February 14, 2024 - Season 14, Episode 90 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday show, which was recorded Tuesday night, Alex Kozora and I get right to recapping and talking about the transactions that the Pittsburgh Steelers made on Monday. Those moves included the Steelers parting ways with QB Mitch Trubisky, OT Chukwuma Okorafor, and P Pressley Harvin III. We discuss the surprising timing of those three moves with them coming just one day after Super Bowl LVIII was played. Alex and I go over the salary cap savings produced by those three moves and then move on to talk about what those transactions might mean for DT Larry Ogunjobi, C Mason Cole, and CB Patrick Peterson. Will all three now survive their respective March roster bonus dates? We go deep into attempting to answer that question. With those three Monday moves now in the books, I provide a 2024 salary cap update related to the Steelers current Rule of 51. Alex and I then discuss ways the Steelers are likely to get cap compliant by the start of the new league year and how much space they might look to have entering free agency. Will the Steelers be very active in free agency this year? What is the most they are likely to spend on an unrestricted free agent from an APY standpoint? We attempt to answer those questions in this show as well. The Steelers waiver claim of LB Jeremiah Moon finally processed on Monday, so Alex and I discuss his unique situation and the shrewdness of the move. We also discuss the Monday news concerning the Steelers extending the contract of running backs coach Eddie Faulkner. Adam Schefter of ESPN talked about the Steelers and potential interest in Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields on Monday, and the internet has since gone wild as a result of him doing so. With Fields being a heavy social media topic again on Tuesday, Alex and I jump into another discussion concerning the possibility, feasibility, and plausibility of the Steelers potential trading for the Bears quarterback. We cover several aspects that need considering when it comes to trading for Fields. Several other minor topics not noted are also discussed in this 92-minute episode and we end it by answering several questions that we received from listeners of the show. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. February 12, 2024 - Season 14, Episode 89 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Monday show, Alex Kozora and I get right to recapping Super Bowl LVIII that took place on Sunday in Las Vegas, Nevada and resulted in the Kansas City Chiefs being crowned World Champions again after beating the San Francisco 49ers. We discuss several aspects of that game and main takeaways from it with offseason now officially being underway. How important is the quarterback position in the NFL and especially when it comes to Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and the talent that he was surrounded by in 2023? We relate that topic to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the outlook for them at the quarterback position heading into the offseason. On Sunday morning there was a national media report concerning veteran quarterbacks Mason Rudolph and Ryan Tannehill. We break down those specu-reports and talk a little bit about contractual value when it comes to each player. Last week, Steelers team president Art Rooney II made some additional comments about the team potentially trading for a quarterback this offseason that Alex and I failed to recap during the Friday episode, so we make sure to rewind and do that in the Monday show. We also discuss what former Steelers DC Dick LeBeau told our own Scott Brown about Arthur Smith, the team's new offensive coordinator. Alex has now looked deeper into new Steelers QB coach Tom Arth since his hiring last week, so we go over what he now knows about him. We discuss what Arth brings to the Steelers quarterback room moving forward. Will the Steelers win another Super Bowl in the next 15 years? We briefly hit that topic during this show. The Terrible Podcast — Talking Kozora Steelers Mock Draft, Aaron Freeman On Arthur Smith, Le'Veon Bell Comeback, & More
February 5, 2024 - Season 14, Episode 86 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Monday show, Alex Kozora and I get right to talking about former Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell saying a few days ago on Snapchat that he plans to attempt a comeback this offseason. We talk about his chances of returning to the Steelers and more. Alex released his first full Steelers' mock draft of 2024 on Monday morning so as you would expect, we go over it pick-by-pick and discuss his choices and why he made them. We go into detail on several of the players that Alex mocked to the Steelers and more. This obviously makes for a long segment due to the number of picks we must review and discuss. In the middle of this show, Alex and I are once again joined by Aaron Freeman, who covers the Atlanta Falcons on the Locked on Falcons podcast. If you remember, we had Aaron on a few years ago ahead of the Steelers playing the Falcons in Atlanta during the 2022 regular season. In this interview, Alex and I get an overview of what Aaron knows about new Steelers OC Arthur Smith after his three years spent with the Falcons as their head coach. In total, we spend roughly 35 minutes talking to Aaron about Smith. If not already doing so, please follow Aaron on Twitter at @lockedonfalcons and thank him for appearing on the Friday show. You can also read some of Aaron’s work online here: https://www.sbnation.com/users/AaronFreeman#activity and listed to his podcast here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-falcons-daily-podcast-on-the-atlanta-falcons/id1147245791 Missi Matthews conducted a one-on-one interview with Smith over the weekend, so Alex and I make sure to recap that short session during this Monday episode as well. After having Aaron on, Alex and I discuss how third wide receivers have been utilized in Smith's offense the last five seasons. That discussion is a result of a post I wrote thar includes data pulled from 2019-2023. The main takeaway from that discussion revolves around the Steelers being unlikely to add a notable unrestricted free agent wide receiver this coming offseason. We do, however, discuss the possibility of the Steelers adding a wide receiver at some point during the 2024 NFL Draft. How possible is it that the Steelers lands Chicago Bears CB Jaylon Johnson during the offseason? Alex and I discuss that question and topic later in this show on the heels of comments made by Johnson over the weekend while participating in the annual Pro Bowl games festivities. Several other minor topics not noted are also discussed in this 120-minute episode and we also make sure to read and answer a listener email to close this show out. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. In this Friday show, Alex Kozora and I get right to some coaching staff changes around the NFL that have taken place with the emphasis of that being on AFC North teams and teams on the 2024 schedule. With Arthur Smith now poised to officially be named the Steelers new offensive coordinator, Alex and I go over some key pass and running stats related to his five previous seasons in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons. We talk about the correlation between Smith having a strong running game for his passing game to work and why we believe the Steelers' running game needs to be well within the top 10 in 2024 for the quarterback play to show improvement. While the outside zone running scheme is not new to Pittsburgh, the team's use of it in 2023 was pretty much boom or bust. Alex and I go over some outside zone stats from 2023 related to the Steelers. Will center be a primary focus for the Steelers early in the 2024 NFL Draft? Alex and I discuss that position and briefly touch on the perceived top three center prospects in this year's draft class. We talk about why Smith was likely hired to be the new offensive coordinator, his backstory and influences, his stint as the offensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans and his past three seasons as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. What kind of scheme and offense will Smith attempt to utilize in Pittsburgh? Alex and I go over what all he's done in the past and what carryover of that we expect to see with the Steelers. We spend a lot of time going over his love of the outside/wide zone and other run concepts he uses. We also go over several stats when it comes to personnel used, play action usage and shotgun rates. We also discuss the possibility of Smith ultimately being the Steelers' choice and whether we think more interviews might take place with the likes of Klint Kubiak of the San Francisco 49ers.
