BSCMC 035 - Abby and the Notorious Neighbor

E

Detective Tanner and Gumshoe Jack wade into a mystery that they are fundamentally ill equipped to solve, featuring not just Abby Stevenson, but a beloved and dangerous Marvel hero, the entire crew from “Mystery Men,” an ascended Lawnmower Man version of Janine Kishi, and a stone cold hottie who’s been hiding in plain sight this whole time. Oh, and also Cenobites! And Kristy. Kristy’s in this one too. Ellen Miles did a whole lot with some pretty limited space this week. Music credits: “School Music Video,” by DjHappY “Hip Hop,” by Forty Two Studio “Typewriter Blues,” by Allen Grey “Interface,” by Clean Mind Sounds “Spy Comedy,” by Dred Studio “License to Kill,” by Petrej “You Gotta Have Theremin and Ukulele,” by Squidlord “Cinematic Ominous 80’s,” by Luca Francini “Beautiful Darkness,” by Allen Grey “Parting Ways,” by Allen Grey “Jazz Sad Hip Hop,” by Black Stone Sound Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, Baby Bee Liz for the “Guessing the Mystery” theme, and to Superbrat for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 034 - Mary Anne and the Haunted Bookstore

E

An illuminating peek inside the writing process of the mysterious Vicki Berger Erwin, this scintillating episode takes you where no other Baby-Sitters Club criticism has ever dared: Into the eye of the furious storm that is created when a BSC ghostwriter at the top of her abilities is unshackled and given free reign to make art that will change us forever. Anyway, this art has Mary Anne in it, and weirdly, Edgar Allen Poe, and also lots of birds and if there are any bird scientists out there, we desperately need your help. Music credits: “Horror Creepy Haunted Dollhouse,” by Marco Belloni Music “Beautiful Darkness,” by Allen Grey “Typewriter Blues,” by AllenGrey Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, to Baby Bee Liz for the “Guessing the Mystery” theme, and to Bye Bye Empire for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 033 - Stacey and the Stolen Hearts

E

Someone stole a bag from Stacey, but more importantly, someone stole Pete Black's heart, and we're not going to rest until they're behind bars where they belong. Meanwhile, Cary Retlin is stealing the show with his breathtaking coolness, Ellen Miles is stealing every single BSC B-Plot by having Kristy throw together some kind of Baby Parade, and Hodges Soileau is stealing Stacey's hair, which is troubling to say the least. Anyway, the primary mystery this week is that some Valentines have gone missing, and Stacey McGill is on the case. Unclear whether we cover any of that in the episode. Music credits: “Detective Jazz Man Blues,” by Allen Grey “Woodland Fantasy,” by Matthew Pablo “Hybrid Drama,” by Dred Studio “Epic Heroic Fantasy Action,” by Matthew Pablo “Medieval Harpsichord Royal,” by Flossie Wood “Energy Percussion,” by Tim Cat “Typewriter Blues,” by Allen Grey “Sneaky Troublemakers,” by Matthew Pablo “Beautiful Darkness,” by Allen Grey Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, to Baby Bee Liz for the “Guessing the Mystery” theme, and to Bye Bye Empire for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 032 - Claudia and the Mystery Painting

E

Art is a mystery, and the mystery we read this week was certainly a work of art because this week’s mystery was surging with VBE ENERGY! That’s right, Vicki Berger Erwin is back at the helm of the BSC books once again, so expect a lot of intrigue, villainy, strange POVs from dogs, and historical true crime. And it’s not just the scintillating book itself that will keep you on the edge of your seat, because this week’s episode is quite an affair… a Thomas Crown Affair. (Which I only mention because Jack didn’t seem to know the film and we shot by it pretty quickly.) Also, if anyone has seen or heard from Liz or Carys please let them know that we miss them and hope they come back to the show soon. Music Credits: Theme to “Burger Time” “Spy Hunter” by JBlanks “April 29, 1992” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Sublime “Typewriter Blues” by AllenGrey “Caress Me Down” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Sublime “Masquerade Ball” by AllenGrey “Sexy R&B Hip-Hop” by MeGustaMusic “Beautiful Darkness” by AllenGrey Thanks to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music and Superbrat for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 031 - Mary Anne and the Music Box Secret

E

Mary Anne discovered the freaking LAMENT CONFIGURATION in a wall this week and all hell quite literally broke loose. Meanwhile, the DeWitts are building an extension on their house, which, as a B-plot, doesn’t quite live up to the chills and thrills of the A-plot, but it’s certainly something to think about. Oh, and there’s a Sailor/Ghost. But don’t worry, this episode is not all scares – it’s also surprisingly sexy? “Cinematic Action 80’s," by Luca Francini “Epic Cinematic Horror Trailer,” by Luca Francini “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Music Box,” by Allen Grey “Once Upon a Dark Time,” by Allen Grey “Romantic Piano No. 4,” by Adigold “Typewriter Blues,” by AllenGrey “Masquerade Ball,” by Allen Grey “Jazz Sad Hip Hop,” by Black Stone Sound “Beautiful Darkness,” by Allen Grey Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, and to Superbrat for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 030 - Kristy And The Mystery Train

E

“A sense of endearing honesty permeates this episode, which is far more than anyone can say about Jack and Tanner’s subsequent work. It’s a shame that they decided not to continue down the path of laid-back, twangy roots podcasting, but alas, the taste of “BSCMC 030 - Kristy and the Train Mystery’s” success on the podcast charts proved to be too much to resist. Jack and Tanner’s podcasting contemporaries like the Wallflowers and Counting Crows ended up more-or-less fading from the spotlight by the turn of the century, so maybe they made the right financial decision. But more than anything, I can sum this podcast up as a sort of a snapshot – a snapshot of two talented, undiscovered podcasters trying to make the best podcast they can make, before the power of record labels and the allure of popularity inevitably took their toll.” Review by nickslip, Sputnik Music, August 24th, 2017 Music Credits: “Runaway Train” by Soul Asylum “Pure Joy” by TheStoryShop “Meet Virginia” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Train “8-Bit Christmas” by HeroKryzDUB “Building a Mystery” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Sarah McLachlan “40oz To Freedom” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Sublime “Typewriter Blues” by AllenGrey “Sports Arena Organ Plays Blue Danube Waltz” by Sound-Ideas “Caress Me Down” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Sublime “Beautiful Darkness” by AllenGrey Thanks to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music and Superbrat for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 029 - Stacey and the Fashion Victim

E

Somebody’s poisoning fashion teens this week, but don’t worry because Stacey McGill and her best friends Abraham Lincoln, Drop Dead Fred, and Wolverine are on the case! Meanwhile, Kristy is busy BLAZING a trail that the KIND people of STONEYbrook will never forget. It’s about weed. Oh, and Ellen Miles has a chilling message for the boys. Music credits: “Fashion Show,” by Alex Shulgin “Magical World,” by Stereo Nuts “Ethereal Voices,” by Luca Francini “Creeping Terror Horror Trailer,” by Marco Belloni Music “Serenity,” by Adigold “Beautiful Darkness,” by Allen Grey Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, and to Superbrat for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 028 - Abby and the Mystery Baby

E

To paraphrase Joe Pantoliano’s character Cypher in The Matrix, “You know, I know this mystery doesn’t exist. I know that when I put it in my eyes, Ellen Miles is telling my brain that it is intriguing and cryptic. After four years, you know what I realize? Ignorance is bliss.” That’s right, there was arguably no mystery once again in this week’s Baby-Sitters Club Mystery book, much like how the film Three Men and a Baby is not a fun romp about three men raising a baby, but instead a gritty action film about drugs and the mafia, but we loved both regardless of how far they may have missed the mark. Music Credits: “Comedy Pizzicato” by lucafrancini “Classic Arcade Video Game” by Adigold “My Sharona” (MIDI Version) originally performed by the Knack “Beat Box 1” by HollywoodEdge “Typewriter Blues” by AllenGrey “Building a Mystery” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Sarah McLachlan “Smoke Two Joints” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Sublime "Epic Patriotic Breakbeat” by StereoNuts “Caress Me Down” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Sublime “Once Upon a Dark Time” by AllenGrey “Just A Little Hope” by Adigold “Warmth Of The Sun” by Adigold “Look Into My Eyes” by AGsoundtrax “Beautiful Darkness” by AllenGrey Thanks to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music and Superbrat for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 027 - Claudia and the Lighthouse Ghost

E

'Tis the season for lighthouse ghosts, alien beehives, and AI-enabled thermonuclear devastation, and there's only one person in the whole wide world who could bring you all of that and more wrapped up in a (technically) Holiday-themed Baby-Sitters Club book. So if you detect a hint of exuberance in the boys' voices this week it's either because this scintillating novel is a beautiful gift, or it’s not exuberance at all but incipient panic about the fact that we just found out for certain that ghosts are real. Sorry. Scare warning. Anyway, Claudia and Janine both have eyes for this hunk named Steve and ghosts are real and a boy died. Enjoy! Music credits: “Typewriter Blues,” by AllenGrey “Just a Little Hope,” by Adigold “Parting Ways,” by Allen Grey “Jazz Sad Hip Hop,” by Black Stone Sound “Love Potion,” by Fasol Prod “Beautiful Darkness,” by Allen Grey “School Music Video,” by DjHappY Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, Baby Bee Liz for the “Guessing the Mystery” theme, and to Bye Bye Empire for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 026 - Dawn Schafer Undercover Baby-Sitter

E

It’s an undercover episode, by which we mean, it’s a totally normal episode and not really different in any way from any other episode of the show, according to Ellen’s definition of “undercover” apparently. But don’t worry, we take Ellen to task, and so does Hodges, weirdly. There actually seems to be a lot of bad blood between Ellen and Hodges and we’re not going to take sides. Also, there’s an exciting new segment/Gothic prom for your fridge fetishists out there! Music Credits: “Electric Intro Ident” by AllenGrey on Envato Elements “Dark Lullaby” by JBlanks on Envato Elements “Masquerade Ball” by AllenGrey on Envato Elements “Classic Arcade Video Game” by Adigold on Envato Elements “Building a Mystery” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Sarah McLachlan “Typewriter Blues” by AllenGrey on Envato Elements “Beautiful Darkness” by AllenGrey Thanks to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music and Superbrat for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 025 - Kristy and the Middle School Vandal

E

Who likes mysteries? We hope you do, because it’s time to get wet, wild, and wiggly for some horny mystery action with Nola, who's back, stacked, and Thacker than ever! Light spoilers in this one for Medieval European History, the fall of Rome, and parts of The Canterbury Tales. Oh and a teeny, tiny Scare Warning because of the bats and the patriotic witches, and because Kristy peers deep into the darkest part of her soul at a memory that she wishes would stay buried. But mostly this one’s just wet, wild, wiggly, and, as we mentioned, horny. Enjoy! Music credits: “Epic Cinematic Trailer,” by LucaFrancini “Typewriter Blues,” by AllenGrey “Show Logo,” by Stockwaves “Beautiful Darkness,” by Allen Grey Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, Baby Bee Liz for the “Guessing the Mystery” theme, and to Superbrat for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 024 - Mary Anne and the Silent Witness

E

Huge news this week, Riddlebabies. We think we uncovered the origins of *69, and it’s way raunchier than you probably imagined. (Also, for younger listeners, we don’t have time to explain *69, so just Google it.) Also, Cyril makes an extended appearance and gives a middling performance (at best) saying “why why.” Oh, and there was a BSC Mystery book somewhere in there. We touch on it a bit. Music Credits: Theme song from “Avatar: The Last Airbender” “Classic Arcade Video Game” by Adigold on Envato Elements “Building a Mystery” (Karaoke Version) originally performed by Sarah McLachlan “Pop Dance” by alexshulgin on Envato Elements “Once Upon a Dark Time” by AllenGrey on Envato Elements “Soft & Peaceful” by AllenGrey on Envato Elements “Inspiring Soft Piano” by OlexandrIgnatov on Envato Elements “Happy Banjolele Skiffle” by AndySlatter on Envato Elements “Halloween Dubstep Logo” by lucafrancini on Envato Elements “Typewriter Blues” by AllenGrey on Envato Elements “Star 69” by REM “Spiderwebs” by No Doubt “Mischief & Mystery Carnival” by AllenGrey on Envato Elements “Patriotic” by AllenGrey on Envato Elements “Detective” by LoopsLab on Envato Elements Thanks to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music and Superbrat for the outro music. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jack-shepherd8/support Learn more about your ad choices. BSCMC 023 - Abby and the Secret Society

E

It’s Abby’s first mystery, which means we’re hurtling at 99% of the speed of light toward the messy end of this thing wherein the birds eat our souls and The Gray Man who is behind it all nods once, lights a cigarette, and walks into the sunset. But there’s no time to think about that because this one’s very complicated! Ann and Ellen killed a man, Sergeant Johnson is more than willing to put a bunch of teens in mortal danger to solve the crime, and Cary Retlin just wants to watch the world burn. BSCMC 021 - Claudia and the Recipe for Danger

E

It’s Cake Week this week, and our star bakers – Claudia Kishi, Mary Anne Spier, and Shea Rodowsky – are getting ready to wow the judges with their rat poison and salt chocolate-cherry gateau. Better keep this one away from Mr. Spier though, because he’s got a strange glint in his eye that suggests he has other plans for this naughty little dessert. … And the devil laughs. BSCMC 020 - Mary Anne and the Zoo Mystery

E

The Entity is back! And we wrote an incredible mystery book. We think we’ll really get a kick out of where our episode goes this week. We filled the episode with laughs and sound effects and whales and human children! Listen to our screams of glee as we study the whales! Listen to the our chorus of shrieks! “The whales!”, we shout, “the whales!” We also discuss alternate worlds, bug balls, how we pronounce the word “emu’ and we made the whole episode epistolary because we needed cover for the fact that Tanner’s co-working space was so full of people, so don’t be surprised if we hear from our friends Goliath and Mark Markson. Wa-BSCMC 019 - Kristy and the Missing Fortune

E

It’s an Evil Episode this week, folks. Everything that should be right-side-up is upside down. Everything that should be clockwise is widdershins, and everything that should be “hoorah!” is just “Wa.” What does that mean for you? Well, for one thing the (Evil) boys talk about sports. A lot. And Bib Fortuna. And there’s an ancient evil lurking deep in Stoneybrook’s past that is reaching out its tendrils through the clocks to collapse time and space and swallow the BSC in the nameless void. So, not all that different from a non-evil episode, but please do be very careful with this one. You’re gonna love this episode 😉 (👈 this is not a come-on. We just genuinely think you’ll like this episode a lot. We had a lot of fun making it and you’ll probably have a lot of fun listening to it. 🤤 (👈 this is also not a come-one. Please don’t read into these emojis at all. We’re happily married men. We just want you to enjoy the show. 👍 (👈 okay, I’m not sure how you’d even interpret that one as a come-on, but just in case, I should clarify that the thumbs up is not a come-on in any way. W♥KCMC 017 - Dawn and the Halloween Mystery

E

Welcome to the City Council meeting for Palo City! Quite a full agenda this week, as we’ll need to decide whether or not to cancel Halloween this year and declare martial law, or whether to just allow these vicious Supernatural Murder Clowns to run rampant through our beautiful town, leaving rivers of blood and carnage in their wake. We will also be standing in judgement of Dawn Schaefer, because we’re all getting pretty tired of her inability to pick a coast to live on. And if anyone knows what’s behind that small, creepy door that definitely wasn’t in this room before, now would be a great time to speak up ... BSCMC 016 - Claudia and the Clue in the Photograph

E

Have you ever looked at a photograph that really made you laugh? Like, why were your eyes so red and what the hell was on Joey’s head? That’s precisely what Claudia and her friends in the Baby-Sitter’s Club did this week, except instead of red eyes, it was red hands! Because they caught someone stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars red-handed! And instead of wondering what what the hell is on Joey’s head, they’re wondering if head’s will role when the Stoneybrook PD finally catches up to the bank heist bandit. Also, Tanner has a kid now, which is pretty exciting. Sorry about all the Dad Talk™. BSCMC 015 - Kristy and the Vampires

E

Your two favorite disaffected but lovable Goths sink their Hot Topic fangs into more ‘90s horror this week, with a bone-chilling look at the famously “cursed” straight-to-TV vampire movie “Little Vampires.” Filmed on location in Stoneybrook, CT, where a number of near-fatal accidents disrupted the set (until the would-be-murderer was captured by a pair of meddling baby-sitters) “Little Vampires” stars heartthrob Carson Fraser (more famous for his role in “Miami Beach, USA”) and P.S. 162’s Derek Masters. The unsolved mystery here is why the Director chose to film this one in Stoneybrook, of all places, but it’s fair to say that the sleepy Connecticut town was … not prepared. BSCMC 013 - Mary Anne and the Library Mystery

E

We got ‘em! These dangerous Private Investigators have made their last mistake, and as soon as we release this damning report to the world, Mary Anne, Kristy, Stacey, Claudia, and Jessi will have their detectives’ licenses permanently revoked. Another job well done by the Internal Investigations team, who have uncovered countless procedural errors, including illegally assuming false identities to antagonize peaceful protestors, overzealous prosecution of fashion crimes, and endangering a small child. We also discovered something very spooky and evil lurking in the dark corners of this town, so we’d like to wrap this case right away so we can get out of here as soon as possible! Oh, and we’d like to recommend an extremely promising new recruit named Alan Gray for the team. This kid’s gonna go far. The fog is rolling in and the screamers are out for blood, so ghouls and grommets alike should paddle in, because when the surfer ghost is out to get you, you’re bound to get got. Also, there really wasn’t a B-plot this week, so don’t expect to hear much about one. Party on, Riptide Babies! And don’t forget to save a toke for me! (A toke of drugs, to be clear.) BSCMC 011 - Claudia and the Mystery of the Museum

E

There’s suddenly a massive, new, multi-story, premiere art gallery in Stoneybrook, which would be enough of a mystery by itself if it weren’t for the mystery of how many freaking crimes are getting committed in this darn thing! Not to mention the mystery of all the “Lewks” Baby-Sitters Club Art Director Hodges Soileau is serving this week and whether he is, in fact, Daddy. Then there’s the mystery of the Skeleton Faction, the number 1016, and what, precisely, Claudia is wearing this week. Fortunately we have two of the world’s biggest idiots on the case, so expect plenty of coherent answers to all of these questions! BSCMC 010 - Stacey and the Mystery Money

E

Bad news. Stacey is a crime girl again. She just can’t help herself, she’s as drawn to crime as she is hot and horny young men, like Terry/David Hoyt/Hawthorne. This week, the girls solve a mystery, but like, an actual mystery. Who is trying to pass off counterfeit bills all over Stoneybrook? Is it the nefarious English teacher, Mr. Fisk? Is it Stacey’s new lover? Is it the savior of the Dunmer people and the hero of Morrowind, the Nerevarine? You’ll have to listen to find out. BSCMC 009 - Kristy and the Haunted Mansion

E

The boys are elbows deep in Boethius this week as they take a trip with Kristy and the Krashers to a mansion that is haunted by the angry, vengeful ghost of The Patriarchy itself. Meanwhile, the Pike boys are living backwards, Mary Anne finds a runaway bride in a sewing shop, and a couple of experts drop by to offer their thoughtful, modern, and inspired expertise in what is sure to become an instant classic segment for our most fashion forward listeners. As usual, a surprising and possibly unwelcome amount of poetry, and this week … some insight into what may have happened on those fateful days leading up to June 10. This week, Jessi and Quint break it off. But not before they harass two master actors and probable lovers by accusing them of crimes and stalking them across New York City. Meanwhile, the boys talk fatherhood, the boys that make them horny, the Nickelodeon show Doug, old Don Hertzfeld shorts, and their mutual friend Gus. (Hi Gus!) BSCMC 007 - Dawn and the Disappearing Dogs

E

A searing indictment of Minnesota’s police force specifically, this brave episode goes where no previous episode has dared to go: Right to the source of all the True Crime that everybody’s doing these days! And that includes the international dong-thievery that is taking place in Stoneybrook itself, the cat kissing and the dog licking that is all too rampant in today’s society, and the equally troubling (if not technically illegal) way in which Mary Anne talks about Dawn’s mom’s perfectly nice tofu curry. Alright, people, let’s find out who’s been stealing all these dogs! (Spoilers for Beastmaster.) BSCMC 006 - Mystery at Claudia's House

E

“Mystery” is generous for this book because there was not really much of a mystery, but it was a pretty fun book and discussion! When Janine “The Janenius” Kishi begins to act strange around her family, they begin to wonder if she’s fallen in with a bad crowd. But, she hasn’t. She just has a super hunky boyfriend now called Jerry. Mystery solved. Lots of X eye for the Y guy discussion, so all the ~fashionistas~ out there in Baby Nation should get a kick out of Jack and Tanner’s complete misunderstanding of all things fashion. BSCMC 005 - Mary Anne and the Secret in the Attic

E

Prepare to dive headfirst into a world of intrigue and MYSTERY! To unlock the SECRETS of Mary Anne’s origins; to decipher the PUZZLE of the universe’s most mysterious clock; the RIDDLE of Logan’s nipples; the ENIGMA of the Warp Whistles in Super Mario Bros. 3; and the REBUS that is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most MYSTERIOUS film. Most importantly, prepare to solve the perplexing CONUNDRUM of whether the boys are going to find an insanely complex and breathtakingly chaotic way of doing segments, which are traditionally supposed to provide structural simplicity and order! And, of course, prepare yourself for an answer to the greatest MYSTERY of all: What on Earth are these boys going to talk about now that they’ve read all the main canon books and Super Specials????? E

The boys originally wanted to buy themselves a week to figure out what they’re going to do now that they’re out of Super Special books, but boy did they have fun watching the Baby-Sitters Club movie, or as Jack repeatedly called it, “the book.” Ann, Dalene, and Susan DeSanto confirmed so many popular theories this week, and they did so VISUALLY. BSCSC 015 - Baby-sitters' European Vacation

This is a time for sobriety and reflection as the boys gaze bravely into oblivion. Shattered by the loss of a dear, innocent friend who was betrayed by those who should have protected him, they must step forward, alone, into a future devoid of Super Specials. But before they do, a loving look back at this really great final book! Jessi has committed a series of cold-blooded murders, Alan Gray’s joined the Stoneybrook Liberation Front, and Kristy’s doing kissing and arm stuff with a Canadian! This is Pete Lerangis’s swan song and his magnum opus and it is so much better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. BSCSC 014 - BSC in the USA

E

Wow! This book was a banger. You’ve never heard two boys who are more excited to talk about a BSC book. The girls FINALLY make it to America, and they do it all! They confront America’s dark past at a plantation turned slavery museum. They marvel at the splendor of the Grand Canyon. They go to the MALL OF AMERICA! Also, maybe it’s because we’re kinda getting down to the wire and don’t have any real plans for what comes next, but we get a little punchy, and when we get punchy, we tend to sing. A lot. BSCSC 013 - Aloha, Baby-sitters!

E

Stacey’s chopper is down and she’s missing in the jungles of Hawaii. Meanwhile, back in Stoneybrook, Mallory has alienated a potential client by mishandling a tantrum. Are these two crises treated with equal gravity and concern in this novel? Yes. Because this is the Baby-Sitters Club, and, frankly, Stacey is expendable. Fair warning: This one’s rated R, not just because of the helicopter carnage, but because there is a surprising amount of Arm Stuff, and some EXTREMELY enlightening new rules for the delicate dance known as Da Bonky. BSCC Live: Super Mystery 001: Baby-Sitters Haunted House

E

Live at Littlefield in Brooklyn, NY, the boys dig deep into one of the greatest mysteries of all time: What the heck is going on with ghostwriter Jeanne Betancourt and her twisted blood orgies? It may just be part of her writing process for these Super Mysteries, in which case it worked! Plenty of spooky ghosts, scary vampires, and unsavory teenage boys in this one, not to mention a whole mess of parades, because Stoneybrook has finally gone fully off the deep end. Everyone remembers the 24 to 72 hours immediately preceding the first time they ever met Kristin Amanda Thomas. BSCSC 010 - Sea City, Here We Come!

E

Stacey and Mary Anne are headed back to the scene of the crime. To the place where it all started, all those years ago – to the locus for those half-forgotten events of that tumultuous summer in Sea City when Stacey went boy crazy, a condition that affects her to this very day. And the consequences of this return to the past – of this “recherche du temps perdu” – will be cataclysmic. A great storm is coming. A hurricane. A tempest of rage and hurt and remembrance that threatens to consume everything in its path. And with the darkness preceding the deluge come other dark things. Things that crawl and creep and grasp with their tendrils and their tentacles. Things that devour. Here we come, Sea City. And may Heaven protect us from what follows. BSCSC 008 - Baby-sitters at Shadow Lake

E

Shadow Lake holds many mysteries – including a disappearing family that haunts its islands and a big scary monster that lurks in in its depths – but Stacey McGill and Sam Thomas’s fiery, tumultuous romance is the biggest, juiciest mystery of all. Why is Stacey interested in Sam even though he insists on calling her “Dahling”? Why has Hodges painted Stacey with a pained grimace on her face as she and Sam dance? The boys dig into these pressing questions, with a short break to say a painful goodbye to a sad, old aquatic friend. Recommended reading this week: The 12th Century “Chansons de Geste” (preferably in the Old French), Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales” and “Troilus and Criseyde,” and “1,001 Email Closings and Valedictions,” by Flavio Olcese. 1998: The Podcast 001

E

Welcome to pilot two of three! This week, Jack and Tanner go back to the first good year, the last good year, and possibly the only good year in living history: 1998. Each week on 1998: The Podcast, the boys will select some fondly remembered pieces of media from that fine year to discuss. This week, the selections are: The REM album "Up" Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition The Buffy the Vampire Slayer season two finale "Becoming" parts one and two I'll go ahead and warn you in advance that your opinion on Tanner may be forever tarnished due to his views on the two Buffy episodes he watched and the character assassination he does against Willow. BSCC: On Christmas Eve

E

For this bonus Holiday Special episode, the boys delve into a book that Ann has been trying to keep secret from us. A book so dangerous that it may hold the key to the door that forever opens our Snow Globe world to the powerful alien presence that skulks on its periphery, sniffing at the human souls it longs to possess, reaching with its tendriled hands towards all the little girls and boys building snowmen and roasting chestnuts over an open fire – oblivious to the terrors that lurk just a chimney's length away. The book is Ann M. Martin's standalone classic, "On Christmas Eve," and the ancient horror is Santa Himself. He's real, and he's coming to get you. The BSC is undeniable this week. Fine, fresh, fierce, and they’ve got it on lock. Except of course when Stacey is committing Surf Crimes, Car Crimes, and a whole host of other felonious activities. Or when Mallory’s committing Fashion Crimes and Hair Crimes. Or when Kristy’s just being kind of generally overbearing. BSCSC 004 - Baby-Sitters' Island Adventure

E

The Baby-Sitters Club Super Special #4: Baby-Sitters' Island Adventure chronicles the peripatetic appointments and encounters of Claudia Kishi and Dawn Schafer in Stoneybrook in the course of an ordinary day, 10 June 1991. "Claudia" is the Latinised name of Odysseus, the hero of Homer's epic poem the Odyssey, and the novel establishes a series of parallels between the poem and the novel, with structural correspondences between the characters and experiences of Claudia/Dawn and Odysseus, Becca Ramsey and Penelope, and Jamie Newton and Telemachus, in addition to events and themes of the early 20th-century context of modernism, Stoneybrook, and Connecticut's relationship to Britain. The novel is highly allusive and also imitates the styles of different periods of English literature.
