Kelly Schmidt - from Tech and Life Sciences to Coach and Consultant - Accelerator Member Profile
In today’s episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Kelly Schmidt. Kelly is a coach and consultant with 25 years in the corporate space, mostly in life sciences and technology. As she puts it, “I love to build cool things, but I started to find I really liked it better when people use those cool things.” Kelly shares her journey from tech professional to executive coach, and how her natural leadership style—“providing space for people to get things clear”—led her to realise she’d been coaching long before she had the language for it. We talk about building teams, navigating gnarly transformations, and making the leap into coaching after being laid off. Kelly’s story is a powerful example of “getting really comfortable figuring out what I wanted” instead of following the “shoulds.” In this episode, you’ll hear: ✅ How Kelly transitioned from 25 years in corporate life sciences and IT into coaching and consulting ✅ Why her natural style of holding space and asking questions shaped her leadership and coaching approach ✅ What helped her shift from “shoulds” to “wants” when deciding what to do after being laid off ✅ The mix of consulting, coaching, and facilitation she now uses to support leaders through change ✅ Her journey with visibility and how she approaches LinkedIn and content creation with intention ✅ Why she’s found the Corporate to Coach Accelerator so valuable—especially the group coaching and accountability “It’s so rich... there's always something new going on. I didn't expect to get nearly as much out of the group coaching calls. Just being able to say out loud, what's my win and what's my priority—that helps me stay on track.” Connect with Kelly: 💼 Find Kelly Schmidt on LinkedIn 💬 Want to work with her? In today’s episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Denise Duffield-Thomas. Denise is a money mindset mentor, speaker, author, and the creator of Money Bootcamp—and I was beyond thrilled to have her on the show. Denise gets it. She is a money mentor, but she didn’t start out that way. Just like many coaching business owners she has had to do her own work. From housing commission kid on the Central Coast to building a global community helping women explore their relationship with money - she has a capital-S Story to tell. And because I can’t ever quite leave the coaching to the side, we get deep. Including talking about how your childhood money stories might still be running the show, and why pricing is never just about the numbers. If you’ve ever felt uncomfortable talking about money, struggled with setting your coaching rates, or wondered why it’s hard to keep money once you’ve made it—this one is for you. Why You Need a Sales Pipeline ASAP (Back to Basics Month!)
It’s the final week of Back to Basics month here on The Business of Executive Coaching—and we’re finishing strong with one of the most important (and often overlooked) foundations of your coaching business: your Sales Pipeline. This series has been all about those core pieces that help your business run smoothly—your ideal clients, your offers, your coaching bio, and now, your sales pipeline. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been coaching for a while and feel like some things just aren’t clicking, this episode will help you shore up a really important part of your business growth strategy. Now, to be clear, while building your sales pipeline is a foundational part of your business—but definitely not basic, as in simple. It’s more like eating your vegetables. Not always intuitive, especially for coaches who aren’t naturally drawn to business development, but absolutely essential. Here’s what I cover: What a sales pipeline is, and why you should definitely have one. How your pipeline helps you work with data rather than feelings. The role of a pipeline in making sure opportunities don’t fall through the cracks. Why it keeps you honest about what levels of activity are actually required to meet your revenue goals. How it helps you step out of negativity bias and be more strategic with your actions. I also share a method I teach for stepping backwards from your revenue target and building a granular view of your offers, pricing, outreach, and conversions—so you can be strategic about what’s working and what’s not. Inside the Corporate to Coach Accelerator, we go much deeper into how to build and track your sales pipeline, including what tools to use and what to track. If you’d like my support, or if you'd like to check whether the Accelerator is the right fit for you, I’d love to offer a no-commitment one-on-one coaching call. And if you book that call during April and decide to join, you’ll get a special offer just for podcast listeners: 13 months of membership for the price of 12. 📞 Book a call with me at elliescarf.com/bookacall. or message me on LinkedIn and mention the podcast. See you next time! Stay tuned- I’ve got an exciting interview lined up to kick off May!

If you're just starting out or want to strengthen the foundation of what you’ve already built, this series will support you to get clear, get focused, and get moving. This week’s episode is all about your coach bio—one of the most underrated but powerful tools in your business. Your bio might seem like a small detail, but it’s actually one of the most important assets in your business. Unlike your website—which people may or may not visit—your bio gets sent to people. It’s often the first impression someone has of you, especially in corporate settings. So it’s worth spending some time getting it right. Here’s what I cover: Why your bio does a different job than your website (and needs different language) What makes a good coach bio: clarity, relevance, and credibility Why your professional background matters—especially if you’re new to coaching How to make your experience feel current, even if it’s from a different field Using simple, human language (no coach jargon!) The role of social proof and how to use it without overdoing it When having more than one version of your bio is worth the effort This episode is packed with practical tips to help you write or refresh your coach bio so it clearly reflects who you are, what you do, and why people should work with you. If you’d like personal feedback on your bio, I’d love to help. You can book a strategy call with me—and if you mention this podcast, there’s a bonus for April. Here’s what I cover: The pressure to niche down – Why the advice to "narrow your niche" often creates more stress than clarity for many coaches. The danger of over-defining – How getting too specific can sometimes limit your opportunities rather than enhance them. A different approach to niching – Reframing the way you think about your ideal clients to allow for both focus and flexibility. In this episode of The Business of Executive Coaching, I explore the mindset shifts needed to show up confidently in your coaching business—especially when it comes to marketing, social media, and putting yourself out there. This episode breaks down how you can coach yourself to shift from self-criticism to a mindset that enhances your performance and confidence. Here’s what I cover: Identifying your ANTs – The common negative thoughts that hold coaches back from posting on LinkedIn, sharing photos, or reaching out to potential clients. Understanding the emotional impact – How these thoughts create fear, shame, and avoidance, leading to procrastination and inaction. The ANTS to PETs method – I share a simple but powerful technique from Suzy Green to replace automatic negative thoughts with performance-enhancing thoughts - check out her book The Positivity Prescription here for even more info Practical mindset shifts – Reframing your approach to visibility so that it aligns with your values, builds trust, and supports business growth. From ghosting to growth - the funds are in the follow up!
In this episode of The Business of Executive Coaching, I explore a critical yet often neglected area of business development—effective follow-up. Many coaches assume they’re following up enough, but in reality, missed opportunities often come down to the a lack of structured and strategic approach to follow up. The most successful coaches aren’t just great at delivering results—they’re also skilled at nurturing relationships and keeping conversations going. As the saying goes, “the funds are in the follow-up.” What you’ll learn in this episode: ✨ Why most coaches underestimate the power of follow-up – Breaking the myth that clients will always reach out when they’re ready. ✨ Common barriers to following up – Overcoming fears of being seen as pushy, managing rejection, and shifting your mindset around sales. ✨ How one follow-up led to a major client deal – A real-world example of how persistence turned a “no” into a long-term partnership. ✨ A simple, effective follow-up strategy – Timelines, messaging, and how to follow up in a way that feels natural and professional. ✨ How to stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed – Creating a system that removes the emotional burden from follow-up conversations. By the end of this episode, you’ll have a clear framework for improving your follow-up process, strengthening client relationships, and increasing your revenue without feeling salesy or intrusive. Finding your voice: Messaging, content and visibility with Rachel Barber
What a treat! In today’s episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Rachel Barber, a content marketing mentor and copywriter who helps coaches and impact-driven professionals amplify their voices on LinkedIn. Rachel’s journey into content marketing began unexpectedly after being made redundant from her corporate role. A good coaching business requires Inspiration AND Perspiration
In this episode of the Business of Executive Coaching podcast I explore a challenge many coaches face—balancing our need to feel excited and inspired about our businesses, and the need to get sh*t done (quite a lot of it!).. Too much inspiration without execution? Lack of progress.. Too much action without inspiration? Burnout, and a lack of joy in our achievements. After 17 years experience as an executive coach, I’ve seen how easy it is to get stuck at either extreme. This episode touches on balancing the two and creating a business that is both fulfilling and financially sustainable by ensuring inspiration and execution work together. Here’s what we cover: ✨ The Role of Inspiration and Action – Why both are essential for growth and long-term success. ✨ Common Pitfalls – Signs you may be focusing too much on one side and how to correct the course. ✨ Staying Inspired – Practical ways to keep energy and motivation high, from journaling to building a strong support network. ✨ Taking Meaningful Action – How to structure your efforts so they lead to real results. ✨ Inside My Own Strategy Review – What I’m prioritising in 2025 and how I’m simplifying my business focus. By the end of this episode, you’ll have a clear understanding of how to keep both inspiration and execution in sync, helping you build a business that aligns with your goals and values. Free Strategy Call Offer: I’m offering a free one-on-one strategy call for executive coaches looking to refine their business approach. In this session, we’ll clarify your key focus areas and outline a plan to move forward with confidence. 📅 Book your free strategy call here: I’d love to hear your thoughts on this episode! The reality - acknowledge that building a sustainable executive coaching business typically takes one to two years for consistent client flow and income. Building a support network – exactly who should be in your custom built business support community. Plus I’ll share a tool to help you with your business strategy basics before you get too deep! 3 things you must add to your coaching business in 2025
Welcome to the first episode of 2025! Today I’m sharing three key strategies to enhance your coaching business this year. Embrace Experimentation Adopt a mindset of experimentation in your business. This approach allows you to view marketing and sales strategies as experiments rather than definitive wins or losses. By identifying what to experiment with and collecting data on your efforts, you can learn, iterate, and bounce back from setbacks more effectively. It is also kind of liberating to know that nothing is set in stone! Prioritise Warm Outreach Warm outreach is crucial for client acquisition. While creating valuable content is important, it’s not enough on its own. Combine your content efforts with strategic outreach to your warmest leads to enhance your marketing effectiveness. Establish a regular rhythm of connecting with your ideal audiences to nurture relationships that can lead to new clients. Increase Your Volume Many coaches underestimate the volume of leads needed to convert clients. Visualize your sales process as a funnel: the more warm leads you have at the top, the more clients you’ll gain at the bottom. Focus on creating more content, engaging with more people, and being more present in your marketing efforts. If you are looking to grow your business in 2025, book a call with me to discuss your strategy – and how the Corporate to Coach Accelerator could help. Help me make the podcast even more relevant in 2025! If you have a question, subject idea or topic – just fill out this form!
Don't forget to reflect on what went well in 2024
In this episode of the Business of Executive Coaching podcast, I discuss the importance of reflection as we transition from 2024 to 2025. I encourage listeners to take time to assess the past year, focusing specifically on what went well in 2024. Because coaches can find this deeply uncomfortable (!) I share a few suggestions to focus on the highlights and what went well: Client Sources: Identify where your clients came from and which sources were the ‘easiest’. Highlights Reel: Create a highlights reel of peak experiences from both work and personal life. Positive Feedback: Review positive feedback received throughout the year to identify themes and reasons for praise. Positive Impact: Reflect on the broader impact of your work on clients, organizations, and communities. Handling Challenges: Consider how you navigated challenges and recognize your accomplishments in difficult situations. What were your successes in 2025? Please send me a DM on LinkedIn and let me know what your reflections and wins were for 2024! You can find me on LinkedIn here. If you want to focus on your business in 2025, you might want to consider joining my intensive group coaching programme – The Corporate to Coach Accelerator. How I've used AI in my business in 2024
In this episode of the Business of Executive Coaching podcast, I share how I've integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into my coaching business over the past year. With the holiday season providing more time for reflection, I wanted to offer valuable insights for my listeners. I discuss my evolving perspective on AI, emphasizing that while my core principles remain the same, the tools I use have advanced. My main guideline is that AI-generated content must retain my unique voice and build upon my existing intellectual property. I believe AI can handle about 90% of the work, but it’s the final 10%—the personal touch—that makes it truly representative of me. Key applications of AI in my business include: Writing Assistant: I use ChatGPT and Swell AI to repurpose podcast content into newsletters and social media posts, significantly reducing the time spent on these tasks. Brainstorming: When I need ideas, I turn to ChatGPT for generating topics and suggestions, ensuring my prompts are clear and specific. Research Assistant: I occasionally use AI to gather information, but I advise caution as it can sometimes provide inaccurate data. Feedback and Editing: AI helps me obtain feedback on my writing from various perspectives, enhancing content quality. Audio and Video Editing: Tools like Descript streamline my podcast and video editing processes by removing filler words and allowing easy content modifications. I also share my curiosity about future AI applications, such as building my own GPT model and exploring tools like Sintra AI, which aim to replace traditional team roles with specialized AI bots. If you’d like to start small, here is a guide on How to Use AI to Save Time in Your Executive Coaching Business. 29 - Nathan Blair on somatic approaches in coaching and business
For this episode I am so fortunate to be speaking with Nathan Blair. Nathan is a coach and entrepreneur who discovered somatic approaches during his search for ways to manage ADHD as a young person. I’ve heard a lot about somatic approaches in executive coaching and truly my understanding is patchy. I’ve probably avoided it because it felt a little too ‘woo woo’ for me, but I think the evidence has caught up and I’m behind the 8 ball. In this episode I got to ask Nathan my most uninformed questions, which he answered with grace and humour. We discuss: what exactly ‘a somatic approach’ means the evidence base using these approaches in corporate environments how you might use these approaches to help in your own business the Embodied Business Symposium and who its for. 27 - Can I REALLY call myself an executive coach?
The terminology ‘executive coach’ can be tricky, and I have met a number of coaches who aren’t sure if that is what they really are. In this episode I want to share what an executive coach actually is, and – spoiler alert – it doesn’t require coaching people at the C-Suite level. In my opinion the real differentiator of an executive coach is that we are coaching people in an organisational context – regardless of their place in the hierarchy. Let me know if you agree!
