Get Lit: Forget the Pressure to Find Your Why with Dominick Quartuccio

E

Today there is so much pressure to find our why, to have a clear purpose in life. Some people seem to have it all figured out. We see them on social media living their dreams. Others think they know what they were meant to be, only to find out they're unfulfilled. Those of us who haven't defined a clear purpose yet seem to be looked down on (or maybe we just feel that way). Today's guest tells us why you need to forget the pressure to find your why and how to let it reveal itself to you. Dominick Quartuccio, bestselling author of Design Your Future: 3 Simple Steps to Stop Drifting and Take Command of Your Life, is back on The Dad Edge. He says that in looking too hard for our purpose in life, it eludes us. Most people don't know what their destiny is, and that's okay. He teaches us how to analyze our lives to become aware of what lights us up, and how to follow that passion to create a life that excites us. The Secrets to Achieving Wildly Important Goals with Mark Divine

Breaking the Chain of Bad Fathering

E

Being a dad is the toughest and most important job in the world. For those of us who didn't have a good dad to learn from, it's even more difficult to navigate life. We didn't have a proper role model, leaving us without a map to become a good husband and father. But breaking the chain of bad fathering is complex. Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we see ourselves falling into the same behaviors we watched as a kid. We feel hopeless and infuriated. There were no resources for men in previous generations, but we're going to change that. The mission of the Dad Edge is to empower fathers to be their best. Today, we have a Dad Edge Alliance member on the show to talk about his experience being raised by a violent dad. He vowed not to become like his father, but he fell into the same patterns after his own son was born. He knew he had to stop the cycle for the sake of his son. Listen to how he learned to grow beyond his upbringing to become a happy, confident, and resilient man. A rising tide lifts all ships, and by doing life with good men, John has stopped drifting and is now actively shaping his destiny. Hard Love: How to Raise Resilient Kids

None of us likes to see our kids hurt or disappointed. We dads have the natural urge to keep them in a protective bubble, to make sure they are shielded from harm, but one of the biggest mistakes we can make as parents is to not let our kids make mistakes. Today we have Dad Edge Alliance member Daniel Nolan on the show. He is a self-confessed helicopter parent in recovery and the creator of the Hard Love Project. Helicopter parenting is when we hover over our children to make sure nothing bad happens to them. We're all guilty of this at times, but Daniel tells us how to raise resilient kids by challenging them to step out of their comfort zone and exposing them to life. Kids and Allowance: Money-Smart Habits in Action

In our previous episode, John Lanza, author of The Art of Allowance, shared some ideas about kids and allowance that probably made a lot of us scratch our heads. He told us that the traditional practice of giving allowance for chores was not a good way to teach kids about managing money or work ethic. He also explained what a breakthrough allowance is, and how as kids get older they should get as much as $100 in allowance! These ideas may seem crazy at first, but they work in unexpected ways. Listen to what happened when I implemented these money-smart habits with two of my kids. For the show notes and links in this episode, go to gooddadproject.com/thursday129.

Finding the Strength Through the Struggle

Today we talk to a man who never wanted to be a dad. The thought of fatherhood terrified him. He thought so little of himself, he didn't think he was even worthy to procreate. He thought that when his time was done on Earth, there should be no evidence that he even existed. This man's name is Mark Globowsky, and he is the host of the Strength Through the Struggle podcast. His beliefs of unworthiness and inferiority were the result of his upbringing with a physically and emotionally abusive father. But Mark stepped boldly into the dark, confronting his issues head on. He surrounded himself with the right people, men who showed him the truth about himself. Now Mark has someone to call him 'daddy' for the rest of his life. Becoming a father was the best thing that could've ever happened to him. He shares how we can mine our pain and our past, finding strength through the struggle to become the man that we decide we want to be. How to Stop Obsessing Over Life's Trivial Problems

Our previous episode was called A Father's Last words and it was something TDE has never done before. Brian Froneyberger bravely and generously gave of the perspective of a father who was dying of cancer. It was a true privilege to listen to his wisdom about what really matters to a person who knows their time is running out. Tragically, he passed away between the recording and release of the show and his funeral service was held the very day his episode came out. Having this conversation with Brian forced things into perspective. We often get frustrated with our kids. We get irritable with our spouses. We stress about work. Most feel like we're under a burden of obligations, but we have the choice to turn this around. Brian would give anything to be here having the problems we are facing right now. It's not what happens to us, it's how we respond to it. We can be the calm in the middle of the storm if we don't obsess over life's trivial problems. When we're feeling stressed, depressed, or hopeless, we must ask ourselves, is worrying really worthy of our precious time? Wouldn't it be better to focus our emotions on what really matters in life? Shouldn't we be giving our energy to the things that we love instead of those we hate? For the show notes and the links in this episode go to gooddadproject.com/thursday127.
