It goes without saying that a trait of our industry is being high achievers. What comes with big dreams is often big decisions, and when faced with too many, we can find ourselves inflicted by decision paralysis. What kind of dentist do I want to become, what kind of practice do I want to work at, what kind of people do I want to surround myself with? Do I want to specialise, do I want to go into research, do I want to become a practice owner or do I enjoy general dentistry for what it is? These are all decisions that can be very overwhelming. In this episode, we speak with Dr Alex Khominksy about his journey in dentistry, from a dental student with a hunger for knowledge, working his first year in a tertiary referral centre before transitioning into private practice, then beginning his post graduate training in periodontics, all the whilst co-founding the General Dental Residency on the side.  Dr Alex Khominsky Dr Alex Khominsky graduated from the University of Adelaide as Dux and Moore Medallion, he went onto work at Alfred Hospital and afterwards private practice in the Melbourne area.  Always involved in the profession through ADA and Societies, he is a firm believer in the power of a community and supporting other early-career dentists in their pursuit to be amazing clinicians. Through that belief, he co-founded General Dental Residency as an education community geared towards helping dentists excel in comprehensive general dentistry. Welcome to the New Grad Focus Series by Dental Head Start. Join us across a limited series of episodes as we take a deep dive into the journey of a new grad, covering various topics from multiple different angles.  Hosted by Dr Phillip Nguyen During our time in dental school, most of us will only work in a setting treating patients within the public system. But the statistics show that about 90% of us will work in a private practice when we graduate. So do you know the differences between working in a public job vs a private job?  In this episode, we are joined by Dr Bianca Lee and Dr Steph Ib and we speak about the core differences of working in these different sectors and how they can change our growth pathway. We discuss topics like remuneration structures, work/life balance, opportunities to extend your scope and much, much more. If you are a final year student or new graduate listening to this episode, I hope you learn something new and perhaps it will open your eyes to working in a sector that you had not thought about much previously. Enjoy the episode! Dr Steph Ib Dr Stephanie studied at The University of Melbourne and attests her confidence and resilience in private practice to the challenging experiences that built her foundation. Volunteering for The Royal Flying Doctor Service inspired her to go beyond her comfort zone. FEATURE #74 – Success & Dentapreneurialism with Dr Kinnar Shah

Hosted by Erica Hwin One of the things we always try to do with the podcast is to bring on dentists from all different walks of life because there are so many facets to dentistry. But, we don’t know what we don’t know. Most of us go through dental school only ever seeing the clinical side – practicing as a general dentist, specialising, academics & research. But this is really just the tip of the iceberg. In this month’s feature we are joined by Dr Kinnar Shah. Dr Kinnar is a Dentapreneur – that is, the intersection between dentistry and entrepreneurialism. He is a business and success coach, where he helps dentists and practice owners realise their full potential or as he might say, “Create their destiny by design, not by default.” In this episode, we talk about what success is and the journey towards it, how books have played a paramount importance in Dr Kinnar’s life and different non-clinical skills that are needed to go far in our careers. We talk about Dentapreneurs which is the group Dr Kinnar created to connect like-minded individuals in the industry, what it means, where it’s headed and how we can all be involved. In Dr Kinnar’s words, “Be curious.”  Join the Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1631560323744258/ Dentapreneurs Networking Event (November 12th 2022): https://dentapreneurs.wpengine.com Dr Kinnar Shah Being a Certified High Performance Coach, a Number 1 Amazon Best Selling Author, a Certified Gallup Strengths Coach & a NLP business and Leadership Coach, he specializes in working with the innate strengths and talents of the entire Team for the potential of higher success. He has coached and consulted numerous businesses in the last 8 years to implement certain methods and strategies to double or triple the number of daily clients, get more employee engagement, deliver a client experience second to none and ultimately having a better quality of life.  ”Being active in the coaching and dental field, I understand the unique challenges of today’s Dental Practice owners.  My fresh perspective, innovative methods and system blueprints, will help facilitate your business and success to higher levels.  There are 2 kinds of “Dentapreneurs” in this world; those who make excuses and those who get results.  My aim is to help you achieve great results by inspiring you through Mindset, Motivation and Methods. I will push you to be the best version of yourself and make you wildly more successful than you ever thought possible.” Asher’s Gift – Humpty Dumpty Foundation Page For those who have been listening for a while and have followed along with David’s journey, you may be aware of baby Asher’s passing this time last year. FEATURE #73 – Marathoning Dentistry, Endodontic Training & PhDs with Dr Aovana Timmerman

Hosted by Erica Hwin If there’s one thing I took away from this episode with Dr Aovana Timmerman, it is that dentistry is a marathon not a sprint. It takes discipline, persistence and a consistent pace to maintain motivation and prevent burnout.  In this episode, we talk to Dr Aovana about what it is that drives her passion for continuous learning and growth in dentistry, and the parallels our profession has with physical activity. We reflect on her journey as a general dentist for 10 years, before undergoing endodontic specialist training, research and why she’s now chosen to undertake a PhD.  Dr Aovana is a fantastic role model and really instills confidence in young dentists that there is so much potential for us to do great things – we just have to chase it! Dr Aovana Timmerman Aovana graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science from the University of Melbourne in 2001 and after completing her fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) in 2010, she continued with her specialist training obtaining a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontics. Aovana was awarded the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching in 2019, then conferred Membership in Specialist Dental Practice discipline of Endodontics in 2021. She has been actively involved in endodontic education since 2011 and currently examines DDS students at Melbourne Dental School as well as dentists in the Membership (GDP) program for RACDS and Australian Dental Council. Aovana also works part-time in private practice at Collins Street Specialist Centre while pursuing her PhD in Endodontic Education at the University of Melbourne and has published research in both local and international peer-reviewed journals. TIP #91 – The Non-Tooth-Related Toothache with Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Erica Hwin “If you cannot replicate the pain, don’t take the tooth out.” The non-tooth-related toothache – the age old conundrum that seems to trouble all dentists. But what is it really in the hands of an oral medicine specialist? In this episode, Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen breaks down orofacial pain – from its presentation and diagnosis to how it might be managed. We talk about what general dentists should expect when these patients present at their door, and how they should liaise with specialists. This is a dense and fascinating discussion about the complexities of orofacial pain. And whilst it may be beyond the scope of general dentists to treat alone, I think it is crucial to appreciate what it is to understand where we stand in the holistic management and treatment of these patients. Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen Amanda is an Oral Medicine Specialist. Her clinical and research interests include oral mucosal disease, orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, dental sleep medicine and paediatric oral medicine. She is an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and on the Board of Studies for Oral Medicine. Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel As dentists, we are uniquely positioned to assess and diagnose patients with disorders around the airway, sleep and how it relates to orofacial facial pain. The impact of these conditions on a patient’s life can be chronic and debilitating (severe fatigue, pain) and can impact their general and mental health in a plethora of ways – mood, reflux, parafunction, concentration, blood pressure etc.  Frequently it’s the case that the underlying issue for many of these patients – airway and sleep disorders – remain undiagnosed and untreated until it’s picked up by a dentist. A thorough dental assessment can reveal signs and symptoms that go on to trigger further investigations or referrals to ultimately uncover what can be a life changing diagnosis for a patient.  Dr Rohan Krishnan recently completed his masters in the field Sleep Medicine and Orofacial pain management. He explains the important role dentists play in the initial diagnosis and management of sleep and airway disorders.  Dr Rohan Krishnan Dr Rohan Krishnan is a General Dentist and practice owner in West Pymble, NSW. FEATURE #71 – Mastering Your New Patient Consult with Dr Derry Rogers

Hosted by Erica Hwin Dentistry is rapidly evolving and there are so many concepts which we just take for granted nowadays. It’s hard to imagine a time where composite resin wasn’t the normal, digital dentistry didn’t exist and social media wasn’t as prevalent as it is now.  But Dr Derry Rogers has been able witness all of these changes first hand. Having graduated in 1977 and practiced for over 40 odd years, Dr Rogers was there when the adhesive revolution occurred and was one of the founding fathers that helped bring cosmetic dentistry to Australia. With this wealth of knowledge, Dr Rogers continues to lecture internationally, runs courses through The DR Institute and hosts his own Online Dental Mentoring Podcast In this episode, we dive into how Dr Rogers conducts his new patient consultations and the tips he has for new graduates to become more effective clinicians. TIP #81 – Alternate Career Pathways with Dr Rohan Krishnan

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel Being an operative dentist is the obvious career path after dental school, but it’s far from being the only option.  In this podcast, Dr Rohan Krishnan explains why dentists are uniquely qualified to work in non-operative roles such as governance, education, non-profit organisations and other professional and regulatory bodies.  He challenges us to explore how we can apply ourselves in an alternative capacity; perhaps as an advisor, board member, educator, committee organiser or executive, to unlock opportunities to do greater good and create true impact beyond our individual patients.  Not only is Dr Krishnan a successful dentist and practice owner, he is the vice president of ADA NSW, Chairman of the “Filling the Gap” organization and a board member of the Australian Dental Council.  Tune in to hear about his journey beyond the drill. Dr Rohan Krishnan Dr Rohan Krishnan is a General Dentist and practice owner in West Pymble, NSW.
