Ep 145Talking Trump Taekwondo Controversy

On November 21, 2021 Kukkiwon President Lee-Dong-Sup presented former United States President an honorary 9th Dan Black Belt. For some this was an outrageous misstep. For others it was a triumphant moment. While it is not 100% clear all of the factors that went into the decision to issue this honor, what is clear is that it caused a significant backlash and controversy. The controversy caused World Taekwondo, the sports arm of Taekwondo to issue a statement distancing itself from this decision. Marc Zirogiannis discusses the controversy and the statement issued by World Taekwondo. *This episode presented by Bet Online. Bet Online is your online sports book expert. Ep 143Valerie Loureda Bellator 271 Victory Recap

Master Valerie Loureda Bellator MMA 271 Win-Breakdown. Earlier tonight (Friday November 12, 2021) 4th Dan Taekwondo Master, Valerie Loureda, won her match against Taylor Turner in a split decision in Bellator MMA #271. In this episode, Marc Zirogiannis, LIVE during the match, breaks down the victory and calls the "play by play". On Taekwondo Life Magazine's card Master Loureda clearly won all three rounds for a unanimous decision; however, one judge awarded the decision to Loureda's opponent. The fight was distinct in Mixed Martial Arts, as there was not one instance where the fighters ended up on the ground, or engaged in any ground game, whatsoever. The victory was marked by Loureda's domination of the stand up game, mostly with a series of hand combinations and some footwork. At the closing seconds of Round 1, Loureda unloaded a signature spinning back kick, causing some damage to her 5ft 10 inch opponent. In the closing seconds of the fight itself Master Loureda devastated Turner with a shocking blow to the face the drew blood; given more time this may have ended in a TKO.This marks Lourdes's 4th Professional win, in which three (3) were won by KO.*This episode is presented by Bet Online. Ep 142We Won! I am So Sorry.

When does an athlete, or a coach, or team have to apologize for winning? If they cheat, for sure! If they gloat, and they treat the losing team disrespectfully, then yes. How about when they simply win big- fair and square, with dignity, but they win really, really big? In Taekwondo Life Magazine's estimation the answer is that you never have to apologize for doing your best and winning in a fair manner. However, a recent series of cases and laws may make winning big a "quasi-criminal act." While this might sound outrageous-it is true.In 2017 Nassau County, NY passed a law saying that in high school football any team winning by more than 42 points is subject to sanctions, and that this team will be deemed per se "unsportsmanlike", not from their behavior, but from the point gap alone. Further exploration of this law makes it clear; the winning team, and coach, regardless of how they conducted themselves, or their play, will be sanctioned if they exceed the 42 point gap in order to save the losing team from embarrassment. Perhaps the goal is noble, but is the solution just?Today's episode looks at this outrageous rule, its relationship to Taekwondo competition, and its implications for our young people.*Presented by Bet Online. Ep 138Was Tarantino Right About Bruce Lee?

In the 2019 blockbuster film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino scripted a controversial and memorable scene where his lead character, Rick Dalton, encounters and fights a very brash and arrogant, Bruce Lee. Despite the film's fictional nature the scene, and the positive response to the film, the scene created an uproar in the martial arts community. Shannon Lee, Bruce's daughter, criticized this depiction of her father. Taekwondo Master, Michael Moh, who portrayed the legendary martial artist, philosopher, and movie legend found himself on the defensive for his portrayal. Tarantino, however, was unapologetic, and stood behind his hyperbolic version of the world's most influential martial artist. In September of 2021 Netflix released a 2016 film, Birth of the Dragon, which fictionally retells the story of Bruce Lee's legendary fight with Wong Jack-man. This film, similarly, depicts Bruce Lee as a brash and arrogant young man with a big mouth and a bad temper. Are these two depictions accurate, or are they an attempt to tear down the image of the iconic face of modern martial arts?In this episode Taekwondo Life Magazine talks with scholar and martial artist, Peter Zirogiannis, about this very topic. Peter supports his position with his research on the life, writings, personal interactions, and interviews of Bruce Lee that the world has to remember him by. Peter also discusses the impact of these depictions on the Legacy of Bruce Lee.*This episode is presented by Bet Online. Ep 135Is Keanu Reeves The #1 Martial Arts Movie Star In The World?

Keanu Reeves is one of the best known movie stars in the world. His pictures have grossed more than $6 billion dollars worldwide. The Matrix Trilogy and the John Wick Films have accounted for more than $2 billion in box office ticket sales over the past two decades. These are among the best and most influential films of a generation, and they make Keanu Reeves, potentially, the biggest martial arts movie star that ever existed. While most people may not consider him a martial arts movie icon because, even by his own words he only knows, “movie kung fu“, there is a compelling argument to support the moniker, “#1 martial arts movie star in the world.”While Reeves does not have a traditional martial arts background he began training in the martial arts for the first Matrix (1999) film, undergoing four months of daily intensive training prior to the start of shooting that blockbuster film. His work with Yuen Woo-Ping, Hong Kong’s acclaimed martial arts action choreographer, resulted in stunning fights and weapons scenes. Had it stopped there Reeves would still be responsible for one of the best martial arts and sci-fi films ever made; however, there was so much more to come.Reeves went on to train intensely and release two more Matrix films, which were filled with martial arts action fight scenes. Neo’s fight scenes with Morpheus, Agent Smith, and The Agent Smiths are as good as any ever filmed. Reeves also paired with Woo-Ping to star in, and Direct, Man of Tai Chi (2013), a true martial arts combat film. The climax of that film involves Reeves and Tiger Chensquaring off in a classic, “old school’ fight scene.2014 brought John Wick, a film by Chad Stahelski, in which Reeves again underwent 3-4 months of intensive training in martial arts and weapons to result in a stunning and pivotal film which transformed the genre and spawned two beloved sequels (with a 3rd in pre-production). The Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and weapons realism in those films set new standards in movie making, and martial arts fight choreography. With Ten (10) martial arts action films, $6 billion dollars in box office gross, and serious martial arts training in Taekwondo, Kung Fu, BJJ, Judo there is no question that Keanu Reeves is not only a martial arts movie star, but perhaps, the biggest that ever graced the Silver Screen. On this week’s program, Marc Zirogiannis explores the question of Keanu Reeves’ Martial Arts Superstardom.*This episode is presented by Bet Online, your online sports book experts.**Get free shipping at Balance7 when you use the code: BLEAVSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info. Ep 115The Paper Tigers is a Winner (Movie Review)

From Taekwondo Life Magazine's Review: The Paper Tigers is a winner! When I heard that the film's Writer and Director, Quoc Boa Tran, opted to take The PaperTigers off the Hollywood studio track and produce this martial arts movie project using the Crowd-Funding route I became very curious. Before seeing the film I had very low expectations for it. I presumed that while the story was interesting, that the film would play out as a low budget, well intentioned, poorly executed project. Nothing could be further from the truth. This film is a testament to the creative vision of its creator and the clear "buy in" of the cast and crew. This is one of the best films I have seen in years. The Paper Tigers will be in theaters and on VOD May 7, 2021. I highly recommend it. This movie will make you feel good and warm your heart. Ep 102Bleav in Cobra Kai Season 3

A look at Season 3 of the hit Karate Kid spin-off series, Cobra Kai. The highly anticipated release of the former YouTube property delivers an engaging and enjoyable continuation of the Karate Kid series. While the series is corny and predictable, it is also still very watchable. It works, in part, because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. There is an underlying recognition throughout the series that this is entertainment for the sake of entertainment. The Cobra Kai Series has clearly done more to excite interest in martial arts practice than any other project since the original film series that spawned this project. I have heard from numbers of Dojang owners that can trace new student enrollments, even during the difficulty of the pandemic, directly to Cobra Kai viewership. That alone says a lot about how the series has connected with a generation that wasn’t even born when Daniel LaRusso fought Johnny Lawrence in the All Valley Karate Tournament. While the 3rd season continues to develop its new story line and trade off its origins, it also continues to create back stories which make the characters more multi-dimensional than those created in the John Avildsen film. The biggest weakness of the season is that it is a little light on training and fight sequences. I expect the next season, which is already in the works, will have more of these scenes because of the already foreshadowed storyline. The strength continues to be the power of William Zabka to engage, interest, and entertain. Cobrak Kai Season 3 does not disappoint.
