In Psalms 118 we come to the very middle chapter in the Bible. Congratulations - you are halfway through. This psalm is a song about the Messiah who comes to save. In context it was David and his military campaigns saving Israel from its enemies. But this is a psalm about Christ - and quoted by the giant crown on palm Sunday as JEsus walked triumphantly into the city. Sadly this psalm also contained things the crowd didn’t know at the time… watch and find out.

In Psalms 88 we have the saddest psalm in the the psalter, and one of the saddest chapters in the bible. It is also a psalm of Heman the Ezraite, the grandson of the prophet Samuel and an fairly unknown figure. He was in a state of hopelessness when he wrote this prayer and no hope emerges at any point through the psalm, yet he prays it anyway. We learn that we ust trust in Christ even when we feel nothing at all.

This psalm is about Israel’s failure to listen to God and obey, and speaks to us about our failure to listen. THe psalm says that if we do listen, our enemies will be defeated. So even the enemies instrument is a witness that this is true.

Not only was God’s city and temple destroyed then…. But they are attacked today. This calls for the soft hearts of God’s people.

Ephraim was the leadership of Joshua, which didn’t conquer the land, but Judah was the leadership of David, who did conquer the land.
