In Psalms 74 we have another psalm by Aasaph, but about the destruction of Jerusalem. How could Asaph have lived hundreds of years to write this psalm… this video explains. The psalm is a prayer to God to rise up and listen to the mockery of his name… and do something. We would well pay attention to this as the same situation exists today. The Lord’s name is again a mockery and our prayers are needed.

In Psalms 73 we are now into the Psalms of Asaph, and he makes a confession. He nearly fell away from faith because he saw how wicked people got away with things and did well. But in this Psalm he has a revelation of the consequences of their actions eventually and is so glad he is in the Lord.

In Psalms 70 we have a short little psalm containing a prayer for those in need of an urgent and immediate response from God. It is also an almost verbatim copy of five verses out of Psalm 40. A psalm for those who need God to do something…. NOW.

Christ himself quotes from this psalm several times. It reflects a moment in david’s life when he was in great trouble, and is prophetic of the great trouble the Lord went through for us.

In Psalms 68 we sing a great song of praise and imprecation, when David had just become king and was rising up to defeat his enemies. He says… “Let God arise! Let his enemies be scattered.” God’s enemies are his enemies and this psalm is a song of attack.

In this video listen to Psalms 67 read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer. In Psalms 67 we have an unexpected prayer… for the conversion of the gentiles. If there was ever a Jew, or a Pharisee who thought the blessings of Abraham was for them alone, this psalm is a witness against them. We are blessed, so that others might also be blessed

In Psalms 66 the psalmist calls the earth to praise the Lord with joy… and the earth is the nations, meaning the gentile peoples. Why would a Jew call the Gentiles to praise the Lord…. because this psalm is about the Lord’s deliverance of Jerusalem and the defeat of Sennacherib and the Assyrian army. The whole world was blessed by this event, not just the citizens of Jerusalem.

In this video listen to Psalms 65 read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer. In Psalms 65 we have a psalm of common grace. It is a psalm of praise outlining the things that God does for all humanity, even if they don’t know about it. Someone overwhelmed by depression and pain can simultaneously be surrounded by God’s goodness but doesn’t see a drop of it. And also, regular people see the good things, but don’t ascribe it to the Lord. This psalm calls us to praise him for all he has done.

In this video listen to Psalms 62 read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer. In Psalms 62 is a song written for Jeduthun - a very talented musician and singer in Israel. This psalm is about what is means to rest… in God. Few people know how to do that.

In this video listen to Psalms 61 read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer. In Psalms 61 we have a song when David is fleeing from an enemy and hiding in the desert. Not everyone has had to hide in the middle of nowhere for their safety. But perhaps you feel alone and isolated and long for things to be normal. This is your psalm.

David is attacked by the Edomites while his army is away fighting Aram, and he questions the Lord why this was allowed to happen. Later his army sorts out the Edomites, but this psalm is in between those moments.

This time people are all around David’s house watching to kill him. He escapes out a window, suggesting his house was built into the wall of the city. In Psalms 53 we have an almost identical copy of Psalm 14 except for one verse which is different (verse 5) and a most profound change. Everytime God is named in psalm 14 it says “Yahweh” but here every time God is named it says “Elohim.” Such a change is not obvious to our english transitions, but it has implications.

The psalm is specifically about Doeg the edomite who killed 80 priest for a personal reward, but about all people who drag others down so they can get ahead.

This psalm is a window into how the ancient world worked, and a very unique look at how true repentance should happen. We also briefly consider temptation.

While this psalm may well have been written about the time that David subdued the nations around him, it speaks about Christ and his subjugation of all things.

Many believers know what it is like to live surrounded by those who don’t know the Lord.

In this video listen to Psalms 42 read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer. In Psalms 42 we have a son of Korah lamenting how much he misses God - as a deer thirst for water. The author seems to have been from the north of Israel - near Mt Hermon, possibly in the land of Dan. Set in the time after the nation split and the north was ruled by Jeroboam and the golden calves, the writer remembers how he used to go to Jerusalem for pilgrimage. His heart is sad - he misses the fellowship at the temple. It is a sweet psalm of longing.
