Ep 422422: Knee Tear, Anxiety Relief, Workout PDF, Ayurvedic Dosha, Magnesium Supplements, Liver Flush, Joint Pain from Exercise (HouseCall)
We're back with our 2nd Cabral #HouseCall of the weekend! And just like yesterday's Q&A we're going to be answering another round of community questions sent in by you, our listeners! Here are today's questions: Erika: Dr. Cabral - thanks so much for all of your podcasts. I can't wait to visit your practice in Boston sometime soon. I just had a terrible accident skiing, which involved an IV, ambulance ride, hours in the ER, and 48 hours of oxycodene. My X-rays show that I didn't break anything. I lost my footing going pretty fast in steep terrain on an alpine run and skied fast right into a tree with my left shin. I got an MRI this morning and have been told I have a grade 2 partial tear of my PCL, I also tore my knee capsule, and sprained my MCL. I haven't heard much on this on your podcasts, but was wondering... is there something I can start putting in my diet on a daily basis to help heal the partial tear? I'm really hoping not to have surgery... also what is the top thing you recommend for inflammation of this magnitude? I was a D1, and professional athlete- I work out multiple times a day and am very committed to my recovery. Thanks soooooo much for taking the time to answer my question! Staying positive and hopeful!! Erika Elise: Hello Dr Cabral, I have struggled with anxiety to a certain degree my whole life. It has always been more separation anxiety until after I had my first son three years ago. Since then it has increasingly been changing and getting worse. I often struggle with leaving my "comfort bubble" which I have created in my home town. I say often because it doesn't always happen there are some situation where I can go somewhere and be totally fine. Then other times just trying to drive an hour away becomes extremely difficult/impossible. When the attacks happen it feels like a ball is in my stomach and the more the anxiety grows it feels like roots are growing through my gut. I long to be free and to be able to travel and take my sons places. But I don't exactly know where to start that doesn't involve being medicated. I would love to find a natural solution to actually bring healing to my body as a whole. I have been taking probiotics for years and have changed my diet a bit. I also just recently started taking omega-3 after reading that could help with anxiety. I am just at a loss I don't know where to start. If you have any advice on where to start or any suggestions on what type of blood tests/labs, supplements or diet changes I should look into I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much. Debbie: Hello, I just recently found your podcasts and am loving them! Is it possible for you to send me the PDF downloads from episode #292? When I click on them they are expired. Thanks and keep up the great work! Debbie Tom: Hi Dr. Cabral, I recently purchased the Prakriti book you had made a book review of in one of your earlier podcasts. After doing the test to figure out my constitution, I discovered that I'm a PItta with Vata as secondary. I also remember you had mentioned that you as well are Vata-PItta. My question is about nutrition. How strictly do you follow the nutritional guidelines Dr. Svoboda mentions? Do you follow a vata pacifying diet in winter and pitta pacifying in summer? I'm just finding it hard to follow this protocol. How strict should I be with this? Thank you! Lauren: Hi Stephen, Thank you for your great podcast. It is my go-to. You may have already discussed Magnesium but, I was wondering if you had a preference. I have heard good things about Life Extension magnesium citrate and Pure magnesium Glycerite. I generally want to take magnesium for overall health as well as for my back pain and heart health. Can you please advise? Thanks Wellness Catalyst: Love your posts and podcasts. My question is "Is a liver and gallstone flush necessary and if so what protocol do you recommend?" You probably already covered this but what protocol do you recommend for a child with severe eczema? Thanks for including that book review on Friday, great minds seem to enjoy similar things including books! Many blessings, your contributions are greatly appreciated- Belinda: Hi Stephen, I just got back from India, Mysore where I have completed a month long 200h yoga teacher training. While it has been an amazing experience, I feel it has also left me broken. We had approximately 3-4h yoga per day which wasn't the problem but we were probably sitting cross legged at least 2h per day for meditation, pranayama, etc on the floor as well and on the last day we did 108 sun salutations (quite proud I managed to get through that). Anyway, my knees hurt really badly and my wrists hurt as well. Nothing is visibly swollen and I can walk and jump without pain. It's when I sit down or want to do sun salutations at home that there is this this point when I bend my knee that I have excruciating pain. Been given an oil by an ayurvedic doc which I use, but doesn't seem to cut it. The ayurvedic doc also sai
Ep 421421: Food Allergies, Over Eating, PreNatal Vitamins, Skin Rash, Holistic Chef, Alopecia, Kidney Disease (HouseCall)
This weekend on the Cabral #HouseCall we have our most questions ever answered over a 2-day period! Our community's questions have been piling up, so we're catching up this weekend with some amazing Q&A – Enjoy the show! Susan: Hi Dr. Cabral. I'm a rabid fan – and could probably spend most of this email heaping praise onto you, but I will get to the point because I know you are so very busy. My daughter has food sensitivities and we have been super diligent about removing the items we think are the cause. When we removed gluten her eczema was better. When we removed dairy her constipation improved. We don't feed our children a lot of processed foods but the odd time when my daughter attends birthday parties and has a piece of cake etc her symptoms seem to explode. If she plays ringette her hands become raw…. She has only had antibiotics twice in her life (she's 5) once was steroid eye drops as a result of cataract surgery. I am in the process of getting her food sensitivities tested. Is there anything else you might recommend? Thank you – your value to your profession cannot be measured. Wendy: Dr. Cabral, I am a regular listener to your podcast and I love the education I'm getting every day! I am a certified holistic nutritionist in Wyoming. I eat 95 percent clean – no bread of any kind, no dairy, and no processed foods. I exercise 6 times per week for at least a half hour every day doing a combination of cardio and strength. However, I am about 15 pounds over my ideal weight and can't seem to break this plateau. I recognize that part of my problem is that I have a food addiction – I eat when I'm not hungry, and even though I eat very healthy food, it's more than my body needs. I go through periods of time when I'm more disciplined, but even then I can only manage to lose about 3-4 pounds and I plateau. Have you run across this scenario before, and what do you suggest that your patients do about it? Thank you again for all the fabulous tips you give in your podcasts! Oh, and for the record, I'm all in for the Training Thursday kettlebell challenge you talked about on the March 9 show – I'll be starting that tomorrow! Briana: Dear Dr. Cabral, I recently purchased your prenatal package. I am about ten weeks pregnant with number three, I lead a healthy life and do a lot of reasearch but still find myself confused when it comes to choosing the best for my babies! I have been a listener for about 6 months and have learned so much and come to value your opinion! That being said I wondered why there is no vitamin K in the orthomelecur prenatal. I didn't think too much of it until I heard your recent podcast about the benefits of vitamin k. In my previous pregnancies I took Seeking Health's prenatal which contains 100mcg. Do you feel supplemental vitamin k imoportant during pregnancy? You teased a pregnancy episode and I hope it is the works soon! Keep up the amazing work, it is truly a public service! John: Hi Dr. Cabral, I love your show and listen to it when I'm in the car. I have a slightly raised, red, "rash" around my neck, collarbone, centre of my back, and it sometimes crawls up to my ears. It looks like several little circles about 1 cm in diameter. It's not itchy and it doesn't hurt. I went to the conventional doctor 3 times and they said I have tinea versicolor. I work in a hot & humid environment at least 5 days a week (I'm a chef). It flares up when my body temperature rises. I exercise regularly, eat mostly plant based, and have a strong immune system. I have taken an anti-fungal medication (pill and topical). My symptoms went away with the pill but not with the cream. I have done your detox (about 2 months ago) and have had a flare up since then. What do you recommend? Thank you, John Tania: Hi Dr. Cabral, I love all your work so much. Thank you for sharing all that you do. I always share your podcasts with my friends and family. I have a question about my career path and would love your insight. I am a classically trained chef but have recently become extremely interested in health & wellness. Every day, I listen to podcasts and read books to further my knowledge. I have always believed that food is medicine and have been mostly plant-based for over a year. I am looking to further my education in the holistic/naturopathic space but don't know where to start. I definitely want to continue cooking for a living but I want to have a strong foundation in health. I worry that I won't be able to acquire the information that I need by going to a holistic nutrition school, and time is of the essence for me. I know you speak highly of your travels and have considered seeking practical work experience abroad (India, Sri Lanka, Europe). I appreciate any advice you may have. Thank you once again for all that you do. You are an inspiration. Tania Maria: How does alopecia happen and is there a cure besides rogaine, which is not a cure. Never really heard about it till it happened to me. Thank you Dr. Cabral love
Ep 420420: Ear, Nose & Throat Cures, Nut Milk & Butter Maker, Hawaiian Herbal Medicine (FR)
The #FridayReview is here and I've got some fantastic recommendations and reviews from this past week on all things wellness, weight loss & anti-aging! The first item I want to share with you is my protocol for helping both children and adults with earaches, sinus congestion, sore throats, and much more... Second, there's a fun KickStarter campaign going on right now that is offering a brand new machine (it's like a cross between a blender & food processor) to make homemade nut milk and nut butter... And finally, I've got a brand new "obscure" wellness book from my last trip to Hawaii that talks about ancient and modern cures using plants & herbal medicine... Ep 419419: The Surprising Benefits of Aerobic Exercise? (TT)
It's easy for all of us to hop on the band wagon and ride along with the current dogma of the day, but the problem is that the whole truth usually gets left behind... This is clearly evident when Interval Training became the dominant form of exercise (with good reason) for body transformation and overall health... The issue is that what often happens in our "all-in society" is that we bash and slander anything that doesn't fit in this box... That's why on today's #CabralConcept 419 I want to share the "Surprising Benefits of Aerobic Exercise" and why you just may want to add some to your current program - Enjoy the show! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/419 - - - Get your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral

It's interesting, but study after study are confirming that there are healthy gut bacteria missing from people that gain weight easily and can't seem to take it off no matter what they do... So on today's show I want to bring that new, cutting-edge research to you and explain how to rebalance your gut bacteria to then help lose the weight and reshape your body for life! Ep 417417: Treating Digestive Issues with Fiber (TWT)
One of the biggest misconceptions in nutrition and natural health is how to heal the gut using carbohydrates... The old way used to recommend cutting out all fruits, starches, grains, and most vegetables... However, modern science (as well as ancient Ayurvedic wisdom) has revealed that only certain types of carbs, sugars, and fibers need to be omitted for a short period of time... Following this type of plan, as well as adding back in fiber to your daily diet will ensure that your diverse gut microbiome can thrive for years to come... Tune into today's #CabralConcept 417 to learn more about treating digestive issues with fiber - Enjoy today's show! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/417 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
416: Stop Focusing on the Small Stuff (MM)
Losing sight of what matters most to you in life can happen for 2 main reasons... The first one is that you're so caught up in your day-to-day activities, stresses, and ongoings that by the time you stop to breathe it's already time to go to bed... The second reason is that when we're actually going after our goals and what we truly desire in life we get lost in a sea of minutia that has very little bearing on what will move us forward... The way to break the cycle is to rewire our mind and conditioning and thought process to stop focusing on the small stuff... Tune into today's #CabralConcept 416 for how to do just that - Enjoy the show! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/414 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral

Ep 415415: Stomach Pain, Knee Pain, Lignite Extract, Crowns & Dental Work, Cutting Boards, Never Satiated (HouseCall)
We're back with our 2nd Cabral #HouseCall of the weekend and I'm happy to have you back with us! Here are today's community questions: Melissa: Dr. Cabral, I enjoy listening to your podcast and thank you for all of the wonderful information that you provide. After having my third baby three years ago via c-section, I have had significant pain in my stomach after eating meals. This began occurring 6 weeks post-delivery and does not seem to be related to any specific food. It typically occurs within 30 minutes after a meal and can last for hours. I am extremely bloated, and am 40 pounds overweight even though I eat a very healthy diet (around 1200-1400 calories daily of fresh produce) and exercise daily. I have had a multitude of tests - gallbladder, ultrasounds of liver, blood tests, colonoscopy, endoscopy, food allergy tests - all of which come back normal, with my only diagnosis as constipation. After eliminating dairy and added sugars and taking Mirilax daily, my symptoms resolved. I was even able to eat a normal diet with no exclusions. However, over the last week, the symptoms have returned. I am so frustrated with not being able to eat and having no solution. Do you have any thoughts on what could be causing my symptoms and what my next steps should be? Thank you so much! Regards, Melissa - Dr. Cabral, As an addition to my previous submitted question, I am also experiencing severe itching with no rash on my breasts and upper back. My skin entirely is very dry with patches of scaly skin and even though I drink lots of water and use lotions, my skin is still very itchy, dry, dehydrated and uncomfortable. When I itch, I do create very deep cuts which cause a lot of scarring. The itching is internal and often times I wake up with severe attacks where I feel as though I want to remove whatever body part is causing such intense itching - it is very painful. This has occurred over the last 20 years of my life, beginning when I was 18 years old. I have had bloodwork done looking at my liver, thyroid, iron -all of which were normal except iron - I did have low iron stores but after iron infusions, my levels are back up and I am still itching. I have food allergy tests done which have indicated no food allergy. I am severely allergic to dust mites. I have had these bouts with itching after each of my pregnancies (3 total all c-sections) - the other times they have occurred have been random. The only other connection I can make is that the first instance occurred a couple of months after I had my wisdom teeth removed and this last time occurred a couple of months after a colonoscopy, so could it possibly be related to surgery/procedures? Or maybe hormones? Thank you once again for any information you can provide. Regards, Melissa Lizzie: Hi D. Stephen Cabral, I have recently felt pain in my right knee for the past couple weeks. It hurts to fully extend and just feels "off." I eat very well, mostly organic veggies, coffee in am, nothing crazy, not sure what this could be from. I work out 4x a week yoga to spinning to bootcamps. Can inflammation travel? I do also have very week ankles (kill during yoga in 1 leg poses) and wonder if this is connected? I am still working out and trying to ignore this subtle pain. Even in a plank it hurts to fully straighten my right leg.... but I am forcing it thinking it will clear up on its own. Come to think of it, I also have pain, soreness in my left shoulder, but also continue to work out with light weights during shoulder exercises. I am 32. 120 lbs. Fit. Try my best to do it all right. Please help!! Thank you. Hayley: Hi Dr. Cabral- What is your opinion on stabilized lignite extract supplements? It is purported to tighten up a leaky gut, but I'm not clear on if this product is a necessary addition to my diet. Thanks for all the work you do-- your podcast is awesome! Leilani: Dear Dr Cabral, Thank you for all your podcasts and all the information you provide! It is very much enjoyed and appreciated. I have a dental question - I need 4 crowns (maxillary central & lateral incisors) and would like to know what material you recommend as safe to have inside the mouth. I find all the information out there overwhelming and confusing and would like to finally have the work done but I want to feel confident that I'm getting the safest and most bio-compatible options available. I apologise if this has already been covered in an earlier podcast - I did a quick search but nothing came up. Thank you for your time & assistance. Kind Regards, Leilani Ann: What is your recommendation for the most safest and healthiest cutting boards. There are so many to choose from (bamboo, plastic, wood, etc) Thanks! Ashley: Hi Dr. Cabral, I seem to eat all of the time, but never really feel full or satiated. I'm not overweight, and I choose healthy real foods. But it seems I could literally eat all day long. What causes this? Thanks! I hope you enjoyed today's Q&A and all the tips along the way! - - - Show
Ep 414414: Autophagy & Fasting, Food Based Vitamins, Antibiotic Side Effects, Hand Washing, Copper IUD, Head Pain (HouseCall)
Hello and thank you for tuning into this weekend's #HouseCall Q & A show! Here are today's amazing community questions! Brittany: Hi Dr. Cabral! I am getting ready to start your 7 day Dr. Cabral Detox and I was wondering: Do the limited calories on days 1 and 2 of the detox (200 calories each day) still allow for autophagy? I've read that you have to eliminate calories entirely for a period of time for autophagy to engage; is this true? I am just wondering if this detox can also serve as an intermittent fast, or if I need to incorporate a water only fast separately from the detox at a later date for maximum health results long term. Many thanks! - Brittany Randa: Hello Was wondering if you thought new chapter vitamins are good quality in your opinion. Also could you tell me what macro breakdown you suggest to someone who wants to maintain there weight and what macro breakdown (if different) for someone who has 20 pounds to lose. Thanks -love your podcast Michele L: Hi Dr. Cabral, Hope you are well. I love the podcast! I had a few questions: 1. What are your thoughts about strep throat and using antibiotics to treat it? My understanding is that antibiotics are prescribed because of possible serious side effects, but wondering if it is necessary? I have one friend whose daughter has a heart problem so she is grateful for them and another friend who has a perfectly healthy daughter, who on the last day of taking the 10 day course ended up with a severe reaction that the doctors believe is serum sickness and is currently in the hospital covered in an awful rash, swollen and having a hard time breathing. They don't really know how to make her better. I know that antibiotics should only be used for bacterial infections, so is that what strep is? 2. Is there anything you can do to protect your child from a serious side effect like the one that happened to my friend's child? 3. The reason I ask is that my daughter is suspected to be allergic to penicillin - she got a red bumpy rash when she had strep 3 years ago after taking amoxicillin that they didn't think was scarlet fever and determined she likely had an allergic reaction. However, they prescribe Keflex for her which is in the same class as penicillin so it makes me worry that she could have a serious reaction to this antibiotic. Any advice on how to manage antibiotics when they are necessary? When talking with the doctors anything specific I should be asking? I wonder if there is a minimum dose that could be prescribed and a shorter duration that would be as effective and perhaps the doctors go with the strongest dosage? I know that the doctors wrongly prescribed antibiotics for my child 4 times prior to her allergic reaction but they made me so worried she needed them when she didn't for very mild ear infections. Very hard to know when to follow along and when to just do what feels right to me. Thoughts? Thanks! Michelle: Hi Dr. Cabral - thanks for a great podcast. What are your thoughts on hand sanitizers? Do you think it is better to use them than eat with dirty hands if there is no place to wash your hands or are you better off allowing some germs to be there? I know someone who never asks her kids to wash (they don't even wash after going to the bathroom) and the kids are incredibly healthy and never seem to get sick. I do believe in hand washing before eating and definitely after using the bathroom (that to me is basic hygiene) but I am guilty of having my child over washing. I also ask my child to wash when she gets home from school. She was a preemie which made me hyper vigilant about her health. I want to get to a "normal" state around this but don't know what the right balance is and how to achieve it? Thanks! Natalie: Hi Dr. Cabral! I love your podcast. Thank you so much for all the info you share. I'm wondering what form of female contraception you recommend to your patients. My research has led me to believe that the most "natural"/least disruptive form is a copper IUD. What do you think? Have you come across any adverse effects to the copper IUD? Thank you!!!! Nat MariEllen: Hi Stephen, I listen to all of your podcasts and am thankful you share such useful information with all of us. I have had a constant problem with headaches since I got my wisdom teeth out when I was 17/18 years old. I've been told it has nothing to do with it, it's just a coincidence. I have tried an awful lot of things that have been costly as well as time consuming for me. Sometimes, I want to give up.. But I have already come this far in trying to figure out what is going on with me. I have been to so many doctor appointments, had a brain scan, been on multiple medicines to try to help ease the pain ( which I don't fully agree being on and am no longer taking anything), been fitted for an NTI appliance since I do grind and clench my teeth at night, done acupuncture, tried yoga.... It is a constant pulsating and starts every morning when I wake up. I have celiacs disease,
Ep 413413: My Top 10 Supplements (FR)
Back on episode 354 I brought you the "Top 15 Nutritional Supplements" Prescribed by Functional Medicine Doctors and health practitioners... It was one of our most popular shows and although I agree with the vast majority of those supplements and use them all in my practice, I did feel it was missing something... Many of those products are great to relieve symptoms, but I'm more interested in healing at a deeper level, which is why today I want to share with you a few nutritional supplements you can use daily to rebalance your body for optimal health & well-being! Ep 412412: 7 Reasons to Exercise Other Than Looking Good (TT)
Right now I want to share with you the massive benefits you get from making exercise a part of your weekly routine... Remember, just like good nutrition the results you get are cumulative and are best seen overtime. Now I know that you want those same results yesterday, but at the same time I'd prefer you keep them for life ; ) Plus, many of these benefits carry over to improving your mood, hormones, brain, function and other internal mechanisms you can't physically see a change in... Ep 411411: Transitioning Off of Low Carb Diets (WW)
Low carb diets work. There's no doubt about that and the research shows that it helps with inflammation, regulating blood sugar, lowering insulin, and losing weight... What you don't hear though is that low carb diets don't work forever... And that's the issue. Most diets will work in the short-term, but what you really need to be successful and to skip the inevitable frustration is a long-term plan... So while going low-carb for up to 12 weeks can work, you need to know what to do after that in order to keep your thyroid, adrenals, mood, energy, and metabolism strong after that point... Tune into today's #CabralConcept 411 for all the details on how to transition off of low carb diets for long term health & body transformation goals - Enjoy the show! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/411 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
410: The 3 Triggers for Disease (TWT)
It seems like we're creating names for as many diseases as there are people on this planet... This is unfortunate because each "disease" is then matched up with a medication. And often times, the medication is for life and the patient is given no hope of recovery... But there is an alternative. That alternative is the belief (and fact) that what we call a chronic health condition is nothing more than a set of symptoms that rise to the surface... In Natural Medicine, we know that the symptoms are not the disease, but represent "dis-ease" within the body. Therefore, the only way to ever fully get well again and reverse any health condition you may suffer from is to find the underlying root causes... Tune into today's #CabralConcept 41o to find the 3 triggers for disease. Once you know those triggers you will then be able to work backwards to finally heal - Enjoy the show! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/410 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
409: How to Open Your Mind to A Better Life (MM)
Before you ever get healthy, lose the weight, or enjoy the success in life you've been secretly wishing for, you must begin where every success story has ever started... And that place resides in your mind. You can have the best plan, the greatest guru, or the most caring coach, but it is your belief system that will ultimately carry you through to the finish line... In my practice, I've seen cancer and mystery illness patients be given no hope by conventional medicine only to walk away from their past lives of sickness and disease and enter a life of health and happiness... If you have a goal, or want more for life, I urge you to build the proper foundation for your dreams by learning how to open your mind to a better life - Tune into today's #CabralConcept 409 for the details. Ep 408408: China Study, Probiotic Recommendation, Parasite vs. Candida, Cellular Detox, Best Food Sensitivity Test (HouseCall)
Welcome back to our 2nd Cabral #HouseCall of the weekend! We have 5 more amazing community questions, so let's get right into them: Cassi: Hi Dr. Cabral - thank you so, so much for providing all the knowledge and information you share with is and most of all for free. It is so inspiring to see a person do something for the better of society and not only to make a "quick buck." My question is regarding the book The China Study. I know you reviewed this a long time ago, but can't find which episode and was wondering if you could re-review. I'm currently reading the book and just want to know what you think and if every study in it seems trustworthy, etc. Thank you! Aleks: Hi! I was wondering if you had a good probiotic recommendation on the market? I'm a student and need to be smart about my purchases :) Taylor: Hi Dr. Cabral, I so enjoy your show-it fuels my passion for continuing healing for my body. Through testing it has been shown that my body has the need for Mercury detox, I hve mineral difecency, parasites, and Candida overgrowth. I feel unsure of what would be the first thing to go after and then what would be next and so on. I know that sometimes going after one of these things before the other could be pointless because I am assuming there is an order. Can you help? Thanks! Taylor John: Hi Stephen. I regularly listen to a podcast called the Ben Greenfield podcast, where Ben interviews experts, doctors, etc. He recently brought on a top detox expert named Dr P. Doctor P talked about most detoxes being ineffective and how you have to detox the cell in order to have a true detox. Jordan: Hey Stephen. I had a question about food allergy testing. I've heard from various doctors, like Chris Kresser and others, who believe Cyrex Labs uses the best method for testing for food allergies. I am just wondering if you've heard of Cyrex Labs and your personal opinion on it. Thank-you Thank you for tuning into this weekend's HouseCalls and I look forward to speaking with you tomorrow on the Mindset & Motivation Monday #CabralConcept show! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/408 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
Ep 407407: Supplement Decision Overwhelm, Compliance, Micronutrient Testing, Healthy Bread? (HouseCall)
Dawn: As a consumer, every podcast I listen to, I get intrigued by another vitamin? then I think I should add to my diet? then I don't know if I'm taking too much stuff? Like, I need more iron, zinc and magnesium. I'm 47, getting older, skin and hair changing - that freaks me out. So, I want lots of Biotin, Iron, Zinc - what about fish oil? What can I do to be looking younger longer or at least try? I know this is same for so many people - you get caught in all the marketing hype and it plays on your emotions. Dr. Cara: Hi Dr. Cabral, I wanted to let you know i really appreciate all the continuing education you're doing for patients and doctors alike. I feel like I learn more from your podcast than I have attending post doctoral seminars! My question is how do you get patients to comply with your protocols? In my practice I seem to have difficulty with patients following the food and supplement recommendations. Any advice would be appreciated and thank you in advance! Maura: What do you think about micronutrient testing and cardiometobolic testing? My naturopath offered these options to me as well as just some of the basic blood work. Do you recommend this as a good wellness strategy? I did not see it as an option on your website but it is through spectracell. Renessa: Gday! thankyou so much for all your information, i am so happy i have found your podcasts. I'm just wondering if you would recommend bread at all? If a certain type is best, eg. Organic Whole Rye bread? Is organic bread with simple ingredients healthy? Thanks! God bless. It's easy to confuse the energy surge that comes along with caffeine consumption as something that's beneficial or good for us... Ep 402402: Why Failing Forward is the Answer You've Been Searching For (MM)
With goals come expectations. But, these expectations may or may not be based in reality... For some reason we've been conditioned in our Western vision of reality that achieving our goals is supposed to be a straight forward shot to success... The problem is that the real world isn't set up this way, and as a result we become frustrated due to an incongruence with our preconceived thoughts... The solution is to realize that true happiness does not in fact lie in the attainment of anything, but rather in the process itself and how we should view that process... Tune into today's #CabralConcept 402 to better understand why failure and failing forward is the answer you've been searching for - Enjoy the show! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/402 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
BONUS REPLAY: Flush Inflammation from Your Body!
Every few weeks I'll be adding a BONUS REPLAY show from a previous podcast that was voted by our listeners as one of their favorites (by number of downloads)! The bonus replay will never replace a weekend Cabral HouseCall, but is added as an additional podcast... If you've already listened in to this show I highly recommend a 2nd listen to reinforce what you've already learned and possibly even pick up another tip or two you may have missed! Here is today's show: How to Flush Inflammation from Your Body! Most people view inflammation as something bad, but I have a much different view of it… The media has made inflammation out to be the bad guy and something that is supposed to be wiped out through pharmaceutical drugs or nutritional supplements… However, what they haven't told you is that inflammation is actually a warning sign of some type of tissue trauma that has happened in the body… This means that if you simply try to mask the symptoms of inflammation you are still not treating the hidden root cause of the actual health issue… Tune in to today's CabralConcept 332 to find out how do naturally flush inflammation from your body while healing from the inside out at the same time – Enjoy the show! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/332 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
Ep 401401: Noise & Sleep App Recommendation, Muscle Testing, Overdoing Daily Exercise? (HouseCall)
Thank you for coming back to tune into our 2nd day of the weekend Cabral HouseCalls! We have another amazing 3 questions today and here they are: Chad: Hi Dr. Cabral, You indicated you live in the downtown area of a major city. I do as well. Do you have any issues with nighttime traffic noise? If so, what do you use to mitigate its impact on your sleep? I've tried earplugs and sound machines, but am wondering if you have any better solutions. Cheryl: Hi, Dr. Cabral. First, I'd like to express my gratitude to you for providing such solid and thought-provoking advice! I've learned so much and have made it a practice to listen to your podcast every day. Now, for my question...have you ever heard of a practice called "muscle testing"? My sister-in-law is going to a naturopath who performs this kind of examination in order to tell her which foods she may be sensitive to in addition to supplements he recommends to her. He offers this service in person as well as through Skype. It sounds intriguing but is a totally foreign concept to me and I thought, perhaps, based on your interest in health disciplines throughout the world that, you may have heard of it. Thanks so much for your time and I look forward to your thoughtful response. Cheryl Cassidy: Thank you thank you thank you for putting out this daily podcast I've learned so much! I have a quick question on your kettlebell workout challenge. You mention doing the swings everyday - is this okay to do? I know you've mentioned in the past that you don't believe in working out everyday… I hope you enjoyed today's Q&A and all the tips along the way! - - - Show Notes Recommendations & Links: http://StephenCabral.com/401 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral

Welcome back to the weekend edition of the #CabralConcept where I answer our community's questions! We have bunch of #HouseCalls to get to today and they cover some amazing questions across the board... I can't wait to share those answers with you now! Karen: My mother has had diarrhea for 14 months. She has struggled with this off and on for ten years but this is the worst yet. In the past she has taken antibiotics but it always comes back. She has lost a lot of weight and I believe is nutritionally deficient. She has tried omitting dairy, gluten, eggs, and other food items but nothing seems to make a big difference. Oddly, fresh vegetables seem to make it worse. She takes Ammodium AD every single day to be able to leave the house. Any suggestions? Michelle: Hello again Dr. Cabral. You keep mentioning your book in your podcasts. Can you give us a date when we might expect to see it and will you be doing a "crowd sourcing" campaign so we can preorder it to help you out? I'm not sure if crowd sourcing is the term I'm looking for but I think you probably will get my drift! ;-) Thanks again for all of your time, energy and boundless information you help so many of us with. Michelle Mouxios: Found out about you from Instagram!! I am a 21year old student and I really find your podcasts very helpful!! So I have been vegan for 13 months now ( in the beginning vegetarian) ! The #1 excuse for not working out is a "lack of time," but I believe that we all make time for what we see as a priority in our life... Right now, "intermittent fasting" has become one of the most popular diet trends in the health & fitness industry... Ep 395395: How To Do What You Don't Want To in Order to Get Ahead (MM)
Goals are a funny thing. We all have them and we want to strive for more out of life, but we don't always want to do the work required to get there... Part of it is that we can get too comfortable with where we are right now even if it's not a good place. The reason is that it's become routine and although not where we want to be we at least know this familiar ground... And let's face it, to get to that next level in life we're going to have to change. Something needs to be different in order to get a different result... A lot of the time too, many of us know what needs to be done to make that change to get that new result, but we're not always willing to make that trade. Ep 394394: Continuing Ed, Bruising, Gum Recession, Stomach Fat, Low Sex Drive (HouseCall)
I hope you enjoyed yesterday's 1st edition of the weekend Cabral #HouseCalls! Today, we have 3 more community questions so let's get started: Deborah: Dr. Stephen Cabral, You (and your team) inspire me and thank you for staying inspired so you can continue to give so freely to people. I'm interested in the wholistic functional medicine approach. I want to begin pursuing foundational training to be able to offer care to others in need. I've looked at the RD route but want an education that incorporates prescribing methods of healing found naturally in the earth primarily through nutrition [similar to a naturopathic doctor but I don't want to become a doctor]. Do you know which field(s) of medicine would best help me do that? Side question: I get bruises easily when I bump into things. Do you know a natural remedy to heal bruises effectively? Btw tried your Detox for the first time..twas grand :) Melissa: Hi Dr. Cabral - first of all thank you so much for everything you do! My question is this: my husband (age 29) has gum recession (lower front teeth and it's also beginning on his upper front teeth) that is progressively getting worse. He had a graft done about 5 years ago and it was semi-successful and he maintained that for about 3 years until he had his teeth cleaned and for whatever reason the hygienist had to clean pretty aggressively near the gum line. Ever since that time he has watched it worsen. His dental hygiene is great which is why this is so disappointing because he takes better care of his teeth than anyone I know. Right now he is oil pulling with coconut oil and some oregano oil. Is there anything he can do? Through my own research I've read about supplementing with CoQ10 and Vitamin C. He would prefer not to have another surgery. Thanks! Alice: Hi, I have 2 girls under the age of 4 - I am healthy, eat well, supplement well, green powder etc. I exercise 4/5 days a week, fairly active during the day - always hit my 10k steps. I am having a few problems post babies - 1. stomach fat- all my body fat seems to be here and quite stubborn. I am toned everywhere else and these last 7 pounds seem to be all on my tummy- can you help? I have done the IGG food tests and eliminated. 2. my sex drive since having my 2nd child has gone! obviously i have less time, working, being a mum and cooking from scratch, gym etc but i'd really like to connect again with my husband. any advice would be fabulous - thank you for all your help - you are great. I hope you enjoyed today's Q&A and all the tips added in along the way! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/394 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
Ep 393393: FM Testing, NADH Energy Pill, 2-3 Day Fasting, Can't Concentrate (HouseCall)
The weekend Cabral #HouseCalls are back and we have some amazing questions lined up for today and tomorrow! Here is today's community Q&A: Sharlona: I am new to your site and plan and have downloaded the welcome package. I am now trying to access the Functional Medicine Testing and receiving the following message: 404 Error We're sorry but the page you're looking for has gone missing… we'll look for it, but in the mean time please use the search bar above to type in a keyword for what you are looking for. Is there another way I can access this? Thank you for your time. I am very interested in your program. CC: Hi Stephen, I recently read about Professor Birkmayer NADH and it's effectiveness for energy. I was interested in this for adrenal support (in addition to other herbs I am taking and of course the Cabral detox) but wondered if NADH is really worth the excessively high price point? Massively value your podcasts, learned so much - many thanks! Anna: Hi Dr Cabral! I am a healthy, 35 year old but recently have been experiencing fatigue issues and slight weight gain. :-( I do have a great deal of life stress, but I work out, eat a very clean diet and practice meditation/prayer - still deeply struggling with new aging concerns and fatigue. Recently a friend talked to me about coffee enemas and fasting. What is your take on regular 2-3 day fasting? How about coffee enemas? What is your opinion there? By the way, thank you for making your expertise available! Best, Anna Tom: Hello Dr. Cabral, first of all I'd like to start by saying how thankful I am to have found this website and listen to your podcasts on a daily basis. I think what you're doing is such an amazing service and I thank you! My question is: I can never seem to get through a book at the speed most people do. And when I'm reading I often have to reread some paragraphs or sentences because my mind drifts off, even though I'm 100% interested in the book I'm reading. Wondering if you can shed some light on this for me. 2. Why can't I concentrate when I'm reading and need to reread paragraphs because I didn't grasp it the first time.Thank you. On this week's #FridayReview I am bringing some of the latest research on nutritional supplements (Orthomolecular Medicine) and specifically why you need to keep vitamin K in your daily regimen... Ep 387387: Coconut Water, Caffeine in Supplements, Epsom Salt, Pet Allergies, Hip Pain, Hive Outbreaks (HouseCall)
We're back with our 2nd Cabral #HouseCall of the weekend! I really enjoyed answering yesterday's questions and looking forward to tackling today's Q&A... So let's get started! Tracy: Hi Doctor Cabral. Thank you thank you for all the info. I was wondering how you feel about consuming coconut water daily. I try and drink a 16oz bottle of organic harmless harvest coconut water every day (supposedly this brand is closest to the real thing and I truly enjoy it) 1. Does this count towards my daily water intake? 2. is it too much sugar at 28g, but since it is natural sugar I feel it is ok? 3. are there many benefits of drinking quality coconut water? Background, I do suffer from SIBO and many other intestinal and skin issues. Thank you. Jenn: Hi there! I had also sent this email to the [email protected] address too and never got a response. I am very interested in trying out the daily shake, but I need to make sure there is no caffeine, even green tea, in the product. My body is very sensitive to it and I have a hard time tolerating it at all. I hope to hear from you soon so I can make my purchase! Lisa: Hi Dr. Cabral, I take Epsom salt baths 3 times a week using Dr. Teals Epsom salts unscented. I took you up on your recommendation of using San Francisco Salt Co Epsom salts and bought a gigantic bag of it. Unfortunately the two times I used it I got a huge headache about 2-4 hours later. I would love to know why that is. I hate that I stare at this beautiful big bag of salt I can't seem to tolerate. Btw, I use about 1 -1.5 cups of salt in the bath water. Thanks much! Lisa Cynthia: Can you please do a podcast on silent reflux. I was just diagnosed and I'm looking for a natural cure to help me with my symptoms. Thank you… Max: Hi Dr. Cabral! I've been listening to your podcast since last summer and it's been a great source of information. I've made many changes to my habits after listening to your podcasts, including the detox, and having smoothies every morning. It's definitely improved my daily life! Thank you for your work! My question to you now is about asthma and pet allergies. I was diagnosed with asthma at 32 y/o. After allergy tests, I was told I'm highly allergic to pet dander (dogs, cats) and common house dust mite. After a stern chat from my Dr., I found new homes for my cats, got rid of rugs and heavy fabrics, and "allergen proofed" my house. It's been 6-7 years of clean breathing with no asthma attacks; the only exceptions when visiting households with pets, and being exposed to them for over 3-4 hours, or overnight stays (and I'd take medication like Allegra and or albuterol pump in these occasions). Interestingly enough, the asthma/allergic reaction varies depending on the breed of dogs I'm exposed to (for example, hardly any reaction to a yorkie-terrier, but then get short of breath near a bulldog). My question is - should I never consider getting a pet again? Or are there any non-medication alternatives to alleviate these allergic reactions so I could potentially get a pet? Again, thank you for your work and time. Max Lindsey: Hi, I've spent most of the winter mixing interval sessions on the treadmill and with weight sessions I have sore shin/ thigh and hip pain on one side; possible Sacroiliac joint? It's effecting my training now. I've changed shoes, rested a few days, massage etc but not helping. I will get back outside on the road when the weather is better but in the meantime what can I do? Is it the treadmill impact? Thanks for your fabulous podcast and help x Jeni: Hi Dr. Cabral! Words cannot describe how much you have changed mine and my family's health since I have discovered your podcasts! Thank you! I have asked questions before regarding my husband and children's health issues (to which your advice worked 100% on each question), but have always put my health issues off for another time. I am ready to start feeling better as well! My story is a little more complicated than theirs. My main symptoms are hives (usually around my joints but also on any part of my limbs) and joint pain. The hives also come on any time of day or night, but really appear after I have had any type of contact on my skin. (Example: when I go skiing, my boots rub in certain places on my feet. My ankles and feet are super swollen with hives for the rest of the evening.) Most Dr.'s have automatically chalked it up to a food intolerance and Rheumatoid Arthritis. I have taken the steps from a medical doctor to do allergy tests for food, but all have come back negative. Let me also say, they did NOT do a food sensitivity test. I have done the Whole 30 program to help me eliminate foods but in doing, the hives and severe joint pain have NOT gone away. I am in my mid 30s and this has started just a few years ago, but has gotten progressively worse and is starting to affect my life. Does this sound like a classic case of Rheumatoid Arthritis to you, and if so, what should my next step be? I don't love the idea of t
Ep 386386: Best Test, Facial Scars, Thyroid Supplements, Female Hormones, Parasites, Long Distance Consults (HouseCall)
I'm really looking forward to today's Cabral #HouseCall! We have so many amazing questions and I think the answers may even surprise you in some cases... Let's get started! Nikki: What is the best test for Optimal Health? Lizzie: 2 questions for the wonderful doctor cabral: 1.What are you feelings on castor oil packs for detoxing? How do you do this simply? Life is already so busy, I was thinking I could do this at the same time as a coffee enema that I do once a week now. Good idea? Does this help with hormone issues/ovarian cysts? 2. What is the #1 oil for facial scars, I am trying to make my own acne serum for my face, back and arms, I did a lot of picking, and now need to eradicate the scarring that is so awful. Thank you! Chloe: Hi Dr Cabral, thanks for your podcast on adrenal thyroid, looking forward to more. So I have started on a journey to repair my adrenals over the past month as much as possible using adaptogenic herbs (Gaia herbs) etc and just started taking natural thyroid support (also Gaia herbs) the other day, the last few days however, almost since taking the thyroid supplement, I have noticed I have been very moody and negative. I am trying to minimize stress to help adrenals but even the smallest thing will tick me off! I haven't touched birth control for almost 4 yrs. I am due a period but it is late (36 days), I am definitely not pregnant. I am not sure if it's just really bad PMS or if it could be some kind of adjustment to my hormones rebalancing - does this happen? I was wondering how long approximately it may take for this "adjustment" or the hormonal state to return to normal? Love this community, thanks and very much appreciated Maura: Everyone talks about out of balance hormones and how they ruin everything but no one gives clear direction on what to do to fix them. Can you help with that? Ashley: Hi Dr. Cabral, I recently got tested and found out I have a parasite AND a candida overgrowth - what do you recommend I work on healing first? Thanks for your help! Frank: Thank you very much for responding to my instagram question about finding a Naturopathic today. Since I live in NY, I'm not sure I could find a doctor that does the things you do. I will check the IFM.org website and hope for the best. Believe me, I would love to see you, but since it is about a 5 hour trip, it doesnt look plausible. Thank you again for your help, your podcasts and overall great information. Blessings to you and yours. Given the fact that the air we breathe is literally the most important thing to our health I always find it odd that we allow so many chemicals to float around unseen in the atmosphere around us... We've all been led to believe that we crave certain foods because those are just our taste bud's preferences, but the truth lies a lot deeper than that... While it is true that people prefer certain foods over others, sometimes it's not because of a taste preference, but instead due to a physiological need of your body. Tune into today's #CabralConcept 383 to discover what your food cravings really mean and what you should do about it - Enjoy the show! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/383 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
Ep 382382: Difference Between Adrenal Fatigue vs. Low Thyroid Symptoms (TWT)
In my practice I see people suffering from both adrenal fatigue and low thyroid issues, but often times they may have been previously diagnosed incorrectly... Today, what I'd like to do is share with you the specific "traits" of how adrenal fatigue differs from low thyroid even though many of the symptoms appear very similar... For example, someone with adrenal or chronic fatigue can be tired all day, but then have difficulty sleeping. Whereas, someone with low thyroid will be tired most of the day, but still have no problem sleeping at night as well... Tune into today's #CabralConcept 382 for more details, as well as a specific test you can run to know for sure which one it is that you may be suffering from - Enjoy the show! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/382 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
Ep 381381: Increase Happiness by Reframing Expectations (MM)
I'm as guilty as anyone when it comes to wanting to achieve my goals overnight... However, the universe doesn't seem to work that way, and because of this it can sometimes create a lot of anxiety, impatience, frustration, and feelings of being overwhelmed... The good news is you will achieve your goals if you simply learn how to reframe your expectations while going about your plan a little differently. Ep 380380: HypoThyroid, Wart Cure, Picky Eater, Candida Diet, Metal in Body (HouseCall)
Thanks for tuning back into our 2nd Cabral #HouseCall of the weekend! I think you're really going to enjoy today's community Q&A so let's get started! Anon: Hi Dr. Cabral! I love your podcast. I have learned so much from you. I believe I have mild symptoms of: leaky gut, hypothyroidism, candida and food sensitivities (for which I am following a protocol through my naturopath – I am avoiding my sensitivities, cooking mostly organic low-glycemic carbs, ethical meat, good quality fats My bloating has reduced and energy is better, but I still have the following which started at 17 (when I started university) and now I am 27: dark circles under my eyes, cold hands and feet (poor circulation), hair and eyelashes thinning, weakening and falling out (hair has also been turning gray), hard to lose fat and cellulite overall, but predominantly in lower body (I feel as though I hold on to water even in my calves). I am a female, of South Asian descent, 5'3 and weigh 120 pounds approximately, live in Canada and have mid-level stress. I am not sure what else to do. I want to ask for any tips and am just wondering what else I can do because I feel that I put in so much effort and still do not feel motivated to do my best in life (mood instability – sometimes down/depressed) and do not feel comfortable in a bathing suit... Thank you! Jenn: Hi Dr. Cabral! I am so glad I found you on Instagram! I listen to the podcast regularly and value the information you share. What an honor it would be to meet with you one day. Thank you for your passion! There are so many questions that I want to ask, but I have narrowed it down to one! I have had a planter's wart on my foot for almost 20 years. I have tried many methods of treating it and nothing has worked. I have had it frozen, cut out, special topical treatments, apple cider vinegar, and coconut oil mixed with tea tree oil to name a few. It is slowly spreading and at times painful. Not only is it uncomfortable, but I find it a bit embarrassing as well. I constantly keep duct tape on it at all times. Any thoughts? I am a believer that we can heal most things life throws at us if we are addressing the right areas of our health and wellness. Thank you for any insight into this annoying issue. (294) Kevin: Dr Cabral, You have helped my wife and I with so many things for ourselves...and now we seek guidance for our 8 year old son. He has developed into a moderately selective eater. He eats relatively healthy, for the most part, but only has about 3-6 foods in his arsenal at a time that he'll even consider...and almost never tries new things. I've read quite a bit about this...and there are a lot of opinions ranging from "make one meal then let him decide if he eats or not" to "just make him what he wants and not worry about". Sure would value your thoughts on this. Appreciate everything you do. - Kevin Jenn: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thanks so much for your podcast, I love listening to it everyday! I am starting the Bacterial and Candida cleanse protocol soon, and as I look through the meal plan I am beginning to become a little concerned I might get hungry throughout the day. I have an ectomoprh body type and typically have a few snacks during the day between meals. I am on my feet during the day and like to workout after work. I do not want to disrupt the cleanse process so I wanted to ask before I started in case I feel the need to snack. Do you have any suggestions for what type of snacks I could have or if I could bulk up the meals with a certain group? Would it be more harmful to increase a certain recommended food group? My last question: I know they are not on the list so just double checking if you would approve of chia seeds, flax seeds, salmon, coconut oil for cooking or any type of tea? Thanks so much for everything you do! I am extremely excited to commit to this protocol and get rid of all my Candida and Bacterial dysbiosis symptoms! Best, Jenn Vivian: Hello, Dr. Cabral, THANK YOU so much for all that you do - don't know how you do it all, but perhaps one day you'll offer a podcast on your time management skills! LOL! Was curious if you could comment on biopsy clips. My allopathic doctors shot several titanium clips into me, to mark several masses located in the armpit area. The masses have all shrunk (I have since switched over to a completely holistic route, and have never felt better), but I can still see and feel small bumps, which I believe are the biopsy clips themselves. My questions: (1) Since the masses have shrunk, what exactly are the clips attached to? I've documented their locations via thermography, and at least one seems to have moved about an inch in the last 3 months. (2) What would be the safest way to have them removed? (The more research I do, the more I'm convinced I'm far better off having nothing foreign introduced into my body.) Thanks a million!
Ep 379379: Anti-Aging, Health Ins., Yeast Infection, Vegan Health, Kid's Multi, Health Jobs (HouseCall)
It's that time again and that means we're back with another #HouseCall weekend! On today's show we answer our community's questions on: Rebekah: Are Natural health and your consultations and labs covered by regular medical insurance? How do people pay for services in your practice? Amanda: I have been doing well GI wise, no bloating gas cramps or diarrhea. However I believe i have had a yeast infection for about a week now I figured it may just go away but it hasnt. I also have eczema popping up on my right hand where it usually is. Haven't had it since i started workig with you really so I thought that these 2 random symptoms were odd. How can I get rid of my yeast infection naturally? Shahna: Love the podcast and all of the help. Stay healthy. Quick question: is there anything unhealthy or dangerous about a plant based, vegan menu? Some sources/critics claim it is lacking in important nutrients, etc. and is thus harmful to have a diet that does not include meat at least occuasionally. Thank you Alma: Hi Dr. Cabral, I love listening to your podcast & how they're so informative. You recently mentioned in a house call that it'd be a good idea giving kids a good multi vitamin. I was wondering if you could recommend any specific brands?? I've been searching for one for some time now & honestly get overwhelmed with all the variety out there. Thanks so much for your feed back! Caitlin: Hi, I am a Registered Dietitian and have been following the functional medicine philosophy and community for awhile now. This approach to disease prevention and healing has given me the faith I was beginning to lack from working as an RD in conventional roles. I currently am working in the Boston area but am eager to find a setting in which I can utilize my knowledge and expand my skills using a functional approach. Do you have any suggestions for how to begin transitioning into Functional Medicine from a traditional RD setting? I would greatly appreciate any insight you have. Thank you for all of your great work within this amazing and inspiring community of professionals!
