Talking Russia in the 2024 Paris Olympics. In this episode Master Marc Zirogiannis discusses the IOC's decision to allow Russian athletes to compete in the 2024 Pros Games. While this statement and decision reinforced the decision to ban Russian and Belarus, as nations, from the games, it also created pathways for their athletes to compete in the games. This decision was met with condemnation by Nancy Armour, of USA Today. Ms. Armour's Editorial attacks the decision as acquiescent to Russian and its President. Her attack was not only on the decision, but pointed directly at IOC President Thomas Bach. Julio Cesar Carlos becomes the first fighter to sign with PKA Worldwide as the legendary kickboxing organization is set to make its highly anticipated return. Carlos is a six-time world champion in taekwondo and the reigning New York state GAMMA champion. Born in Queens, New York Carlos first began training at the age of four years old under the influence of his family. Now he is set to take center stage as the franchise fighter for this revamped Professional Kickboxing League. PKA Worldwide is often regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern day MMA having introduced professional kickboxing with an "Americanized" style to the public in 1974. They've put on many events with large audiences broadcasted on major televised platforms such as ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN and SHOWTIME. "I'm a flashy kicker trying to bring something new to the stage. That's the thing about PKA, we're looking for the best stand up strikers in the world. It's a little different than what we see now and days. UFC MMA is big and all that but personally for me the way to figure out who the best martial artist is you have to look at the skill, the technique and the striking. That's he cool thing about PKA... only striking, only stand up, you have to throw eight kicks above the belt each round and if you don't you get penalized. On November 19, 2022 Jason David Frank, better known as White/Green Power Ranger Tommy Oliver, passed away at the age of 49. Later news reports would reveal his death a suicide. Frank was a talented martial artist, have black belts in multiple styles, including Taekwondo. He was, in addition to being a television actor, was an MMA fighter and Martial arts school owner. Jason David Frank, apparently, was a strong influence on worldwide martial arts' student enrollment. He seems to have suffered mental health issues and depression. Accident Man 2 is a really great martial arts action film. Set in Malta, the story revolves around the interruption of Adkins’ new life, as he is forced to protect the ungrateful son of a mafia boss, save the life of his only friend, and rekindle his relationship with his maniacal father figure. As 2022 races into the 4th quarter Accident Man: Hitman’s Holiday is the easily one of the best martial arts action films of the year. The United Nations General Assembly took place this week in NYC. Among the visiting international representatives visiting the United States was South Korea’s current President, Yoon Suk-yeol. This past weekend KTA NY and Kukkiwon conducted a multi-day Live International Masters Course and Pool/Dan Examiner Course in Queens, NYC. Marc Zirogiannis reports from the 2022 Taekwondo Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which took place on Friday August 19, 2022at the luxurious Grand Hyatt Regency in Jersey City, USA. The Taekwondo Hall of Fame is the brainchild of Grandmaster Gerald Robbins. Grandmaster Robbins was a guest of Taekwondo Life Magazine back in March 2019. World Taekwondo (WT) has revised the sport's rules to make it more interesting after receiving criticism during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for "foot fencing". Foot fencing is where athletes keep one leg in the air and hop on the other foot in an attempt to score a kick with the lofted leg. It is technically legal but considered bad form. The Goyang 2022 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships took place on April 21-24 as over 900 athletes and 224 officials from 63 countries retuned after a 4 year hiatus. Korea retained its dominance by garnering 20 Gold medals. Taipei took second (2nd) place. The United States, landing in third place (3rd) garnered a total of 28 medals and had their best showing since the event launched in 2006. The Goyang 2022 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships is set to get underway on April 21-24 as a record 760 athletes and 224 officials from 63 countries will take part in the event after a four-year break. The 2020 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships were cancelled due to the Global Pandemic. During that time Online Poomsae practice and competition became a huge part of Taekwondo practice. The International Olympic Committee once again approved Taekwondo as an addition to the Summer Games. Since its Demonstration in Seoul, Korea in 1988 Taekwondo practitioners have been able to look forward to being part of the International Festival of competition every 4 years. 2028 will be no exception. Grandmaster Suh Chong Kang Passes at 92. On January 30, 2022, Grandmaster Suh Chong Kang, passed away this week at the age of 92. In 1949, Grandmaster Kang founded his own kwan, which he named Kuk Mu Kwan. Grandmaster Kang, a 2009 Taekwondo Hall of Fame Inductee, was a historic figure in the founding of modern Taekwondo and its introduction to the United States. Grandmaster Kang is survived by Grandmaster Chungsun Kang (Irvine California), Grandmaster Hosun Kang (Edison New Jersey), and Grandmaster Taesun Kang Jersey City, New Jersey Services for Grandmaster Kang were held today at Kim’s Funeral Home in Fort Lee, NJ. The USAT Eastern Athlete Academy took place this past weekend in Gainesville Virginia at the Dojang of US Tigers. Sparring athletes, Poomsae athletes, Coaches, masters, and families traveled from all over the region to converge on Gainesville for 2+ days for training, working out, and learning under the tutelage of experienced and dedicated coaches. Simultaneously USAT certified Referees in Poomsae and Kyrugi were learning about the most recent changes in rules and working together with the camps for a real world, tournament style training experience.
