Ep 64Get Ready to BIFF Your High Conflict Ex with Bill Eddy on The Divorce & Beyond Podcast with Susan Guthrie, Esq. #160
In this very special episode, Susan Guthrie speaks with the leading high conflict divorce expert in the world, Attorney, Mediator and Therapist, Bill Eddy, who shares the fundamentals of his BIFF Method for managing communication with a high conflict ex! Whether you are divorcing a narcissist or are embroiled in any difficult relationship, a hallmark of a high conflict case is the flood of hostile calls, emails and texts that are repeatedly sent by one or both of the parties. This barrage often flows over into social media and into conversations with others. The constant cycle of conflict is crazy-making and seemingly impossible to control but that was until Bill Eddy and his BIFF method arrived! With the release of the third book in the BIFF series, "BIFF for Co-Parent Comunication," Bill Eddy helps you to regain a sense of control and peace that will benefit both your life and that of your children. The BIFF method will help you to craft responses to the hostile communications from your ex that will defuse the conflict and remove you from the cycle. Simply put, being Brief, Informative, Friendly and Firm (BIFF) is your key to freedom and there is simply no better guide out of the darkness of a high conflict relationship than Bill Eddy! In this episode Bill shares: The simple logic of being brief, informative, friendly and firm and why it works. How YOU decide what kind of response you will receive from your ex. Why you need to absolutely avoid the 3 A's. A simple substitute for saying "I'm sorry . . ." Why Bill says you should get Miranda Rights before you go on social media. AND SO MUCH MORE! This episode is absolute GOLD for anyone experiencing difficulty in communicating with a volatile ex so listen today and start taking your life back one BIFF at a time! Ep 51TOXIC MASCULINITY: The Untold Cost to Men AND Women with Dr. Elizabeth Cohen (a/k/a The Divorce Doctor) on The Divorce & Beyond Podcast with Susan Guthrie, Esq. #147
Dr. Elizabeth Cohen, a/k/a The Divorce Doctor returns to the podcast for the third in the blockbuster series of episodes focused on mental health, divorce and trauma. In this episode, Susan Guthrie and Dr. Elizabeth delve into the culture of toxic masculinity that has been pervasive over centuries in our world and explain the untold cost of these societal mores on men AND women and how we all can begin to change the paradigm. “Man up.” “Be a man.” “Shake it off, there’s nothing to cry about.” We have all heard, and perhaps even said or thought these phrases ourselves. They seem innocuous enough but when you delve into the culture of what it means to be a man, the huge cost, in emotional and physical health to men becomes clear. That cost carries over into the lives of women as the men we love are unable to express their emotions and suffer the health challenges that stem from society’s unwillingness to allow men to be vulnerable. This episode was inspired by an email from listener, Mark Whorle (THANK YOU MARK!), who wrote in asking for guidance in finding emotional support and resources for divorce that are geared toward men, or are gender neutral. This outreach from Mark exemplifies the culture of toxic masculinity that impacts women as well as men. Toxic masculinity feeds the patriarchy – it is a vicious cycle that we all need to break. Dr. Elizabeth and Susan explore the myriad ways that toxic masculinity pervade our lives and how it is manifested during divorce as well as how we each can start to change the conversation. Start here, listen and be a part of the change! Ep 48The Best Thing to Happen to Divorce in Ages with Very Special Guest, Gabrielle Hartley on The Divorce & Beyond Podcast with Susan Guthrie, Esq. #144
In this episode, Susan Guthrie is joined by Leading Divorce Attorney and Best-Selling Author (and Susan's Work BFF!), Gabrielle Hartley, to talk about the BEST THING to happen to Divorce in ages: Online Divorce Mediation. With the advent of Covid, many court systems around the country (and the world) are effectively closed or operating only on an emergency basis, and in most cases, they don't consider your divorce an emergency! This can affect divorcing couples in many ways; if they are thinking of divorce, they often can't file and even when they do, they can't get into court. For ongoing cases, couples can't get court dates for hearings or trials so are on indefinite hold, and for those who are done but need help due to changes that have occured, as they have for so many during Covid with job loss and health issues, they also struggle to get a court date. Even as some courts open for limited business, the backlog of cases that has been building for months, will take years, if not decades, to subside. It's just one long, never-ending DIVORCE LIMBO! So what is a couple to do? One of the best (and only) options for many is online divorce mediation and it's a great option! Both Susan and Gabrielle have been conducting mediations online with couples for years, long before Covid made the practice popular. There are many reasons, beyond social distancing and safety, that make online mediation particularly well-suited for divorce cases. This conversation between two of the top online divorce mediators in the country will enlighten you and show you how you can mediate online and move through your divorce and BEYOND! Some MORE Highlights from the Episode: Find out what the mediation process looks like online. Hear why not having to sit in the same room with your spouse can be so helpful to the process. Discover why online mediation is often even faster and easier than in-person mediation. Learn about Gabrielle's innovative online mediation blitz, her Positive Divorce approach and how you can learn to be Better Apart with her book and program! There are just so many benefits to mediating your divorce online, listen to this episode and get your life out of LIMBO! For More Information on This Week's Special Guest: Gabrielle Hartley Esq., is a leading divorce attorney, online mediator and creator of The Better Apart Method. She's known for keeping 99% of her cases at the negotiation table and out of the courtroom. Her Book, Better Apart; The Radically Positive Way to Separate was given a glowing endorsement from Gwyneth Paltrow, and People Magazine. Gabrielle is a sought after divorce expert in the media and has been quoted in the New York TImes, Psychology Today, Vice, Thrive Global, and Yoga Journal to name a few. Ep 47Parenting Plans Aren't for Parents: How to Create a Plan that Works For Your Kids with Top Parenting Expert, Christina McGhee on The Divorce & Beyond Podcast with Susan Guthrie, Esq. #143
In this episode, Parenting Expert, Christina McGhee returns to talk with Susan Guthrie about all of the things that parents need to consider in order to create a parenting plan that truly works for the children. So often when parents sit down to figure out the parenting plan they pull out a calendar and start carving up the time with the kids as if it were another commodity like the bank accounts and debts. In fact, although the amount of time that children spend with each parent needs to be "equitable" it doesn't need to be 50/50. In fact, 50/50 rarely actually does (or should) exist. Find out what the most important considerations actually are for parents who are setting up a time-sharing plan with their children and what will make it successful for the kids. LISTENER QUESTION: Christina starts the episode by answering the following question from listener, Kim Cuizon about how conflict between parents affects the kids: "How about when parents don't talk at all but at the same time there are no conflicts? They're not close enough as friends but are civil during drop offs. Will this kind of apathetic relationship have lasting effects on the kids?" GREAT QUESTION AND A VERY COMMON PHENOMENA! What to know the answer? Listen in! (If you have a question for Christina, send and email to [email protected] and you might hear your question answered on a future episode!) Some MORE Highlights from the Episode: How important is being fair in creating a successful parenting plan for kids? What is the two-home concept and how can parents support it? Learn how important it is properly message parenting time to your kids. Discover why your parenting plan will likely change over time. Hear why you should always follow up a verbal agreement with a quick text or email. And much more so that you can find just the right plan FOR YOUR KIDS! ***SPECIAL SERIES OF EPISODES on DIVORCE AND PARENTING! She is also the author of the highly acclaimed book, Parenting Apart: How separated and divorced parents can raise happy and secure kids. As a child of divorce and as a bonus mom (aka step-mom), Christina gets plenty of opportunities to practice what she preaches. Together she and her husband have four “adultish” children (2 bonus, 2 bio), an ever-growing community of rescue dogs/cats, and an obscene number of chickens. Ep 46The Episode That Just Might Save Your Life with Wendy Dolin, the Founder of MISSD on The Divorce & Beyond Podcast with Susan Guthrie, Esq. #142
In this episode Susan Guthrie speaks with Wendy Dolin, the Founder of MISSD, about the potentially fatal drug reaction known as akathisia and how speaking to Wendy recently saved Susan when she had her own near miss. This is truly information that may save your life or the life of someone you love and Wendy's journey beyond the heartbreak of losing her beloved husband and how she took that journey to turn it into a mission to create akithisia awareness around the globe! That day ten years ago started much as any other and Wendy Dolin had no idea that when her husband Stewart went off to work that day he would never return home again. The tragedy that befell her husband and family that day took Wendy on a journey through the world of drug trials, ground-breaking litigation and world-wide advocacy to found MISSD (The Medication-Induced Suicide Prevention and Education Foundation in Memory of Stewart Dolin), dedicated to creating awareness around akathisia and helping us to be educated consumers of prescription and over the counter drugs. What is akathisia? Akathisia is a disorder induced as a side effect of medications (including, but not limited to, SSRI's and antipsychotics), which can cause a person such intense inner restlessness that the sufferer is driven to violence and/or suicide. There are many permutations of akathisia but the number one thing to take away from this episode? Anytime you start, stop or change the dosage of a medication, BE AWARE! This is when you are most vulnerable for akathisia or other negative effects of medication. MISSD is not anti-medication but is pro-information so be sure to listen and be informed today! Some Highlights the Episode: Find out some of the medications can lead to akathisia - many of them are probably in your medicine cabinet right now! Learn what symptoms to look for that might indicate you need to get some help. Hear how Wendy was inspired to take her tragedy and turn it into advocacy by founding MISSD. Discover the poignant meaning behind the acronym for MISSD. Find out why members of the military may be even more at risk. Hear why the information in this episode is so on point for the COVID vaccine we are all waiting for and why we need to be concerned. Wendy and her mission with MISSD are a truly inspirational story of life BEYOND tragedy so listen to this episode today! FOR AN EXTENDED VERSION OF MY INTERVIEW WITH WENDY, GO TO THE DIVORCE & BEYOND PODCAST YOUTUBE CHANNEL WHERE WE CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION INCLUDING: WENDY'S GROUND-BREAKING LEGAL FIGHT WITH THE DRUG COMPANIES WHAT SHE LEARNED ABOUT DRUG TRIALS THAT WE ALL NEED TO KNOW, AND FOR THOSE REBUILDING THEIR LIVES AFTER DIVORCE, HOW WENDY FOUND HER STRENGTH TO THRIVE AFTER TRAGEDY. More information about Wendy Dolin and MISSD: MISSD (The Medication-Induced Suicide Prevention and Education Foundation in Memory of Stewart Dolin) is a unique 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the memory of Stewart and other victims of akathisia by raising awareness and educating the public about the dangers of akathisia. MISSD aims to ensure that people suffering from akathisia's symptoms are accurately diagnosed so that needless deaths are prevented. A website, the creation of educational materials and support of conferences will help to raise awareness and knowledge of akathisia and medication-induced suicides. Again, we feel it's important to note that we are not anti-drug, and recognize that prescription drugs can be positive and life-saving for many individuals. We are for truth in disclosure, honesty in reporting and legitimate drug trials. Ep 33Getting Through Tough Times by Stepping into Your Authenticity with the Author of “Soar,” Pamela Savino on The Divorce & Beyond Podcast with Susan Guthrie, Esq. #129
On this episode Susan Guthrie, Esq. speaks with Coach, Podcast Host and the Author of "Soar," Pamela Savino, on a topic perfectly timed for the tough times that can occur in divorce and on a broader scope, are occuring in the world at large as COVID, societal unrest and financial difficulties create stress and strain in our lives every day. Pam's decision to move through the tough times in her divorce by stepping into her own authentic life will inspire you and help you as you face your own challenging times! A few years back, Pam Savino and her husband decided to divorce. As she shares in her wonderful book, Soar, there was nothing "bad" happening, but the relationship was not working for either of them. The news left friends and family shocked as they were that picture postcard perfect family who "had it all" but they knew that it was the right choice for them. That is not to say that the divorce was not full of tough times, there were plenty, and Pam shares several stories that may sound very familiar to you such as telling the kids, dealing with the 'til death do us part issue and keeping the divorce a secret from everyone until the time was right. Pam's lessons on leaving behind the life that society and other people tell you is right, and stepping into your own authentic self, perhaps for the very first time, is the true path through the hard times ahead to a a happier and more fulfilled life! Some highlights from this episode: Find out how Pam, and not her attorney, "drove the bus" in the divorce process and how Pam found the strength to make those "big decisions." (7:35) What does "living authentially" mean for Pam and why does she think it is the key to getting through those tough moments in divorce and in life? (9:17) Where does the shift from inauthentic to authentic living happen? (11:50) Why does Pam say that in the challenging moments that is when we find our greatness? (15:45) Why were the first 15 seconds of telling the kids about the divorce the most important? (20:20) What is a "soul contract" and how did it help Pam to explain the divorce to her daughter? (27:00) The questions to ask yourself to "reframe" your tough moments: (35:40) What am I meant to learn from this? How can I allow this experience to become a better person? Instead of choosing hate or anger, how can I choose compassion? There are just so many moments in our life where change, difficulty and adversity make us stronger and help us to define what is truly authentic for our own lives so take a listen today and let Pam help you to find your way to your AUTHENTIC LIFE! Ep 32Parental Alienation Solutions that WORK! with Special Guest, Dorcy Pruter on The Divorce & Beyond Podcast with Susan Guthrie, Esq. #128
What if we told you that you could reunify with your alienated child in just FOUR DAYS?! Sounds too good to be true doesn't it? The good news is that in this episode, Susan Guthrie, Esq. speaks with Dorcy Pruter, the Founder of the Conscious Co-Parenting Institute, who has a 100% success rate in recovering children in their 4-day workshop! Parental alienation is one of the most heartbreaking and intractible issues that can arise in a family and historically, courts, attorneys and therapists have struggled to change the paradigm. Even when an alienated parent files all the motions and gets all the forensic reports, everything takes so long that it often seems pointless. That is where Dorcy and her coaches and professionals come in. They have different programs that are all successful in bringing families back together and allowing targeted parents to reunify with their children - even after years of separation. This episode is the doorway to hope and a path to regaining their children for so many parents and children who have been out there suffering for years! Some Highlights from this Episode: What is "parental alienation" and why do Susan and Dorcy put "air quotes" around the term? Discover how alienation is actually a form of both child abuse and intimite partner abuse. Hear why some families actually AGREE in mediation to enter into the Conscious Co-Parenting Reunification workshop. Why do you need a protective custody order to get the process started and how do you do that? What needs to happen after the first 4-day workshop to insure that the kids stay recovered? How do you get reluctant children to participate? AND MUCH, MUCH, MORE so don't miss this episode! The difference is, when we sit down at the table to negotiate our divorce settlement with our soon to be ex-spouse, the emotions are high and the decisions can be some that will impact our lives and our family for years to come. Ep 29Redefining Motherhood: A Brave New Perspective from a Non-Custodial Mom, Susan Eckstein on The Divorce & Beyond Podcast with Susan Guthrie, Esq. #125
Motherhood. The word alone is emotionally charged and the role of a mother has been prescribed and defined for centuries as the primary caregiver and nurturer, but over the years, society has layers so many more labels and strictures on the role. What makes a good mother? Why must there be a definition and why is there such stigma if a mother does not fit the societal norm? Our guest this week, Susan Eckstein, is a non-conforming mother who bravely shares her story of breaking the mold and redefining motherhood in a way that worked best for her family and that allowed her to show up as her best self for her children. Along the way, she faced shame, both internal and external, and pain as others, particularly women, dismissed and condemned her decisions. Susan has come forward to tell the tale of her journey in order to help other mothers, who face difficult decisions about parenting their children in the way that allows both mother and child to thrive. This is a story that needs to be told and we all need to listen. Highlights from this episode: What factors led to Susan's decision that her boys should live with their Dad? How did the phrase "keep the keys" help the family to restructure in a healthy way? Who were the worst critics of Susan's decision to be a non-custodial mother? How did a business coach help Susan to find her way out of her struggle with shame? How can you throw out society's scorecard for motherhood to show up as your best self for your kids? This is the story no one will talk about but Susan bravely shares her journey so that we can all be better parents and live happier lives. Listen. More about this week's guest: Susan Eckstein is an empowerment coach and speaker helping divorced moms lead with their values so they can define motherhood for themselves. Susan leads her clients through a life-changing empowerment process where they challenge their stories, change their beliefs, step into their badassery and show up more powerfully for their children. After becoming a non-custodial mother following her divorce, Susan felt ashamed for years. However, once she stopped measuring her worth against what society says is a gold-star mother, she empowered herself and created her own unique relationship with her two boys. Susan now helps other divorced moms release their shame, reconnect to their power and define motherhood for themselves. A former mindset coach, personal trainer and triathlon coach, Susan has coached hundreds of men and women to successfully compete in their dream athletic events, including triathlons, marathons and adventure races. We often look for peace and happiness from external sources but that path leads to disappointment. In fact, that is often a path to further hurt and trauma. On this episode of The Divorce & Beyond Podcast, Susan Guthrie speaks with Kundalini Yoga Expert, Dya Kaur about the inward path to healing and your new future through yoga, meditation and yes, even a little bit of sex. Trauma informs our lives in so many ways and can stay in our soul for years after the incident or experience that hurt us. Divorce is often one of the most traumatic experiences that we can undergo and so many individuals have enormous difficulty in moving past that hurt. Leading Kundalini Yoga expert, Dya Kaur of Wanderlust Yoga in Los Angeles, joins Susan on this episode, which was taped in person in California, to share her wisdom and insights from years of teaching the technology of kundalini yoga, meditation, and spiritual life coaching to help people to move past their trauma to heal, live fully and embrace a new future. Ep 24Lessons from Marriage Story: What it Got Right and What it Got OH SO WRONG! with Special Guest, Professor Carolyn Kaas on The Divorce & Beyond Podcast with Susan Guthrie, Esq. #120
The movie "Marriage Story" garnered a great deal buzz and won a number of awards but is it accurate? Is that what divorce really looks like? On this episode Susan Guthrie speaks with Law Professor, Carolyn Kaas, to reveal not only what the movie got right, but more importantly, what it got OH SO WRONG! If you are worried this is your future, be sure to listen today! The award winning movie, "Marriage Story" created quite a stir in the world of divorce and captured multiple award nominations for not only the film, but also the actors. In fact, Laura Dern won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her portrayal of a divorce attorney reportedly patterned on celebrity divorce attorney, Laura Wasser. But just how accurate is the depiction of divorce in the movie? On this week's episode, Susan Guthrie speaks with Professor Carolyn Kaas, who will be incorporating the movie into her curriculum for the future lawyers of America as a teaching tool of what to do, and more importantly, of WHAT NOT TO DO. Susan and Professor Kaas bring you the insider view of where the movie hits the nail on the head, and where it veers far off the factual path. If you are facing divorce and are worried that the movie is a crystal ball of your future, find out what you can do to be sure that your divorce unfolds differently and learn from the teachable moments that Professor Kaas will be using to help launch the future of the legal profession! Highlights from the Episode: What about this movie does Professor Kaas feel makes it the "perfect teaching tool?" How does putting on the "glasses of trial prep" right from the beginning hijack your divorce process? How does their approach to the process change as many divorce attorneys practice longer and longer in the field? Is the "2nd Happy Halloween" ending of the movie a realistic portrayal? Is there a different function for a lawyer than to be a "weapon or a shield?" What is the worst part about the mediation "fail" in the movie? AND MUCH, MUCH MORE! Be sure to listen - you'll want to watch the movie again with new eyes once you have listened to this episode! Learn More About Professor Kaas and Quinnipiac University School of Law: Carolyn "Carrie" Kaas is an Associate Professor of Law at Quinnipiac University School of Law.
