On today's episode, Jason brings you wall-to-wall reaction to the Dak Prescott mega-deal with the Dallas Cowboys. First off, congratulations to Dak for thoroughly destroying Jerry Jones at the negotiating table; Dak got the largest signing bonus in NFL history, the 4-year deal as opposed to 5, a no-trade clause and a no-tag clause. If there's a worse negotiator in the NFL than Jerry Jones please point him out to us. Because Jerry conceded so much to Dak, he essentially limited the Dallas Cowboys' Super Bowl window to one year. After the 2021 season Dallas is going to be in such salary cap hell they'll be lucky to field even a mediocre team for the life of Dak's contract. All of this leads to one obvious question: What exactly is the best way to build an NFL team? If you pay the quarterback too early a la Jared Goff and Carson Wentz then you risk having to eat the dead cap money just to get that guy off your roster. If you wait to pay the quarterback a la Dak Prescott then you run the risk of having to pay a mediocre quarterback elite quarterback money? Perhaps the best plan of attack is to have your signal caller take a contract below market value like Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes did... even if that screws up the negotiating power for the quarterbacks to follow. It could be that there is no 'correct' way to pay a franchise quarterback. Either way, all signs point to this Dak deal blowing up in the Cowboys' face soon enough. But hey, at least it will help guys like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Baker Mayfield secure the bag, too.
