[03:56] What is happening to young men’s being de-masculinized in today’s world? [06:15] Couples need to have time together and time apart. [09:19] People take things for granted and get bored because we are used to the dopamine spikes we get from something new and different. [12:55] We have to limit our exposure to screens and other things that tempt us so we don’t jeopardize our relationships. It is important to have body to body contact. [15:57] When a woman can be vulnerable, allow herself to feel that vulnerable place, that's what turns men on. [17:59] Women, in general, are insecure about being loved and being seen, whereas men’s vulnerability is about being successful. [21:22] Dopamine increases testosterone in men, and when women feel safe, it increases their estrogen, this creating the atmosphere for sex. [25:50] Men want to feel productive in order to make testosterone. [29:55] Connecting and socializing with others is very important. [37:55] The male brain doesn’t fully develop many of the masculine genes. There is a big difference in biology between men and women. [39:27] The difference in biology of men and women is the Y chromosome. Mentoring is very important. [42:14] Anything a woman does that lowers stress, is raising her estrogen. [45:51] So you gotta do something first, solve the problem, deal with the challenge, then go chill and rebuild testosterone. [47:55] The way women and men communicate is very different and should be understood so the talk between the couple is clear. [50:09] The feeling that you are being appreciated and trusted, makes a big impact, particularly in men. [54:45] In same sex couples, they have a male and female side inside of each of them. [59:52] Being vulnerable is not always positive. It can be the beginning of a violent confrontation. [01:04:25] Today’s females biggest fear is her partner’s anger. [01:10:24] One tip is for the woman to get for four hugs a day and ask, “Do you love me?” Research shows that if you have sex more than once a week, the testosterone level in the man will diminish. [01:23:17] Little things make a big difference for women. Little things do very little for men. [01:29:27] Women should learn to ask for things, even when it is something she can do for herself.

Brad Answers Questions From College Students About Health, Fitness, And Career Journey (Part 1)
My old friend Courtney on the east coast has me occasionally speak to her college students studying health and fitness. As part of their assignment, they peppered me with really thoughtful questions. It was great to reflect on the thought processes of today's youth, and their keen interest in living, healthy, active, evolved lifestyles. I share my thoughts on this in today’s episode, which I was inspired to record after watching a TikTok video a friend sent me about the importance of working hard, never missing a day, and why cranking out 100 shots a day is the “simple formula” to help you get a full scholarship. Breather: The Truth Behind Running Overuse Injuries
Did you know that there is no data that has ever been presented that has shown that elevated, cushioned shoes prevent running injuries? A 2021 meta study from Europe revealed an annual injury rate of 37 to 56% of regular runners, Runner’s World reported 46% of runners get injured every year, a study from Yale reports 50%, while Wake Forest Biomechanics Laboratory says 79% of runners get an overuse injury every year. Interestingly, The American College of Sports Medicine states that 25% of all runners are sidelined at a given time—a stat worse than the injury rates for NFL players (31 percent injured annually with four percent at a given time)! In this episode, we get to the bottom of this issue, since there have been many misconceptions and misunderstandings about what is causing these running inquiries, and the nuances are quite interesting. Brad Kearns: The Importance Of Developing The Aerobic System
I want to talk about the concept of aerobic deficiency—something that is very common, even amongst very fit, high-performing athletes. Aerobic deficiency (a term coined by Dr. Phil Maffetone), or anaerobic excess, means that while you’ve developed tremendous performance skills, the capacity of the aerobic system is lacking due to insufficient aerobic conditioning/workouts. So while you are good for short bursts of power, your overall athletic potential is limited by insufficient development of the aerobic system. As you will hear in this show, it’s important to remember that even the most explosive, powerful athletes require sufficient aerobic conditioning in order to thrive in the long duration workouts that they perform in order to hone their abilities so they can compete in activities like powerlifting and sprinting. If you are the type of person who will go out to sprint practice for an hour or even up to two hours, this is an episode you don’t want to miss. As you’ll learn, even if you are also stretching and resting throughout that practice session, the aerobic system is still working for the entire duration of the workout—the same concept applies to going to the gym to perform heavy weight lifting sessions. If you want to learn how to sufficiently develop your aerobic system, this episode will walk you through every step and teach you how to do it. TIMESTAMPS: Aerobic deficiency is very common even among very fit, powerful high-performing athletes. [00:38] The aerobic system contributes very much to even very short duration efforts. [04:01] A 50 50 ratio of aerobic to anaerobic contribution to your energy needs is a minute and 15 seconds all-out performance. [06:23] When we truly conduct a fat-burning workout that emphasizes aerobic development and minimizes anaerobic stimulation, it is frustratingly slow in many cases. [10:25] At Fat Max you are burning maximum fat minimum glucose and as you speed up, fat burning goes down and sugar burning spikes. [13:43] Fat Max is 180 minus your age in beats per minute. Breather: Why Slowing Down Will Help You Go Faster
In this breather show, you will learn how slowing down can actually help you go faster, which is a crucial subject to gain a deep understanding and appreciation of, lest you have the inclination as a hard-driving athlete to speed up a little bit in the pursuit of getting fitter. It is an unassailable fact of exercise physiology that a robust aerobic system is a prerequisite for a robust anaerobic system. As you will hear in this episode, your aerobic energy producing enzymes and muscle fibers are intertwined with your fast twitch muscle fibers and glycolytic enzymes, and they supply them with the nutrients, blood, and oxygen they need to contract forcefully (without using oxygen) for short duration. Then, they need to be refueled and replenished, and this is where the aerobic system comes in—by then facilitating the removal of waste products and energy replenishment afterward. Brad Kearns: Thoughts About The $2 Million Longevity Man Bryan Johnson
My thoughts on the $2 million dollar anti-aging man? You’ll hear them all in this episode—I’m talking about Bryan Johnson and his highly debated lifestyle. You may have already heard of Bryan, a tech centi-millionaire based in Los Angeles, since he has become a pretty controversial figure and has faced a lot of ridicule for ridiculously regimented and heavily tested life (think biohacking, but on an extreme level). Based in Los Angeles, Bryan has dedicated his life to reversing the aging process and promoting his movement which he calls, “Don’t Die.” I will admit I used to view Bryan’s whole lifestyle as super weird, especially the $2 million dollars a year part, which seemed not just totally unrelatable, but also potentially uninteresting and inapplicable. However, I decided to learn more about Bryan and listened to interviews he gave with people like Gabby Reece, and I started to see something different—someone who was generous, interesting, and kind-hearted, who was genuinely just trying to do something grand to help humanity. As you will hear, I am not planning on implementing many of his methods, but I wanted to educate myself about him so I could share my thoughts about his lifestyle from an informed perspective. In this episode, I talk about the many elements of Bryan’s lifestyle and beliefs and share my personal opinions on his choices, such as my thoughts on Bryan’s assertion that AI is going to be the best way to care for our health (and make our lifestyle decisions) in the future, why sleep is his #1 priority, if I will consider emulating his early bed-time, his choice to adhere to a calorie deficient diet, and more. There are two main types of cramps: sudden-onset and a severe localized cramp of a specific muscle (e.g., the right calf) is more likely due to central nervous system fatigue than dehydration or electrolyte depletion. Cramps that progress from mild to severe and are bilateral (i.e., both calves or both hamstrings) are more likely due to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Q&A: Fueling During Endurance Exercise, Losing Fat Quickly, Calcium Scans For Athletes, Adjusting MAF Heart Rates
In this Q&A, I share the story of an ultra-endurance athlete who improved their health and lowered blood pressure by adding meat to their diet, if we need to consume fat (bacon and avocado!) during ultramarathons (short answer: no!), and whether or not I recommend eating fruit and high protein every day, regardless of athletic goals? I also share the story of a couple who lost lots of excess body fat in two months by using keto and intermittent fasting and talk about the importance of looking at the big picture of heart disease risk factors and doing further testing if necessary. Finally, should longtime extreme endurance athletes consider a CAC (coronary artery calcium scan), and can fit, older athletes add five beats or more to MAF heart rate? Breather: Symptoms of Overtraining During Workouts
It’s important to pay close attention at all times to symptoms of overreaching and overtraining and take corrective action immediately (this is true for both novices and competitive types), and this episode will teach you how to do this. As you will hear, the best leading indicator of overtraining is a slower MAF test performance—this is where you complete a fixed course (e.g., 8 laps of the track, or pedal 4 miles on stationary bike), holding your heart rate as close as possible to “fat max” aka aerobic maximum, and record your time. A slower time means you are out of stress-rest balance, and this is true even if you are experiencing competitive success at higher heart rates. Dr. Elisha Goldstein - Mindfulness In The Age Of Distractibility And Hyper-Connectivity
I have an awesome and beautiful rebroadcast episode for you today from Dr. Elisha Goldstein—founder of the Center for Mindful Living in Los Angeles, CA, along with his wife, co-founder Stefanie. They do incredible work there and this interview was one of the best discussions I’ve had for this show—and it will stop all us distracted, multitasking, text binging, social media addicted modern humans in our tracks and rock our world! We all know the dangers and drawbacks of hyper-connectivity and distractibility, and our diminishing focus and mindfulness in hectic modern life, but we seem to be collectively shrugging our shoulders, complaining a bit here and there, and carrying on, glued to our devices. My visit with Dr. Goldstein had a deep impact on me, because he explained beautifully how our repeated use of technology gets integrated into habit. Brad: Forget The Diet Wars! Focus On "Perform, Recover"
I have had it with the stupid diet wars, so it’s time for a rant and an episode highlighting the big picture perspective of leading a healthy, active, energetic lifestyle and the benefits of focusing on “perform, recover, perform, recover”—my new mantra, which should supercede all the arguing and nitpicking we do about the particulars of plant-based vs animal-based diets, etc. This show was inspired by my friend sending me an innocent email reporting the results of a Stanford study that’s been getting a lot of headlines lately about identical twins who were each fed a different diet for eight weeks (one vegan, one animal based). I talk about the study in this show, including who funded the study in the first place (would you be shocked to learn it was a plant-based company?!), the importance of looking beyond headlines when it comes to health, and big picture insights that will help you navigate to the healthiest, most nutritious diet, and keep you on the path to longevity and disease prevention. In this episode, I share my recommendations for blood testing for health, disease screening, and peak performance with particular relevance to fitness-minded males who want to age gracefully. Unfortunately, typical screening is just scratching the surface and there are many flawed and dated misconceptions about mainstream medical system blood screening and disease risk factors, so I wanted to talk about which tests I recommend, counter some of the misconceptions and misinterpretations about this topic, and share commentary from highly respected ancestral health leaders like Dr. Cate Shanahan, Dr. Ron Sinha, Dr. Peter Attia, Dr. Paul Saladino, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, and Dr. Layne Norton. After listening to this show, you will come away with a better understanding of your test results and also with an understanding of how you can take more control of your blood testing. One way to accomplish this is by ordering tests directly and getting results via the Internet—I have done this myself for many years by testing my male hormone profiles frequently and tracking the results against my lifestyle practices (hint: overtraining tanks testosterone). [03:39] The triglycerides to HDL ratio is the single most important marker for heart disease. [05:31] There are some things to analyze on your own blood report. Ask for fasting blood insulin. And test your body composition for free. [12:14] As you age, it is important to focus on the sex hormone panels. Testosterone is an extremely important hormone. [19:20] Vitamin D technically is a hormone rather than a vitamin. It is important for cancer prevention. Learn about proper sun exposure. [27:04] Some other important tests are hemoglobin, hematocrit, and iron. High blood viscosity is a red flag. [33:30] Fasting glucose and HB A1C levels can predict what your blood sugar is like. [37:19] A quick analysis of your waistline is to look at the waist to height ratio. The waist in inches should be half of the height in inches. [41:20] Colonoscopy and mammograms are important but you need to beware about false positives and the stress they cause. Insist on thorough EKG. [43:20] Blood pressure is something you can monitor at home. There are many causes of high unhealthy blood pressure that can be handled by changes you can make. [48:12] In summary, stay on top of your blood readings, especially if you are an active athlete. Testosterone is especially important as you age. Track & Field fans will recognize Ato since he is one of the fastest humans of all time who competed in the Olympics back in the ‘90s representing Trinidad and Tobago (he also has eight global medals). Breather: Lion Martinez - The World's Fastest Masters Sprinter
Listeners, you know how much I love to talk about sprinting and recommend adding sprinting (truly explosive, all-out, maximum efforts) to your training regimen for all the wonderful health, fitness, and longevity benefits that accrue—which is why it was such an extreme privilege to welcome Lion Martinez to the show. Breather: Dopamine - Learn The Difference Between Beneficial Pursuits And Health-Destructive Pursuits
Let’s talk about dopamine—specifically beneficial vs. health destructive dopamine pursuits. We hear about this wonderful chemical (often referred to as the reward chemical) all the time, but as you’ll learn in this show, the experts will tell you that it’s really the motivation chemical. When dopamine is released into your bloodstream, it motivates you to continue to pursue what is perceived as pleasurable and rewarding behaviors. But we have hijacked our body chemistry in modern life, and we no longer exist in the same kind of life-or-death circumstances of primal times, so now we can achieve pleasurable dopamine highs through the use of all kinds of adverse vehicles (like recreational drugs). However, as you will hear in this breather show, there are ways to promote a sustained release of dopamine without that crash we’re all familiar with when we indulge in things that hijack brain chemistry. This is important because when you flood your dopamine pathways with instant gratification behaviors, you block the pathways that are intended for serotonin and oxytocin—however, when you persevere through challenging pursuits that align with your passion and purpose, you release dopamine, as well as other pleasure chemicals, that contribute to leading a rich, meaningful, hormone and neurotransmitter balanced life.
