Discoveries in Dental Focus #1 – Digital Dentures
Welcome to the Discoveries in Dental focus series. This series highlights recent dental discoveries and saves you time having to read through numerous journal articles. Hosted by Dr Haydyn Bathurst In this pilot episode, we are going to be exploring the concept of digital dentures, 3d printed dentures, and, by extension, CADCAM dentures. So the theory goes that because we now have the technology of scanners, CADCAM machines, and 3d printers. We can just get the dentures straight away without most of the conventional means. From what I hear most digital denture users, and in particular the manufacturers, claim that most of the time they don’t even need a trying appointment because the first denture is already fit so well, they tend to look pretty okay too. But is this true? What are the pitfalls of digital dentures? Do they really look as good as the conventional dentures, and are they going to fit as well? Note: I am not the authority on what evidence is correct and what’s not. There’s plenty of professors who will take that job for me, there may be better evidence for what counteracts what I say today, and if there isn’t already now, there very well may likely be in, you know, five years time, one year’s time or next week. TIP #139 – The strongest bond in dentistry: Dental assistant and Dentist with Rochelle Fisher
Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Christina Potestas In this episode, I sit down with Rochelle Fisher, the founder of Dental Assisting and Beyond. Rochelle has over 27 years of experience as a dental assistant in the UK and Australia. Now, she dedicates her expertise to empowering dentists and their assistants, focusing on building well-trained, confident, and happy teams within their practices. Unlike the UK, Australia doesn’t require formal qualifications for dental assistants to do their job. This can lead to situations where assistants lack proper training and struggle to effectively support dentists. Rochelle tackles this gap through her one of her renowned “101 Implant Fundamentals” course, which equips dental teams with the skills needed to align with ADA guidelines during implant and surgical procedures. Our conversation dives into Rochelle’s career journey, the qualities that define a great dental assistant, potential challenges that can arise when working with assistants, and valuable advice for newly graduated dentists. As someone who has also assisted for a long time, I deeply enjoyed connecting with Rochelle on the intricacies of this profession. I would be oh so lucky working alongside someone like her! Key moments 00:00 – Introduction and background on Rochelle Fisher’s experience as a dental assistant. 0:02:18 – Rochelle describes her career journey from school into dental assisting. 08:29 – Qualities of a great dental assistant are discussed. 12:47 – How dental assistants can support dentists and improve treatment outcomes. 18:29 – Communication and preparation between dentists and assistants is emphasized. 23:03 – Advice is given on addressing issues if the dentist-assistant relationship is not working. 28:00 – Differences between quality of dental assistants in public vs private settings are explored. 36:49 – Tips are provided for dealing with temp nurses and keeping appointments smooth. 43:31 – Rochelle discusses her current educational work and programs for dental professionals. Rochelle Fisher Rochelle began her career in dental assisting 27 years ago after studying at the Leeds Dental Institute in the UK. Since then, she has gained extensive experience working with dentists, consultants, and professors across the globe, from practices in the UK to Australia. Rochelle has primarily specialized in dental surgical assisting throughout her professional journey. She has coordinated treatment and clinical practices for renowned figures like Larry Benge and Professor Weisenfeld, accumulating significant hands-on experience. Through her work, Rochelle has gained a deep understanding of what makes a dental practice profitable, compliant, safe for both patients and staff, and ultimately stress-free. Two years ago, Rochelle established her own training company, Dental Assisting and Beyond. This venture aims to support and educate dental practices in Australia on surgical and implant set-up protocols and techniques. She strongly believes in the “whole team approach,” emphasizing thorough training for all staff members. Rochelle is passionate about education, training, and best practices within the dental field. Her greatest satisfaction comes from hearing how her training has positively impacted practices, leading to decreased staff turnover, increased client satisfaction, improved morale, and smooth-running implant procedures, showcasing the power of comprehensive, team-oriented training. Furthermore, Rochelle is a qualified yoga practitioner and offers wellness programs specifically designed for dental professionals. Recognizing the significant stress dental work can place on the body and mind, potentially leading to burnout, poor mental health, and workplace injuries, Rochelle provides workshops and courses to help dental staff manage stress, combat physical strain, and maintain good mental health throughout their careers. Rochelle’s dedication lies in collaborating with dental practices to ensure all staff feel well-trained, confident, valued, and happy in their work environment. Hosted by Dr David Keir David and Tiffany sit down and uncover their similar experiences in their journeys to becoming the dentists they are today. Tiffany moved from New Zealand to pursue dental school in Australia and took a liking to the relaxed atmosphere that regional life gave just after graduating. After working for a few years, she took off on a hiking adventure in Nepal then learnt Spanish while travelling Central and South America. Tiffany shares the incredible experience and growth that travelling has given her and reminds listeners to not expect such opportunities to just land in your lap. Tiffany is about to finish her Perio postgraduate and talks about how she coped with the demands of clinicals and school all while becoming a new mother. Incredible huh? As if that wasn’t enough, Tiffany has recently created The Cusp Collective, a conference with a goal to inspire and empower women, reignite their curiosity and desire to learn, and create a community where women can openly discuss challenges and successes without judgement. TIP #136 – Seeing Your First Patient with Dr Nicole Contemplacion & Laura Righetto (OHT)
Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Christina Potestas I wanted to dedicate this episode to all my peers and of course all dental students who will be reaching what I believe to be one of the biggest milestones of dental school and that is seeing your very first patient. In first year, It was something I always thought about, although an exciting thought it didn’t come without doubt in myself. I sat down with 2 very special people who I actually went to High school with, and who are now established dental clinicians practicing privately in Sydney. I remember them being such great, friendly personalities during highschool that I feel comfortable to turn to these two to ease my nerves of seeing my first patient and am delighted to share the chat we had with you all. You listening may be a 2nd year ready to see your very first patient, or maybe you’re someone who knows someone who is about to endeavour on this part of their journey, Or you may just be curious about what these 2 have to say. Whoever you are, I hope you enjoy listening to the chat just as much as I did having it. Dr Nicole Contemplacion Nicole graduated from Charles Sturt University with her dental degree and has gained 4 years of experience in private metropolitan and not-for-profit regional clinics. She’s a respected clinician in the Orange Aboriginal Medical Service, formerly flying once a week every month from Sydney to Orange to provide dental services to her patients there. Nicole faced her first year out of uni in the grips of Covid lockdown, providing emergency care but was also allowed to utilise her clinical skills by delivering Covid vaccinations. She managed to continue growing confidence beyond graduation despite being slowed by the pandemic and now practices privately in Sydney with the goal of building her scope. Laura Righetto Laura completed her bachelor of OHT at USYD and has been a respected clinician for the last 10 years formerly working in the public sector for the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health district and in a prestigious all on 4 implant and general dental surgery in Sydney. Laura is passionate about dental hygiene as well as airways and breathing and built solid experience in managing cases alongside Paediatric and ENT specialists. She hopes to continue her journey into tertiary education. The post TIP #136 – Seeing Your First Patient with Dr Nicole Contemplacion & Laura Righetto (OHT) appeared first on Dental Head Start.

They also talk about how they joined the Dental Head Start team and what they hope to achieve as new co-hosts. From Hieu and Christina: “We are very privileged to be part of this community and look forward to supporting the Dental Head Start cause. A huge thank you to David and his team for such an amazing opportunity.” *the flashcard software Christina refers to is called Quizlet Hieu Dong Hieu is a final-year dental student at the University of Sydney. Originating from the city of Perth, Hieu’s path in dentistry began with his undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne, completing a Bachelor of Biomedicine. FEATURE #86 – CEREC To Success & The Patient Experience with Dr Lingaiah Dronavalli
As a new grad, it’s almost the norm rather than the exception nowadays to have at least some form of digital dentistry within one’s practice. But it wasn’t always this way, and for many more seasoned dentists, the world of digital dentistry was something they had to slowly piece together over the years and learn to leverage. In this months’ feature, we explore Dr Lingaiah Dronavalli’s journey in dentistry from his early years as a new grad with huge expectations but without the tools, resources and mindset to grow and how that overall affected his feeling of fulfillment, to where he is today – a self proclaimed dental peacock who takes pride in his work! We talk about Dr Lingaiah’s discovery of digital dentistry and CEREC specifically, and how that’s not only shaped his growth as a clinician, but also how it’s taught him to leverage technology to maximise efficiencies and workflows within his practice and ultimately optimise the entire patient experience. We explore the concept of practice ownership and associateship and the importance of building mutually supportive environments within the practice. Dr Lingaiah Dronavalli Dr Lingaiah Dronavalli graduated from Griffith University in 2010 and now owns two of his own dental practices. He is all too familiar with the feeling of feeling inadequate, having lofty expectations for his career as a young dentist, and letting that fear of failure and lack of follow through stunt his growth. The biggest change in his career came from a shift in mindset and his discovery of digital dentistry. Dr Lingaiah’s journey with CEREC has helped him grow immensely as a clinician over the years and brought back the passion that was missing in his career. He now loves being able to spread his passion with fellow colleagues by discussing cases and sharing clinical tips via his Facebook group ‘CEREC for Success’, as well as through running regular courses to help clinicians learn to leverage technology in their practices, both for themselves and their patients. Mental Wellbeing Focus #4 – Identity & Self Worth in Dentistry with Dr Viet Le and Dr Chiraag Devani
Welcome to the Mental Wellbeing Series by Dental Head Start. Join us across a limited series of episodes as we delve into the world of mental health and explore strategies and tips to improve our overall well-being. Hosted by Dr Kaejenn Tchia In today’s episode I chat with Dr Viet Le and Dr Chiraag Devani on an important mental health topic of Identity and Self Worth in Dentistry. Learn the importance of how your self worth correlates to your clinical confidence in your dental career and the MASK framework can help you better show up more authentically as a dentist you truly wish to be. We also vulnerably share some of our own challenges in our careers thus far to help normalise the struggles you may encounter in your career and how to navigate them. Dr Viet Le and Dr Chiraag Devani Both Viet and Chiraag graduated together from UQ in 2005 and between them have worked at practices on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast and everything in between, with Chiraag also spending time in Melbourne. While they have spent many years together, even working at the same practice for the past 11 years, they have taken different paths in their careers. Viet has been working continuously since graduation and ended up being partner at their current practice, The Dental Project, while Chiraag has taken many extended breaks between jobs to travel and explore the world and enjoys the freedom of being an associate. With regards to their mental health journey, they started in similar circumstances but took different approaches to finding the answers to their struggles. It lead them apart, with Chiraag taking an 18mth break to travel and Viet working on himself and his practice, but upon coming together they found commonality. And with seeing a growing trend of struggle amongst clinicians like themselves, they created Being Together in order to share what they have learnt in order to help individuals deal with the stress in dentistry, while also creating psychologically safer dental practices and teams. http://www.being2gether.com.au/ Instagram: @beingtogether_ OrthoEd Exclusive Discount for DHS Listeners If you want to learn from these exceptional courses and teachers, sign up with the following codes to get 10% off their ENTIRE RANGE of courses! FEATURE #83 – The Reality of Dentistry Post-Graduation with Dr Cathleen Dong
Hosted by Dr Erica Hwin There is so much stress and anxiety that comes with graduating and entering the real world of dentistry, and it’s so easy to get swept up in it all. As new grads, at some point in our first few years there will be a moment where we hit a bit of a wall, when the magic and glamour starts to fade, and we’re left to wonder, “Is this it? Is this what I want to be doing? Is this all there is?” Are you in love with dentistry? I’m not sure if it’s a conversation we often talk about, but I’m sure it’s something we all think of. After sustaining a back injury that left her unable to work for four months, Dr Cathleen Dong was forced to reflect on her dental journey – what she enjoyed, what she didn’t, what was rewarding and what she wanted to change or pursue. In this episode, we dive into her story. We talk about exploration, about dabbling in different avenues to find out what it is that we enjoy and thrive in, and we dissect the whole concept of finding fulfilment in what we do. Dr Cathleen Dong Dr Cathleen Dong graduated from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Dental Science in 2016. During university, she was actively involved in dental student committees on both a local and national level. Cathleen enjoys being a part of ADA NSW and is a Board Director, Councillor and the current Chair of the Recent Graduates Committee as well as the Education and Research Committee. She is passionate about providing resources and consistently improving membership value for recent graduates in addition to championing the importance of career sustainability in the profession. Cathleen also works as a Clinical Educator tutoring final year Charles Sturt University dental students. Having started her career in the public sector, Cathleen currently works in private practice on the Central Coast. Outside of dentistry, she co-founded JOGOWEAR – a medical apparel brand specialising in streamlined, functional and innovative scrubs. TIP #123 – The Pigmented Lesion with Dr Michelle Kang
Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Haydyn Bathurst From learning all things oral pathology in school we learn to memorise specific pictures in textbooks that we spot in exams and go ‘Yes! I’ve seen this pathology before!’ however when it comes to actually seeing oral pathologies in the mouth, particularly the pigmented lesion, it can get very confusing between what is normal, and what isn’t, particularly as we learn to look at wide ranging demographics of patients when first starting out. With me again is oral medicine specialist Dr Kang, and we look at what things to be aware of when spotting pigmented lesions, and what actions we can take to making sure we are providing essential care to our patients. Dr Michelle Kang Dr Michelle Kang is a board registered Oral Medicine Specialist. Her current roles include: Staff Specialist at Sydney Dental Hospital, Visiting Dental Specialist for Hunter New England LHD, Senior Lecturer and Academic Lead in Oral Medicine/Oral Pathology at Charles Sturt University and works at private practices in Sydney and Newcastle. Following graduation, she worked as a general dentist in public and private clinics throughout regional and metropolitan NSW. Dr Kang completed her specialist training through the University of Sydney and graduated with a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Oral Medicine). Dr Kang has multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals and is a reviewer for the European Journal of Dental Education. She is dedicated towards research and was selected to participate in the Research Leadership Training Programme by the World Health Organisation International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO IARC) in 2022. Her clinical interests include managing oral manifestations of systemic diseases, conditions affecting the salivary glands, oral mucosal diseases (including paediatric patients) and orofacial pain. FEATURE #82 – Business, Motherhood and Leading Women in Dentistry with Dr Vicky Prokopiou
Hosted by Dr Erica Hwin For many of us, perhaps one of the biggest reasons and deciding factors that led us to choose dentistry, was the work-life balance it would afford us. The flexibility in our working hours and a steady income that may one day allow us stability to settle down, work less days and have time to raise a family. But perhaps this is much easier said than done. There’s so much you want to do and learn and achieve, and before you know it, you’re struggling to juggle everything all at once. In this episode, with Dr Vicky Prokopiou, as someone who has been there and risen above it, we talk all about it – from her early years starting up a practice from scratch, to uprooting and moving to a small rural community of 3000 people 6 hours away from Sydney, and starting a family. We learn about the challenges she faced and overcame that has now bred the enthusiastic and positive mindset she has towards life. We talk about raising a family, about IVF and how to juggle the different hats of being a dentist, businesswoman and a mum. It’s a conversation we don’t talk a lot about, but something very very real. So join us for this episode, and let’s get above it! AHC Dental Education – What You Should Know Webinar As a new grad, the mental, the physical, the social and the emotional exhaustion of being on high function and putting your best foot forward for every patient that walks through the door, can take a huge toll. Much like decay left unaddressed, this can continue to fester and is the recipe for anxiety, burnout and depression, signs and symptoms our profession unfortunately knows all too well. So how can we recognise this, and more importantly, how do we prevent ourselves spiralling down this path? Australian Hands On Courses is running a free webinar with Dr Kaejenn Tchia (@thelimitlessdentist) to tackle exactly this. As part of their mission to help graduates accelerate their growth and reach their utmost potential, AHC is running a series of free online webinars and in person seminars on What You Should Know. Overcoming and Preventing Burnout in Dentistry is Module 3 of the series and will be run as a live webinar next Monday 17th April at 7:30pm AEST. TIP #119 – What is IBD and Its Role With the Mouth with Dr Michelle Kang
Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Haydyn Bathurst When we sign up to become dentists and study the art of teeth, we learn things like head and neck anatomy, prosthodontics in understanding the shape and contour of teeth, and orthodontics in where the teeth should sit in relation to the face. Apart from the aesthetic and engineering side of teeth, we too often forget about the function of teeth and the role of the mouth as part of a winding long tube that we all call the digestive system. With us here is Oral Medicine specialist Dr Michelle Kang to talk about a chronic condition that can very much present itself in the oral cavity inflammatory bowel disease. Stay tuned. Dr Michelle Kang Dr Michelle Kang is a board registered Oral Medicine Specialist. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Haydyn Bathurst In dentistry we learn lots about how bacteria is the cause of all our problems, from dental caries, gingivitis, pulp necrosis and periapical lesions, are all bacteria bad for us? To discuss this question I’ve brought on Senior Lecturer at Melbourne University, Dr Samantha Byrne to discuss all things saliva and the environment that it creates for our microbiome. Very quickly into this episode you’ll learn how quickly this stuff gets nuanced in that there’s not really such thing as a good or bad bacteria. Another is the different ways in which patients may misinterpret advice that we give them. Okay Dr I’ve stopped drinking that lemonade like you told me and replaced it with drinking lemon juice instead? Who knew spit could be so interesting. Let’s get into it! Dr Samantha Byrne Samantha Byrne is a senior lecturer in Oral Biology, and Divisional Lead Oral Education and Innovation at the Melbourne Dental School. Samantha has been awarded multiple times for her teaching of Oral Microbiology to Doctor of Dental Surgery and Bachelor of Oral Health students. She has a keen interest in learning and teaching, particularly the incorporation of practices which enhance student engagement and active learning. Samantha completed her PhD in 2006 where she explored the microbial composition of dental plaque associated with periodontal disease progression. This work was recognised by the Australian and New Zealand division of the International Association of Dental Research with the Oral Biology Award in 2010. She maintains a research interest in the microbial aetiology of chronic periodontitis and dental caries and supervises Doctor of Clinical Dentistry and Bachelor of Science Honours students. Her current research interests also include the use of social media as a platform for the dissemination of oral health information. Samantha is also currently studying for a Doctor of Education with the Melbourne Graduate School of Education examining pre-class learning on the flipped classroom.
