Concussion Protocol Could Doom the Chiefs, Defense Doesn't Win Championships in the NFL & Is Ben Simmons on the Move?
On today's episode, Jason kicks things off with a quick thought on the health of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. His status for the AFC Championship game is unclear at the moment, but based on what Andy Reid is saying (or not saying), it sure feels like they're willing to do anything to get him on the field. On the NBA front, James Harden is flourishing with the Brooklyn Nets, but the bigger story may be what's going on with the team he didn't get traded to: The Philadelphia 76ers. According to reports, the Sixers thought they had a Ben Simmons-for-Harden deal in place until Houston pulled out. That may have been the final straw for Simmons. He seems to be lacking confidence and his overall demeanor just feels off even when the team is winning. They couldn't get the Harden deal done but don't be surprised if Philadelphia decides to deal Simmons by the deadline. Back to the NFL, Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith could really learn a lot from Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and the way he navigated his way around Green Bay. The situations are similar in a few ways, and if Smith is willing to put in the work, he could have some success. Finally, Jason drops a couple of advanced stats that don't bode well for the New York Jets and the Los Angeles Chargers. According to Football Outsiders' DVOA, four of the top 5 offenses in the NFL are still in the playoffs. By contrast, only two of the top 15 defenses are left. This isn't your Dad's NFL; Defense doesn't win championships these days, offense does. So if you're a fan of the Jets or the Chargers, you may want to pump the breaks on all that excitement. Drew Brees Goes Out with a Whimper, Rough Night for the Ravens & More NFL Divisional Round Reaction
On today's episode, Jason brings you wall-to-wall commentary on all the NFL Divisional Playoff round action. First, let's pour one out for Drew Brees who delivered what may have been his worst performance of the decade in what was likely the final of his career on Sunday night against Tampa Bay. Brees had 3 costly turnovers that ultimately sealed the Saints' fate, and Tom Brady and the Buccaneers were happy to capitalize. Speaking of Brady, he wasn't great, but he made the plays when his team needed them the most and walked away with the victory (as he usually does). All of that set the stage for the NFC Championship Game matchup that we've all been hoping more: Tom Brady vs Aaron Rodgers. Get your popcorn ready! In the early game, the Kansas City Chiefs found a way to get the win over the Cleveland Browns but the big story is the health of Patrick Mahomes. The reigning Super Bowl MVP left the game early with a concussion and now his availability for the AFC Championship Game is up in the air. Until we know if Mahomes is going to play or not, you should avoid betting on that game. Moving over to Saturday's action, the big story has to be the Ravens' coughing up the game to the Buffalo Bills. Justin Tucker never misses field goals in the playoffs... and yet he missed 2 on Saturday; Lamar Jackson never throws red zone interceptions... and yet he threw one that essentially ended the game. The Bills beat the Ravens fair and square, but given the way the game played out, Jason would bet on Baltimore again if they had a rematch. Finally, Jason closes the show with some thoughts on the latest head coaching hires around the NFL. The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers both made their choices official, but there's only one that fans should feel good about. Take a listen to find out which. 01/16/2021 – The Jason McIntyre Show – NFL Divisional Round Preview, Deshaun Watson Wants Out, PLUS Brian Costello, Brian T. Smith and sports betting guru T.A!
Jason McIntyre is back in action and dives deep into the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs. Jason weighs in on another tumultuous week for Houston sports as reports allege that Deshaun Watson wants out of the Texans organization and the Rockets trade James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets. Plus, he says the Jets and Jaguars made slam dunk hires in Robert Saleh and Urban Meyer! Jags Can Win With Urban Meyer, Jets Put Robert Saleh in a Tough Spot & The Athletic's Mike Sando
On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by sharing his thoughts on the two big head coaching hires in the NFL: Robert Saleh to the New York Jets and Urban Meyer to the Jacksonville Jaguars. On one hand, it's hard not to be excited that one of the great defensive coordinators in the NFL has chosen to come to New York and bring some much-needed stability to the franchise. On the other, the fact that Saleh has a defensive background could come back to bite him in the long run. If his new offensive coordinator is a success then chances are that guy will get a head coaching gig of his own and Saleh will be stuck with a revolving door of OC's; if the new coordinator is a failure then it's likely the team will struggle and Saleh himself might get fired. The path to success for Meyer in Jacksonville is much more straight-forward. The AFC South is a wide open division and the Jags - with Trevor Lawrence at quarterback - could find themselves in the playoff hunt inside of two years. In fact, Jason argues that if Meyer succeeds the way many expect he will then we could see him being mentioned as one of the greatest coaches in football history - college or pro. Later, The Athletic senior writer and podcast host Mike Sando swings by to discuss his how his famed QB Tiers came to be and why he never includes rookies on the list, how the presumed Urban Meyer-Trevor Lawrence pairing could work with the Jacksonville Jaguars, what's gone wrong with Sam Darnold as the quarterback for the New York Jets, why the biggest difference between Aaron Rodgers last year and this year has more to do with his teammates cleaning up their mistakes around of him than any massive jump in his own play (he's always been great), why history says it's so hard to bet against Andy Reid coming out of a bye... but this COVID year makes things unbelievably tricky as they head into this weekend's matchup with the Cleveland Browns, what we can expect in the trilogy match between Drew Brees' Saints and Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which NFL head coach could be the weakest link moving forward in these playoffs given how stacked the field is, if the Baltimore Ravens defense can contain the unbelievably hot Buffalo Bills offense, why he expects Josh Allen to start next season as a Tier 2 QB even after the impressive year he's had thus far, and much more! Finally, Jason closes the show with a very special NFL Divisional Playoff round edition of the Best Bet. James Harden is Headed to Brooklyn & #NBATwitter pioneer Cuffs The Legend
On today's episode, Jason shares his thoughts on the blockbuster trade that sent James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets. The Houston Rockets made the puzzling decision to bypass a trade for Ben Simmons in favor of a bunch of draft picks and the expiring contract of Victor Oladipo. It felt more like a cost-cutting move for Houston than anything. As it relates to the Nets, Jason argues that the addition of Harden doesn't actually make Brooklyn demonstrably better. The on-court fit between Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving is clunky at best, and you could say the addition of Harden feels more like insurance against another Kyrie sabbatical. Even with that trio, Jasons says the Nets are probably the 3rd best team in the Eastern Conference. Later, #NBATwitter pioneer Cuffs The Legend swings by to discuss how a lack of maturity of focus derailed his chances at playing professional basketball, why he's not surprised to see the young Atlanta Hawks roster going through a rough patch right now, why some NBA players had an issue with Steph Curry's meteoric rise to superstardom, why he's genuinely concerned about the mental well-being of Kyrie Irving and why he's been so confused by the decisions Kyrie has made since he won an NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers, how he and LeBron James were able to develop a solid relationship away from basketball, why he agrees with Draymond Green that there are some folks in the sports media who don't really understand the game of basketball, why he really wants to see Bradley Beal traded to a legitimate team like the Los Angeles Lakers, why he never thought anybody could even come close to Michael Jordan... until he saw LeBron James, and much more! 'Kanye' Irving Strikes Again & Pro Poker Player and Sports Gambler David Baker
On today's episode, Jason kicks things off with a quick recap of Tuesday's NBA action, and then does a deep dive into the latest drama surrounding Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving. After deciding last week that he needed time away from the team for 'personal reasons', Kyrie was spotted partying at a nightclub with sister. He then doubled-down on the shenanigans by appearing on a Zoom for a local politician at the exact time his Nets teammates were playing a game. Kyrie clearly doesn't think the rules apply to him. In fact, Jason argues, the reason why guys like Kyrie and James Harden feel entitled to do whatever they want is because Kawhi Leonard set the precedent two years ago. Kawhi decided he didn't want to play back-to-backs and the Toronto Raptors had no choice but to allow it. Likewise, Kyrie has decided he can take weeks off during the regular season and the Nets can't do anything to stop him. Later, professional poker player and sports gambler David Baker swings by to discuss how his life has changed after he won the famed Westgate SuperContest this year, how he caught the gambling bug at an early age and eventually became a professional poker player, why he believes almost anyone could become at least a good poker player, how the 'back room' poker games differ from the casino games he normally plays, how he and his partner were able to navigate the NFL gambling lines on their way to a first place finish in the SuperContest and a second place finish in the Circa Contest, how the difficulties brought forth as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic actually helped him at the betting window, why he found it beneficial not to talk much about the NFL gambling lines early in the week, how being early on teams like the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts helped him win at the betting window throughout the season, why it's so important to be fluid in your opinions when betting on NFL games throughout the season, why he has some early NFL Divisional round betting leans but he's not quite ready to make the bets just yet, why home field advantage matters a whole lot more in the postseason than it did in the regular season, and much more! Alabama Wins Again, the Truth on Devonta Smith and Justin Fields as NFL Prospects & What Went Wrong for Doug Pederson
On today's show, Jason brings you a full recap of Alabama's blowout win over Ohio State in the College Football Playoff championship game. The Crimson Tide won by 28 points – and it really wasn’t even that close as they dominated in all facets of the game. In fact, Jason argues that games like prove that we’d all be better off with an expanded College Football Playoff format. Jason also discusses whether or not this Alabama squad is really the greatest team in college football history, and if Nick Saban can rehabilitate yet another down-on-his-luck coaching candidate now that former Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien appears set to take over as offensive coordinator next season. Later, Jason does a deep dive on the game’s biggest stars – Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields – and tells us what we should expect from them at the next level. Both players are destined to go in the top 10, but are we sure that both are destined to become NFL stars? The answer may surprise you. Finally, Jason closes the show by sharing his thoughts on the Philadelphia Eagles’ peculiar decision to fire head coach Doug Pederson on Monday. Did they forget that he won them a Super Bowl just 3 years ago? Something doesn’t smell right; You don’t get rid of a Super Bowl coach that quickly unless there’s more going on behind the scenes. All signs point to Pederson becoming the ‘fall guy’ for someone in the front office. Browns Shock the World, Big Ben is Washed, Brady vs. Brees III & Alabama-Ohio State Preview
On today's episode, Jason brings you a full recap of the NFL's Super Wild Card Weekend action. First, how about those Cleveland Browns?!? Baker Mayfield and the boys steamrolled the Pittsburgh Steelers in what was easily the biggest upset of the weekend. Ben Roethlisberger looked washed and Mike Tomlin was completely out-coached by an interim guy on the opposite sideline. Sticking in the AFC, let's raise a glass for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson for earning the first playoff victory of his young career against the Tennessee Titans. What's more, Jackson was able to secure his first double-digit come-from-behind win on his career as well. It was a big day overall for the reigning MVP. In the NFC, after both the New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured fairly easy wins in their Wild Card matchup, the stage is now set for Tom Brady vs. Drew Brees 3 in what should definitely be the marquee game of the Divisional round. Brady seems to be peaking at the right time and the Saints defense is still as nasty as ever so this one could be a classic. Later, Producer Rob joins the show to discuss what was easily the biggest story to take place off the field: Deshaun Watson's growing frustration with the Houston Texans. According to several insiders, not only does Watson want out, he's already got a new AFC landing spot in mind. Don't look now but the NBA's Player Empowerment Era may have infiltrated the NFL. Finally, Jason closes the show with a very special College Football Playoff Championship Game edition of the Best Bet. Joe Public is all over Ohio State in this one, so Jason would have to be crazy to take Alabama here, right? Take a listen to find out! Deshaun Watson is Ticked at the Texans, NFL Wild Card Weekend Wagering & former NFL lineman Ephraim Salaam
On today's episode, Jason opens things up by taking a quick verbal victory lap following reports that Deshaun Watson is upset at the Houston Texans front office and may request a trade. Few guys in sports media are able to read the forrest through the trees quite like J-Mac so it's really no surprise that he saw this coming yesterday. Plus, former NFL offensive lineman turned film producer Ephraim Salaam swings by to discuss the disconnect that seems to exist between NFL franchises and the players/coaches as it relates to COVID protocol, why he doesn't think being 'young and rich' should be excuse for having a cavalier attitude towards safety, why having a 'worst case scenario' mindset isn't always a bad thing when you're dealing with things that are out of your control, why his high school basketball coach had a big issue with his parents when he was younger, how an unfortunate coaching change is what prevented him from playing both Division 1-level basketball and football throughout his entire college career, how he ended up getting his start in sports media as a rookie in the NFL, how and he his longtime friend Deon Taylor came to form one of the most powerful production groups in Hollywood, why he's making the transition from film producer to film writer, his biggest issues with today's social media generation, his Super Bowl prediction, and much more! All Eyes on DC, the Texans are Wasting Deshaun Watson's Time & NBA Wednesday Headlines
On today's episode, Jason opens things up with a quick thought on the group of rioters who breached the US Capitol building on Wednesday. Although we do make a concerted effort to stay out of politics on the show, when terrorists threaten our democracy, who won the game and whether or not your 3-team teaser hit just don't seem as important. Later, Jason does a deep dive into Deshaun Watson's cryptic tweet following the Houston Texans' decision to hire Nick Caserio as their new general manager. It's impossible to know for sure if Watson's 'some things never change' tweet was about the hire, but the timing definitely seems to fit. The decisions to hire Caserio (who wasn't on their search firm's list of preferred candidates) and not even interview Eric Bieniemy for their vacant head coaching job (who Watson has long-preferred) makes one thing very clear: the Texans don't give a damn what their franchise quarterback thinks. They're going to keep doing what they've always done, and they're going to continue to waste the best years of Watson's career in the process. The NFL would be better off if Watson would just force his way out of town; his time is far too valuable to be spent working for such a clueless franchise. Finally, Jason closes the show by sharing his thoughts on a few of the biggest headlines to come out of Wednesday night's action, including the first back-to-back appearance by Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard. COVID Hits the College Football and NFL Playoffs & the Silver Lining for Sports Bettors
On today’s episode, Jason kicks things off with a quick thought on Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith winning the Heisman Trophy. Kudos to Smith, but does anyone else feel like the whole thing snuck up on us a bit this year? With so many games getting postponed or cancelled throughout the season, it was really hard at times to keep up with who was doing what. It's no wonder then that 3 of the top 5 vote getters all played for Alabama. Sticking with college football, rumor has it that a COVID outbreak within the Ohio State program could delay the College Football Playoff Championship game next week. Or, if you believe Nick Saban's daughter, the whole thing is just a conspiracy to give Justin Fields more time to recover from his rib injury. Unfortunately, COVID has thrown a monkey wrench into the NFL's Playoff plans as well as several members of the Cleveland Browns - including their head coach and one of the best offensive linemen - have tested positive and will be forced to miss this weekend's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tough break for Browns. The silver lining in all of this, however, is that both of these COVID outbreaks gives sports bettors a massive edge at the betting window. It's harsh but true. Finally, Jason closes the show with an in-depth preview of this weekend's NFL Wild Card Playoff game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Washington Football Team. Washington's Chase Young is talking a lot of trash, but can he and his teammates back it up and pull off the upset? Jason's answer may surprise you. Ranking the NFL Head Coaching Vacancies & ESPN host Jorge Sedano
On today's episode, Jason ranks what he believes to be the best NFL head coaching vacancies thus far. Is the Chargers job with superstar quarterback Justin Herbert the best gig available? How far has the New York Jets job fallen now that Trevor Lawrence appears headed to the Jacksonville Jaguars instead? A few of the rankings - and the reasoning why - may surprise you. Later, ESPN television and radio host Jorge Sedano swings by to discuss why he's not ready to pull the plug on Tua Tagovailoa as the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback after just one season, why he believes Tua shouldn't mind having Ryan Fitzpatrick as his backup again next season, why he believes the Dolphins are still in a rebuild despite their 10-win season in 2020, why he still has some doubts about Trevor Lawrence being a sure-fire franchise savior in the NFL, which NFL Wild Card Weekend games he's betting on, why he expects Pat Riley and the Miami Dolphins to at least kick the tires on James Harden, why he wouldn't mind including Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson in a deal for Harden, why LeBron James reminds him of Neo in The Matrix at this point in his NBA career, why he believes the Los Angeles Clippers and the Brooklyn Nets are the biggest threats to the Los Angeles Lakers this season, and much more! No Issues with the Eagles Tank Job & NFL Wild Card Weekend Playoff Preview
On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by explaining why he had zero issue with Doug Pederson tanking the Philadelphia Eagles' Sunday Night Football game against Washington (and thus keeping the New York Giants out of the postseason). The Eagles did what they had to do to improve their draft positioning. Where was all the outrage when the New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars were tanking for Trevor Lawrence? People were actually applauding it then. But now because the Eagles did it in their last game of the season folks have an issue? Stop it. Later, Producer Rob joins the show to help Jason preview this weekend's NFL Wild Card Weekend Playoff games. All signs point to the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers cruising to easy wins over the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns, respectively. The Titans play zero defense and the Browns are too one-dimensional to keep with those two heavy-hitters in the AFC North. In the NFC, as crazy as it sounds, the Los Angeles Rams may be better off benching their franchise quarterback Jared Goff if they plan on beating the Seattle Seahawks. Goff has been brutal for the most of the season and now he's dealing with a broken hand. Bills-Colts and Saints-Bears aren't all that interesting, but the sneaky game-of-the-week may actually be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against Washington. Nobody actually expects Tom Brady and the boys to lose, but recent history is definitely not on their side. If you're a betting man, the smart play would be to tease that number way down. Finally, Jason closes the show by explaining why he's hoping that his beloved New York Jets buck conventional wisdom and take BYU's Zach Wilson in the draft instead of Ohio State's Justin Fields. Fields is a superb talent but the gap between he and Wilson isn't as big as you think, and the Jets would be wise to trade down, accumulate even more assets, and take the BYU signal caller as their quarterback of the future. Best Bets for New Years Weekend & Super Bowl champion coach Eric Mangini
On today's episode, former NFL head coach Eric Mangini swings by to discuss what it's like raising his boys in the middle of a pandemic, how tough it is for a NFL head coach heading into Black Monday, what might be going through Bill Belichick's mind as he heads towards a rare offseason without a playoff appearance, if the overall failures of the Belichick Coaching Tree could end up hurting Josh McDaniels during this hiring cycle, why Justin Herbert's rookie season success could actually be the reason why Anthony Lynn loses his job, why you have to consider the salary cap and draft pick situations before choosing which head coaching gig to take, why he believes the New York Jets head coaching job is still a great job even without Trevor Lawrence, the perception that you have to fire an 'offensive guy' to coach your team these days, if he wants to make a return to an NFL sideline some day, why he's very high on Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll as a head coaching candidate, and much more! Steelers' Strange Decision, NBA Overreactions, & CFB Playoff preview with USA Today's Dan Wolken
On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by sharing a quick thought on the Pittsburgh Steelers' decision to bench Ben Roethlisberger in Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns. It's an interesting decision considering the Browns are in a win-and-they're-in playoff scenario. On the NBA front, Jason tells us why you shouldn't overreact to the Milwaukee Bucks beating the Miami Heat by 47 points. The last time we saw the Bucks in a game that really mattered they were getting swept out of the playoffs by those very same Heat. And while we're at it, let's all cool it on the Steph Curry slander. He's surrounding by a bunch of G-Leaguers right now. Later, USA Today Sports national columnist Dan Wolken swings to discuss how the pandemic may have changed the bowl system as we know it moving forward, if we can expect Notre Dame to have a better showing against Alabama in the semifinal than they did against Clemson in the ACC Championship game, how the disjointed Big Ten season could be the biggest reason why Ohio State doesn't seem to have any momentum heading into their semifinal matchup against Clemson, if Justin Field's draft stock has taken a hit given the way his play has tapered off a bit down the stretch, why it's hard to knock Dabo Swinney for his critical comments about Ohio State, why it's clear that the College Football Playoff committee has an affinity for the marquee schools, how this pandemic has exposed the NCAA in many ways, the latest on the Jim Harbaugh contract negotiations at Michigan, if we should believe the rumors that Urban Meyer is being courted by several NFL teams, if Trevor Lawerence is the greatest college quarterback he's ever seen, and much more! The End of Cam Newton, How Dwayne Haskins Could Hurt Justin Fields & FS1 host Joy Taylor
It's Episode 100 of the Straight Fire Podcast! On today's show, Jason explains why Cam Newton's benching on Monday Night Football against the Buffalo Bills is the nail in the coffin for the former MVP's NFL career. Cam will be hard-pressed to find another starting gig next season after the way he played this season. On the flip side, Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has turned quarterback Josh Allen into a star, and he could find himself as the next 'hot' name during the NFL Coaching Carousel this offseason. Finally, Jason tells us why the end of the Dwayne Haskins Saga in Washington could scare off some teams from drafting Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields next year. Haskins is just the latest OSU quarterback to flame out in the NFL and there are bound to be a few general managers who believe Fields is next in line. Plus, FS1 host Joy Taylor swings by to discuss what it's like working in sports media in the middle of a pandemic, why she doesn't think James Harden would be a great fit with the Miami Heat culture and why she expects the Heat to take a step back this season, why she believes the Brooklyn Nets are the team to beat in the Eastern Conference, why it's hard to compare this LeBron James-led Lakers team to the LeBron-led Heat team from back in the day, why she'd prefer if the Miami Dolphins just let Tua Tagovailoa fail than let Ryan Fitzpatrick come in late in game, why she believes it's important for networks and talent to embrace the growing popularity of streaming services, why she believes we could see an expanded College Football Playoff for the 2021 season, and much more! Concerned About the Chiefs, Can't Put All the Blame on Baker Mayfield & More Raiders Embarrassment
On today's episode, Jason shares his thoughts on the biggest headlines to come out of a wild weekend in the NFL. Kansas City had yet another nail-biting win on Sunday, and Jason says it's to start worrying a bit about Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. In an ideal world you want your team to be peaking heading into the postseason, but the Chiefs seem to be stuck in mud. Even worse, they appear almost disinterested on a quarter-to-quarter basis. If they don't snap out of quick they could find themselves getting knocked out before the Super Bowl. The New York Jets got their second win of the season over a depleted Cleveland Browns roster, and rather than pile on Baker Mayfield for letting it happen Jason says you should cut the quarterback some slack. The Browns didn't lose to the Jets because Mayfield was bad; they lost because a handful of his teammates made a terrible decision involving a hot tub. Jason also takes a long look at the NFC playoff picture and explains why he's really down on the Washington Football Team heading into Week 17. Between Dwayne Haskins and Taylor Heinicke, Washington may have the worst starting quarterback options in the NFL as the face a possible postseason play-in game. Later, Producer Rob joins the show to explain how Jon Gruden and the Las Vegas Raiders defense managed to ruin what had been a very lovely Christmas weekend in his household, and the guys discuss what - if anything - the Raiders can do to turn things around moving forward. Finally, Jason closes the show with a quick lookahead at the Monday Night Football clash between the Buffalo Bills and the New England Patriots. Houston Needs to Trade Harden Immediately & How to Make Money Betting on Christmas Weekend
On today's episode, Jason shares a quick thought on the latest report that James Harden was spotted without a mask at yet another strip club this week (Er, "a night club with strippers present"), and explains why the Houston Rockets are only hurting themselves by waiting to trade him. The longer they wait the crazier Harden's antics will become, and thus the worse the trade offers will get. Later, Jason gives an extended Christmas weekend edition of The Best Bet featuring all of the NBA's Christmas Day games, the NFL's Saints-Vikings matchup on Christmas, and the rest of the NFL's Saturday triple-header. NBA Opening Night Reaction & ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst
On today's episode, Jason shares his thoughts on Tuesday's NBA Opening Night action. The Brooklyn Nets blew out the Golden State Warriors, but it's just one game. The big takeaway here is that Kevin Durant looked like the KD of old. If he can stay healthy, the Nets could be a legitimate title threat. In the nightcap, the Los Angeles Clippers spoiled the Los Angeles Lakers 'Ring Night' and walked way with the win. Paul George looked good and the Lakers flashed great depth so it was a good sign for both teams. Overall, NBA Opening Night was a success for all parties involved (except Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. Yikes!) Plus, ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst swings by to discuss the best and worst parts of doing his job during a pandemic, how the once 'spicy' 2021 NBA free agent class has taken a massive hit, why he's not surprised at how slow moving the James Harden trade market has been and why he could see a team like the Denver Nuggets make a run at Harden, why he's not betting on Kawhi Leonard leaving the Los Angeles Clippers this summer and why Montrezl Harrell decided to leave the Clippers for the Lakers, why he's all-in on Zion Williamson this upcoming season, what he's expecting from LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in their quest to repeat as NBA champions, why he believes Bradley Beal is the only other superstar outside of Kawhi that other teams are keeping tabs on, and much more! The Steelers are Stuck in Mud & #NBATwitter King Josiah Johnson
On today's episode, Jason shares a quick thought on the Pittsburgh Steelers ugly loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football. After starting the season 11-0, the Steelers have lost three in a row and Ben Roethlisberger looks absolutely washed. The defense has slipped a bit and the offense looks abysmal. Thanks to their hot start to the season they'll still make the playoffs but they have the making of a one-and-done postseason team, at best. Plus, The King of #NBATwitter Josiah Johnson swings by to discuss what it was like growing up in and around the UCLA Basketball program, what it was like was living with UCLA Basketball royalty (his father, Marques Johnson and his brother, Kris Johnson), how the so-called 'locker room culture' helped him develop the comedic skills that have made him the undisputed King of #NBATwitter, his biggest issues with Twitter trolls and social media tough guys, why he understands why Kevin Durant felt compelled to create social media burner accounts, why he's still picking the Los Angeles Lakers to win the NBA championship... even if he's a little worried about the quick turnaround, why he has a big problem with people who continuously try to discredit LeBron James' accomplishments, why he's been so impressed with Luka Doncic and the overall globalization of basketball, why he has a ton of respect for LaVar Ball and the job he's done raising Lonzo and LaMelo, what it was like playing pickup ball against guys like Kevin Garnett back in the day, and much more! Jets Win... but Lose Out on Trevor Lawrence, the Chiefs are the Warriors of the NFL & Get Used to Wentz on the Bench
On today's episode, a clearly despondent Jason opens things up by sharing his thoughts on the New York Jets upset victory over the Los Angeles Rams... and dropping them out of the #1 slot in the upcoming Trevor Lawrence Sweepstakes. Lawrence is arguably the best quarterback prospect to enter the NFL Draft in decades, and all the Jets had to do to get him was keep losing. They couldn't even do that right. This could end up being a blessing in disguise for Jets fans since it should allow them to trade down from the #2 slot and build out the rest of their roster, but the loss of Lawrence still stings. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the New Orleans Saints in what some were calling a Super Bowl preview, but after the Jets win the game just didn't seem to have the same type of buzz. In fact, we've almost become desensitized by Kansas City's greatness. In many ways, the Chiefs are like the Steph Curry/Kevin Durant Golden State Warriors of the NFL: it's only a story when they lose. The third biggest story to come down on Sunday actually took place before any of the games had even started. Carson Wentz isn't happy at all to be glued to the bench in Philadelphia, but with the way Jalen Hurts has played the last two games he may not have a choice. He hasn't played like a top quarterback in a few years and his contract is borderline untradeable. It's too early to say that Hurts is The Guy in Philadelphia, but it seems pretty clear at this point that it's definitely not Wentz. Later, Jason tells us why he wasn't shocked at all to see Notre Dame selected for the College Football Playoff even after they got blasted by Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. College football is big business - and the Fighting Irish are good for business. The sooner sports fans accept this fact the better off we'll all be. Justin Herbert is a Stud, The Raiders are Done & CBS Sports analyst Danny Kanell
On today's episode, Jason and Producer Rob share their thoughts on the Los Angeles Chargers' ugly win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday Night Football. It didn't look like either team wanted to win that game. On the plus side, we can all rest a little bit easier knowing that stud quarterback Justin Herbert won't be shackled by the wildly mediocre Anthony Lynn. Plus, CBS Sports analyst Danny Kanell swings by to explain how he ended up being a star quarterback at Florida State even though he didn’t start playing football until his junior year of high school, how playing baseball and basketball as a youth helped make him a better football player, why he believes Trevor Lawrence should be excited about the possibility of getting drafted by the New York Jets, why he’s so excited for this weekend is SEC championship game between Alabama and Florida, why he believes this would’ve been the perfect year to have an expanded College Football Playoff field, why he doesn't expect Cam Newton to be the New England Patriots starting quarterback next season, why he believes Jim Harbaugh will be back at Michigan next season, and much more! Later, Jason closes the show with a very special College Football and NFL Weekend edition of the Best Bet. He's been riding a hot streak as of late so you better get on the money train! Giannis Staying in Milwaukee is Bad for the NBA & Actor Jerry O'Connell
On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by sharing his thoughts on Giannis Antetokounmpo's decision to forego free agency and sign a supermax contract to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks. On the surface it sounds like a heartwarming story, but the reality is that player movement and the formation of Super Teams is what makes the NBA such a hot topic year round. By staying in Milwaukee, Giannis has removed a piece off the board and actually hurt the League in the process. Plus, actor Jerry O'Connell swings by to discuss what it was like working alongside bombshells like Mariah Carey and Jennifer Love Hewitt, how he still gets recognized for some of the more iconic roles he had in the past, how he caught the fantasy football bug when he worked on the movie 'Jerry Maguire' (even if he's thinking about quitting after this season), why a bad beat involving the New York Yankees back in the day is why he longer gambles on sports these days, why he as a long-suffering New York Jets fan has a soft spot for the Los Angeles Chargers now that he's moved to Los Angeles, what it's like to talk sports with the Hall of Famers in his neighborhood like Willie McGinest and Eric Dickerson, and much more! Lamar Jackson's 'Cramp' Game, The NFL Game of the Year & a Lesson on Failure
On today's episode, Jason shares his thoughts on the Baltimore Ravens' wild victory over the Cleveland Browns on Monday Night Football. This game had EVERYTHING. Lamar Jackson had to leave the game with 'cramps', or 'diarrhea' if you believe the folks on Twitter, but was forced back into action when his backup injured his leg with less than two minutes left in the game. Naturally, Jackson threw the go-ahead touchdown pass on his first play back. Not to be outdone, Baker Mayfield led his team right back and scored the game-tying touchdown with less than a minute to go. Jackson then came back and marched the Ravens down the field AGAIN where Justin Tucker hit a 55-yard field goal with only seconds left on the clock. As if that ending wasn't wild enough, the Browns botched the lateral on the game's final play and fumbled out of the end zone for a safety. So not only did the Ravens get the win in dramatic fashion, but they covered the 3-point spread. Like we said, this game had EVERYTHING. It was easily the Game of the Year thus far in the NFL. Later, Jason closes the pod with a quick rant on the social media trolls who came after LiAngelo Ball after the middle Ball Brother was cut by the Detroit Pistons before ever stepping foot on the court. While the hater took glee in seeing Ball's dreams crushed, Jason argues that he should commend for having the bravery to chase his dreams. Saints Caught Slippin', Rodgers is Rolling Towards and MVP & Playing the Blame Game with Big Ben
On today's episode, Jason opens things up with a very simple question: Are the New Orleans Saints the team we thought they were? The Saints had been the hottest team in the League until rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts lit them up in his first career start. Chalk it up to a lack of familiarity with the opponent - or just a rare bad game from their defense - but either way the loss knocked them out of the top seed in the NFC. Which brings us to the Green Bay Packers. With their win on Sunday, the road to the Super Bowl in the NFC suddenly go through Lambeau Field. It's fitting that in a year where three other teams had been pegged as the team to beat in the conference (Saints, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and two other quarterbacks were tabbed as MVP front-runners (Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson) that Aaron Rodgers and the Packers now have the inside track in both races. Producer Rob joins the show to share his thoughts on the Las Vegas Raiders' decision to finally cut ties with their defensive coordinator, and Jason tells us why he has a big problem with Ben Roethlisberger blaming the Pittsburgh Steelers struggling offense on the lack of a running game. Big Ben was the reason the Steelers lost on Sunday Night to the Buffalo Bills and his physical limitations is one reason why they can't be more creative offensively. Later, Jason and Rob tell us why Florida Gators head coach Dan Mullen has a point when he says that his team would likely still be in the mix for the College Football Playoff if they hadn't played so many games this season. Mullen is probably the last guy you want making this kind of statement but he's got it right on this one. Finally, Jason closes things out with the Monday Night Football edition of the Best Bet. Why the Rams are Like the Chiefs & Former NFL Executive of the Year Randy Mueller
Jason opens things up with a quick reaction to the Los Angeles Rams suffocating victory over the New England Patriots. The Patriots appear set to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2008, but more importantly, the Rams look like arguably the most complete team in the NFC. In fact, you can see shades of the Kansas City Chiefs with how varied and explosive their offense is. Later, former NFL Executive of the Year and The Athletic podcast host Randy Mueller swings by to explain why he's not surprised by the Miami Dolphins' quick turnaround from last year to this year, why the authenticity of Brian Flores and Joe Judge is the biggest reason why they've been able to buck the trend of failed Bill Belichick disciples, why it's so important for the front office and the head coach to be aligned on the type of team they're trying to build - which is the biggest reason why the Cleveland Browns are thriving and the Dallas Cowboys are floundering, how Nick Saban was able to bring the best out of him as an executive when the two were together with the Dolphins, why's pessimistic that Jim Harbaugh will be back in the NFL next season but optimistic about the return of Marvin Lewis, why he's been a little surprised to see Andy Reid disciples Matt Nagy and Doug Pederson struggle so much the past seasons, why John Elway's decision not to draft Josh Allen was so shocking to him, and much more! Ravens Run Over the Cowboys, Landing Spots for Harden & FS1 NFL analyst TJ Houshmandzadeh
Jason opens things up by sharing a quick thought on the Baltimore Ravens victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday Night Football. It’s hard to really take much away from the game given that the Cowboys are so bad that the Ravens hardly ever had to step out of their comfort zone to win. In fact, the most interesting thing to come out of the game actually took place off the field as Dez Bryant had to be pulled during warmups after testing positive for COVID-19. Given the way the season has played out thus far, how the hell could the NFL’s protocols allow something like this to happen? It makes no sense. Later. Producer Rob joins the show to help make sense of the latest report that James Harden has expanded his list of preferred trade destinations. Are the Philadelphia 76ers the new front-runners? Should the Golden State Warriors throw their hat into the mix? And is the Brooklyn Nets offer really that bad? Plus, former NFL Pro Bowler, FS1 NFL analyst and FOX Sports Radio host TJ Houshmandzadeh discusses how he was able escape a childhood filled with drug abuse and violence to eventually become an NFL wide receiver, why a series of poor decisions in high school is the reason why he had to make a pitstop in junior college before moving up to Division 1, how a group of JUCO kids helped create the greatest team in Oregon State football history, why he thinks the Indianapolis Colts are the ideal landing spot for Carson Wentz if the Philadelphia Eagles decide to move on, why he takes such great price in seeing Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wide receiver Chase Claypool blow up in the NFL, how he's managed to make the transition from the football field to the sports media world, and much more! The Browns are Back, Wentz Hits the Bench & Concerned about Kyler?
On today's episode, Jason shares his thoughts on when he believes to be the biggest headlines to come out of Sunday's NFL action. First, it's time to admit that Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns are for real. Did you see the way they demolished the Tennessee Titans? More importantly, did you see the way they demolished the Titans without Odell Beckham Jr? In the crazy year that is 2002, it's fitting that we'd see the Browns back in the playoffs. Second, the Philadelphia Eagles finally pulled the plug on Carson Wentz. It’s too early to say if Jalen Hurts has officially become the Eagles quarterback of the future, but it’s not too early to say that it’s definitely not Wentz. Third, what the heck happened to Kyler Murray? Less than a month ago he was the Toast of the Town and considered to be an MVP candidate, and now he’s a loser of 3 straight who can’t beat the blitz if his life depended on it. The NFL has clearly adjusted to Kyler, and he better find a way to adjust back or the Arizona Cardinals could miss the playoff yet again. Finally, let’s pour one out for all the downtrodden New York Jets fans out there. No, they did not try to lose to the Las Vegas Raiders on purpose like some talking heads would like us to believe; it was just a terrible play call at the worst possible time. James Harden Has to Go & NFL Week 13 wagering with DraftKings' Johnny Avello
On today's episode, Jason opens things up with a quick thought on the latest in the James Harden Saga in Houston. Suddenly, the plan is to give him 'space' to help him cool down following a tumultuous offseason? Seriously? Just get it over with! The longer the Rockets wait to trade Harden, the worse the offers will get. Plus, DraftKings director of sportsbook operations Johnny Avello swings by to explain why he decided to leave his post as the Wynn in Las Vegas and take his talents to DraftKings, discuss what the future of gambling looks like now that it's become more mainstream and is slowly becoming legalized across the country, the process behind setting the gambling lines, and discuss all of the NFL Week 13 games from a wagering perspective. The Sluggish Steelers, Westbrook to the Wizards & an interview with former Pro Bowl RB Clinton Portis
On today's episode, Jason explains why the knee injury to Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree is a much bigger deal than you might think on the surface, why he's shocked at how much Baltimore Ravens quarterback Robert Griffin III has regressed as a passer since his rookie season in Washington, and why he's a tad concerned about the Steelers' sputtering offense. Jason also shares his thoughts on the Russell Westbrook-for-John Wall blockbuster trade in the NBA and tells us why he can't envision the deal working out well for either the Houston Rockets or the Washington Wizards. Later, former Pro Bowl running back and FOX Sports' Talk the Line co-host Clinton Portis swings by to explain why he feels the 2005 Washington Redskins were the closest team he's ever been a part of and why he was so disappointed to see them broken up the following season, how the unfortunate passing of his teammate Shawn Taylor helped cement his bond with Washington owner Daniel Snyder and why he thinks Snyder takes a lot of unwarranted criticism from fans and the media, why the daily competition on the legendary 2001 Miami Hurricanes is what made the team so special, why he emphatically disagrees with the notion that running backs aren't as valuable in today's NFL, why he begrudgingly calls former former Florida State and current Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook the best in the NFL right now, and much more! A Conversation with Comedian Nimesh Patel
On today's episode, Jason opens things up in reverse by dropping a quick Best Bet for this afternoon's Baltimore Ravens-Pittsburgh Steelers showdown. Let's just hope he can get back to his winning ways. Later, Jason welcomes comedian and television writer Nimesh Patel to show for a long-from conversation on a myriad of topics, including: his only regret about doing an interview with Joe Rogan following his infamous Columbia University 'incident', how the Kobe Bryant Mamba Mentality helped him to improve as a comic during the pandemic, why he's made the conscious decision not to talk about his family much during his stand-up routine, how he went from a pre-med undergrad to an 'undrafted' comedian after college, how a 'flu game'-type performance on stage is what ultimately led to him writing for Chris Rock, why it took the Detroit Pistons upsetting the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004 to rekindle his love for basketball, why he has such a deep appreciation for everything Kobe stood for, why he thinks LeBron James is a more complete player but he'd pick Kobe to beat him one-on-one, what it was like meeting Charles Barkley backstage on the set of Saturday Night Live, and much more! The Legion of Boom is Back, Wentz Isn't the Only Problem in Philly & COVID is Killing the NFL
On today's episode, Jason opens things up by sharing his thoughts on the Seattle Seahawks impressive road win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. In a shocking turn of events, the Seahawks didn't need Russell Wilson to bail them out this time. Seattle's defense has gone from a laughingstock to a juggernaut over the last 3 weeks. If they can keep this up, don't be surprised to see the Seahawks soar into the Super Bowl at the end of the season. On the flip side, Carson Wentz and the Eagles continue to suffer through a miserable season. Wentz has clearly regressed as a passer, but he's not the only problem in Philadelphia. Head coach Doug Pederson as fallen off as a play caller and the Eagles front office has made a series of Draft Day blunders the past few seasons. Wentz will get the brunt of the criticism - and deservedly so - but the folks around him shouldn't escape criticism. Later, Jason tells us why the ongoing saga surrounding the third postponement of the Baltimore Ravens-Pittsburgh Steelers game has him legitimately concerned about the rest of the NFL season. If the League Offices can't come up with some sort of plan, and if the players can't follow simple protocols, then we could see this sort of thing pop up again. Finally, Jason explains why the untimely injury to New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones could mean that Alex Smith and the Washington Football Team are now the team to beat in the NFC East. Can you believe it? What's more, they're in line to host a playoff game! 2020 is wild, man. Tension is Building Between Arians and Brady, Mahomes is Worth More Than $500 Million & Time for an NFL Bubble
On today’s episode, Jason shares his thoughts on the latest report that there is growing ‘tension’ between Bruce Arians and Tom Brady in Tampa Bay – and that was before the Buccaneers got blasted by the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. We had to say we told you so but… we told you so! Arians and Brady have been in an ongoing power struggle from the day Tom arrived in Tampa. The Bucs are still almost a lock to make the playoffs, but don’t be surprised if all that tension ends up with them going one-and-done in the postseason. Speaking of the Chiefs, did you see what Patrick Mahomes did to that vaunted Bucs secondary? At this rate, that $500 million contract is going to look like a bargain in a few short years because Mahomes has GOAT potential. Moreover, it’s becoming clear that the NFL needs to do something drastic if they have any hope of getting through the season. The Baltimore Ravens-Pittsburgh Steelers game had to be postponed twice due to a COVID outbreak, and the Denver Broncos had to be play on Sunday without a single quarterback on their roster due to contact tracing. It just might be time for the NFL to move to a bubble for the last four weeks of the season. Later, Producer Rob joins the show to help discuss which NFL head coaching vacancies are the most appealing now that the Detroit Lions gig has officially become available, and if the struggles of Andy Reid-disciples Matt Nagy and Doug Pederson could end up hurting Eric Bieniemy this offseason. Finally, Jason closes things out with the Monday Night Football edition of the Best Bet. Post-Thanksgiving NFL Takeaways, Kyler Murray Has A Brighter Future Than Lamar Jackson!
On today's episode, delivers his post-Thanksgiving thoughts on the NFL. Turkey Day had a poor slate of games but it wasn’t without its takeaways. Jason explains why he is officially out on the Detroit Lions and applauds Deshaun Watson for his resurgence amid a down season for the Houston Texans. Things are looking up for the Washington Football Team and Jason believes they have found a star in rookie running back Antonio Gibson. Meanwhile, the Cowboys continue to find new lows and they did so again on Thursday afternoon. The Baltimore Ravens rematch with the Pittsburgh Steelers was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak and Jason isn’t certain that it will get played this week. How to Bet the Thanksgiving Day NFL Slate
On today's episode, Jason is bringing you a very brief preview of all the upcoming Thanksgiving Day NFL games, and in true Straight Fire fashion he's previewing each game from the gambling perspective. While Joe Public is likely going to bet heavy on the Houston Texans against the Detroit Lions, Jason says the smart play is Detroit. Matthew Stafford always plays better at home and the Lions should get their star running D'Andre Swift back in the lineup. Expect Detroit to cover the 3 points against the banged-up Texans squad. In the afternoon NFC East clash between the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Football Team, Jason says he has a hard time believing that Washington will be able to keep up with the Cowboys offensively. Smart money says to bet on the home favorite Cowboys. In the nightcap, Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens are dealing with a COVID outbreak and will put their depleted roster up against the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. The Ravens are struggling, but they aren't dead. Take Baltimore plus the points against Pittsburgh. Tom Brady is Washed, the Rams are Super Bowl Contenders & NBA Post-Free Agency Power Rankings
On today’s episode, Jason opens things up by dropping a few verbal haymakers on Tom Brady. Tom was anything but terrific in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football. His arm looked shot as he continued to misfire on anything beyond 15 yards, and he turned the ball over 2 more times. Don’t let the season-long stats fool you; Tom Brady is washed. He can get by most teams because he’s so smart and the weapons around him are so talented but put him against a top defense like the Rams and he looks mediocre at best. Speaking of the Rams ,don’t look now but they could be a dark horse Super Bowl contender coming out of the NFC. If Drew Brees returns at anything less than 100% then the Rams just might be the most complete team in that conference. Later, Producer Rob joins the show to help Jason unveil the top 8 teams in each conference now that NBA Free Agency is winding down. Everyone can agree that the Los Angeles Lakers are the prohibitive favorites to come out of the West, but can we expect the Denver Nuggets to make another deep playoff run? And in the Eastern Conference, will the loss of Gordon Hayward turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics? The answers may surprise you! Mahomes the Magician, How Aaron Rodgers is Like LeBron & It's Timeout for Tua
On today's episode, Jason interrupts his much-needed vacation to share his thoughts on the 5 biggest headlines to come out of Sunday's Week 11 NFL action. First, he explains why Patrick Mahomes' latest heroic victory - this time against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday Night Football - is just another reason why he may go down in history as the Greatest Quarterback of All-Time. You need him to throw an 80-yard bomb? No problem. You want him to check it down all the way to the endzone? He can do that, too. No matter what the situation is, you can count on Mahomes to get it done. The second biggest story of the day took place in Miami where Dolphins head coach Brian Flores inexplicably benched rookie quarterback Tagovailoa late in their loss to the Denver Broncos. Tua was having a rough game, and that's putting it mildly, but part of developing a young quarterback is letting him learn from experiences like that. Flores may have done irreparable harm to his franchise player. Next, Jason explains why Aaron Rodgers could go down in history as the LeBron James of the NFL. On one hand, they're both arguably the greatest to ever do it in the sports that they play; on the other, they're likely both going to end their careers with less rings than you'd expect a player of that caliber to have. For whatever reason, Rodgers can't seem to get it done in overtime games. Unless he can find a way to get that ship righted he's never going to win another Super Bowl. The fourth biggest story of the day has to be the deterioration of Carson Wentz. At one point, Wentz was an MVP front-runner destined to take over the League. Now? He’s arguably the worst starting quarterback in all of football. It might be too soon to turn the keys over to Jalen Hurts given Wentz’ contract situation, but the idea definitely needs to be on the table moving forward. Later, Jason tells us why Taysom Hill should be thanking the New Orleans Saints for helping him get the win in his first NFL start against the Atlanta Falcons. That’s not to say that Hill played poorly – he played pretty well actually – but the Saints defense has been lights out for three straight weeks now. If they can keep it up, they should be the favorites to win the NFC. Finally, Jason closes things out with the Monday Night Football edition of the Best Bet. Let’s just hope it does better than his Sunday picks. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Seahawks Soar Atop the NFC, a $100 Listener Giveaway & Steph Curry's Legacy Defining Season
On today’s episode, Jason tells us why the Seattle Seahawks impressive win over the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday Night Football should propel them to the best record in the NFC at the end of the season. What’s more, it was clear late in that game that Kyler Murray still has a lot to learn about playing the quarterback position. His time will come – and come quickly – but right now he’s not quite on the same level as Russell Wilson. Later, Producer Rob joins the show to unveil the 3 winners for this month’s $100 giveaway. We’re not exactly sure if our listeners really enjoy the podcast as much as they say, but it makes us feel good, nonetheless. Jason and Rob also share their thoughts on the latest news to come out of Golden State following the season-ending injury to Klay Thompson. What would constitute a successful season for the Warriors? Will this be a legacy-defining year for Steph Curry? Klay Thompson and the End of the Splash Bros Era, a New James Harden Trade Idea & NBA Draft Reaction
On today’s episode, Jason starts off by addressing his report that the New York Giants fired their offensive line coach after he got into a fist fight with head coach Joe Judge. Local media were quick to shoot the story down, which isn’t all that surprising if you know the inner workings of sports media, but our fearless leader is standing by what he said. Jason also shares his thoughts on the unfortunate injury suffered by Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson. All signs point to it being an Achilles tear, which would not only end his Thompson’s season but also any hope the Warriors had of winning an NBA championship. However, Producer Rob joins the show to explain why he thinks Klay’s injury should give Golden State the kick in the butt they needed to get involved in the James Harden Sweepstakes. Steph Curry isn’t getting any younger, and a trade for Harden would be enough to keep the Warriors in the championship mix for at least two more seasons. Plus, the guys do a deep dive on the NBA Draft and tell us which teams performed well (Philadelphia 76ers) and which teams didn’t (Minnesota Timberwolves and New Orleans Pelicans). On today's episode, Jason opens things up with a quick preview of tonight's NBA Draft and tells us why he's placing a small wager on James Wiseman to go first overall to the Minnesota Timberwolves and why he's a little miffed about Anthony Edwards' peculiar comments on the eve of the Draft. Later, Jason lists a few Week 11 games in the NFL that he's looking to lay some money down on. None of these games are ones he's willing to bet the farm on, but he'd definitely be willing to drop some 'pizza money' and see what happens. Finally, Jason drops his final word on the series of trades that the Milwaukee Bucks made in hopes of getting Giannis Antetokounmpo to sign the supermax extension. Haven't the Bucks learned anything from the 4 previous players to sign it? Three of them will likely have been traded at least once in short order (Russell Westbrook, John Wall and James Harden). Getting Giannis to sign will feel all warm and fuzzy in the short term but if the Bucks continue to flame out in the playoffs don't be surprised if he decides to bolt for a Super Team a few years from now. Plus, Las Vegas Raiders radio play-by-play voice and VSiN host Brent Musburger swings by for an extended conversation to explain why he absolutely believes the Raiders are a playoff-caliber team this season, why he's not surprised that first round pick Henry Ruggs has had a slow start to his rookie season thus far, why this Sunday Night's game between the Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs is the ultimate 'Pros vs Joes' game for gamblers, why he has a personal bone to pick with the Indianapolis Colts this season, why the lack of crowds is arguably the biggest reason why scoring is at an all-time high this season in the NFL, why he's not expecting the Pittsburgh Steelers to cover the spread this Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which two things he would change about sports television broadcasting today, and much more! Bucks are Dealing But Giannis is No Closer to a Ring, James Harden vs the Houston Rockets & NBA Draft preview with ESPN's Fran Fraschilla
On today's episode, Jason does a deep dive on all the wheeling and dealing that went on Monday in the NBA. The biggest news by far was the Milwaukee Bucks working deep into the night to acquire guards Jrue Holiday and Bogdan Bogdanovic. Did the Bucks give up a ton of roster depth and a billion first round picks to make the deals happen? Yes. Will the moves inspire superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo to sign a super-max contract extension in Milwaukee? Probably. Do either of those things make the Bucks more likely to win a title in the suddenly crowded East? Nope. In the end, it all may end up being much ado about nothing. The sneakiest move - and likely most impactful - was made by the Portland Trailblazer. They were able to acquire Robert Covington from the Houston Rockets, giving them the big wing defender they desperately needed. Don't be surprised to see the Blazers back in the top-4 of the Western Conference. But, perhaps the biggest move of the offseason is the one that is still yet to be made: James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets. Rumor has it Harden is trying to force his way to Brooklyn, but should Houston give in to his demands? Producer Rob joins the show to discuss the issue, and explain why he thinks the Rockets may send The Beard somewhere else just out of spite. Plus, ESPN college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla swings by to explain why he's calls the 2020 NBA Draft a 'smoke and mirrors draft' that's being overanalyzed by members of the media, why University of Washington big man Isaiah Stewart would be a perfect fit with the Miami Heat, why James Wiseman reminds him of a young David Robinson and why he's really hoping that big man lands with the Golden State Warriors, why concerns about Anthony Edwards' defense are a tad overblown considering most rookies can't play NBA-level defense anyways, why he believes LaMelo Ball could slide all the way down to the New York Knicks with the #8 overall pick, why he believes Duke swingman Cassius Stanley could wind up being the steal of the draft, and much more!
