This week, I sat down with Jon Heck, Owner of Hammer and Chisel Performance. Jon played football at the University of North Carolina, where he was a 4-year starter and a 2x All-ACC selection at offensive tackle for the Tar Heels. He graduated with a degree in Exercise Sport Science, and immediately received certifications as a nutritionist and strength and conditioning coach. He began his career as a strength and conditioning coach. He spent nearly a decade working in football strength and conditioning at the NFL and Division-1 college level and in the private sector at a combine prep facility. He competed at a high level in powerlifting and strongman and has always been passionate about strength sports in general. In this episode, I sit down with someone I consider to be a mentor of mine - a person who was a massive influence on me as a coach early on in my career, from the way he carried himself in the weight room to the professional curiosity he approached his work. In this episode, I sit down with Nate Harvey. Nate and I first met at a powerlifting meet in Rochester, NY and when he was serving as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of Buffalo, I’d always beg him to come and let me train in the school’s weight room to break up my 8hr drive to and from Ottawa and Pittsburgh. We go WAY back!Nate developed his vast athletic history as the former head strength coach of Olympic sports at The State University of New York at Buffalo. During his 10 years at UB, he coached their first-ever national champion (shot put), four team conference champions (one back-to-back), eight of the school's twelve total All-Americans, 18 Olympic trial qualifiers, over 50 individual conference champions, 16 individual national qualifiers, and over 75 individual regional qualifiers using the conjugate method. He was also a strength and conditioning consultant for the New York Jets. He was certified in Reflexive Performance Reset in February 2017. His best total is 2,450 in the 308 weight class multi-ply division. In the 275-pound class, his best total is 2,250 sans supraspinatus. His best lifts are a 1,000-pound squat, a 750-pound bench, and a 750-pound deadlift. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Chris “Marv” Marvin. Dr. Christopher (MARV) Marvin DC has been involved in health, wellness and fitness for over 17 years. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Sonoma State University and his Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer College West in San Jose, California as class valedictorian. Dr. Marv acquired extensive experience in the physical therapy space during his undergraduate studies, as well as in the corporate gym environment as a fitness coach and specialist. #90 - Recovery, Pain and the Individual - Joel Proskewitz
In this episode of the podcast, I sit down with Joel Proskewitz once again. If you didn’t catch our previous discussion, it directly feeds into this conversation. Both Joel and I have experienced traumatic injury and today, we discuss our experiences and how we draw on those experiences as we work to help our clients navigate their own recovery. Joel Proskewitz is a spinal rehabilitation specialist. He deals primarily with mechanical neck and low back pain and has a special interest in pre/post spinal surgery patients. He is one of only two people in the world to teach for Professor Stuart McGill (Head of spinal biomechanics, University of Waterloo) and travels the world extensively teaching and sharing his experience, understanding and rehabilitation of the human spine to a mix of clinicians, spinal surgeons, and associated professionals. He is the only non-physician to be a permanent member of an elite spinal medical team in London, UK and works closely with surgeons, pain consultants, rheumatologists, and radiologists. He regularly presents and contributes towards complex spinal cases with his medical team.
