast, Sober Awkward. Vic is an alcohol free living advocate and passionate about helping others stuck in a pattern of normalized social binge drinking. Ep 107Ep. 107: Living With A Partner Who Drinks When You’re Sober

E

Today we're talking about living with a partner who drinks when you're sober. Maybe your husband or partner is your drinking buddy and going to a bar or sharing drinks at the end of the day is the way you connect and celebrate. Maybe your partner loves drinking too and is resistant to getting the alcohol out of the house. Or perhaps your partner tells you that you “don’t really have a problem”, “are being too hard on yourself” or “should just cut back a bit”. Maybe you don’t want your partner to know how worried you are about your drinking so you want to do this on your own and under the radar. Or perhaps you’ve told your partner that you’re going to take a break from drinking before and then thrown in the towel on Day 5 or Week 2. You might be afraid to tell them you’re trying again because you’re worried you’re just going to fail. Whatever your relationship with your partner is like, if you both drink it’s often deeply intertwined with alcohol. Ep 106Ep. 106: Growing Pains: Releasing Your Past Identity As A Drinker

E

What we drink and how we drink is often deeply intertwined with the image and personality we present to the world, and can also be a part of our own internal identity. As Kristi Coulter wrote in her essay Enjoli, what we drink can be a shorthand for who we are… “A woman with a single-malt scotch is bold and discerning and might fire you from her life if you fuck with her. A woman with a PBR is a Cool Girl who will not be shamed for belching. A woman drinking MommyJuice wine is saying she’s more than the unpaid labor she gave birth to.” Drinking influences our relationships and interactions. It colors what we do, who we spend time with, what we tolerate and the types of boundaries we set (and often the ones we don’t set). And, when you’re ready to stop drinking, there are growing pains related to releasing your past identity as a drinker, as well as relationships and behaviors that may no longer be serving you. My guest today is Hailey Magee. She’s a Codependency Recovery Coach who helps individuals of all ages break the people-pleasing pattern, set empowered boundaries, and master the art of speaking their truth. Ep 105Ep. 105: Midlife Evolution - Embrace Who You Are With The Work of Brené Brown

E

Many women look up in midlife to realize that while their lives look really good on the outside they don’t feel that good on the inside. They’re smart, capable, and productive and work hard everyday to accomplish a lot. They take care of people, managing work deadlines and finances, business trips and family vacations, school conferences and day care pickups. But they’re not as happy as they thought they would be. They’re tired, pulled in a million directions, anxious, overwhelmed, accomplished but unfulfilled. And often women in midlife are drinking too much to reward themselves for getting through it all at the end of the day. The midlife unraveling can also be a time for transformation and evolution. I asked Libby Nelson, a Professional Certified Coach who has trained in the work of Dr. Brené Brown and is a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator, to join me to dive into how to let go of who you think you’re supposed to be and embrace who you really are through the work of Brené Brown. Ep 104Ep. 104: How To Take Break From Drinking

E

Taking a break from drinking can be as simple as unlearning a conditioned and ingrained behavior and approached and addressed without shame, blame or labels. In fact, the social learning model suggests that drug and alcohol use are learned behaviors and that such behaviors persist because of reinforcement from others, your environment, your thoughts and feelings, and from the direct consequences of drug or alcohol use. If you’re struggling to break the habit of drinking you are not required to describe yourself as an “alcoholic”, join a 12-Step program or attend AA meetings. Alcoholics Anonymous programs are one approach to stopping drinking, but not the only one. Ep 103Ep. 103: Dialing Back Pandemic Drinking

E

During the coronavirus pandemic, adults started reaching for the bottle more than ever. An increasing number of Americans responded to the stress, anxiety, isolation, loss and boredom of the pandemic by turning to alcohol. According to a Nielsen study, consumption of alcohol grew amongst adults over the age of 30 by 14% during the pandemic. In 2020 there was a 41 percent increase in the number of days on which women drank heavily, and the rate of adults who reported drinking more to manage pandemic stress was more than twice as high for parents with children between the ages of 5 and 7 . Excessive drinking and alcohol use is proven to negatively impact us in many ways: it can affect our ability to concentrate and get quality sleep. It can also exacerbate depression and anxiety (which is ironically why many people drink – to cope with these issues). Today, we are talking about the backlash against the pandemic fueled surge in alcohol consumption. Ep 102Ep. 102: Anger Management In Sobriety

E

Anger (and the suppression of anger) can be a big trigger for women to drink in sobriety. There’s a reason that people tell you to remember “HALT” when you’re removing alcohol from your life. HALT is an acronym for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, which are four of the most common stressors in recovery. One of the most helpful skills you can learn when you’re quitting drinking is how to manage anger in a healthy way. Both navigating the intensity and effect anger has upon you, as well as how to understand and express your anger without stuffing it down. Michelle Farris, a licensed Psychotherapist and Anger Management Specialist will help you develop tools and coping skills to understand and manage anger in sobriety. Michelle helps codependent people create healthy relationships without sacrificing their big hearts. Ep 101Ep. 101: ADHD, Women & Alcohol

E

Women with ADHD are creative, spontaneous, problem solvers, energetic and have the ability to focus intensely on a project or task. They are also more likely to drink heavily, become reliant on alcohol and are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol on their brains and bodies. In fact, 25% of adults being treated for alcohol and substance use disorders are diagnosed with ADHD and alcohol abuse among people with ADHD is 5 to 10 times more common than it is in people without the condition. As a woman with ADHD you may struggle to focus, be easily distracted, act impulsively, feel restless and have trouble relaxing and unwinding, and because of that the immediate effect of alcohol, you may feel the pull to drink heavily and have a more difficult time moderating alcohol. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a Neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts the brain which controls emotions, learning, self-control and memory. Because of the link between women, ADHD and alcohol abuse I invited Hanna Forrest, an ADHD Specialist who works with neurodiverse adults and children, on the podcast to talk about why women with ADHD often struggle with alcohol and practical tools to manage ADHD while quitting drinking. E

Annie Grace, the author of The Alcohol Experiment and This Naked Mind, has joined me on my 100th episode to shift your perspective on drinking so that you can gain control of alcohol and find freedom. Her work has helped thousands of people understand the impact of alcohol on their lives and dispel widely held beliefs and misconceptions about the benefits of drinking, including that it helps you relax, sleep and connect. Annie’s goal is to help you decide that alcohol is a substance that isn’t making your life better so that you’re able to walk away from alcohol painlessly, genuinely feeling that you no longer want or need to drink. Ep 99Ep. 99: Sober Celebrities

E

Wondering which celebrities are sober and whether any of your favorite actors, musicians and models live alcohol-free? You might be surprised by how many famous people have decided to quit drinking. Personally, I love it when a celebrity comes out to say they've stopped drinking or are questioning the role that alcohol is playing in their lives because it normalizes living alcohol-free and disrupts the narrative that you have to drink to live an exciting, fun and glamorous life. Sober celebrities who talk about their decision to stop drinking can start a larger conversation about alcohol and its role in our lives. Ep 98Ep. 98: Parenting Teens and Tweens Without The Drama

E

Parenting teens and tweens can be a messy time that can bring joy, satisfaction, frustration, worry and a desire to drink to tune it all out. It’s a time when kids are moving out of childhood and into adulthood, but they’re not there yet. Kids in adolescence experience intense emotions, are wired for novelty seeking and start to prioritize peer relationships over parental ones. Because of all of this parenting teenagers can be a personal growth and development workshop for the adults in their lives. The behavior of teenagers can trigger strong emotional reactions in adults, often related more to something unhealed or not processed inside of us. We are triggered by the meaning we are assigning to the behavior, rather than the behavior itself. My guest today, Casey O’Roarty, is here to give you the tools you need to navigate the rollercoaster of parenting your teen or tween without the drama. Casey is a personal growth and development junkie, parent coach, and a positive discipline trainer specialized in working with adolescents. E

What are your first 30 days without alcohol like? What parts are hard and when do you start feeling good? Here's my diary of my first 30 days sober, which turned into 6 years alcohol-free. Tomorrow, February 18, I am hitting 6 years alcohol-free! I can’t believe I haven’t had a sip of alcohol but it's also just another day because not drinking isn't hard anymore. It's the way I live my life. It's my new normal. And it has actually been that way for a long time. The truth is, without alcohol I have met some of the most incredible people and I have had some amazing experiences. It's made me more grounded, more content, less anxious, more brave and more secure in my life. I thought I'd share with you my side of my story through the emails I wrote Belle because I want you to hear the shaky early days of what turned into six years alcohol-free. Ep 96Ep. 96: Alcohol-Free Life: How To Live Happy, Healthy And Sober

E

There are a lot of benefits to choosing an alcohol-free life, but how do you make it a positive choice that you can maintain once the novelty has worn off? Janey Lee Grace, the host of the Alcohol-Free Life podcast, is here to share the secrets of why to ditch the booze and live happy, healthy and sober. As a former gray-area drinker, Janey used to wake up at 3 am hating herself for drinking too much, until the ‘wine witch’ came calling at 6 pm the next day and it started all over again. In 2018 she ditched the booze for ‘Dry January’ and never looked back. Now Janey is a leading voice in changing the conversation around alcohol. She’s the host of the Alcohol-Free Life podcast, founder of The Sober Club, a UK-based BBC presenter, and author of the book, Happy Healthy Sober: Ditch the booze and take control of your life. If you've quit the booze, are sober curious, or thinking about reducing your alcohol intake, tune in as Casey and Janey take a look at the issues around alcohol to inspire you to be happy, healthy and sober! Ep 95Ep. 95: Making Marriage Work After Quitting Drinking

E

How do you make marriage work after quitting drinking? Most marriages have some common patterns and habits that can make or break the relationship. Problematic patterns can be exacerbated when you’re in the drinking cycle and new habits can be helpful once you stop drinking and your relationship is adjusting to a new normal. Because we use alcohol as a coping mechanism, a way to suppress negative emotions, and a tool to connect with the people around us, there is a learning curve to making marriage work after quitting drinking. Even if you have a strong and happy relationship it’s common to feel defensive, resentful, misunderstood, unappreciated, isolated, secretive or lonely when you’re struggling to moderate your drinking. And once you’ve stopped drinking it’s normal to go through a phase where you wonder if you and your spouse know how to communicate or have anything in common. Ep 94Ep. 94: Sobriety, Growth & Personal Development

E

What if drinking isn’t the problem but rather a symptom of the problem? What if it’s masking the deeper personal development work you need to do? What if instead of being a solution, alcohol is sapping your confidence, exacerbating your anxiety and making it harder to connect with others? What if you’re drinking because of fear, limiting beliefs, not feeling good enough, an inability to set healthy boundaries, needing to heal past trauma or break unhealthy patterns? What if removing alcohol could be the first step in growing, changing and returning to yourself? My guest today is Veronica Valli. She’s an author and co-host of the popular podcast, Soberful. With 20 years of experience as a recovery coach and psychotherapist, Veronica has helped thousands of women stop drinking alcohol and transform their lives. Ep 93Ep.93: Diet Culture, Disordered Eating + How To Stop Fighting Food

E

Diet culture is everywhere. NPR reported that in 2021, 50% of all New Year's resolutions in the U.S. were based on fitness, 48% were resolutions to lose weight and 39% of resolutions were to improve one’s diet. We spend over $30 billion on diet products annually and an estimated 45 million Americans diet every year. 85% of women have, at one point in their life, been on some kind of a diet, struggled with body image, or both. And many women who struggle with alcohol also have a complicated relationship with food and their bodies. Our universal immersion in diet culture can also unconsciously sabotage our efforts to stop drinking. When removing alcohol many women worry that they’ll ‘transfer their addiction to food or sugar’ or try to diet at the same time they are working to stop drinking. I invited Isabel Foxen to come on the podcast to talk about diet culture, the socialization of women to believe that being thin equals being healthy, attractive, disciplined and worthy, and the impact of it all. Isabel is a thought leader in intuitive eating and body positive movement and the creator of Stop Fighting Food, a video training series and masterclass for women who want to stop feeling crazy around food. After years of trying to overcome binge eating disorder through weight normative approaches, Isabel discovered the critical role of acceptance, surrender, and social inquiry into binge eating and the recovery process, and has been sharing her insights with clients and professionals ever since. Ep 92Ep. 92: Are You Sober Curious?

E

What does it mean to be “sober curious”? If you’re “sober curious” you likely aren’t sure that you want to give up alcohol forever, but you might wonder if your life would be better without alcohol. Maybe you recognize that alcohol is taking up a significant amount of your time, energy and focus. You wish you were more intentional about your drinking. Or your intuition might be telling you that alcohol isn’t serving you. If you’re sober curious, you’re far from alone. In 2021 23% of Americans who drink regularly participated in Dry January, a month when you abstain from consuming any alcohol for 31 days. To learn more about the sober curious movement I invited Ruby Warrington to join me on the podcast. She’s the author of the books Sober Curious and The Sober Curious Reset and coined the term sober curious. Ruby’s honest and non-judgemental approach to reevaluating our relationship with alcohol has spearheaded a larger movement of people taking a closer look at their drinking. Ep 90Ep. 90: Dry January: Start The New Year Alcohol-Free

E

Are you ready to rock Dry January alcohol-free? I want to give you all the tips to make your Dry January fun, exciting, easy and (most importantly) a success. Dry January is the act of giving up all forms of alcohol for the entirety of the first month of the year. That means no beer, spirits, wine, cocktails, or any other alcohol for 31 days. Dry January began in 2012 as an initiative by Alcohol Change UK to “ditch the hangover, reduce the waistline and save some serious money by giving up alcohol for 31 days.” Millions of people now take part in the challenge each year. To get the most out of Dry January, treat it like an experiment and not a reset. You’re removing alcohol from your life in January to see how good you can feel without it. How does your sleep change? Your thought patterns, habits, interests and relationships? If you are approaching January 31st and you’re feeling happier and healthier without alcohol - stay open to seeing what 60 days without drinking feels like. Keep ongoing. Dry January is the perfect time to take a look at the role alcohol plays in your daily life, in your health choices, and how it makes you feel. Ep 85Ep. 85: Identifying The Change You Want In Your life + Getting Unstuck

E

How do you identify the changes you want in your life and move forward when you feel stuck? What if you have a family you love, a good job and responsibilities that keep you busy and needed but you are thinking “there has to be more than this”? What if you’re comfortable enough, you don’t want to rock the boat and (really) aren’t actually sure what exactly needs to change? But you also feel like you should be happier and more fulfilled than you are right now. On this week's episode, I had the privilege of sitting down with Michael Anthony. He's the founder of Think Unbroken, a best selling author, award winning speaker, entrepreneur, coach, host of the Think Unbroken Podcast and an advocate for adult survivors of childhood trauma. Ep 83Ep. 83: How To Stop Romanticizing Alcohol + Start Romanticizing Sobriety

E

What do Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte + Miranda from Sex And The City, Bridget Jones and Olivia Pope on Scandal have in common? Their shows, characters, sets and plot lines romanticize and glamorize alcohol. TV shows and movies have taught all of us from a very young age that drinking is empowering, sophisticated, fun and ‘the thing’ that modern, independent women do. Through marketing, media and the culture we have been raised in we’re taught that alcohol is both good and necessary and that it should be put on a pedestal. We see drinking as a privilege of adulthood and believe that drinking makes us sophisticated and sexy and also helps us connect and relax. On the flip side we’re taught that life without alcohol is less exciting, undesirable or something that only people with a “real problem” with alcohol would choose. And we’re convinced that life without drinking is difficult, dull and boring. None of which could be further from the truth. Life without alcohol is fun, exciting, healthy and happy. But those ingrained, subconscious or even unconscious beliefs can hold you back when you’re trying to shift your relationship with alcohol. They sabotage your efforts to get healthy and talk about what you’re doing in an empowering way. They hold you back from feeling better and draw you back into old habits that keep you stuck. My guest today is Kate Bee, founder of The Sober School, and we’re talking about how to STOP romanticizing alcohol and START romanticizing sobriety. Ep 82Ep. 82: Sobriety Myths: What Are Your Fears About Life Without Alcohol?

E

If you’re like most women you have a lot of fears and limiting beliefs about what life without alcohol will be like. You might worry that life without happy hours will be boring. Or that people will judge you if you stop drinking. You might believe that the ONLY people who don’t drink are alcoholics or have a “real problem” with alcohol. Or fear that you’ll lose friends and never have fun again if you quit drinking. These negative thoughts around life without alcohol are keeping you from finding out if you might actually be happier, healthier and more confident without booze. Your beliefs are keeping you stuck in a holding pattern. My guest today is Karolina Rzadkowolska. She is a certified alcohol-free life coach who helps powerful women make alcohol insignificant in their lives. She’s worked with thousands of clients through her online courses and coaching to change their drinking habit and unleash a new level of health, happiness, and potential to go after their biggest dreams. E

Have you ever wondered why you crave alcohol? Why do you feel happier when you know you’re going to drink? And why do you feel irritable, restless and discontented when you don’t drink or you’re trying to take a break? Why do you promise yourself in the morning that you’re going to take a break from alcohol and by 6pm you’re opening another bottle of wine? My guest today is Dr. Anna Lembke, Professor of Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine and Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic. In her new book, Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence, Dr. Lembke explains the interconnection of pleasure and pain in the brain and the link between dopamine, overconsumption, instant gratification and addiction. Ep 77Ep. 77: 30 Signs You Should Take A Break From Alcohol

E

Have you been going back and forth about whether you should take a break from drinking but don’t check all the boxes for a person who had a “real problem” with alcohol? That’s the case for a lot of high-achieving women. We think that having a problem with alcohol is black or white. Either you fall into the category of someone who is an alcoholic or has a drinking problem, or you don’t. And heavy drinking is so normalized that it’s easy to dismiss any worries you have about your alcohol consumption by looking at friends and family members who drink like you do. You don’t have to have a drinking problem to have a problematic relationship with alcohol. A lot of women fall into the category of “gray area drinking”, between the extremes of having negative consequences from alcohol consumption and being able to take it or leave it on occasion. And there are a number of early, subtle signs that signal you should take a break from alcohol. My guest today is Janet Gourand, the founder of Tribe Sober. Janet and I are going to dig into 30 early signs you can pick up on, things you might think, feel or do, that signal it’s time to reevaluate your relationship with drinking. Ep 76Ep. 76: Burnout - Signs, Symptoms + How To Recover

E

Do you drink a lot and also feel physically and emotionally burned out? Maybe your life feels unmanageable, work stress is constant, you’re sleeping terribly, tired, empty, unmotivated, overwhelmed or mentally exhausted. The physical and emotional symptoms of burnout often go hand in hand with alcohol use and abuse, and the signs and symptoms of burnout can mimic those of hangovers and alcohol withdrawal. Physical symptoms of burnout can include headaches, neck tension, digestive upset and sleep issues and people experiencing burnout may also feel physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism and detachment, and a feeling of purposelessness. Drinking alcohol can not only exacerbate burnout but also make it difficult to recognize, treat and heal burnout. My guest today is Cait Donovan and we’re talking about “Burnout 101”. She’s going to help us identify burnout and understand how to separate it from the effects of drinking and alcohol withdrawal and identify ways to heal and recover. Ep 75Ep. 75: Make Some Noise: Speak Your Mind and Own Your Strength with Andrea Owen

E

“For women, moving away from behaviors that don’t work for us anymore, letting go of core beliefs that convince us we’re broken and not enough, laying a stake in the ground around our desires, is an act of making noise”. - Andrea Owen Have you ever received the message that you’re “too much”? Too loud, too opinionated, too sensitive or emotional, too talkative, too big, too something… As women, we’ve been socialized since birth to smile, make others comfortable, go along and get along, be helpful and put other people’s needs before our own. And a lot of the time we don’t even consciously realize this is happening. But repeating these behaviors, over months and years, can lead to resentment, poor boundary-setting, people-pleasing, approval-seeking, lashing out, negative self- talk, and unnecessary apologizing. My guest today is Andrea Owen. She’s an author, global speaker, and professional certified life coach who helps high-achieving women maximize unshakeable confidence, and master resilience. Andrea’s taught hundreds of thousands of women tools and strategies to be able to empower themselves to live their most kick-ass life through speaking, her books, coaching, and her wildly popular podcast with over 3 million downloads. She is the proud author of three books: How To Stop Feeling Like Shit: 14 Habits That Are Holding You Back From Happiness, 52 Ways to Live a Kick-Ass Life: BS Free Wisdom to Ignite Your Inner Badass and Live the Life You Deserve, and her latest book, Make Some Noise: Speak Your Mind and Own Your Strength. Today I’m talking with Andrea about common behavior patterns that sabotage our power as women and how to unlearn what we’ve been taught so that we can create a life that serves our needs and desires. Ep 74Ep. 74: How To Stop Overperforming + Underliving

E

Ambitious and capable women can easily fall into the trap of overperforming and underliving. We get lost in overthinking, overcommitting, overwhelm, and an over-devotion to letting other people call the shots of our lives. We prioritize other people’s needs and priorities and end up living a life someone else has designed and dictated, instead of saying yes to ourselves and the things we want to do, be, and say. Overperforming can lead to resentment, irritation, exhaustion, feeling unfulfilled and wanting to check out with alcohol at the end of the day. My guest today is here to share how you can stop overperforming and underliving. She’ll help you evaluate what's working in your life, what's not and what's driving your decisions. Tiffany Han is a coach, writer, and podcast host who is on a mission to teach super achievers how to put their striving on a shelf & radically infuse their lives with delight, serendipity, and deep trust in themselves for lives that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside. Ep 73Ep. 73: People Pleasing and Over Drinking

E

Has your people-pleasing habit left you with an overstuffed calendar, unrelenting anxiety that someone might be mad at you, and the inability to get through tough conversations without having a heart attack and the desire to check out at night with alcohol? If you worry a lot about what other people think of you, look towards others for approval and validation, or feel like you need to please the people around you to be accepted and loved, it’s common to reach for a glass of wine to ease that discomfort. Seeking approval from others can lead to constant underlying anxiety that the approval you’re working for can be taken away at any minute. So let’s talk about how to stop being a people pleaser when you’re quitting drinking. Ep 72Ep. 72: What Happened In My Marriage When I Stopped Drinking

E

This is Part 2 of a conversation with my husband about what happened in our marriage once I stopped drinking. To listen to Part 1 of this conversation go to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/71 Mike and I had been together for 18 years before I stopped drinking alcohol. Those years of dating, marrying and becoming parents together were filled with many happy memories of wine tasting weekends, pub crawls, boozy dinner parties and drinking vacations. Of course, not all of the memories of me drinking were positive, and after I stopped drinking certain things in our marriage had to change and evolve while others stayed the same. In this episode, Mike and I talk about our relationship, habits, rituals, parenting and connection to each other since I gave up alcohol and why he doesn’t mind that I’m not as wildly unpredictable as I used to be. We dive into the last five and a half years since I stopped drinking: early sobriety, where we are now, and where we are going. And we talk about why it’s important to separate the sadness we might feel about aging and the fact that we no longer have the same relationship we did when we were 25 years old from feelings of sadness and mourning that came up when I quit drinking. Ep 71Ep. 71: My Marriage - Drinking and Not Drinking A Conversation With My Husband, Mike

E

What role does alcohol play in a marriage? And what happens in relationships when one partner decides to stop drinking? So many women worry about the role alcohol plays in their marriage and what might happen if they were to decide to quit drinking. Whether your spouse is your drinking buddy, wants you to stop drinking, doesn’t want you to stop drinking or just doesn’t get it, navigating marriage, parenthood and partnership and your relationship with alcohol is delicate and complicated. In this very special episode, my husband Mike joins me as we talk about what our relationship was like when we were drinking versus our relationship when I stopped drinking and how my decision to go alcohol-free has affected our marriage throughout the years. We get real about the good (and the hard) parts of our marriage over the course of the last 19 years and how we navigated the transition from my drinking life and early sobriety to our new normal where I don’t drink and he still does. Ep 70Ep. 70: The Unexpected Joy Of Being Sober with Catherine Gray

E

If you've read any Quit Lit, Catherine Gray's book, The Unexpected Joy Of Being Sober, is likely on your bookshelf or Kindle. It's one of the first books about giving up alcohol I recommend to women as they're starting their journey to stop drinking. So I'm incredibly excited because my guest today is the author of The Unexpected Joy Of Being Sober, Catherine Gray. I met Catherine online in a secret non-drinking Facebook group 8 years ago, when she was first starting her life without alcohol and she has been an inspiration to me ever since. We're here to talk about all things drinking, and quitting drinking, the joy you can find in life without alcohol and her new book, Sunshine Warm Sober: Unexpected Sober Joy That Lasts. Staying sober is about so much more than putting down the alcohol. It’s about recovering and reclaiming your best possible self. You don’t have to spend all day sleeping off your hangover, you can leap out of bed at seven and go on an early morning walk, or join your friends for a lovely brunch. Catherine Gray is a Sunday Times bestselling author of five books and an award-winning writer and editor. Catherine's hit debut, The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober, was a Sunday Times top 10 bestseller. Since then she has published The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober Journal and the critically acclaimed Unexpected Joy of Being Single and The Unexpected Joy of The Ordinary.
