TIP #79 – The 4 Crucial Tips to Avoid Burnout with Dr Kaejenn Tchia

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Erica Hwin In an industry where we are almost geared to constantly pursue excellence and success, where we are often isolated in our practice and where the is an expectation to maintain our cool in front of patients, perhaps it’s no surprise that it forms the perfect breeding ground for burnout. But what exactly is burnout, and what can we do to prevent it? In this episode, we’re joined the Dr Kaejenn Tchia who is The Limitless Dentist. Dr Kaejenn runs his own Facebook and Instagram page where he openly shares his experience with burnout as a recent grad and he uses his platform to regularly share tips on practicing mental well-being. At DHS, we have always been advocates for mental health and we’re so glad to be able to dive into it in this episode to break down what burnout is, what causes it and Dr Kaejenn’s Top 4 tips on how to avoid it. For an industry that is so tight-knit, I really hope this helps us open up the discussion to talk about our shared experiences on a topic we all inevitably go through.  Dr Kaejenn Tchia A born and bred Territorian, Dr Kaejenn Tchia knew he wanted to be a dentist since high school. Dr Tchia went on to earn his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns, Queensland. He served as president for a two-year tenure from 2016 to 2017 for the James Cook University Dental Student Association (JCUDSA Inc.) as well as national Rural Officer for the Australian Dental Student Association (ADSA) in 2016. In his spare time, Dr Tchia enjoys travelling and trying new food spots with friends and family. He is also interested in business and entrepreneurship and also launched a motivational coaching company, The Limitless Dentist, aiming to break the mental health stigma in his profession and help his colleagues eliminate burnout and master their mindset.  Dental Practitioner Support Dental Practitioner Support is the first national 24/7 telephone and online service to support dental practitioner health and wellbeing in Australia. TIP #76 – Vertical Crown Preparations with Dr Bez Shokouhi

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel Ever heard of verti-preps? There was no mention of it in my dental school. But Dr Bez Shokouhi wishes he’d learned about it earlier in his career because it’s a game changer for the way he approaches some heavily damaged teeth.  Basically, it’s a type of crown preparation that has NO horizontal margin, meaning you can preserve a lot more tooth structure. This is possible thanks to properties of materials like zirconia that can perform well with a knife edge margin. Verti-preps allow for the creation of more subgingival ferrule and salvaging of teeth deemed otherwise unrestorable by traditional restorability standards. Dr Bez Shokouhi Dr Bez Shokouhi attained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery with first-class Honours in 2006 from King’s College London. He is a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons and the Joint Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has also completed 2 further university degrees, the King’s College London Postgraduate Diploma in Aesthetic Dentistry, and the University of Sydney Graduate Diploma in Dental Implants, plus a ridiculous number of other courses and seminars. Bez is passionate about dentistry and is an ever-learner, a tinkerer and an experimenter by nature, and as such he finds himself constantly innovating ways to tweak and improve his dentistry. He practices the full gamut of dentistry including complex restorative and aesthetic dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery, and dental implants. He has been involved in teaching at King’s College London and University of Sydney and is an examiner for the University of Sydney Graduate Diploma in Dental Implants. Bez is a mentor to many young dentists who regularly reach out to him online and visit him at his practice on the Northern Beaches for observation. Bez runs a popular Facebook page (Dentistry by Dr Bez Shokouhi) and Instagram page (@dr.bez.shokouhi) where he regularly posts detailed step-by-step dentistry cases. FEATURE #67 – Building Communities and the New Grad Experience with Dr Anthony Yammine and Dr Yasmin Samiee

Hosted by Erica Hwin Dental Head Start has always been about helping dental students become great dentists, and over the years, we’ve interviewed dozens of successful dentists to hear their journeys and tips for younger dentists. However, with the end of the year looming up and grad season upon us, I thought it would be interesting to turn things around a little, and actually hear things from a new grad’s perspective. And I couldn’t think of anyone better to chat with than Anthony and Yasmin. Anthony and Yasmin are finishing their first year out as dentists, but even from the get go as wide-eyed dental students, they were doing incredible things for the community. In their final year of dental school, they were the President and Secretary of the Sydney University Dental Association (SUDA) and are both now continuing to engage with the industry through their roles in the ADA NSW’s Recent Graduate and Advocacy committees. This was such an insightful conversation hearing Anthony and Yasmin’s fresh perspective on their job hunting process especially as a couple, different mentorship styles and finding the right balance between having confidence as a new graduate dentist, but also understanding their limitations. This is a heart-warming episode full of words of encouragement that I think one that our student listeners in particular will really enjoy! Timestamps 12:43 – Reflections on Anthony and Yasmin’s dental school experience. 27:32 – Yasmin discusses post graduate decisions and transition to private practice. 44:25 – Anthony talks about what mentorship looks like, and the different levels of mentorship. 56:46 – Management during your first few weeks in practice and instilling confidence in the new workplace. 1:08:13 – Anthony and Yasmin talk about their involvement outside of work. Dr Anthony Yammine Originally from the shores of Sydney, Anthony obtained both his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours) degrees from the University of Sydney before making the move to Tamworth. During his studies, Anthony was actively involved with the Sydney University Dental Association (SUDA), serving as President in his final year. Anthony was the recipient of many prestigious awards during dental school and was honoured to accept the Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation Scholarship in 2018, and the David Stanley Hall Memorial Prize for Proficiency in Prosthetic Dentistry in his final year. Upon graduation, Anthony was a top five finalist for the Australian Dental Graduate of the Year Award. Alongside his studies, Anthony published two research papers and has also been a demonstrator in head and neck anatomy for the past six years. After moving to Tamworth, Anthony maintains his involvement with the University, now as a lecturer in head and neck anatomy. Dr Yasmin Samiee Originally from Toronto, Canada, Yasmin enjoyed a few years in Sydney before relocating to Tamworth to join the Happy Smiles family. She is known for her warm demeanour and patience, and is interested in working with families and children. While studying, Yasmin dedicated herself to improving the student experience through the Sydney University Dental Association, serving as an elected representative for four consecutive years. She was honoured to accept the Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation Scholarship during her studies.  Outside dentistry, Yasmin loves singing, piano, and guitar and spending time with her partner and their cockatiel. She enjoys giving back to the community, having provided volunteer dental services through many charity organisations. TIP #70 – Making the Most of Final Year with Dr Jeff Kho

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Erica Hwin We all know that one kid who never seems to study, is always playing games or out hitting the town, and yet still passes with flying colours and is everyone’s favourite friend. Dental school is a rollercoaster. We’re learning the fundamentals of dentistry, figuring out what kinda dentist we want to be whilst trying to maintain a semblance of study-life balance. They say dental school is really just the beginnings of our journey and it all really starts the day we graduate, but what kind of things can we do now to really set us up on positive trajectory? In this episode, Dr Jeff Kho reminisces on his days in dental school – and (surprise surprise!) how he wasn’t that superstar student. He talks about what he would do differently, knowing what he does now, and the stresses that in hindsight, he would’ve worried less about. We dive into the areas and disciplines that new grads don’t have as much experience in and what we can do to fill that gap in knowledge. Above all, we talk about the importance and value of investing in ourselves. Dr Jeffrey Kho Dr Jeffrey Kho is one of Dentistry’s Top Entrepreneurs. He graduated from the University of Queensland with Honours in 2005, he opened his first clinic at the age of 26 and has now started a total of five successful clinics throughout South East Queensland. Aside from maintaining multiple private practices, Dr Kho also serves as a Key Opinion Leader and clinical advisor for several different companies. Dr Kho has over 10 years of experience with clear aligners and regularly trains dentists both nationally and internationally.  Dr Kho is also the founder of AHC Dental Education which runs courses that focuses on mastering the essentials of dentistry. These courses range from Oral Surgery and Endodontics to Communications and Tax and Law in Dentistry.  Having hired many graduates for his clinics over the years, Dr Kho understands the challenges new dentists go through when transitioning from dental school to working life. Dr Kho has a passion for educating and mentoring recent graduates and helping make their transition a seamless one. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Tackling a TMD case may not be the first thing a new grad dentist , albeit, an experienced one, would be comfortable doing. If you’ve come across patients like these, you know exactly what I’m talking about. This week I speak with Dr. Tony Au about his love for treating TMD patients, and ways YOU can start treating these cases, too. Tony’s practice is dedicated to treating patients with complex TMD issues, and he talks about what to lookout for to determine if a case would be within the scope of a general practitioner, or one that should be referred to a specialist. This is what Tony does day in, day out and you can hear the passion is his voice, so be like a sponge and soak up all this great information. Enjoy the episode! TIP #66 – Managing Patient Complexities with Clin A/ Professor Dr Tony Au

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Graeme Pearson For us students and new grads, communication is an area that doesn’t get much attention, but can be a make or break moment when talking with patients. Do you ever wonder how you can explain concepts to patients in simple terms? What about explaining pros/cons or risks about certain procedures? How will they even trust you enough to let you do such a procedure? In this interview with Clinical Associate professor Dr. Tony Au, we talk about all things communication. Tony is a specialist prosthodontist in Sydney who deals with complex cases AND complex patients daily. Tony provides us with his top tips on how to deal with pushy patients, how to use analogies to help patients understand concepts, and how to BED a patient. You heard that right, how to BED a patient. FEATURE #66 – [Re-Run] Dental Students to Graduates with Dr Rohan Krishnan

You’ve heard me say it before: Helping Dental Students Become Great Dentists This is our motto and our mission. So, it makes perfect sense to have Dr Rohan Krishnan on the podcast to share his views, experience and vision with the Dental Head Start community. Dr Krishnan has spent many years contributing to ADA NSW, initially on and then as chair of the Recent Graduate Committee and more recently as a Board Director. He is also on the board of Filling The Gap and runs his own private practice. Impressive, yet my interest was peaked when he shared his new project with the University of Sydney. Dr Krishnan has put together a course for Usyd students to help them with transitioning to private practice. Together with hand chosen people from his broad network of passionate, excellent colleagues, Rohan is able to make a difference at the coalface. And I truly hope this becomes an Australia and New Zealand University wide approach. With such aligned visions and missions, I could’ve spoken with Rohan for hours. For now, I hope you find his experiences and generous advice as useful and engaging as I did. In This Episode 9:16 – Rohan’s talks about his passion for learning and continually gaining knowledge.18:37 – The importance of personality when finding the best mentor for you. 24:50 – Rohan’s journey from associateship into practice ownership, and major differences he sees between the two roles.42:50 – What Rohan and the ADA recent graduate committee are doing for new dental graduates.53:32 – What pushes you to be more than just a clinician?1:01:54 – Rohan shares his advice to new grads surrounding the current industry conditions. TIP #63 – A Smarter Approach to CPD with Dr Kalyan Voruganti

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel Dentists rely on private courses and seminars to fill the gaps in their knowledge and skill set beyond the bare basics taught at dental school.  These gaps are not small. Most experienced dentists report that the vast majority of treatments they perform (for example CEREC, orthodontics, implants, photography, digital dentistry) or skills they rely upon for success (for example leadership, communication, management) were not learned in dental school; they were learned almost exclusively through private CPD taken after graduation.  Fortunately, there are many CPD options on the table and additionally, they’re offered across increasingly flexible platforms; in person, online, interactive workshops, live demonstrations and more.  However most dentists have an ad-hoc approach to CPD with little consideration given to mapping out their education plans over their career. With the average cost of CPD annually in the thousands (or 10’s of thousands), Dr Kalyan Voruganti shares with us a more strategic approach to selecting and maximising CPD choices over time. Dr Kalyan Voruganti Kalyan qualified in 2005 with Merit from Cardiff University in the UK, as one of the top ten students in his year. Not long after graduating, he did further study and gained the prestigious Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) in 2006 from the Royal College of surgeons of Edinburgh. With a thirst for learning, he has also completed a 2 year orthodontic diploma (with Dr Derek Mahony in 2017) which focuses on early interceptive orthodontics. This tries to prevent problems and treat them early. He has been placing Dental implants for almost 10 years and often mentors colleagues and graduate dentists to plan out their own cases. He has also worked in Liverpool Dental hospital and in Community specifically treating highly anxious patients His focus is making his patients’ dental experience as pleasant as possible and communicating very clearly to ensure patients understand their treatment. He is actively involved in Dental associations as well as multiple Dental forums. Training younger Dentists is something Kalyan really enjoys. He has also completed a teaching certificate in 2017 at the University of Melbourne and has been involved in training Dental Therapists and Hygienists as well as general mentoring of younger Dentists with the General Dental Residency (GDR) scheme. FEATURE #65 – Dental Practitioner Support with Dr Murray Thomas and Anthony Denham

As a student and graduate it is common to feel stress when we think about our regulator. Yet this often comes from a misunderstanding of how the Dental Board of Australia and APHRA work and what there goals really are. This episode we are lucky enough to be chatting the the Chair of the Dental Board, Dr Murray Thomas. But the core message is not the regulator themselves but an initive they support. That is of course Dental Practitioner Support (www.dpsupport.org.au), a helpline for dental professionals and their families. This is funded by the DBA in an effort to support dentists however is a completely confidential and seperate. Mr Anthony Denham joined us on this podcast as the Program Director at Turning Point, the organisation running dental practitioner support. This was a great conversation about a critical topic. Because after all, we can’t look after others if we’re not looking after ourselves. Timestamps 1:19 – Why mental health is an important topic to Anthony.9:45 – Murray talks about why DPS is important to him.23:16 – Considerations for new graduates when you begin working and accessing support when complaints are made against you.30:17 – How to leverage the support that DPS provides.46:15 – Being open to conversations surrounding daily stressors around our work, and how to get help.54:06 – Mistakes Murray and Anthony see young dentists making. BREAKING NEWS! WIWIK Takeover with Graeme & Erica

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Graeme & Erica Hold your horses! We have some new kids on the block! Things are changing here at Dental Head Start, and we have some really exciting plans moving forwards into the future that we can’t wait to share. But before we can get to that…has anyone seen David? In this episode, we’re taking things into our own hands and hijacking the show. Tune in to hear us share some of our visions for the show, and as we try to catch each other off guard with some silly get-to-know-us questions. It’s a fun and light-hearted chat and a little teaser for bigger things to come! Graeme Pearson Graeme was born and raised in the cold land of Ottawa, Canada and is continuing to defrost as he finishes his final year of dental school at The University of Sydney. He manages the editing for feature podcasts and works to ensure the audience has a great listening experience. Outside of school, you’ll find Graeme busy playing soccer, rock climbing, and going for hikes. With the abundance of great restaurants in Sydney, you’ll find him tagging along with his foodie friends who know all the best spots in town. Erica Hwin Born and raised in the humble ‘burbs of Melbourne, Erica is currently a third year dental student at The University of Sydney. She takes care of the social media and graphics, and is the nagging mum that’s constantly chasing everyone around.  Outside of student clinics, you’ll find her elbows deep in her crafts, hunting for new desserts with friends or marathoning yet another gruesome TV show. Be sure to say ‘Hi!’ to her on the DHS Instagram or Facebook pages – we promise she won’t bite. (If she does, we’ll be sure to make her a splint of some sorts!) The post BREAKING NEWS! TIP #62 – Stock & Inventory Management with Dr Namita Gupta

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel To practice dentistry, you need to have a lot of…stuff. Just open up a drawer or cabinet in any clinic and you’ll find hundreds of unique items that need to be ordered repeatedly from different suppliers. Some items are critical, some items expire, some are on special and some are on back-order. The whole ordering, inventory and stock management process in dental is time consuming, human-resource heavy and plain messy. Due to the sheer volume and variety of products that need to be ordered from multiple suppliers, all with their own e-portals, order forms or sales reps it’s no wonder things inevitably fall through the cracks. Just today our entire practice ran out of etch! As a multi-site practice owner, Dr Namita Gupta was no stranger to the pain points around ordering and stock management. She saw an opportunity to disrupt the wasteful and cumbersome old ways and co-founded Restoq, a centralised digital platform that streamlines and modernises inventory management for practices.  Dr Namita Gupta Co-Founder Restocq.com | Director Coastal Dental | Director Dental Sanctuary | Director Newcastle Dental Care With over 17 years of experience in the Dental Industry, Namita is an Implant and Cosmetic surgeon, educator and multi-business founder. Currently based in Sydney, Australia, she is Co-Founder of Restocq.com, a digital procurement solution for the medical and dental industries. Namita is also Co-Founder and principal of multiple greenfield dental practices. She is a Key Opinion Leader for Dental manufacturers, and is lecturer and examiner at the University of Sydney and The Implant Institute. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. FEATURE #64 – Becoming a Leader in the Community with Dr Mohit Tolani

“Why do you want to be a dentist?” The cliché response to this common question is that we want to help people. And it goes without saying, our general dentistry does this. But there is so much more that is possible. Community engagement, public health policy, volunteering and health advocacy are all areas that can make a wider impact. And Dr Mohit Tolani does them all. Mohit and I were lucky enough to meet at the Graduate of the Year Mini Residency in 2017. We were fresh out of University and ready to change the world. Interestingly, Mohit is well on his way. His education pathway and community involvement all demonstrates his dedication to the community and oral health outcomes at large. This is inspiring stuff for those who want to give back. TIP #58 – You Can’t Be Everything to Everyone with Dr Alistair Graham

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel As a dentist, you can’t be everything for everyone. Most of us learn this the hard way.  On this podcast, Dr Alistair Graham shares with us the value he gained from narrowing his career path and skill set in dentistry.  Determining the kind of dentist he wanted to be allowed him to focus his efforts and concentrate his skill development in the areas of dentistry that were right for him. Today, he and his team have absolute clarity on the kind of patient they want to attract to their clinic and as a result, they only perform the kind of dentistry they love. This is by design.  He explores the decision making process that every dentist has to go through to gain focus in their own career and determine the path that’s right for them. TIP #52 – Orthodontics by General Dentists with Dr Tim Maxwell

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel This is a slightly controversial subject, so we’re going to lean into it with Dr Tim Maxwell. It’s no secret that there are some specialist orthodontists who are against general dentists performing ortho. One of the reasons is that there is too vast a difference between the depth of education an orthodontist receives versus what’s available for general dentists to start immediately practicing ortho.  For a GP dentist wanting to learn ortho, not having the full support of the specialists doesn’t provide much confidence in what’s already a daunting educational pursuit. Not only that, there are strongly held and contentious opinions out there when it comes to different aspects of ortho: extraction vs non extraction, fixed vs clear aligners, age of intervention, degrees of airway involvement and more, further adding to the confusion.  Dr Tim Maxwell shares how he learned the importance of gaining both breadth and depth in navigating the world of orthodontic education for GPs. He talks about how to critically evaluate various education providers to gain a balanced perspective on the landscape and practice ortho competently and safely. Dr Timothy Maxwell Dr. Tim graduated from the University of Western Australia dux of his class in 2014. He was awarded the two highest honours for a graduating student: the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons Prize for top graduate, and the Welten Prize in Clinical Dentistry for top clinical graduate. He also achieved undergraduate prizes in histology, head and neck anatomy, endodontics, periodontics, general medicine and oral medicine. Dr. Tim practices the full scope of dentistry, with a special focus on cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics and oral surgery. He has completed two years of additional private training in orthodontics with Progressive Orthodontic Seminars in Sydney, and provides both fixed braces and clear aligner solutions including Invisalign. He has completed further surgical training in Australia, Singapore and Malaysia in dentoalveolar and implant surgery, and maintains a strong passion for digital dentistry using 3D scanning and printing technology. Born and bred in Perth, Dr. Tim is a keen surfer and parent of two young Border Collies, Mochi and Kimchi. Prior to settling back in Perth, Tim’s partner Sophie and himself practiced dentistry in Singapore and regional New South Wales. Sophie and Tim’s first clinic will be opening in Mount Hawthorn, 5 minutes from the Perth CBD, in the future. TIP #51 – BAD Dentistry with Dr Tim Maxwell

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel Dr Tim Maxwell is a pretty BAD dentist. That is, he practices bio-mimetic, aesthetic dentistry. It’s a concept that’s fast taking over long-standing, traditional approaches to restorative dentistry.  Advances in modern adhesive dentistry has allowed for substantially more conservative, additive and long-lasting restorative options for our patients.  More importantly, it’s highlighted just how reductive, destructive and unnecessary many of those past practices were, and still are. Dr Tim Maxwell is one of the leading dentists that challenges those methods, most of which are still taught at universities today.  In this podcast, he explains to us the key principles behind biomimetic aesthetic/adhesive dentistry and the advantages it offers both patients and the longevity of their teeth. He walks us through the practical aspects of biomimetic prep design, adhesion, immediate dentine sealing so you can start practicing BAD dentistry tomorrow. Here’s a scenario – you have a patient that comes in with pain in their jaw, sore muscles, chips all along their front teeth and wear facets across all their back teeth. As dentists, we’re trained to immediately think of issuing a splint to protect the teeth. But what do we do when that doesn’t work, and is issuing a splint always the right solution? In this episode Dr Damian Teo sheds some light on this tricky situation and shares the three reasons he would use a splint. This is a special addition to the Bruxism, TMD & OSA trilogy we’ve already released with Dr Damian Teo earlier on in the year, so don’t forget to flick back to make sure you’re up to date.1. Bruxism (TIP #28)2. Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TIP #36)3. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (TIP #40) These are deep dives into some key topics that often leave us confused after our undergraduate training. I hope this helps open your eyes and perhaps inspires you to learn more. Find out more from Dr Damian Teo and learn along side hundreds of others on his Facebook Group Sleep and TMJ Study Club and if you want to go to the next level, find his courses here. Dr Damian Teo made a point that he is always approachable on Facebook or even via email. If you want to learn more about OSA and treatment dentists can provide, don’t miss our feature interview with Dr Harry Ball: #52 – Mandibular Advancement Splints Dr. Damian Teo In his dentistry, Damian is passionate about looking “beyond the mouth” and treating the body as a whole. He believes dentists play an important role in being able to recognise airway/breathing issues, sleeping problems, and craniofacial pain (such as headaches, neck pain, and TMJ disorders). This led him to undergo extensive postgraduate training with world renowned specialists in the field of sleep medicine and TMJ disorders. Damian is a member of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA), and has a Post Graduate Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine with the University of Western Australia. Damian also consults out of the Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre, and previously worked in Darwin’s first official TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre, where he exclusively treated patients for snoring, sleep apnoea, teeth grinding and TMD. Damian understands the value in working with skilled allied health practitioners outside of dentistry. He has presented talks and held seminars to medical and dental professionals to spread the knowledge that dentists can help one’s health and quality of life “beyond the mouth.” OrthoEd My Journey So Far The OrthoEd Segment is a partnership between OrthoEd and Dental Head Start, aiming to bring you on the journey of the OrthoEd Mini Masters and my personal journey of orthodontic treatment. TIP #43: Talking Money with Dr Sam Koh

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. So, you just told the patient why they need a crown and they completely agree that the treatment makes sense. Now comes the hard part, quoting the fee. You think to yourself, are they expecting it to be this high? The last patient was so shocked by the price and didn’t re-book. What if they don’t go ahead with the treatment? And my crowns aren’t as good as those other dentists I see on Facebook; who am I to charge this much? Perhaps I should give them a discount. They are a student after all. I’ll just get the front desk to email them the quote later. Sound familiar? Most of us feel a little uncomfortable discussing fees with our patients. It’s no longer just a conversation about what’s clinically the best treatment option for them; this is what we are trained to do. It’s far more personal and the struggle we have around the subject says more about us, our mindset and biases around money than anything else. Dr Sam Koh shares his top tips around shifting our mindset so that we can discuss treatment fees with less fear and greater confidence. Dr. Sam Koh Dr Sam Koh is a Melbourne-based dentist, graduating from The University of Melbourne with First Class Honours. As the principal dentist of Orions Dental Taylors Lakes & Heyfield Dental Group, his special interests are in Cosmetic Dentistry and Orthodontics. Following a personal recommendation from world-renown Orthodontist Dr Derek Mahony, Dr Koh has been awarded with a prestigious fellowship from the International Academy of DentoFacial Esthetics in New York, and also holds a fellowship in orthodontics as well as a fellowship from the Pierre Fauchard Academy in London. Dr Koh is a proud member of the Colgate Advocates for Oral Health: Editorial Committee. He is also the co-founder of the Young Dentist Hub, which has over the last few years been at the forefront of dental education events in Australia for young dentists and students alike, both of which he is highly enthusiastic and devoted to mentoring. Further to this, he is also a KOL for KaVoKerr, as well as several other dental companies such as ClearCorrect and Pola Whitening.
