#230 Airfryers. Are they Toxic? With Dr Rupy Aujla and Sakina Okoko
I personally love my airfryer, I’ve been using it at home and in the Doctor’s Kitchen studio since the start of the year, but can they be considered a ‘healthier’ cooking method? This is a question I’m often posed online so we did some research and looked at a few studies. Air fryers aren’t a new invention, in fact they’ve been around for a number of years but the popularity of them has soared over the last 2 years.The way air fryers cook foods is by circulating hot hair containing tiny droplets of oil around the foods. It actually mimics the effect of submerging food in hot oil but using significantly less oil. This conversation I had with Johann Hari (#193 Why you can't focus) encouraged me to inject mind wandering into my daily routine.Jessie Inchauspé is now a global phenomena and has influenced millions of people to become more conscious about the impact of sugar spikes on their wellbeing. In this snippet (#144 Flatten Your Glucose Levels), we focus on Jessie’s backstory and what led her to pursue a career in science and the revelation of how her own glucose rollercoasters were affecting her health.Professor David Nutt is at the forefront of psychedelic research and on this podcast (#211 Psychedelics and the new era of Psychiatry) he breaks down what these molecules are, the research behind them and why he believes they have great promise for mental health and beyond.And lastly, but by no means least, my conversation with Sheila Dillon (#156 The Power of Food). For children and adolescents, frequent family meals were associated with better health outcomes. But why? #221 ADHD and diet with Dr Miguel Toribio-Mateas DProf
Can you eat to improve symptoms of ADHD? That is the subject of conversation today with the wonderful Dr Miguel, who is a clinical neuroscientist and applied microbiologist with a longstanding background in human nutrition. He has a BSc (Hons) Nutritional Medicine, a MSc Clinical Neuroscience and a DProf (PhD) Gut Microbiome & Mental Health.According to Dr Miguel, the top healthy habits for a fulfilling life include eating fermented foods daily, getting a diversity of plants to support your brain-gut superhighway as well as connecting with people who bring you joy and ditching those who are toxic. As part of his giving back, Dr Miguel is the Neurodiversity Lead of the Primary Care & Community Neurology Society (also known as the Person-Centered Neurosciences Society), and he supports youth mental health programmes at the London-based Body & Soul charity. He also holds an honorary research fellow position at the School of Psychology, Cardiff University.As we do a deep dive into the science of food and neurodiversity (spanning a spectrum of disorders) we also talk about Miguel's personal experience.In 2020, Dr Miguel burned out and in the middle of a terrifying nervous system meltdown, he had the most wonderful “a-ha!” moment. As a scientist, he was able to match what the literature says about stored trauma with his own personal experience, realising the far-reaching consequences of adverse childhood events on and beyond the gut. This time in Dr Miguel’s life - leading to his late diagnosis with ADHD and autism - provided him with the opportunity to layer a trauma- and lived-experience-informed approach over the evidence-based practice approach that he’d been used to for years. #220 Menopause and South Asian women with Chef Romy Gill MBE
Chef Romy Gill MBE, who is a dear friend, is on the podcast today sharing her culinary wisdom, her energy and passion for food as well as her voice for women of colour and the stigma that still surrounds the menopause.Romy is a celebrity Indian chef, food and travel writer and broadcaster. She was the owner and head chef at Romy’s Kitchen and in 2016 she was appointed an MBE in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours list. Today we talk about her lived experience of the menopause, how changing her training from mostly running based to include strength training completely shifted her weight. We also talk about women from SA backgrounds and why it’s still an uphill battle to break down the taboo of women's health in general, plus the spices with medicinal properties, how to combine flavourful ingredients for health and why the backbone of Indian cooking is healthier than most people think.You’ll find her on BBC1's Ready Steady Cook, Sunday Brunch, The One Show, Country Life, Celebrity MasterChef, The Hairy Bikers’ Comfort Food, James Martin’s Saturday Morning and she is also a regular on BBC Radio 4's Food Programme. #217 Inflammation, the silent fire within with Dr Shilpa Ravella MD

Shilpa’s eloquent writing style complements the wonder of inflammation as a benevolent, yet destructive force that weaves it’s thread through a multitude of conditions including auto-immunity, cardiovascular disease and obesity.Dr Shilpa Ravella is a gastroenterologist who treats a range of general gastrointestinal ailments and has unique experience in managing complex rare diseases, including intestinal failure and intestinal or multiple-organ transplantation. She’s also an expert in the field of nutrition and is particularly interested in the interactions between lifestyle, the microbiome and the immune system.Today we talk about inflammation and cancer, immunity, dementia, cardiovascular disease as well as the components of an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle such as spices, fibres, greens and exercise. Fasting is one of the hottest topics at the moment and I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr Mindy Pelz to dive into this fascinating area. Like I always say to people, fasting is potentially a phenomenal, multifunctional tool that we can use to improve our immune system and our metabolic health. But the dose of fasting, the method of fasting and whether fasting is at all appropriate if you have a pre-existing condition, are all questions that are very hard to answer.Adding further complexity to the decision of how and when to fast, is the menstrual cycle. For years Mindy has been educating 1000s of women online on how to make the best use of this tool with the consideration of their shifting hormones.We go into a lot of detail today, but as ever there are so many more things that we need to discuss and will probably have to do a part 2 at some point in the future.Do check out Mindy’s fabulous book, “Fast like a Girl”, I’ve been recommending it to everyone and it’s a great resource for anyone interested in fasting as a tool for health.We also talk about some caveats of fasting and who fasting is NOT for in this episode. Do we eat too much sugar? This is a question I pose myself, as I like to trick myself into thinking that because I eat so well the majority of the time it makes up for my sweet tooth. But actually when I review my eating habits, I always choose dessert, I tend to snack a lot during the day and I eat way too much ‘healthy’ chocolate.And perhaps after hearing Dr. Robert Lustig, Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of California, talk on the subject today, you might be inclined to review your sugar intake yourself.Dr. Lustig has become a leading public health authority on the impact sugar has on fueling the diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome epidemics, and on addressing changes in the food environment to reverse these chronic diseases.Today we talk about why excess sugar is so bad for our health, what the benefits of cutting our sugar intake could be, why there is nothing wrong with fruit, the differences between sugars, the blood tests we should be ordering and of course why a calorie is not necessarily a calorie.Dr Lustig also reveals some incredibly exciting research that he and friend of the podcast Dr Rachel Gow have collaborated on, where they re-engineered ultraprocessed food to be metabolically healthy. #208 How unhealed trauma leads to symptoms and how to heal with Benjamin Fry
There is growing recognition that many mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, poor cognition and memory (as well as physical issues), are the results of the high prevalence of trauma, post-traumatic stress and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and that only by addressing trauma and rebalancing the nervous system can we address these mental and physical health issues successfully and sustainably.What I wanted to know from my guest today Benjamin Fry, a leading psychotherapist in the UK, was what are the signs someone has unhealed trauma in their life? #207 Why dietary guidelines are wrong and how algorithms can help with Prof Eran Segal
Can an algorithm help us eat better? That’s the question I’ll be discussing with my guest today, Professor Eran Segal, a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS), heading a lab with computational biologists and experimental scientists who have extensive experience in machine learning and computational biology allowing them to decipher how something as complex as diet, interacts with something infinitely more complex … us.Our genes, microbes, and unique environments are obviously going to impact how we respond to different foods and diets and Professor Segal is on a mission to figure out how we can use his favouroite tool, algorithms, to help us eat according to our unique biology.We first dive into our unique blood sugar responses and their seminal paper published in Cell that demonstrated the drastically different responses we all have and potential reasons why. Travelling across generations and cultures from around the world to discuss traditional medicine practices, whether they hold up to scientific scrutiny and if these herbs and spices have a place in our drug cabinets as well as our kitchens.Dr Willcox has worked as a GP in the NHS since 2003 and currently works in a practice in Oxford. His research interests at the University of Southampton include global health, clinical trials of herbal medicines, and improving care for vulnerable people.Dr Willcox has researched different aspects of primary health care in low-income countries, with a particular focus on child health, malaria and traditional medicines.He has been involved in several clinical trials of herbal medicines in Uganda, Madagascar, Mali and the UK and coordinates the RITAM network (Research Initiative on Traditional Antimalarial Methods).We’re talking about a bunch of compounds today including moringa, ginseng, cinnamon, nigella, fenugreek, psyllium and will be discussing their potential mechanism of action plus the evidence for them. Dr Sheri Dewan is on the show today, a full-time, board-certified neurosurgeon practicing in Chicago, who is one of roughly 200 board-certified women neurosurgeons in the United States. And today we’re talking about her journey into neurosurgery, that’s she’s penned in a fantastic book “Cutting a Path”.And despite the very specific experience of her journey to becoming a specialist surgeon in a male dominated field, battling gender and ethnic barriers, her story is one that I think many people can connect with. I naturally assumed it was just me. Overworking and undersleeping is bound to have this effect, but there appears to be something more insidious going on as Johann explains in todays episode. And if you’re like me, you’re definitely not alone.There are 5 core ideas that we explore today:One: Your attention didn’t collapse - it was stolen.Two: If your Screentime shows that you spend more than three hours a day on your phone, then you are losing far more than just time. Your brain can only produce one or two thoughts in your conscious mind at once. We’re very, very single-minded.Three: The covid crisis has flipped many of us into a state called hypervigilance, which is ruining our focus.Four: The way we eat in the Western world is severely damaging our attention and focus.Five: We can only get out of this crisis if we respond as individuals, by making changes in our own lives and our children’s lives, to protect ourselves from forces invading our attention. You’re in for an absolute treat today, especially if you’re a passionate medic with a penchant for nutritional medicine like me, because this doctor is making some huge waves.Chi-Chi is also a GP Appraiser for NHS England and Vice Chair of Ascension Trust, an organisation known for initiatives that seek to help the vulnerable in society. And leads the AT Beacon Project, a health initiative of Ascension Trust working on the ground in the heart of neighbourhoods to address health inequalities. #190 Reduce your anxiety in 10 minutes with Owen O’Kane
There are a few problems with therapy. It’s often hard to access, it can be costly, it’s hard to find the time to engage with a therapist and there is still, of course, a huge stigma around it.But we know that it is a scientifically proven method of improving mental wellness. It improves brain chemistry and can reprogram neuropathways to help a person function in more helpful ways.And that’s why I love the premise of Owen O’Kane’s latest book “How to be your own Therapist”. Teaching you the key fundamentals of therapy and how to apply these to your own life, alongside targeted tasks that only take 10 minutes a day.All these techniques are steeped in a range tools including CBT, CFT, mindfulness, IP therapy, EMDR which why I absolutely trust and value Owen’s work so much.Owen O’Kane, psychotherapist and former NHS Clinical Lead has been on the podcast before. We talked about where he grew up in Northern Ireland during 'The Troubles,' the perfect training ground for understanding the anxious mind due to the conflict and fear that existed in the region. He’s also a former palliative care nurse.
