In this Formation episode of The Unseen Curriculum, I sit down with Johan Weemaes and Greg Fine to unpack one of the most important tensions in early career dentistry: How do you progress rapidly… without becoming reckless? We discuss: What young dentists misunderstand about their early years Why confidence follows structure, not the other way around The difference between exposure and readiness What makes someone truly coachable How to hold high standards without turning them into self-punishment Why restraint is part of excellence This conversation isn’t about implants or complexity. It’s about formation; the invisible shaping that happens before mastery becomes visible. The Unseen Curriculum #6 – the cost of becoming a dentist with Dr Michael Shambira
If you are doing everything right on paper but still feel unsettled or unsure of yourself, this episode is for you. We dive deep into the “hidden curriculum” of dentistry—the gap between your clinical skills and the heavy emotional weight of new responsibility. We explore why most of your doubt isn’t a lack of skill but a system calibration issue, and break down the three essential phases of career growth: Formation, Integration, and Excellence. In this episode, we unpack the critical difference between a situation being “unsafe” versus simply “unfamiliar” and how confusing the two leads to unnecessary burnout. You will learn practical strategies to stop over analyzing your day, shift your focus from tracking outcomes to tracking learning, and how to reframe mistakes as data rather than character flaws. Whether you are a student or a new grad, this is your permission to be early in your journey. Some key takeaways… Stop grading yourself daily; it amplifies noise rather than providing insight. Distinguish between what is ‘unsafe’ and what is merely ‘unfamiliar’ to reduce anxiety. Track your learning progress rather than just your clinical outcomes. View mistakes as information and data, not as a verdict on your identity. Understand the three career phases: Formation, Integration, and Excellence Allow your internal systems time to catch up to your new responsibilities. Feature #99 – Mastering General Dentistry: From mistakes to mentorship with Dr Julian Dantes
Hosted by Dr David Keir Dr. Julian Dantes joins Dr. David to discuss the honest journey from a rural “sink or swim” graduateto a successful practice owner on the Sunshine Coast. Unlike the curated perfection often seen onsocial media, Julian shares the raw reality of general dentistry, including his pivot from medicineand the irony of failing a university “people skills” test despite being a people-focused clinician. In this candid conversation, you will learn about the dangers of early confidence in implant dentistryand the specific steps Julian took to recover from clinical mistakes, including the power ofphotography. Julian reveals how a rare finger tumor forced him to rethink his work-life balance, moving from six clinical days a week to three. He also breaks down his structured mentorshipmodel for new graduates and explains why mastering the basics, like isolation and simple fillings, isthe true foundation for complex aesthetic work. Some key takeaways from this episode: Clinical photography is one of the most effective tools for self-reflection and improving clinicaloutcomes. Don’t rush into complex dentistry; mastering the basics like isolation and non-sensitive fillings iscrucial for long-term success. Live surgery courses can provide false confidence—ensure you have the theoretical knowledgebefore attempting complex cases. Mentorship should be structured: consider a “watch me, I watch you” approach beforeunleashing a new grad. Most played episode series #2 – Airway, Snoring and Sleep Apnoea with Dr David McIntosh
Imagine walking into your child’s room to find a stranger choking your child. Fear, panic and an immediate response would be instant, of course with a heroic end and a safe child. However, it is common to let our children snore, effectively choking, each night without investigation or treatment. As dentists we are the gateway to the mouth. We see our patients regularly, we monitor their development and we should know the signs of sleep disordered breathing. And when we do, we can make a change in our patients lives. This episode we have the absolute pleasure of speaking with Dr David McIntosh. David is a paediatric ENT with a special interest in airway, snoring and sleep apnoea. David is a published author on this topic with an excellent book called Snored to Death – I recommend everyone reads this. David runs multiple facebook pages in an attempt to educate and change the old ways of letting our children struggle to breath at night. This was a monster episode with a ton of information. David was particularly generous with his time and this stretches close to 2hrs! Perhaps digest this one in a few different sittings but i have absolutely no doubt you’ll be engaged and take away a ton of Information. We chat in depth about Is it ok for a child to snore? How David became an ENT with a special interest in paediatric airway What do dentist need to know about airway to pick this stuff up The deal with tonsillitis and the magic number Of the cases he sees where tonsillectomy is indicated, 80-90% have not ever had tonsillitis Size is a big part but not the whole story Diagnosing in children – the facts Assesssment of tonsils and their grades How you can approach the airway and tonsil discussion with parents What is the referral pathway once the issue is identified. Not all ENTs are created equal, some have special interests in the ear, others in the airway etc. Do your research to ensure the pt gets appropriate care Should adults snore? Tongue tie, a great framework to help you think about and advise on tongue tie. Physical tongue tie and a functional tongue tie A few questions from our Instagram page and Facebook Group Links David’s fantastic book on sleep disordered breathing http://www.fb.me/snoredtodeath https://www.facebook.com/entspecialistsaustralia https://www.facebook.com/ENTforDentists/ https://www.facebook.com/TonguetieOz/ https://www.facebook.com/drdavidmcintosh/ The book i mention – “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker Thank you to our sponsors… Dental Protection Limited Dental Protection have proudly been supporting the Dental Head Start podcast since day one! Tip #148 – Imaging: AI Revolutionizing Diagnosis and Image Recognition with Dr. Martin Gale
Hosted by @dr.haydynbathurst Hello everyone and welcome again to “What I wish I knew”, the dental headstart series where we give you little tips and tricks to help you get ahead in dentistry. In this episode today I am talking with specialist endodontist Dr Martin Gale. As new general dentists, patients come to us with often complex problems, and we are sometimes under a lot of stress to find the correct diagnosis. If we can’t figure it out, and particularly if the patient is in pain, then referral to our local endodontist is the next step. We just hope that they can make that correct diagnosis and solve the problem. But what if we have not made the right decision to refer, and in fact our patient does not need to see an endodontist. This may waste the patient’s and the endodontist’s time. Or perhaps of more concern, we decide not to refer a patient, and they then don’t get their disease treated! Is there any way we can get some help to make the right decision, ondeciding the diagnosis, and on whether to refer a patient? I had the pleasure of seeing one of Dr Martin Gale’s lectures on dental artificial intelligence last year, and it seems that AI might be a possible help for making thosedifficult diagnostic decisions. We’ve discussed AI on the podcast before but this technology is rapidly changing, so it’s due for another episode. And Dr Gale is the man when it comes to implementation of AI into dentistry, in particular into endodontics. He has been researching dental AI since 2005 and has developed a working app for endodontic diagnosis since 2017. In this first episode, he’ll take us through the development of AI and its practical uses in dentistry, including in endodontics. In the second episode (coming soon) we will explore the responsibility dentists have in implementing this powerful technology, and raise awareness about how AI may disrupt the dental industry in the coming decades. I think you’ll enjoy it! Key moments 0:04:31 First medical AI software developed in 1972 0:08:14 Explanation of convolutional neural networks (CNN) 0:11:14 Introduction of transformers by Google in 2017 0:15:36 Discussion on image recognition in dental radiographs 0:21:31 Dr. Martin Gale’s personal research on endodontic AI diagnosis 0:26:51 Reveal of his neural network’s 94-95% accuracy rate 0:29:35 Importance of accurate data collection in diagnostics 0:34:58 Explanation of AI’s real market (large organizations, insurers) vs individual dentists These timestamps highlight the progression of the discussion from AI’s history to its specific applications in dentistry. Dental Mentoring Series #3 – Why is it so expensive? Handling objections
Hosted by Dr David Keir Everyone’s talking about it. Everybody wants a mentor. That’s what they’re looking for when they graduate. Who’s your mentor, and are you putting the effort in? This is the dental mentoring sessions podcast by dental Head Start, real world mentoring every fortnight. I’m Dr David Keir, a practice owner, mentor and someone who’s been exactly where you are. The goal of this podcast is to share real world lessons I’ve learned and discussions I’ve had while mentoring my team, but why keep that behind closed doors? We want to help dental students and graduates become great dentists. So we’re turning what we do week in week out into a fortnightly podcast for you all to benefit from. But I don’t claim to know it all. Everything I share comes from years of absorbing information, making mistakes and being mentored by some of the best in the field, and I’ll try to reference those great mentors along the way. If you’re a young dentist wanting to grow and you’re putting the work in, then this is for you. In this episode of the Dental Mentoring Series, I chat about the tricky topic of dental costs and how to talk about them with patients. I share why it’s so important to really understand your own pricing and how to explain it clearly—especially when patients push back or say, “That’s too expensive!” I also walk through a four-step approach I use to handle those kinds of conversations: acknowledge their concern, explain the why, offer some options, and give them the space to decide without any pressure. It’s all about building trust and understanding what’s really behind the objections. Dental Mentoring Series #2 – Mastering Local Anaesthesia: Patient Comfort and Technique
In this episode of the Dental Mentoring Series, we dive deep into one of the most critical yet often overlooked aspects of dental treatment: local anaesthesia. As dentists, we know our technical skills matter, but patients primarily remember how we made them feel. I’ll share practical techniques to make local anaesthesia more comfortable, discuss strategies for managing patient anxiety, and provide insights that can transform your approach to this fundamental dental procedure. Discoveries in Dental Focus #2 – Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) for Endodontic procedures
Welcome to the Discoveries in Dental focus series. This series highlights recent dental discoveries and saves you time having to read through numerous journal articles. Hosted by @dr.haydynbathurst In this episode I discuss the use of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), a calcium silicate-based cement used in endodontic procedures such as pulp capping and preventing pulpal exposure, even in cases of irreversible pulpitis. However, there are potential contradictions in using MTA, such as the need for an aseptic environment and the potential for pulp exposure, which may negate its effectiveness.
