Ep 219Ep. 219: Should I Take A Break From Drinking? Look For These Signs To Know It’s Time
EHave you been thinking about taking a break from drinking, only to decide that you’re “not that bad”? Most women who wonder if they’re drinking too much can look around and find lots of reasons why it’s not a “real issue”. We’ve been told that having a problem with alcohol is black or white. Either you fall into the category of someone who is “an alcoholic” or who has a “drinking problem", or you don’t. But in truth binge drinking among women has become so normalized that it’s easy to dismiss any worries you have about your alcohol consumption by looking at friends and family members who drink like you do. A lot of women fall into a category known as “gray area drinking” where your drinking falls between the extremes of having negative consequences from alcohol consumption and being able to take it or leave it on occasion. You don’t have to have a drinking problem to decide that drinking isn’t helping you be your best self. And you don’t need to be an alcoholic to benefit from a longer period of time alcohol-free. Here Are 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 218Ep. 218: How To Transform Your Home To Reduce Triggers To Drink and Support Your Sobriety
EIs your home set up to support your sobriety or sabotage your efforts to lead an alcohol-free life? If you’re used to opening a bottle of wine the minute you walk in the door, having a cocktail on the back deck or curling up on the couch with your laptop or netflix after the kids go to bed, your home environment can be a powerful trigger to drink. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The way you live and design your environment can make it harder or easier to be alcohol-free. And especially in early sobriety you need to build a sober bubble. When I quit drinking, in order to build my sober bubble I needed to remove all the wine from my house. I also needed to create a sober sanctuary where I could retreat to after dinner. A place to support a new evening routine that didn’t include drinking on my couch after the kids went to bed. So I spent some time making my bedroom a place that sparked joy and supported peace and calm in the evenings. I created a space that supported my new alcohol-free lifestyle. One in which I took care of my body and myself. Simple changes can reduce cravings to drink and create a nurturing space for self care and sobriety. I asked Caroline Thor, a KonMari® Consultant and the host of the Living Clutter Free Forever podcast, to share how you can create a home that supports your ideal alcohol-free lifestyle. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 217Ep. 217: 10 Sober Travel Tips You Need For Your Next Alcohol-Free Vacation
ESober travel can feel like you're running through a gauntlet of offers and opportunities to drink. From airport bars to business dinners to all inclusive cocktails, alcohol seems to be everywhere when you are trying to not drink. But I'm going to set you up for success so you'll be able to enjoy and appreciate sober travel (even if every trip you’ve taken since college has featured cocktails on the beach, wine tasting tours and boozy pubs). With these 10 tips you'll be able to navigate your next business trip and sober vacation like a pro! I asked Margaret Ward, who has led alcohol-free trips for women in Greece, Croatia, Norway, Italy and Portugal to join me to share our tips and strategies that will help you plan and enjoy sober vacations, survive airports, business trips and visits with the in-laws without diving into a bottle of wine. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 216Ep. 216: Why Emotional Sobriety Is Key to Navigating an Alcohol-Free Life
EWhen I was drinking I used alcohol to check out after a hard day, numb out from irritation and resentment, make the monotony of adulting less boring and as a reward to look forward to for getting through another week. And when drinking left me with too many hangovers, sleepless nights and crushing anxiety I finally decided that I didn’t want to feel that way anymore and (slowly) pieced together 30, 60, 100, 180+ days alcohol-free. It’s not easy, but it is pretty clear how to do the “sobriety” thing. When you don’t drink, you’re sober! But in order to “stay” sober, learning how to practice emotional sobriety can keep you balanced and happy in an alcohol-free life. Emotional sobriety is all about handling your emotions in a healthy, balanced way without turning to alcohol to cope with life’s challenges. It’s really important for long-term recovery because ignoring your mental and emotional health can get you in a place where it’s really attractive to escape with alcohol. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 215Ep. 215: How to Rekindle Romance and Manage Conflict in Your Relationship
ERekindling romance and managing conflict in intimate relationships is something a lot of women struggle with—whether it's why they drink or a challenge they face after stepping away from alcohol. Figuring out how to handle conflicts, set boundaries, and connect with your partner can be really tough, especially when alcohol has been your go-to for socializing or managing stress. Whether or not you realize it, drinking has probably influenced the ways you are used to connecting, communicating and managing conflict with your partner. So if you feel disconnected from your partner, don’t know how to manage conflict or get back the spark you used to have, we’re here to help! I asked Anna Aslanian, a marriage and family therapist, for her guidance on how to rekindle romance and manage conflict in your relationship. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 214Ep. 214: Quit Like A Woman with Holly Whitaker
EIn this special anniversary episode, I’m celebrating four incredible years of the Hello Someday Podcast, marked by 214 episodes and 1.5 million downloads. It's been an amazing journey, and I'm deeply grateful to each and every one of you who has joined me along the way. To mark this occasion, I'm thrilled to revisit my top guest interview of all time: my conversation with Holly Whitaker, author of The New York Times best-selling book Quit Like A Woman, The Radical Choice To Not Drink In A Culture Obsessed with Alcohol. Holly's book holds a special place in my heart as she was a big part of my own sobriety journey. In this episode Holly and I talk about the role of alcohol in society and its impact on women, why to embrace the trial-and-error nature of quitting drinking and why phrases like "Never Question the Decision" (NQTD) can serve as powerful mantras on the journey to sobriety. We also dive into how much the recovery movement has shifted in the last 10 years as more women are speaking out about their decision to stop drinking. Quit Like A Woman has been described as a groundbreaking look at drinking culture and a road map to cutting out alcohol that will change the way you look at drinking forever. I know you’re going to love this conversation with Holly. Ep 213Ep. 213: How To Stop People-Pleasing In Sobriety
EI describe myself as an ex-red wine girl and a recovering people-pleaser. And if you’re wondering how those two things are connected we’re going to dig into that because as you start to navigate sobriety, boundaries are going to be your very best friend. Have you fallen into a people-pleasing pattern? Maybe you’re an overachiever who takes care of everything and everyone. Maybe you’re the happy, agreeable girl who spends a lot of time “reading the room” to anticipate the emotions of others so you can put them at ease. Maybe you’re uncomfortable with conflict and would rather stuff down negative emotions than share them with the people in your life. Maybe you’re afraid to say no because you want people to like you. Maybe you’re terrified of disapproval so you’re anxious, self-critical and a perfectionist. Maybe you’re so busy meeting others’ expectations that you have trouble identifying your own wants, needs and feelings. Maybe you’re externally motivated, anxiously seeking the validation of your parents, teachers, boss, spouse, children or friends. It even sounds exhausting. And those ingrained patterns of behavior can make you want to drink to check out from overwhelm, resentment, sadness, loneliness, stress, irritation, unhappiness or feeling unappreciated. I asked my good friend Hailey Magee, a certified coach who helps people around the world break the people-pleasing pattern and master the art of self-advocacy and author of the book, Stop People Pleasing and Find Your Power to help me unpack people-pleasing, boundaries and why they matter in sobriety. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 212Ep. 212: Using Mindfulness Practices To Support Your Sobriety
EAre mindfulness practices part of your sober toolbox? If not, they should be. Mindfulness in sobriety can help you manage cravings, reduce stress and anxiety, regulate your emotions, increase self awareness, support your overall well-being, mental health and prevent relapse. I know those are big promises, so let’s break down what mindfulness is, how you practice it and apply it to your sobriety. So if you’re ready to dive into all things mindfulness in sobriety I asked my friend Deb Masner, host of the Alcohol Tipping Point podcast, to dive into what mindfulness is and how to use it to support your recovery and alcohol-free life. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 211Ep. 211: Addiction Inoculation: How to minimize your kids’ risk of substance abuse and dependence
EIf you’ve spent a bunch of years opening a bottle of wine to deal with stress and overwhelm, to celebrate or reward yourself for making it to the end of the week, it may feel awkward or hypocritical to talk with your kids about the risks of addiction to alcohol. But in a culture obsessed with booze, being able to help your kids understand the impact that alcohol and drugs can have on their lives and how to identify risks and behaviors that can lead to substance abuse and dependence is important - arguably even more important than all the hours we spend helping them with algebra homework and cheering them on at baseball and soccer games. I asked Jessica Lahey, author of The Addiction Inoculation, Raising Healthy Kids In A Culture Of Dependence to share what parents can do to help kids recognize their risk for alcohol addiction, spot signs of early abuse and navigate our boozy world without falling into the trap of substance use and dependence. It’s information I wish I had known when I started drinking and in looking at the risk factors for dependence it also gave me a new level of understanding of why alcohol was such a compelling drug in my life and compassion for myself for falling into the drinking cycle. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 210Ep. 210: How To Stay Sober Once You’ve Stopped Drinking
EHave you ever stopped drinking but then struggled to stay sober after a bit? You’re not alone. The best way to stay sober is to focus on building a life you love without alcohol. It’s about not only putting down the wine glass, but also shifting the way you’ve been living your life so that you no longer want to numb yourself at the end of the day. If you’ve been worried about your drinking for a while, have tried to moderate and made (and broken) all the rules about when and how much to drink and finally have sober momentum, it is something to celebrate and protect. Whether you’ve been sober for a month, 4 months, 6 months or a year, there are steps you should take to stay on the alcohol-free path, build a life you love and guard against going back to drinking. First let’s break down why women might go back to drinking after a period of sobriety. The four most common reasons women drink after a period of sobriety are boredom, stress, loneliness and hormonal changes before their period or in perimenopause. They’re also big reasons women have fallen into the drinking cycle in the first place. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 209Ep. 209: Toxic Relationships, Gaslighting & Alcohol
EHave you ever used alcohol as a coping mechanism to escape a dysfunctional relationship or unhealthy environment? You might be a victim of gaslighting if you’ve been told that you’re imagining things, too sensitive, dramatic, overreacting, forgetful, paranoid, confused, insecure or misinterpreting things. And if you’re drinking it’s easy for someone to say “you’re drunk, you don’t know what you’re talking about” or “you were drinking, you don’t remember what happened.” Without clear memories you’re more vulnerable to someone undermining your confidence, confusing and invalidating your experiences and emotions, establishing power and manipulating you. Gaslighting can make you doubt yourself and your memories. In a relationship you might notice that you’re frequently feeling confusion, doubt, guilt, isolation, anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, anger or desperation. Alcohol can make it harder to cope with gaslighting in a number of ways. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 208Ep. 208: What to Do If You’re Just Not Ready Yet To Stop Drinking
EHave you thought about taking a break from drinking but then decided that you’re “just not ready yet” to do it? Even if we know that alcohol is dragging us down, the idea of stopping drinking can be so daunting and scary)that we can stay in the drinking cycle for months or years longer than we need to. If you’re waiting for your life to get better so that you’ll be able to stop drinking, you might not realize that your life WILL get better WHEN you stop drinking. Beyond FOMO and using alcohol as a way to connect and relieve stress, a lot of us are not ready to stop drinking yet because we have no idea how to actually do it. So instead of stopping drinking, we decide to double down on being better at “moderating”, making more rules and guidelines for when or how or how much we’ll drink in an effort to keep alcohol in our lives but minimize the harm it causes. So, if you’re in the place of thinking that you’re “not ready yet to stop drinking”, we’re here to help! I asked Julie Dereshinsky, a certified professional coach who works with high-functioning, high-achieving women who are questioning their relationship with alcohol to help me dig into what you can do if you think that alcohol is dragging you down but you don’t feel ready to stop drinking. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 207Ep. 207: Could You Be Happier Sober?
EIf you love drinking like I did, I know it’s almost impossible to imagine that you could be happier sober. Before I stopped drinking I imagined that my life without alcohol would be lonely, boring and depressing. I thought that I would always want to drink, feel constantly deprived, that date nights with my husband would be less fun, parenting my kids would be more stressful and dinners out with colleagues would be awkward. I’m glad to tell you that I was dead wrong. I am happier sober than I ever was in my drinking days. So if you’re scared of an alcohol-free life, listen to this conversation with Madeline Forrest Campbell, host of the Happiest Sober Podcast. We will share with you all the reasons why you should jump into sobriety and get excited about what lies ahead for you, because it’s going to be good! 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 206Ep. 206: Protecting Your Mental Health While Raising A Neurodivergent Kid
ERaising a child with ADHD, Autism or neurodivergence can be mentally, emotionally and physically exhausting and alcohol can seem like an easy way to relax and turn off your brain at the end of the day. Neurodiversity encompasses a variety of conditions such as autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders, dyslexia, and more. Each condition presents its own unique set of challenges and strengths, impacting the experiences of both the kids and their parents. Dr. Emily King notes, “Most neurodivergent kids have really big feelings and sensitive nervous systems. They may be too overwhelmed to interact socially the way neurotypical children do. If you're the mother of a neurodivergent child it's like parenting on steroids. You have to be more consistent and on your game all the time and that can be completely draining.” There are also complex emotions parents feel when having a child diagnosed with neurodivergence. Combine the stress and responsibilities of parenting a neurodivergent kid with the fact that women, to a greater extent than men, tend to drink to cope with stress and negative feelings, and you have the perfect recipe for alcohol to become both a coping strategy and a problem for moms in this situation. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 205Ep. 205: Embracing Sobriety As a Power Move
EIf you’re just starting out on the alcohol-free path it’s possible you are holding on to a negative image of what “sober life” looks like. Before I stopped drinking I thought sobriety would be boring, sad and lonely and those beliefs kept me stuck in the drinking cycle for a long time. I want to help you to replace those limiting beliefs and embrace sobriety as a power move. Sobriety can be the tool you use to live your best life as the most vibrant, capable and confident version of yourself. Brené Brown wrote in a piece titled, What Being Sober Has Meant to Me, that "sobriety isn’t a limitation. Sobriety isn’t even a “have to”—it’s a superpower". When you stop drinking you’ll have more mental clarity, emotional stability, health, happiness, freedom, money, energy and time. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 204Ep. 204: How Hormonal Changes In Perimenopause Can Fuel Your Desire To Drink
EHave you ever felt like you’re drinking for “medicinal purposes” to get through your monthly menstrual cycle and perimenopause symptoms? I’m 48 and the first time I had a hot flash I texted my girlfriends to ask “Oh my god, is this what a hot flash feels like? It sucks!” Perimenopause is sometimes described as a "reverse puberty" which is about as fun as it sounds, except unlike puberty, it can last up to 10 years! Between mood swings, cramps, hot flashes, headaches, brain fog, feeling physically uncomfortable, sad and unmotivated, hormonal changes in perimenopause can fuel your desire to drink. Mood swings are no joke. And the estrogen fluctuations that come with perimenopause can make your emotions all over the place. Hot flashes and night sweats can leave you feeling drained and tired. Our brains are going through some serious changes, too. Hormonal fluctuations can mess with our dopamine levels, making us crave alcohol more than usual. So if reaching for alcohol is your go-to coping mechanism, you’re in perimenopause or on your cycle and you want to drink to numb out, have compassion for yourself. But the solution is not to drink a toxic substance that can make your symptoms worse and further deplete your body. Bria Gadd, an integrative nutritionist and holistic health coach who hosts The Period Whisperer Podcast and specializes in female hormones, is here to talk about perimenopause and teach us how to navigate our monthly menstrual cycles without drinking to numb the symptoms. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 203Ep. 203: Are You Ready For A Midlife Makeover?
EQuitting drinking can be the lead domino to uplevel your life and explore a midlife makeover! I can say that now, but I know when you’re first considering sobriety it doesn’t feel like an opportunity. When I stopped drinking it was a last resort after years of trying to moderate and control my drinking. I started my 100 day no alcohol challenge because I felt physically and emotionally awful and I knew alcohol was a big part of the problem. And despite knowing that drinking made me anxious and depressed, I thought that life in sobriety would suck and I would be bored, isolated and lonely. Drinking had made my life smaller by crowding out other interests and activities I could have been exploring. Once you stop drinking and get through early sobriety you’ll find you have more time, money, energy and confidence. You’ll feel more present and creative. And that’s the perfect time for a midlife makeover. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit Program, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 202Ep. 202: How To Overcome Imposter Syndrome Without A Drink
EHave you ever found yourself reaching for a drink to shake off a feeling of overwhelm, stress, insecurity or imposter syndrome? I used to drink to feel less nervous the night before a big presentation, an interview or a performance review. I worried that I didn’t know enough, wasn’t well prepared enough or wouldn’t present confidently enough, so I thought a few glasses of wine would help me calm down and make those feelings disappear, even just for a little while. Impostor syndrome is surprisingly common among high achieving women. And it doesn’t matter if you’re a CEO, a lawyer, a teacher, graduate student or mom of little kids. Most women feel an immense pressure to excel in all areas of our lives and a healthy fear of failure. Maybe when you’re at work you feel like you’re not doing enough at home with your kids or in your relationship. And when you’re at home you feel like you’re falling behind in the office. And that’s only part of the way that women are made to feel like we’re not good enough or measuring up. Combine that with the fact that we feel like we have to look like we “have it all together” to be respected in the workplace, it’s no wonder so many of us want to dive into a bottle of wine to make it all go away at 6pm. I asked my friend Amy Liz Harrison, a life coach, recovery and mental health advocate, and the host of the Eternally Amy podcast to help me dive into the topic of imposter syndrome and how women are drinking to cope with self-doubt and anxiety in a world with endless pressures to do more and be better. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 201Ep. 201: What happens between 100 days and 6 months of sobriety?
EIf you’ve reached 90 or 100 days of sobriety you might be wondering what to expect between 100 days alcohol-free and 6 months sober. Does sobriety get easier between the 3 month and 6 month mark? Ep 200Ep. 200: How To Put Thoughts of Moderation On Pause
EAre you tired of the endless cycle of attempting to moderate your drinking or take breaks from alcohol, only to have your resolve crumble by Friday night (or 6pm) and wake up the next morning asking yourself why you can’t drink like a “normal person”? You’re not alone. I tried to moderate my drinking for years. I made ALL the rules about when I would (or wouldn’t drink) to get a handle on it. And maybe it would work for a while, but never for very long. And I was miserable when I was doing it. If I’m being honest, I’ve never wanted “a” drink in my life. I’ve always wanted that fuzzy, buzzy feeling alcohol gave me and I kept drinking because I never wanted that feeling to end. I just didn’t have an off switch. I drank until the alcohol was gone or I “went to bed” (aka passed out). You don’t want to dive back into the drinking cycle again because once you start with “a” glass, it’s really easy to have that glass become a bottle. And then have that special occasion become a Tuesday night at home. And to have it be incredibly hard to get 2 weeks alcohol-free again. So I want to share with you the strategies I give my private sober coaching clients to help them put those thoughts of “moderation” on pause. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 199Ep. 199: Why Women Lose Self-Trust And How To Get It Back
EHigh-achieving women who struggle with alcohol are often smart, hard working and struggle with trusting in their own worth, instincts and decisions. If this is you, you’re probably extremely capable but live with insecurity, a healthy fear of failure and a loud inner-critic. You might look to your boss, partner, parents or friends for approval and validation of your work. You might have a hard time drawing boundaries or feel like you can never relax because you could be doing more. And you might drink to quiet the constant chatter in your mind. Before I stopped drinking I identified as a people-pleaser and an overachiever who lived with a somewhat constant fear of failure, a need for approval and a lot of self doubt. I started relying on wine to turn off my busy mind, let me relax and quiet my insecurities. But ironically, once I started drinking to cope it became even harder to trust my choices, feel confident and capable. I asked my friend Sara Dean, a business and leadership coach and the host of the Shameless Mom Academy Podcast, to help us understand why women lose self-trust and how to get it back. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 198Ep. 198: The Alcohol-Free Wellness Revolution: How To Eat To Change How You Drink
EWhen I was in my 20s I bought into the idea that drinking in moderation was “good” for me. And why wouldn’t I? Red wine was being marketed as a “health” food. Articles and research being circulated claimed that drinking red wine would give me health benefits ranging from lowering bad cholesterol, regulating blood sugar, reducing my risk of cancer, keeping my brain sharp, my heart healthy, my body slim and that red wine could even treat the common cold! Don’t believe me? If you search “Is Red Wine Good For Me?”, this article will pop up just under one by Web MD: 10 Health Benefits Of Drinking Red Wine That Will Keep You Healthy. It’s full of sketchy science and claims that have been disproven in the last decade and was shared by…(wait for it)...a winery The truth is that alcohol is a toxic, psychoactive, and dependence-producing substance and has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer decades ago – this is the highest risk group, which also includes asbestos, radiation and tobacco. And now that an analysis of decades of research on alcohol’s negative effects on your brain and body have forced the news media to report that Moderate Drinking Has No Health Benefits it’s time to turn our attention to what actually can make our bodies healthier: nutrition. Here’s the headline you need to know Not only is embracing an alcohol-free lifestyle a positive health choice, but nutrition can help you reduce alcohol cravings and heal your body from damage caused by alcohol. I asked Dr. Brooke Scheller, author of "How to Eat to Change How You Drink," to dive into the science behind how nutritional choices can curb cravings to drink, heal your gut, improve your mood and support your journey to sobriety. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 197Ep. 197: Drunk-ish with Stefanie Wilder-Taylor
EThis podcast episode is a deeply personal one because the work of my guest, Stefanie Wilder-Taylor, both influenced my identity as a ‘fun mom’ who loved to drink and was an inspirational guide on my journey to sobriety. When I became a mom I fell in love with my son, and was also quickly overwhelmed by the physical and emotional work of taking care of a baby. I couldn’t believe how quickly my life changed and my independence and autonomy disappeared. I wondered if I would ever be able to relax and have fun again since my life was now dominated by work, running to day care, baby food, baths, bedtime and not much else. And I loved to drink. So when I discovered Stefanie’s funny books about motherhood with titles like Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay and Naptime Is the New Happy Hour I felt like I’d found my people. That morning, in the coffee shop, my son was 16 months old. It was 17 months after Naptime Is the New Happy Hour was published. I bought the paper and hid it away. Today I got to thank Stefanie for her honesty, bravery and vulnerability, both in stopping drinking and being brave enough to talk about it. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 196Ep. 196: Blackout with Sarah Hepola
EAre you a blackout drinker? Because I was. I’ve probably forgotten more of the “big nights” of my 20s and 30s than I remember. Actually, it’s not that I forgot them, it’s that I drank enough alcohol that my brain didn’t record any memories of large chunks of those nights. I’ve blacked out on business trips, at weddings and on holidays and have spent more time than I’d like to admit trying to piece together the events of the night before and having people tell me things I did and literally can’t remember. So, in early sobriety, when I came across Sarah Hepola's New York Times bestselling memoir, "Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget”, I couldn’t put it down. In Sarah’s book, I learned about blackouts, what they are and why they happen. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 195Ep. 195: Sober Coach Advice On How To Do Dry January Right
EDry January is in the news as more adults are signing up to take part in the annual challenge to go 31 days with no alcohol. What began in 2013 as a public health campaign from Alcohol Change UK with the goal of encouraging people to take a break from alcohol so they could ditch hangovers, reduce their waistlines and save some serious money has become a global movement. In fact, 15-20% of American adults participated in Dry January in recent years, led by Generation Z and Millenials. But now that Dry January has become a popular health trend covered in the media and all over social networks, even Gen Xers and Baby Boomers are jumping on board. In this episode, I’m partnering with 4 of my favorite sobriety coaches and podcasters to give you all the tips and tricks to do Dry January right! Gill Tietz from The Sober Powered Podcast, Suzanne Wayre from Sober Mom Life Podcast, Michaela Horvathova & Erinn O’Neill from 2 Sober Girls podcast and I got together to share our best advice for surviving and thriving during your dry challenge. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 193Ep. 193: Sober Motivation: How To Get It and How To Keep It Going
EIf you’ve ever tried to stop drinking or take a longer break from alcohol you know how hard it can be to put together 2 weeks or 30 days or 4 months of sobriety. Sober momentum is precious and often difficult to get. So when you have a foothold in alcohol-free life, how do you keep your sober motivation going strong? The fear of losing steam, falling off the wagon or becoming unmotivated to stay on the sober path is real. So let’s talk about the very best strategies to keep your sober motivation high. Ep 192Ep. 192: Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do In Sobriety
EWhen I was drinking I was the furthest thing from mentally strong and resilient. I went through most days feeling like I could barely cope with life. Between the 3 AM wakeups, hangovers, promising myself that I would not drink and then buying a bottle of wine during the witching hour, I felt defeated, tired, defensive and overwhelmed on a daily basis. The work of shifting away from that negative mindset to become mentally strong in sobriety is key to helping you create a life you love without alcohol. In order to help you do that I asked Amy Morin, therapist and bestselling author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do and 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don’t Do, to share her research and work on how to become mentally strong in sobriety. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 190Ep. 190: Expert Tips For Staying Sober During The Holidays
EFeeling anxious and uncertain about how to stay sober during the holidays? You’re not alone, especially if it's your first holiday season alcohol-free. It's completely normal to feel out of place and crave a drink during those holiday parties and family gatherings. You’re probably used to toasting the New Year with a glass of champagne or sipping red wine around the Christmas fire. For a long time I knew that I should stop drinking but couldn’t imagine office holiday parties, family celebrations and New Year’s Eve alcohol-free. The truth is that my first holiday season wasn’t easy, but it was good. After years of regretting drinking too much at big events it was lovely to remember all of New Year’s Eve, wake up on Christmas morning without a hangover and replace guilt and regret with peace and pride. To help you navigate the boozy holiday season alcohol-free, I gathered a trio of experts: Gill Tietz, host of the Sober Powered podcast, Veronica Valli, author and host of the Soberful podcast, and Paul Churchill host of the Recovery Elevator podcast. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 189Ep. 189: How To Cope With Holiday Season Anxiety and Family Stress Without Drinking
EThe "Happiest Season Of All" can be a big challenge to navigate alcohol-free, especially in early sobriety. But with the right strategies you can cope with holiday season anxiety and family stress without drinking over it. Let's be real, facing the holidays with your family without a drink in hand can be awkward. Maybe you're used to drinking to celebrate or to cope with loneliness. You might use alcohol to push through a packed social schedule or navigate family gatherings. Anyway you look at it, there's a reason that getting through the holidays alcohol-free can be challenging. But it can be done and you’ll find that being fully present, without adding a substance that increases anxiety and depression during the holidays can be wonderful. So I asked Dr. Aaron Weiner, PhD, a board certified psychologist and an addiction specialist, for guidance on how to move through holiday season anxiety and family stress without throwing away your sober momentum. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 188Ep. 188: How To Talk With Your Kids About Why You Quit Drinking (A Conversation With My Daughter Lila)
EToday my 9 year old daughter, Lila, is joining me on the podcast to chat about how I talk to my kids about alcohol, why I quit drinking and what she thinks about her mom being a sober coach (and a podcaster!) A lot of women in early sobriety wonder how to discuss their drinking or not drinking with their kids, and of course every family is different. But since I get asked this question a lot I decided to ask my daughter to chat with me about it. As we talk you’ll hear from Lila that she… ✅ Knows that mom used to drink a lot and stopped and that dad still drinks a bit and both are OK ✅ Is aware that when mom was drinking she woke up at 3am and was anxious and sometimes it made her throw up because alcohol is poison to your body ✅ Understands that alcohol is addictive and how that works (using a metaphor that makes sense to her) ✅ Knows that sober milestones are a big deal and a “Soberversary” is something to celebrate ✅ Thinks it’s cool that I help women stop drinking Lila also shares that she thinks I can seriously up my TikTok and YouTube game, her take on the patriarchy, women getting paid less than men, Taylor Swift, diet culture + a whole lot more. 😊 I hope you enjoy this one. Ep 187Ep. 187: Navigating Friendships In Sobriety
EIf you’re taking a break from drinking or quitting alcohol completely, how do you navigate friendships in sobriety that were created on barstools and cemented in boozy book clubs? Most women I know have a lot of fears around how their friendships and social groups might change when they stop drinking. And that makes sense when all your friends drink or your partner is your drinking buddy. Maybe you go on annual trips with a big group of friends where the booze is flowing all weekend or the dinner table is filled with wine bottles when you get together with your girlfriends. Maybe your entire family drinks and holidays are filled with endless toasts and cocktail hours. When you think of stopping drinking it’s normal to wonder what will happen to your friendships and your social life. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 186Ep. 186: Why High Achieving Women Struggle To Connect In Their Marriage (And Alcohol Doesn’t Help)
EDo you feel lonely in your marriage? If you're a high-achieving woman, you're not alone. If you're a high-achieving woman, you're not alone. Many women who are kicking ass at work and home are also lonely and struggling to connect in their marriages. Maybe you're busy, overwhelmed and have gotten into the habit of putting family and work ahead of your own needs. You might feel guilty when you're at work, guilty when you're at home and try to avoid conflict (or intimacy) with your partner because you can't handle one more thing. And it's possible you're pouring yourself a big glass of wine to get through it all. This struggle real, so I joined forces with Veronica Cisneros, a licensed marriage and family therapist, to talk about why high-achieving women have a hard time connecting in their marriages. In our conversation Veronica and I dive into the challenges faced by women who are trying to do it all, relationship patterns that can develop, and how those are amplified when we get into the habit of drinking at the end of the day. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 185Ep. 185: What Happens In Your First Year Of Sobriety
EWhat should you expect to feel and do and experience in your first year of sobriety? You’ve probably heard that the first 30 days sober are the absolute hardest and that hitting the one year milestone is big and important, but what comes in between? Your first year sober can be a complex, emotional rollercoaster. You'll feel immense pride and joy and also uncertainty and vulnerability. It’s beautiful and hard, tender and transformative. And it can be really helpful to know what to expect in your first year, from people who have been there before you. I asked my friend Lori Massicot, midlife sobriety coach and host of the To 50 And Beyond Podcast, to join me in talking about our own experiences and memories of our first year of sobriety. We dive into what we thought, felt and did between the last day we drank, the big 30, 60 and 90-day sober milestones, how we felt at 6 months alcohol-free and what we did to celebrate hitting one year of sobriety and our first “soberversary” (yes…that’s a thing!) 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 184Ep. 184: Are You An Introvert? How To Socialize Without Liquid Courage
EIf you’re an introvert it's likely you’ve used alcohol in social situations to ease anxiety, be more outgoing and cope with large gatherings. So what do you do when you stop drinking? Most introverts gain energy from solitude and quiet and enjoy interacting one on one or with smaller groups. Parties and lots of social interactions can feel draining for introverts, and it’s common to use “liquid courage” to feel more at ease in uncomfortable social situations. If you’re an introvert socializing in a world without alcohol it can be challenging to figure out how to attend parties and business functions, spend time with extended family and interact with other parents at sports games without feeling completely drained or socially awkward. So I asked my friend Meredith Hackwith Edwards, host of the podcast Meredith for Real: The Curious Introvert, to share her tips for surviving and thriving as an introvert in a world that can feel made for extroverts. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 183Ep. 183: What You Need To Know About Breast Cancer + Alcohol
EWhat you don’t know about breast cancer and alcohol can hurt you. Most Americans believe that “moderate” drinking (think 1 drink a day for women or 7 drinks a week) is “safe”, and many Americans believe that red wine is good for you. While most people know that you shouldn’t drink and drive or drink while pregnant, a recent study found that only 34% of the general population knew that alcohol is a risk factor for cancer. Compare that to the 78% of Americans who correctly state that smoking tobacco is a risk factor for cancer and the 66% who state that major sun exposure is a cancer risk factor. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month I sat down with Stacey Devine, MD, a triple board-certified physician in family, integrative and lifestyle medicine who has worked with many breast cancer survivors in her private practice and understands the impact of their treatments on their physical and emotional health. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 182Ep. 182: Break Up With Alcohol To Live Your Best Life
EYou don’t need to have a drinking problem for alcohol to keep you from breaking through to your best life. Sometimes, without even being aware of it, we’ve allowed alcohol to steal our time and energy, cloud our clarity, fuel self-doubt, reduce motivation and alter our brains and bodies. Our lives have been dulled by booze. I asked Amanda Kuda, author of the book Unbottled Potential: Break Up With Alcohol And Break Through To Your Best Life to talk with me about how alcohol keeps us stuck in “good enough”. Before she stopped drinking Amanda’s life looked really good from the outside. She was young, healthy, single and attractive with a successful career and an active social life. But she describes her life as “a shallow, repetitive merry go round of ladder climbing and elbow rubbing that was sold as “the dream”.” When she stepped back she saw that most of her friendships lacked depth, her romantic life was unfulfilling, she was working for someone else’s dream and her life was devoid of the spiritual connection she craved. Ep 180Ep. 180: Sober Sex, Dating and Relationships
E“Let’s grab a drink” is a pretty standard invitation for a first date and in my drinking days almost every date with my husband involved a bottle of wine. So when you stop drinking it’s normal to wonder how sober sex, dating and relationships are going to work without alcohol as a social lubricant. The good news is that there are a lot of benefits to dry dating. When you take alcohol out of the equation you can be more present, evaluate if the person you’re with is a good match or if there are red flags you missed when you were drinking, connect with your partner more deeply, remember everything clearly and even have more satisfying sex sober. Ep 179Ep. 179: High Achieving Women At Work - Pressure, The Patriarchy + A Bottle Of Wine A Night
EHow do you handle an endless number of meetings in a single day and the pressure to constantly do more? Do you feel like you’re always behind, overworked and undervalued? What if you wake up everyday to head into a workplace that feels toxic and untenable but blame yourself for not handling it all with grace and ease? If you’re a high-achieving woman with an ambitious career, the pressures of corporate life can make it easy to buy into the idea that alcohol will help you cope. It's a story that resonates with many of us who have walked the tightrope between success and self-destruction, building a career while also struggling with drinking, thinking about drinking and recovering from drinking. In her book Exit Interview: The Life and Death of My Ambitious Career, my friend Kristi Coulter details her experience working at Amazon.com for 12 years. She writes about the challenge and excitement along with seven-day workweeks, burnout and a culture driven largely by fear. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 178Ep. 178: It’s Not About The Wine - How To Cope With The Mental Load of Motherhood
EWhat’s the image that comes to mind when you hear the phrase “wine mom”? In popular culture she’s portrayed as a woman with small children, barely getting through the day and reaching for a glass of wine at night to ease the stress of parenthood. Or maybe she’s a soccer mom with a tumbler of wine on the sidelines or escaping the kids for the night at a book club meeting with girlfriends and lots and lots of wine. The idea that being a modern mom means you are “surviving motherhood one glass of wine at a time” is everywhere. As a mother, I know firsthand the immense pressures that come with the territory of parenting. From managing the household to juggling kids' schedules and addressing their emotional needs, the mental load of motherhood can often feel overwhelming. The truth is that moms need support for the physical and emotional labor of parenting, not an unhealthy coping mechanism of downing an addictive substance. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Ep 177Ep. 177: Self-Care In Early Sobriety
ESelf-care is critical for setting you up for success in early sobriety. If you’re like most women who drink to reward yourself at the end of the day you’ve probably been going through life over-scheduling yourself, putting your head down to get through your endless to-do list, feeling like there’s never enough time in the day. You’re likely overwhelmed, overworked and overtired. And if you continue to feel that way you’re going to do what you’ve always done: drink to check out and tolerate your life and your schedule. Ep 176Ep. 176: Are You Burned Out? How To Cope Without Drinking Over It
EAre you caught in the relentless whirlwind of life, desperately seeking the off-switch for that ever-churning mental engine? In this podcast episode, we're peeling back the layers of burnout with the incredible Dr. Sharon Grossman. Dr. Grossman unveils the root causes and the early signs of burnout: emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and decreased productivity. She guides us through the stress burnout continuum, helping us recognize the signs of burnout and offering strategies to address it before it becomes overwhelming. Ep 175Ep. 175: What Can You Expect In Your First 90 Days Of Sobriety
EWhen I first tried to stop drinking I couldn’t get much more than 4 days alcohol-free, so the idea of 90 days of sobriety seemed impossible. Looking back I now realize that part of why staying sober for 90 days felt so hard was that the first week was miserable and I had no idea what to expect for the next 3 months. So I want you to have the information I didn’t have when I was in the drinking cycle. I asked Courtney Andersen, a Sober Coach, Podcast Host, and Author of Sober Vibes, A Guide To Your First 3 Months Without Alcohol to help me break down exactly what to expect in your first 90 days of sobriety. Ep 174Ep. 174: 3 Stages of Relapse + How To Protect Your Sobriety
EOnce you’ve gotten a period of time alcohol-free, how do you protect your sobriety and avoid relapse? It’s a question I get all the time from my sober coaching clients and one I have personal experience navigating, both successfully and unsuccessfully. I know from personal experience and from working with hundreds of women in private coaching that coming back to sobriety after a relapse is not easy or guaranteed, so I want to give you the tools to prevent a relapse before it happens and to make it easier to get sober momentum again if you do start drinking. And so I asked Angela Pugh, a master life coach with 15 years working in addiction and recovery as an interventionist and trainer and the host of the Addiction Unlimited Podcast to explore the three stages of relapse: emotional, mental and physical, how to recognize each and how to utilize new coping skills to stay on the alcohol-free path instead of going back to drinking. Ep 173Ep. 173: How Alcohol Companies Target Women Through Marketing, Influencers and Social Media
EHave you ever wondered why you drink what you drink? Why is red wine best paired with steak and white wine the right choice in warm weather? Why is champagne the appropriate choice for weddings and beer is best for a ballgame? What does it mean about you if you order a cosmopolitan vs. a gin and tonic at a bar and why are there entire articles written about what a woman’s drink says about her? So many of our cultural beliefs about alcohol have been driven by the alcohol industry. Alcohol companies target women to affect our beliefs and choices through sophisticated marketing, influencer campaigns and precise social media placements. The wine, beer and spirits industry spends big bucks and a lot of time and energy to understand, reach and influence what we drink, how often we drink and our preferences for different types of alcohol. Companies pay for focus groups, influencer placements and brand sponsorships to drive our beliefs about what drinking does for us (and what it means about us) so that we will increase our consumption of a highly addictive substance. Ep 172Ep. 172: How Ambitious Women Can Have It All Without Doing It All
EAre you trying to do it all and losing yourself in the process? I know what that’s like. When I was drinking I was completely overwhelmed by my schedule and responsibilities and saw drinking as my one reward. I felt like I was barely holding it together each day with the demands of my career and my family, paying the bills and the mortgage, trying to maintain friendships and a strong marriage, along with the doctor’s appointments, camp schedules, figuring out what’s for dinner and all the rest. If your life feels like mine did, it’s no wonder we reach for the bottle of wine to try to smooth out the edges at the end of the day. Once I put down the wine glass I was able to finally see clearly that my love affair with drinking was making me more anxious and less able to manage my responsibilities. So today I want to give you the tools (and the permission) to stop doing all the things and start doing the right things. My guest is Melissa Leon, a mom who climbed the corporate ladder with three young kids and was drinking too much to escape it all, until she decided to stop. Ep 171Ep. 171: Why I Don’t Use The Word “Alcoholic” To Describe Myself (Or Anyone Else)
EHere’s something that I get asked about often but don’t talk about much: why I don’t use the term “alcoholic” to describe myself or anyone else. It’s funny because as a sober coach, the host of a popular sobriety podcast and a person who has been immersed in the world of addiction and recovery for the last 10 years, I should be the poster girl for being comfortable using the terms alcoholic and alcoholism. I have spent hundreds of hours talking about women and drinking, alcohol and our society, addiction and different paths to recovery. I’ve attended sober retreats, recovery conferences, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and have participated in all kinds of online groups and in person gatherings of people going alcohol-free. I also have many friends in the recovery space who use the term alcoholic to describe themselves proudly. Ep 170Ep. 170: Seltzer Squad - Staying Sober In The City
ESobriety can be a serious subject but it doesn’t always have to be. And I love to find real people talking about their drinking and sober journey with humor and honesty. One of my favorite podcasts to listen to to get a dose of relatable, engaging and seriously funny discussions of life on the sober side is Seltzer Squad with Kate Zander and her and former co-host Jes. So I invited Kate Zander from Seltzer Squad to have a real conversation about getting sober in the city and what happens once you decide to move off the barstool. If you’re looking for an engaging, relatable and funny conversation about sobriety this one’s for you.
