Ep 243Metropolitan Division Preview
Frank and Jason are continuing on with their season previews as we are officially under a week away from the start of the NHL Season. Today, they focused on the Metropolitan Division. Before they got into that though, Frank emptied his notebook after being at the NHL Board of Governors meeting. A lot of people noticed that Gary Bettman seems pretty certain that the salary cap will rise to at least $87 million next summer. That news is significant, but Frank was more interested in what the Commissioner had to say about potential expansion.Gregor pushed back on the idea a little bit, saying that it would weaken the talent pool. Frank also pushed back on the idea of Atlanta being a potential destination. From there, they dug into the metro and started with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team was riddled with injuries last season and while some there was some optimism around the team heading into the season, the Mike Babcock drama has overshadowed that.Neither Frank or Jason gave the Flyers or Blue Jackets much of a chance to make the playoffs. They did leave the window open for both the Capitals and Penguins to make a return to the big dance after missing in 2022-23.After a fresh edition of Buy or Sell, they dug into the teams that did make the playoffs last season. The Islanders seem ripe for a step back and Frank thinks that the Rangers may be in a similar positon. The final two teams they talked about, the Devils and Hurricanes, both seem like a legitimate Stanley Cup Contenders.1:10 - Board of Governors notebook (salary cap, expansion)10:05 - Columbus Blue Jackets13:10 - Philadelphia Flyers19:10 - Washington Capitals25:20 - Pittsburgh Penguins34:30 - Buy or Sell42:00 - New York Islanders49:30 - New York Rangers57:55 - New Jersey Devils1:01:05 - Carolina HurricanesWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 242Pacific Division Preview
The calendar has flipped to October and that means hockey season is just around the corner. In fact, we are less than ten days away from the start of the NHL regular season and with that in mind, Jason and Frank decided to kick off their season previews on today’s episode of the podcast. With the Vegas Golden Knights coming into the year as defending Stanley Cup Champions, the guys figured it’d be fitting to preview the Pacific Division first. They started at the bottom of the division, where both the Sharks and Ducks finished last season. Do either of them have a chance to make a big jump up the standings this season? From there, they went up north to talk about two of the Western Canadian teams that missed the playoffs last season. Frank thinks that there’s a legit chance that both of these teams find a way to get back to the postseason this year while Gregor shared some concerns he has with both of their rosters. To break things up a little bit, Tyler jumped in for a Pacific Division-themed edition of Fill in The Blank, brought to you by Betano. In the back half of the pod, they talked about the teams in the division that did make the playoffs last year. Frank shared his pick for who’s going to miss the playoffs out of that group and they also debated if the eventual Stanley Cup Champion could come out of the Pacific Division. It feels like all three of the Edmonton Oilers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Los Angeles Kings have a real chance to do it.4:15 - San Jose Sharks9:46 - Anaheim Ducks13:50 - Vancouver Canucks26:30 - Calgary Flames38:15 - Seattle Kraken54:00 - Los Angeles Kings1:01:30 - Edmonton Oilers1:08:10 - Vegas Golden KnightsWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 241Playoff Contenders in the East & Frank’s Pre-Season Tour
The pre-season is officially underway and after a long summer off, there are NHL games being played. Things got going this weekend with the NHL’s Global Series down in Australia. The games produced some great highlights, but things were close to going off the rails down under, as Frank explained.Frank’s doing his own pre-season tour right now, as he’s currently in Vancouver to get a feel for how the Canucks are shaping up heading into this season. That led into some conversation about the team’s core and how important this year is for them. From there, they talked about the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. There are a handful of teams that missed the playoffs last season but went out and got better this summer. Can teams like the Senators, Sabres, and Red Wings improve enough to knock a team like the Islanders out of the playoffs? What about the Penguins and Capitals? The East will be tight this season. The guys then brought in Tyler for a new round of Fill In The Blank. He had them compete head-to-head and try to guess the line of some futures bets over at Betano. From there, they wrapped up by talking about the expectations in St. Louis. Their core is aging, but are they still good enough to compete for a playoff spot?1:25 - This season for the Canucks12:25 - Games in Australia17:30 - Eastern Conference playoff contenders28:15 - Fill in the Blank37:05 - Expectations in St. LouisWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 240Trouble in Columbus : Mike Babcock Update
This past week has definitely come with some interesting news from around the league. In specific, for the Columbus Blue Jackets. There was plenty for Jason and Frank to get to on that topic and many more throughout the NHL.To start, they talked about the recent decision made by Mike Babcock to resign as the Head Coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Both Frank and Jason did a deep dive into the events that led to the departure, as well as providing their opinions on the situation. With NHL Training Camp just around the corner, they also touched on which players will be listed as a "P.T.O" heading into camp and will be competing for a roster spot for opening night in the regular season. They also talked about the Colorado Avalanche Goaltending question marks, and what opinions they could be looking at to help out between the pipes. Gavin Turinek also popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the; Alex DeBrincat projected Goal Total, the Vezina Trophy odds , and if the Vancouver Canucks could make a push for the playoffs this season. To close out the show, Frank and Jason discussed which NHL Head coaches and executives could be on the hot seat early in the season. 0:24 - Mike Babcock Update22:03 - P.T.O News25:05 - Colorado Avalanche Goaltending Question Mark(s)29:02 - Buy or Sell35:42 - NHL Training Camp Talk28:50 - Buy or Sell43:43 - Who is on the "Hot-Seat" heading into the season?Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 239The Season Is Under A Month Away
We are officially under a month away from the start of the NHL! With camps getting rolling and news still breaking, there was plenty for Jason and Frank to get to on a fresh edition of the podcast. To start, they talked about some of the rookie camps going on around the league and if there are any teams we should be keeping an eye on. That eventually turned into a conversation about the Anaheim Ducks and Trevor Zegras, who is still sitting without a contract as the regular season creeps closer. Frank gave us an update on that situation and Gregor talked about how ridiculous it will be if he doesn’t get a long-term deal soon. They also dug into the Jake Sanderson extension that broke last week. The Senators defenseman got himself a nice $62 million guaranteed before ever playing in his 100th career NHL game. Was this a good deal for both sides? The guys debated it.They also talked about a pair of interesting goalie situations from both conferences and whether or not there will be some teams scouring the waiver wire for help between the pipes when training camps conclude.Tyler also popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the Florida Panthers, Auston Matthews, Tage Thompson, and an interesting head-to-head bet on Betano.0:45 - Rookie watch4:00 - Latest on Trevor Zegras13:40 - Jake Sanderson’s extension17:58 - Devon Levi & The Sabres19:00 - Cam Talbot & The Kings28:50 - Buy or Sell42:40 - Seider & PowerWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 238Who Are The Tier One Cup Contenders?
Jason and Frank are back after another summer hiatus to break down what’s going on around the hockey world. They started by talking about the Toronto Maple Leafs. It’s been a busy few weeks for the Leafs front office with extensions for both Auston Matthews and Sheldon Keefe getting done. What’s next? A lot of people would assume that an extension for William Nyland would be the next item for Brad Treliving to check off and Frank gave some insight into that situation. They also listed off some teams that they think are facing some serious pressure next season and also which teams they believe are true ‘tier one’ Stanley Cup Contenders. Frank listed off ten teams and Gregor said that’s too many, which led to a good debate about a few teams, one being the LA Kings.Tyler hopped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about some interesting betting lines that are available at Betano. Are people sleeping on the Coyotes? Can Crosby hit 30 goals? Will McDavid creep close to 60 again? Frank and Jason gave their thoughts on that. They wrapped up the show by talking about some free agents that are still sitting unsigned, including the NHL’s iron man Phil Kessel.1:30 - What’s next in Toronto?4:40 - Teams facing pressure12:50 - The goalie world16:40 - The Oilers24:05 - Tier one contenders29:30 - Buy or Sell45:30 - Unsigned free agentsWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 237How big will the Bruins step back be?
After another quick summer hiatus, Jason and Frank are back with a brand new episode of The DFO Rundown. Off the jump, the guys caught up a bit and talked about the summer coming to a close and their kids going back to school. The big news that’s dropped since their last podcast is that David Krejci will be retiring from the league. That means the Bruins won’t have their top two centres from last season and they don’t exactly have the cap space or assets to go out and make a huge splash.Frank walked through the hurdles that exist when it comes to a potential move for someone like Mark Schiefele. He also talked about some other reasons why the Bruins may be taking a pretty big step back next season. The Buffalo Sabres also made a trade this week, moving Ilya Lybuschkin to the Anaheim Ducks. The Sabres now have some more flexibility and Jason brought up the possibility of them adding Patrick Kane during the season. Frank thinks that they’re a playoff team this year. They also remembered the late Rick Jeanneret, who passed away this week at the age of 81.Jonathan Toews made a statement and while he isn’t retiring, he announced that he’s taking some time off. Is this is for ‘Captain Serious’? Frank and Jason talked about that.Tyler Yaremchuk then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he talked about some futures bets that are available at Betano.ca one of which involves Connor Bedard.6:10 - Krejci retires & the Bruins future12:58 - Sabres make a move17:25 - Toews makes a statement22:30 - Flames and Jets30:15 - Betano Futures BetsWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? WE HAVE A TRADE! After a lengthy process for the San Jose Sharks, they have officially found a trade partner for Erik Karlsson. With a brand new episode of the DFO Rundown unfolding, Frank and Jason start the show by discussing the three-team deal that will send the Norris Trophy winner to the Pittsburgh Penguins. How will this trade affect all the teams involved heading into next season? Frank and Jason both provide their initial analysis of the Blockbuster trade. Taking a look at some future lines from our friends at Betano, Frank gets Jason to give his predictions for some teams following their offseason moves. After a busy week in the NHL, the guys also shared their thoughts on Matt Dumba’s decision to sign with the Arizona Coyotes on a one-year deal.Jumping from there, we look at the Oilers decision to hire Jeff Jackson and how that could impact the long-term future of Connor McDavid in Edmonton. As player arbitration cases remain ongoing this offseason, the guys share why the Edmonton Oilers may be in the most challenging spot. Frank and Jason also share the details surrounding the completed arbitration cases.Jumping for there, we look at the current state of the Eastern Conference. Ep 234Alex DeBrincat Lands in Detroit
With some news breaking in the last 24 hours, we have a brand new episode of the podcast to break it all down. Tyler filled in for Gregor today as he and Frank talked about the Alex DeBrincat trade that finally came to fruition. It seemed like Detroit was always going to be the spot he landed, so what was the hold-up? Frank gave some insight into that. From there, they talked about the situation involving Filip Zadina in Detroit and also what the Ottawa Senators could get up to with their $5m+ in cap space. This led to some speculation about where UFA forward Vladimir Tarasenko could land. Some other news that we got from the past week around the NHL involves Kings Captain Anze Kopitar signing a two-year extension with the club. The list of players filing for salary arbitration also came out this week. Frank gave us the cases that he finds the most intriguing. They also hit on why the Calgary Flames have been so quiet this summer and the latest on the Tony DeAngelo to the Hurricanes trade that has been held up for quite some time.1:10 - DeBrincat to Detroit5:50 - Tarasenko to OTT?14:28 - Zadina walks away from money19:05 - Kopitar’s new deal23:45 - John Gibson30:05 - DeAngelo trade43:25 - What’s going on in Calgary & Winnipeg?Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 233Breaking Down Free Agency
Frank and Jason are back with a holiday Monday edition of The DFO Rundown. We are three days into NHL Free Agency and there have been plenty of headscratching moves. They guys eventually got to the signings that left them wondering what direction some teams are heading into but they started off by talking about their favourite moves from the early days of free agency. The New York Islanders were very active, but in the wrong way. The same could be said about the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. They went down as the losers of the day. So did teams like the Calgary Flames and Seattle Kraken, but for the opposite reasons. Those two didn’t add much and don’t look like playoff teams right now. They also spent some time talking about the Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche and New York Rangers.Tyler hopped in with a hot take edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the Leafs, Predators, Kings, and Vladimir Tarasenko.1:10 - Favorite signings4:50 - Teams who stayed quiet (CGY, SEA)15:50 - What are the Islanders doing?22:40 - Questionable moves in Pittsburgh26:50 - The Canes new blueline31:30 - The Sabres summer43:10 - Preds make big moves1:04:10 - Potential offer sheetsWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 232Free Agent Preview
Draft week in Nashville has come and gone. Heading into the week there were a lot of rumours about big trades and nothing really came to fruition as the league gathered at Bridgestone Arena. Why were things so quiet? Frank and Jason dug into that today on the pod.We did see a few moves like the Josh Bailey trade and subsequent buyout, the trade the Blackhawks made to acquire Corey Perry’s rights, and the Oilers move to clear out cap space. Frank talked about the chances that Perry actually signs in Chicago and Jason gave some insight into the Oilers decision to move on from both Kailer Yamamoto and Klim Kostin. From there, they talked about what they’re expecting to happen when July 1st when free agency opens. This year’s free agent class doesn’t feature a lot of high-end options, but there are plenty of useful players. They offered up a few predictions on what could happen this Saturday.Tyler also popped in for a fresh edition of Fill in the Blank to ask the guys about JT Compher, Blake Wheeler, and the rest of the decisions that the Jets have to make.0:42 - Draft recap8:55 - Day two trades20:15 - The goalie carousel24:40 - Capitals' & Islanders' offseason plans38:59 - Fill in the Blank45:30 - Oilers RW options, market for SoucyWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 231Draft Day Primer
It’s draft day in Nashville and there is a lot going on around the NHL. We had a handful of big trades yesterday and there are still a bunch of big rumors flying around. To kick off today’s podcast, Jason and Frank talked about where Matvei Michkov could wind up. As we draw closer to the draft, there are rumblings that he could go as high as second overall. Frank gave some insight into that and Gregor talked about why Michkov should be a top-five pick.Frank had some new names on his trade targets board and shared those on the pod. That led to some talk about the news we did get yesterday like the Toffoli trade out of Calgary. They also broke down the Alex Newhook trade. The guys were kind of on opposite sides when it comes to who won this deal. Frank also pointed out an interesting connection that could be the reason why the Canadiens gave up two good draft picks to bring in the former first-rounder.1:00 - Where will Michkov go?4:00 - The Habs & 5th overall11:15 - New trade targets14:00 - Newhook trade16:25 - Toffoli lands in NJ18:50 - The market for KarlssonWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 230We are Live in Nashville & Jarmo Kekäläinen joins the show
The crew is live in Nashville, Tennessee for a draft week edition of the podcast. There are a lot of rumors flying around as the league all convene in ‘The Music City’ for the NHL Draft.Pierre-Luc Dubois, Kevin Hayes, and Torey Krug have all had their names thrown around over the last few days and Frank gave an update on the status of a few deals that we’ve been hearing about over the last 48 hours. There are a handful of General Managers who will be very busy this week including Craig Conroy in Calgary, Danny Briere in Philadelphia, and Doug Armstrong in St. Louis. Frank says that there’s a chance that Armstrong moves two of the three first-round picks that he owns. Gregor gave some names that he thinks could be fits in those markets. When it comes to the actual draft, the biggest question is where will Matvei Michkov go? The Russian prospect is undoubtedly one of the best talents in the draft, but his contract status in the KHL could hurt his stock. Frank gave one team that he thinks could take the risk.Tyler hopped in for a Nashville-themed edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the vibes in Tennessee. They also talked about the NHL Awards before getting to their interview with Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekäläinen. Ep 229Decision time is looming in Calgary
We knew this summer could be a busy one for new Flames GM Craig Conroy and it’s sounding like that will be the case. To start today’s podcast, Frank gave an update on the Lindholm, Hanifin, and Backlund situations. Gregor gave his thoughts on what they should do in Calgary and floated out the idea of Conroy holding onto these assets, even if they don’t sign extensions. From there, Frank asked Jason about what Wild GM Bill Guerin could get up to this offseason. They have a clear need down the middle, but can they afford to bring in a legit number one centreman? They dissected the cap situation in Minnesota and debated whether or not the Wild have an appetite to make a big splash. Frank also listed some other teams that will be in the market for a high-end centre this summer. They then talked about the 2023 HHOF class, which is being dubbed ‘The Year of The Goalies’. Ep 228Carolina Hurricanes Assistant GM Eric Tulsky
We are back with a Monday edition of the podcast and to start things off, they dug into the Vancouver Canucks decision to buyout Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The move opens up a lot of cap space for this summer, but means his deal will be on the books for eight more seasons. Was it worth it? Frank and Jason debated it and also talked about where ‘OEL’ goes from here.Tyler popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank as well. He asked the guys about offseason plans for the Avalanche and Red Wings and which Canadian teams could also go the buyout route.Eric Tulsky joined to show at the 25 minute mark. The Carolina Hurricanes Assistant GM career path is one of the most unique in the NHL. He talked to Jason and Frank about when he first got bit by the hockey bug, his career before jumping into the NHL world, and how he sees the impact on analytics in the sport changing. He’s also been in the mix for a lot of opening General Manager jobs. Ep 227Offer Sheets & Offseason Talk
We are now officially in the offseason. Frank and Jason started the show with a little bit of talk about the Vegas Golden Knights winning The Stanley Cup and their cut-throat journey to becoming champions. Jason dismissed the idea that Golden Knights fans have had a tough six years while Frank pushed back on that. They then dug into the offseason talk. They started with the buyout window and then went on to talk about potential offer sheets. One team that could be vulnerable: the Edmonton Oilers. Could another team be interested in targeting Evan Bouchard? They debated that.Tyler then hopped in for Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the Jason Spezza hiring in Pittsburgh, how many buyouts we’ll see, and which one of the Panthers or Golden Knights has a better chance of getting back to the big dance next season. To wrap up the show, Jason shared his thoughts on the recent media layoffs, which affected his daily show in Edmonton. He and Frank talked about the opportunity that comes with fresh starts and that led into a conversation about both the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames and the big decisions that they’re facing this summer.Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Frank and Jason started the show by discussing what went down in game four, the uncertainty around the Panthers’ injuries, and what they need to do to get back in this series. The guys also broke the Damon Severson sign and trade. The offseason hasn’t even officially started yet and we have already seen a sign and trade and a three-way trade. The Blue Jackets have loaded up their blueline and now, the question is what can they do with their forward group in order to get back to the playoffs. In a new edition of Buy or Sell, things got intense as Tyler asked Frank and Jason about which centreman the Blue Jackets should target and it turned into a spirited debate about a certain player and if he’s going to be worth more than $8 million on his next deal. They wrapped up with some quick thoughts on the Ottawa Senators' ownership situation, which seems to be getting very messy and the Flames' decision to make Ryan Huska their new Head Coach.Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Ep 225Breaking Down The Spring Blockbuster!
We got off-season action! It’s only the beginning of June, but this week we saw the first blockbuster of the offseason as the LA Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, and Columbus Blue Jackets pulled off a three-team trade. Jason and Frank started the podcast by breaking down what each team gained in the deal. Was this a true win-win-win? They debated it off the jump today. The teardown is just starting in Philly, which lead to some talk about the future of Carter Hart. Frank says he’s really on the trading block while Gregor threw some cold water on one of the rumoured destinations for the Flyers goalie. They also talked about who else Danny Briere could be looking to trade in his first summer as Flyers GM.That wasn’t the only news of the week though. Cole Caufield and the Montreal Canadiens agreed to a big extension, which gives Kent Hughes and the Habs’ front office a lot of cost certainty as they continue their rebuild. The LA Kings also used their new-found cap space to sign Vlad Gavrikov to a two-year deal. The team reportedly wanted to go long-term with him, but the Russian defenseman wanted to bet on himself. Frank questioned that move.Tyler also hopped on for a new edition of Buy or Sell, brought to you by UFC 289. He asked the guys about the chances that we see another three-team trade this summer, Trevor Zegras’ next deal, and the market for Alex DeBrincat. Jason and Frank kicked off today’s episode by talking about the Golden Knights scoring five goals, the goaltending matchup in this series, and how Florida can bounce back. From there, they talked about some of the high-end goalies that are on the trade market this summer. Frank gave some insight into the futures of both Connor Hellebuyck and John Gibson while Gregor speculated on where each of those two could land. The Penguins and Kings are two teams that could be looking for upgrades between the pipes.Tyler then hopped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank presented by UFC 289. He asked them about how busy the Jets will be this summer and who will be the starting goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs. To wrap things up, they talked about the hiring of Mike Babcock in Columbus. Has he changed his ways? They debated that and talked about the fit between the Stanley Cup Champion and the group of players that the Blue Jackets have. Ep 223BREAKING: Pittsburgh Hires Kyle Dubas as POHO
We got breaking news while we recorded today’s podcast! The Pittsburgh Penguins named Kyle Dubas their new President of Hockey Operations. Why did Dubas choose this spot? Frank and Jason gave their thoughts on that to start the show. With a few days off before the Stanley Cup Final gets going, we got some news to chew on in the NHL. To kick off today’s podcast, Jason and Frank dug into the Brad Treliving hiring. He seemed like the obvious candidate, so the move wasn’t shocking. The guys explained why they like this hire and also, what’s on Treliving’s to-do list this summer. What does this mean for the futures of Matthews and Nylander? What about Head Coach Sheldon Keefe? Frank had some insight into that and Jason gave his thoughts on what Matthews’ next contract should look like. They also tried to cook up a mock trade between the Leafs and Hurricanes that involves Mitch Marner. From there, they got into the Nashville Predators hiring of Andrew Brunette. Frank was fired up about how the team handled the dismissal of John Hynes and Gregor also wondered about how quickly he could pop up with all the smoke that he’s talking to the New York Rangers.Tyler Yaremchuk also popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell brought to you by UFC 289. Ep 222The Stars Can Make History & The Senators Ownership Situation
The hockey calendar is slowing down, the but Western Conference Final is just heating up. The Dallas Stars have pushed the Golden Knights to game six and tonight, they have a chance to make history by bringing this series to a seventh game. Frank and Jason talked about that and the history being made in the NBA to start today’s podcast. While all of this is going down, the Florida Panthers are just sitting at home. Is all of this rest going to hurt them? Frank worries about Sergei Bobrovsky, who was as hot as he’s ever been. Could all of this time off throw him off his game? They took a break from talking NHL for a bit and talked about some of the other hockey going on around the world. The IIHF World Championships delivered some stunning results including Latvia defeating USA to win bronze and Germany making it all the way to the finals before ultimately losing to Canada.Tyler then hopped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about some big decisions 0:55 - Stars coming back7:40 - Panther’s chances10:40 - World Championships22:00 - Buy or Sell40:00 - Coaching vacancies Hosted on Acast. Ep 221Breaking Down The Top 50 Free Agents
We are potentially less than 24 hours from officially knowing what this year’s Stanley Cup Finals matchup will be. The Florida Panthers finished off their sweep of the Carolina Hurricanes in dramatic fashion last night and now tonight, the Vegas Golden Knights have a chance to do the same in their series against the Dallas Stars.Jason and Frank talked about each of those series and debated who’s going to be this year's playoff MVP to start today’s show. They also talked about what’s next for the Hurricanes after their season came to an end. Do they need to make sweeping changes? From there, they dug into Frank’s Top 50 Free Agents list. Even though there might not be any elite skill in this year’s class, there are still plenty of intriguing names on the market this summer. Gregor says as always, it’s buyer beware at this time of year and he says there are more mistakes than home runs in free agency.Tyler hopped in for Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about Jamie Benn’s cross-check and which non-playoff teams could be the most active this summer. They wrapped up the show by having a good laugh about the fake Frank Seravalli account that tricked a lot of hockey fans with a wild Tage Thompson rumour this week.2:00 - Panthers sweep Hurricanes15:40 - Hill powers Golden Knights19:40 - Free Agent talk36:02 - Fill in the Blank Hosted on Acast. Ep 220The Latest on Job Openings Around The League
Frank and Jason are back with a holiday Monday edition of the podcast, at least if you’re in Canada. If you’re in the United States, like Frank, it’s just a normal Monday version of the show.To start the show, they dug into the weekend results from each of the two Conference Finals. The Carolina Hurricanes can’t seem to solve Sergei Bobrovsky and as a result, are down 2-0 to the Florida Panthers after starting the series on home ice. Can the Canes find their offense or are the Panthers going to coast through this series? The Stars had a great chance to even up their series vs the Golden Knights but some late-game gaffes cost them and now they’re down 2-0 heading back home. Can they turn it around and save their season? They then turned to some off-season topics and started with the big moves in Toronto. Jason and Frank both had some passionate thoughts about the way Kyle Dubas exited his job and the stunning manner in which the Leafs moved on from him as General Manager. They also hit on the expected hiring of Craig Conroy as GM in Calgary and what he’ll need to do this summer with the Flames roster.Frank also had some info on some other openings around the league and the ownership situation in Ottawa.Tyler also had some fresh Buy or Sell questions before the end of the pod.1:00 - Conference Finals Recaps11:45 - Leafs move on from Dubas19:40 - Penguins GM opening & Sens ownership25:50 - Buy or Sell40:42 - Conroy to be Flames GM44:35 - Blue Jackets HC job Hosted on Acast. Ep 219It's time for the Coyotes to leave Arizona
The Conference Finals are finally getting underway after a few days off. Jason and Frank eventually got to previewing the two series that will decide who ultimately battles for The Stanley Cup but first, they had to dive into the story that has been dominating the hockey world for the past 72 hours: the Arizona Coyotes arena drama. The league says they’re going back to The Mullett Arena for the 2023-24 season, but why? Frank says it’s not a long-term fix and the league needs to move on and Jason agreed. He also gave his thoughts on some of the rumoured landing spots should the Coyotes finally leave the desert.Frank also had some new info on General Manager openings in Calgary and Pittsburgh. He thinks they could have their new hires in place by this time next week. Jason thinks the Flame's next GM is already in their front office and explained why Craig Conroy would be a great choice to be their next GM.Tyler Yaremchuk joined the show to talk with the guys about the upcoming Conference Finals. What changes are coming in Edmonton & Toronto?
The Stanley Cup will stay south of the border for another season. Both the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs over the weekend and now, changes could be coming in both of those markets.Frank started the pod off by talking about a move that could be happening in Edmonton at the managerial level. Gregor took a look at what went wrong for the Oilers in their series against the Golden Knights. Was it a problem of depth? Were their big guns not good enough? The two debated that.In Toronto, it seems like there could be even bigger changes. General Manager Kyle Dubas and Head Coach Sheldon Keefe are on the hot seat and we could know within 48 hours whether or not they’ll be back. The guys also talked about the roster that the Leafs have and who could be moved this summer. There are also GM openings in Calgary and Pittsburgh. Frank gave an update on those two situations and talked about the move that the Philadelphia Flyers made last week.Tyler also jumped in with Fill in the Blank brought to you by Betano. He asked the guys about some other organizations that could make GM changes and some players who will be unrestricted free agents in July. Ep 217A New Era in Philly & A Playoff Update
The Stanley Cup Playoffs continue to roll along and every series is going to see a fifth game. The Toronto Maple Leafs were in danger of being swept last night but gutted out a victory in their series. The Carolina Hurricanes can be the first team to move on with a win tonight. Out west, each series is a best-of-three and with almost every game between them being a blowout, it’s hard to tell who has the edge. Frank and Jason broke down all those series but first, they talked about Keith Jones and Danny Briere being brought in to run the hockey ops department in Philly. It’s a new era for the Flyers, but will it lead to a quick turnaround or will this be a long rebuild in the City of Brotherly Love?Frank also talked about his experience being sequestered at the NHL Draft Lottery. He raved about the drama behind the scenes and also assured fans that the process is not rigged. That led to some talk about Bedard becoming a Blackhawk and what GM Kyle Davidson could do this summer to try and get the generational talent some help next season. They wrapped up the pod with some talk about Canes forward Jordan Martinook and his incredible second round. Ep 216The Draft Lottery & The Leafs 3-0 Deficit
The Stanley Cup playoffs continued to be widely unpredictable as the Seattle Kraken and Florida Panthers just can’t stop winning. Frank and Jason dug into how each of the four second-round series are looking today on the podcast but first, with the draft lottery going tonight they started things off by spinning the wheel at tankathon.com and talking about potential landing spots for Connor Bedard. Tonight will be a franchise-defining moment for one NHL team.We also got news over the weekend that the New York Rangers and Gerard Gallant have mutually decided to part ways, which Gregor said was a polite way of saying he’s been fired. Who are some potential candidates to replace him in ‘The Big Apple’? Frank gave some possibilities and Jason had a strong take on who should be the Ranger's next Head Coach. There very well could be a coaching change coming in Toronto as well. The Leafs find themselves down 3-0 to the Florida Panthers in their second-round series. What’s been the biggest problem for Toronto? Their stars have disappeared, their depth looks weak, and goaltending hasn’t been great. The list is long and there could be big changes if the Leafs get bounced. They also hit on the other series in the Eastern Conference and the two out west before getting to Tyler Yaremchuk, who had some fresh ‘Fill in the Blank’ questions ready for the guys.0:45 - Draft lottery goes tonight16:30 - Rangers move on from Gallant23:05 - Leafs down 3-038:45 - Kraken up 2-1 on Dallas42:20 - Devils vs Hurricanes44:20 - Fill in the Blank Hosted on Acast. Ep 215Playoff talk & a draft preview with Craig Button
As the Stanley Cup playoffs continued into Round 2, we picked up right where we left off. Only this time around, if a player finds the back of the net four times in one game, it might not guarantee a win for their team. It’s safe to say that the 2023 Playoffs have been full of drama and excitement thus far.Breaking down the start of Round 2, Frank and Jason started the show by reviewing the four matchups ongoing in the league. Taking a look inside the Western and Eastern Conference, the guys shared their analysis after witnessing each game one.Later on, in the show, Craig Button of the Kool Button podcast and TSN joined the show. By sharing his draft expertise, Craig was able to share how Connor Bedard compares to the other top NHL prospects in this draft year. With there being some high-profile forwards in the draft class this year, Craig gave some praise to some notable Defencemen. Craig also shared with Frank and Jason some names that may be considered a mid-round gem, as he shed light on how teams can find elite talent in the middle rounds of the NHL draft.Where is Connor Bedard going to play next season? That is one question that each lottery team looks forward to as we get closer to the Draft Lottery. To finish off, Craig shared which NHL franchise would be the ideal spot for Connor Bedard as he enters the league. 0:40 - 4 Goal Games 4:06 - Western Conference Round 2 Update11:00 - Eastern Conference Round 2 Update 24:22 - Craig Button Joins the Show 25:06 - Bedard vs Other Top Draft Prospects 28:28 - Risk Factors in Drafting 35:20 - Top Defencemen prospects41:12 - Drafting Goalies in Top Rounds 47:40 - Mid-Round Gems 56:41 - Craig’s Ideal Team for Connor Bedard Hosted on Acast. Ep 214Historic Upsets & What's Next in Boston?
What. A. First. Round. The opening series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs lived up to the hype and then some. Sunday night alone saw the team that just set the record for most wins in a regular season lose on home ice, in overtime nonetheless, and the defending Stanley Cup Champions lost to the youngest franchise in the league. How did those two teams pull of historic upsets? Frank and Jason started the show by digging into those two series and talking about what could happen over the summer for both the Bruins and Avalanche. There is still one series still going right now. The Rangers and Devils will play game seven tonight and the guys also broke that down before continuing to go through the rest of the first round results. They hit on both the Oilers and Maple Leafs moving on to round two and predicted whether or not they can go even deeper. To wrap things up, they talked about the comments made by Winnipeg Jets Head Coach Rick Bowness and the players reaction to it. Ep 213Every team is still alive & we have a new trade targets board
We are on our fifth podcast of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and every single team is still alive. Now, that could all change tonight and that’s where Jason and Frank started today on the show. The Leafs can put away the Lightning tonight in game five of their series. If they lose tonight, how much pressure shifts onto their shoulders? They debated that. The Winnipeg Jets are also trying to stay alive tonight in their series against the Golden Knights. The Jets are hurting right now with multiple key players out of the lineup, can they still pull off the improbable comeback against the Golden Knights? From there, they talked about Matt Tkachuk’s heroics last night in game five between the Bruins and Panthers. Frank says that Tkachuk is a top-five player in the NHL, but Gregor disagrees. They also talked about the other series going on right now. The Devils have won back-to-back games and now have a chance to take a 3-2 series lead over a Rangers team that is showing some serious flaws.Tyler also popped in for Fill in the Blank, where he asked the guys about Frank’s first trade targets board of the offseason. Ep 212Breaking down one week of playoff hockey
Jason and Frank are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown and with one week of playoff hockey in the books, they had plenty to break down. Pretty much every series has been producing some intriguing storylines but officiating has stood out across the board. They started today's show by talking about the impact that the referees have been having so far in the postseason and they debated whether or not the league should allow the media to speak to officials after a game. From there, they talked about the Leafs and Lightning series, which got extra spicy in game three. Does this Leaf's team look different than the team in years past? Or are they doomed for the same fate? The other two Canadian teams have had interesting weeks as well. The Jets are very much in their series against the Golden Knights, but can they overcome the loss of Josh Morrissey? The Oilers had a wild comeback victory to even up their series against the Kings, do they have what it takes to win what is now a best-of-three? Frank and Jason talked about that and went through some updated series odds courtesy of Betano.ca Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 211What's Happening in Calgary & Stanley Cup Playoff Controversies
We are through three nights in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and there is no shortage of storylines. Frank and Jason went through every series and where things stand right now, but first they dug into what’s going on in Calgary. Frank explained what happened behind the scenes and why Brad Treliving decided to move on after almost a decade in the GM chair. They then got into the big storylines from the playoffs starting with the goaltending controversy brewing down in Minnesota. After winning game one, the Wild switched up their starting goaltender and then got smoked in game two. Frank thinks this was the right decision and wondered if more teams will start looking at things the way the Wild do.That wasn’t the only controversial topic from night three. A missed call in overtime between the Hurricanes and Islanders had Isles fans up in arms. Leafs fans are also upset that Michael Bunting was given a three game suspension. Frank and Jason actually sided with Leafs fans on this one, saying that they thought the punishment was too harsh. They wrapped it up by talking about the teams that are in danger of going down 2-0 despite having home ice advantage. Which team needs a win the most? They gave their thoughts. They also brought in Tyler for a fresh edition of Buy or Sell.1:05 - What happened in Calgary?9:10 - The Wild goalie controversey15:06 - Panthers vs Bruins17:58 - Canes/Islanders26:55 - Bunting suspension34:25 - Favorites going down 2-043:00 - Buy or Sell Hosted on Acast. Ep 210Western Conference Playoff Preview
Part two of our playoff preview is up now and after going through all four Eastern Conference matchups in episode 209, Jason and Frank turned their attention to the Western Conference where there are some very, very tantalizing matchups. Before they got into that though, they did talk about a few coaching changes that were made over the last week. Both Anaheim and Columbus made changes behind the bench and now there are two openings in spots where Connor Bedard could land. That led to some lottery talk now that the odds are finalized. They finally jumped into the playoff previews, starting with the conference’s top seed, the Vegas Golden Knights, taking on the Winnipeg Jets. Can Connor Hellebuyck steal this series? Can Jack Eichel take a step forward in his first-ever playoff appearance? They debated these two questions.Moving along, they dug into the Avs vs Kraken matchup which is a series that Frank thinks has sweep potential. It’s the first taste of playoff hockey for the Kraken and that fan base will be rocking for their home games, that’s the main reason why Gregor thinks they will steal at least one game from the Avs. The Oilers and Kings will also be meeting in a rematch of their epic first-round series from last year. In their 2022 series, Connor McDavid averaged two points per game. Can the Kings slow him down? Even if they do, the Oilers depth might be good enough to power them through according to Jason. To wrap it up, they hit on the Wild and Stars, a series that might be the most evenly matched of the four. Jason and Frank outlined the keys to victory on either side of that matchup. Tyler also popped in with his picks and a new edition of Buy or Sell.0:40 - CBJ & ANA Head Coaching changes13:25 - Golden Knights vs Jets17:30 - Avalanche vs Kraken23:05 - Oilers vs Kings35:30 - Stars vs Wild Hosted on Acast. Ep 209Eastern Conference Playoff Preview
Part one of our Stanley Cup Playoff preview is here. Frank and Jason went through every series in the Eastern Conference today on the podcast. Before they got into the playoff talk though, they did hit on the sweeping changes that occurred in Pittsburgh on Friday with Ron Hextall, Brian Burke, and Chris Pryor all being fired after the franchise’s 16-year playoff streak ended. Could the Penguins be eyeing up Kyle Dubas to be their next General Manager? Frank answered that question on the show. They also quickly hit on changes that could come in Ottawa and Calgary. They then jumped into the playoff previews, starting with the top-seeded Boston Bruins, who set multiple records during the regular season. Will it be a waste of eight days for the Florida Panthers, or do they have a shot at winning this series? Frank and Jason broke down if an upset is possible. They then moved on to the series that a lot of people think could feature an upset. The Islanders got into the playoffs in the final days of the regular season and now, they’re facing a Hurricanes team that hasn’t been playing their best hockey down the stretch. Jason thinks an upset can happen but Frank isn’t taking the bait. They also hit on the rematch between the Maple Leafs and Lightning, and whether or not the Leafs can exercise their demons and finally move on. The Bolts are hurting right now, but can they flip the switch for the playoffs. They wrapped it up with the ‘Battle of the Hudson River’ between the Rangers and the Devils. Ep 208Playoff Races & the Karlsson Norris argument
The final week of the regular season is here and there is still a lot left undecided. Frank and Jason did eventually get into the playoff races, but they started off by talking about who’s in the driver seat in the race for Connor Bedard. Coming in last only gives a team a roughly 25% chance of landing the first overall pick, but there are a lot of fan bases hoping their favorite teams lose out this week and increase their chances of landing the Regina Pats forward.Last night, the Boston Bruins set the record for most wins in a season. Frank thinks this record has an asterisk next to it and explained why. Jason fought back a little bit on that. They also butted heads during their awards talk, specifically around San Jose Shark’s defenceman Erik Karlsson and his Norris Trophy chances. Things got heated as they debated how much voters should value points in the race. They then got into the playoff races for each conference. Pittsburgh and Calgary are both in big trouble, do either have a chance? Frank and Jason debated that before getting into some of the seeding races. There is only one series that’s already determined, so there is a lot to play for in the next five days.Tyler Yaremchuk then jumped on for Buy or Sell, which started off with a very cheesy debate. They then got into some of the spicy quotes we got this weekend from Bo Horvat and Chris Wideman. Ep 207The playoff races, injury problems & breakout players
Jason and Frank are back with episode 207 of The DFO Rundown, brought to you by Betano.ca. To start things off today, Frank outlined a new piece he’s working on for the site that goes into the total amount that teams spend on players. The salary cap was supposed to mean that all teams spend the same on players, but that’s not the case. Frank told us who the biggest spenders are around the league and Jason gave his take on how that correlates to winning. Injuries are a big story right now around the league with both the Avalanche and Lightning, last year’s Stanley Cup Finalists, dealing with a barrage of injuries. Cale Makar, Tanner Jeannot, and others could be missing as those two teams prepare for their first-round series. Frank and Jason broke down all those situations and talked about the Bolt’s first-round matchup against the Maple Leafs, which is now locked in.They also hit on the Eastern Conference playoff race today on the show. The Penguins are limping to the finish line while the Panthers continue their red-hot play. Who’s going to get it? They gave their thoughts on that and also talked about some higher seeds that could be vulnerable in the first round.Tyler also stopped by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked them1:00 - Complete spending report10:10 - Avs injuries19:40 - Eastern playoff race22:50 - Lightning injuries30:55 - Western playoff race44:00 - State of the Flames47:20 - Fill in the Blank Hosted on Acast. Ep 206Coaches on the hot seat & summer trade ideas
There are just two weeks to go in the regular season and things are still largely undecided in both conferences. Frank and Jason dug into things today on the pod but before that, they had an impromptu discussion about the state of the NHL. They talked about new NHLPA Head Marty Walsh and his potential impact, how the league’s growth has been stunted, and where they need to improve on things. That led to Tyler telling a story about Frank and Jason’s reputation with the kids on TikTok.They also talked about the fact that offence is up again this season and whether or not this trend is sustainable. Jason has some numbers that point to this change not being an anomaly. With some teams gearing up for the playoffs, others are getting ready for busy summers and for some teams, coaching changes could be coming. Frank gave his list of coaches that could be on the hot seat and talked about how many jobs could open up this month alone. They also each gave some trade ideas that they believe could come to fruition this summer. They each had one for a Canadian team and they were spicy. Ep 205The Western Conference is tightening up!
There just a few weeks left in the regular season and the races are really starting to heat up. The Flames and Predators are still alive thanks to the slumping Winnipeg Jets. Can the Preds really slip into the playoffs after selling off at the deadline? Jason and Frank talked about that today on the pod.Want to know how much pressure the Panthers are under? Just go watch how their Head Coach Paul Maurice acted on the team’s bench last night. They guys started the pod by joking a little about what makes them lose their minds like Maurice. It also led to a conversation about whether or not the NHL is protecting their officials too much right now. Frank thinks the league is getting a little bit soft when it comes to how they coddle their referees. They also broke down Frank’s Top 50 Unrestricted Free Agents list starting at the top with Maple Leafs winger Michael Bunting. Frank got ratio’d on Twitter for putting him there, but he explained why it made sense. Gregor compared him to another former Leaf that left in free agency and found success in his new home: Zach Hyman. They also hit of Tyler Bertuzzi, Vlad Gavrikov, and John Klingberg. They wrapped things up by ranking the teams in each conference and Tyler Yaremchuk stopped by for a little Buy or Sell brought to you by Pointsbet Canada.0:40 - Maurice & the Panthers4:30 - Western playoff race21:40 - Upcoming UFA class31:50 - The Wild stay hot36:00 - Pacific seeding battle49:50 - Buy or Sell Hosted on Acast. Ep 204Who's peaking at the right time?
It was a hectic weekend around the NHL with both conference's playoff races still not over yet. The Florida Panthers, Calgary Flames, and Nashville Predators are all on the outside looking in and haven’t exactly taken the bull by the horns over the last seven days. On the other hand, the Winnipeg Jets and Pittsburgh Penguins could have put those teams right out of it with a solid hot streak and neither of those teams has been able to do that. That means the final few weeks of the regular season should be very interesting. Frank and Jason talked about that today on the pod. Before that though, they recapped Frank’s week off and his trip to Disney World. He’s been a handful of times this year and talked about his disdain for the whole experience. Jason has never been and is planning on taking his boy, but Frank gave him some insight into how things work and kind of scared him off of the idea. They also talked about the playoff format, the LA Kings heading into the playoffs, and Auston Matthews tremendous weekend. The talk for a lot of teams right now is about peaking at the right time and playing their best hockey as they head into the playoffs and both the Kings and Leafs have been hitting their stride. Tyler Yaremchuk also got the guys to guess some price tags on players eligible for extensions this summer.8:15 - NHL playoff races12:00 - Lottery talk19:05 - Matthew’s finding form23:30 - Playoff format30:15 - Kings heading into the playoffs38:05 - Fill in the Blank for Pointsbet Canada Hosted on Acast. Ep 203A crawl to the finish line in the West
It was a wild weekend around the NHL as playoff races continue to heat up. We had multiple 7+ goal outputs from different teams around the league and some of the teams that were victims of those offensive explosions were teams that were in the mix. Frank and Jason opened up the show by talking about the sliding Penguins, who are just barely hanging on in the Eastern Conference with the Florida Panthers lurking. Will they hold on?If they miss, could Ron Hextall pay the price with his job? It could happen and Frank also talked about an interesting story out of Toronto that ties into a possible GM change in Pittsburgh. From there, they went out West where it seems like nobody wants to grab a hold of the playoff race. The Jets, Predators, and Flames all continue to play very average hockey and it’s led to the wild card race staying wide open. They also hit on McDavid’s race to 150 points before bringing in Tyler for a new edition of Fill in the Blank brought to you by Pointsbet Canada where he asked the guys about the upcoming free agent class in the NHL.0:40 - Penguins slide6:08 - Dubas to Pittsburgh?10:50 - Western playoff race16:30 - McDavid a lock for 150?30:20 - Fill in the Blank Hosted on Acast. Ep 202Binnington's act, fighting in hockey & frying pans
Jason and Frank are back with another episode of The DFO Rundown and they kicked things off with some fireworks as they talked about the Jordan Binnington vs Marc-Andre Fleury “non-fight”. Frank says this was just another example of Binnington’s fake tough guy act. Gregor wanted to see the linesmen let them go at it.That spilled into a conversation about the state of fighting in the sport. They talked about some talks that happened at the GM meetings about this topic and how some in the sport want to see an end to fights after clean hits. The QMJHL is also becoming the first major junior league in Canada to outlaw fighting completely. The NHL has two 100-point scorers already this year, and they’re both on the same team. The guys talked about Draisaitl’s remarkably productive season, if he’d be able to do it without 97, and where he ranks all-time amongst European centremen. Is he going to be the best ever? They also talked about McDavid’s remarkable season, which led to some talk about Connor Bedard and who’s doing the best tank job right now in the NHL.Tyler hopped in with some Buy or Sell questions which started with one about McDavid’s historic season. He also asked them about which second seed has the best chance to catch their respective division leader. He wrapped it up with some talk about a very unique way that Gregor uses a frying pan.4:30 - Binnington vs Fleury9:00 - Fighting in the game30:15 - McDavid & Draisaitl36:30 - Draft lottery talk39:15 - Buy or Sell48:24 - Svechnikov injury Hosted on Acast. Ep 201The GM Meetings & What's Next in Philly?
Frank and Jason are back for another Monday edition of the pod. There was some major news late last week with the Flyers moving on from General Manager Chuck Fletcher. They broke down what led to this firing, where the Flyers go from here, and Frank gave some insight into Danny Briere’s chances of being named the full-time General Manager. They also talked about what’s expected to be tabled at this week’s GM meetings down in Florida. From the salary cap to fighting, there will be some pretty big topics on the table as all 32 GM‘s meet up for one of their annual meetings. We are over a week removed from the NHL trade deadline as well, which means we have a pretty good sample size for some players on their new teams. Jason brought up two players in particular who are off to surprisingly strong starts with their new clubs and one of them could have a big impact on how the playoffs go in the Western Conference. They also dug into the playoff races and declared a few more teams as dead. Tyler also popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank delivered by Pointsbet Canada.1:05 - GM Meetings topics14:02 - Flyers GM search26:50 - Deadline adds34:30 - Playoff race update42:00 - Fill in the Blank Hosted on Acast. Ep 200The Playoff Race Is On & Mission 200
The conversation on the pod has shifted fully from trade talk to discussion about the playoff races and suddenly, there are playoff races in each conference. Last year, there was something to watch down the stretch in the Western Conference but no race at all in the East. This year, there are two teams in the West and a handful in the East who still have a legitimate shot at taking one of the final two wild card spots. Jason and Frank started off the pod by talking about which teams they like to keep things close in the final month of the season and which teams could slip out. After giving their thoughts on teams that have a lot to play for down the stretch, they talked about teams that have their focus solely on the first-overall pick and Connor Bedard. They dug into which teams would be the best and worst fits from both a league perspective and a hockey perspective.Tyler also popped in for ‘Buy or Sell’ brought to you by Pointsbet Canada. Ep 199The Trade Deadline Recap Show
With the trade deadline in the rearview mirror, Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli sat down for a full breakdown of what happened over the last week in the NHL. They talked about which teams they feel made themselves better, which General Managers might be kicking themselves for not doing enough, and also which ones maybe went a little bit too crazy with their deadline spending. As expected, there was a lot of talk about which teams did the best job of loading up but Frank and Jason also took some time to talk about which organization did the best job of selling off at the deadline. The Blues and Predators both made some tough decisions, but they could end up being big winners down the line. They also talked about the Senators' playoff chances, the Sabres’ trade deadline moves, the Carolina Hurricanes' lack of activity, and some of the teams that stayed quiet.Tyler Yaremchuk also joined the guys for a new edition of Fill in the Blank brought to you by Pointsbet Canada. He asked the guys about the Calgary Flames' plummeting playoff chances and more.Episode 199 of The DFO Rundown is brought to you by Athletic Brewing Co. Ep 198A Pre-Deadline Look Around The League
Is this a deadline preview show? Or a deadline wrap up show?We are still more than 24 hours away from the NHL trade deadline and most of the names at the top of Frank Seravalli’s Trade Targets board have evaporated. Chychrun, Kane, Ekholm, Gavrikov, Granlund, and more have all been traded since we recorded our last episode. To break down all the activity we’ve seen over the last 48-72 hours, Frank and Jason went division by division to go through every team around the league. They started with the Bruins, who made two major moves today with the Pastrnak extension and the Tyler Bertuzzi trade, and then got to the rest of the Atlantic. The West has not been as active, but some teams have made big moves. In the Central, the Avs have nibbled around the edges of the trade market and everyone is watching to see if the Dallas Stars will make a big splash. They then went back to the Eastern Conference and looked at the Metropolitan division where the Rangers have loaded up but the Canes have been quieter than expected. Back in the West, the Oilers and Kings have both made major adds. They finished up the show by talking about what else could go down in that division including a fascinating situation in Calgary where GM Brad Treliving is in a tough spot.Episode 198 of The DFO Rundown is brought to you by Athletic Brewing Co. We got a couple of big moves this weekend in the NHL as things continue to heat up ahead of trade deadline. Timo Meier is off to the New Jersey Devils, Tanner Jeannot is now a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Vegas Golden Knights sacrificed a top prospect for Ivan Barbashev. Frank and Jason broke down all the news that we got over the last 48 hours.Teams are making their moves early but there is still plenty that could happen over the next five days. The guys also gave their thoughts on some moves that haven’t happened yet. The Rangers appear to be a lock to get Patrick Kane, the Predators are open to moving Mattias Ekholm, and the Flyers have made it known that Kevin Hayes is available. There is a lot going on behind the scenes and Frank gave us the latest.Tyler Yaremchuk also popped in for Buy or Sell brought to you by Pointsbet Canada. Ep 196New Names On The Trade Block
Things are happening around the NHL. We had two trades yesterday and there will surely be more this weekend. We are basically one week from the trade deadline and there are still plenty of teams that want to get something done before then.Frank put out his newest trade targets list and today on the pod, he broke down all the new names that have popped up on the trade market. Dmitry Orlov, Joel Farabee, and Tanner Jeannot are all players that could be moved. Frank and Jason also talked about the possibility of the Vancouver Canucks moving on from JT Miller less than a year after signing him to a massive extension. They also talked about a pair of Eastern Conference powerhouses in Boston and Carolina and what they could do ahead of the deadline. Those two teams have been dominant almost all season long and could be looking to bolster their roster ahead of the deadline. Another team that’s heating up in the East is the New York Rangers and now there’s word that they could be interested in adding Patrick Kane just weeks after getting Vladimir Tarasenko. Frank gave us the latest on the Kane situation.Tyler Yaremchuk also got the guys thoughts on the Golden Knights, Senators and some under-the-radar candidates that could be on the move ahead of the deadline.Episode 195 of The DFO Rundown is brought to you by Athletic Brewing Co. Ep 195The Leafs Make Their Big Splash
What a weekend in the NHL! We got a big trade, some other substantial news off the ice, and it was a topsy-turvy week in the standings as well. To begin today’s podcast, Jason and Frank took a look at the Ryan O’Reilly trade that we saw on Saturday night. Kyle Dubas and company pushed their chips into the middle byu moving four draft picks, but are O’Reilly and Noel Acciari enough to push them past the first round? Frank also talked about why he has a problem with where the bar is being set in Toronto. From there, they talked about the news that Jonathan Toews is going to be staying in Chicago this season as he continues to battle an illness. The Hawks won’t be able to get anything for their Captain, but Patrick Kane may have upped his trade value with a Sunday night hat-trick against the Maple Leafs. Jason also wondered about the potential availability of Max Domi. They also looked into some teams that are going to be facing tough decisions. The New York Islanders haven’t been the dominant force some thought they’d be after acquiring Bo Horvat. The Washington Capitals are slipping and how a lot of pieces they could sell off. The Pittsburgh Penguins have games in hand on a lot of teams, but they are far from a lock to make the playoffs. It’s going to be a wild finish in the East.Tyler Yaremchuk also stopped by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about the Tampa Bay Lightning, Edmonton Oilers, and St. Louis Blues.Episode 195 of The DFO Rundown is brought to you by Athletic Brewing Co. We are now just over two weeks away from the NHL trade deadline and with plenty of news potentially coming, we decided to drop today’s episode of the podcast a day earlier than usual. To start today, Frank and Jason talked about the two big names in Chicago: Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. The market is changing for these players with Toews out of the lineup due to an illness and Kane having full control of his destination. Frank explained why Toews has plummeted down his trade bait board. From there, Jason gave his thoughts on some of the new names that Frank has put forward on his board including Carson Soucy out of Seattle. They also batted around potential deadline strategies for teams like the Canucks, Oilers, and Hurricanes.Tyler Yaremchuk stopped by for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by Montanas. He had some takes on the New York Rangers, Nashville Predators, the Pacific Division ahead of the deadline, and Connor McDavid’s potentially historic season.
