Matt and Steve are bringing you this week's news and updates in Pittsburgh sports. From NCAA hoops coverage to major league content for NFL, NHL, and MLB, if it's happening in (or in some cases affecting) Pittsburgh, this is where you'll find out about it. If you're a fan of soccer or golf, Matt and Steve have some highlights there as well. This week's show notes: Penguins- Pens trade for Erik Gudbranson who is considered one of the worst D Men by the numbers he is listed as mor Physical than effective. He is signed through 2021. The Pen also picked up D Man Chris Wideman from the Panthers to try to sure up the Blue line . Derick Brassard who Pens traded to Panthers is now with the Avalanche. Former Pen, Haglin who was traded to the kings earlier this season is now with the Caps. Biggest one in my eyes is Mats Zuccarello to the Stars. In the last few games, the Pens have had some bad outings, getting shelled by the sharks 4-0 and a total give away game in the Stadium Series Out door game in Philly last Saturday losing in OT 4-3. Murray is letting in weak goals, the Defense isn’t clearing pucks, lots of giveaways in the natural zone, the offense isn’t keeping the zone and putting puck on net. Ice conditions last Saturday were shit, we lost Doumalin and Letang on same play in first, lots of weird bounces. Blue Jackets tonight. 20 games left in season and the Pens are on the outside looking in. Riverhounds- came to a 1-1 tie with Pitt last Friday and 1-0 win over Bethlehem Steel last Sunday. This Friday March 1st the Akron Zips come to Highmark @3pm and Sunday the 3rd Lansing Ignite FC at 1PM, March 9th Toronto FC @2pm for last preseason game. all Preseason Matches are Free to attend. The Regular Season starts on the road with the Tampa Bay Rowdies March 16th and the first 4 games of the season are on the road. First home game is April 20th. PGA Tour- Dustin Johnson with a commanding win at the WGC Mexico Open with a -21. Rory was 2nd with -16. Was a really chilling course, very tight and narrow with trees lining the fairways and in just damn tough places. Club selection was key here and Lots of conservative play. Tiger the most. Who finished 10th. Next week is the Honda Classic to start the Florida Swing. Lots of the big names are taking this week off after the Calli swing and Mexico. We aren’t far out from the Masters folks that has been pushed back to the second weekend in April. NCAA Hoops- Zion Williamson had some Shoe issues and is listed Day To Day for Duke which fell to Number 3 with the loss to UNC last week and a struggle with the Orangemen Saturday. You top 5, Gonzaga, Virginia, Duke, Kentucky, and UNC. Michigan St beat Michigan last Saturday in a huge big 10 matchup. Pitt- Still Struggling in the ACC with a loss to GT last week. Clemson Comes in this Wednesday and their Panthers head to Virginia Saturday. WVU- also having a down year with a recent Loss top Baylor and they have TCU headed into Morgantown tonight. Robert Morris- had two good wins over LIU Brooklyn and StFrancis and the colonials head to Sacred heart Thursday. 2nd in the Northeast. Duquesne- put together 2 good wins over GW and George Mason. They have the Bonnies away tomorrow. 5th in A10 Pirates- Putting together a decent spring, with a 3-1 record in the Grapefruit Kang having a few homers the other afternoon. The Pitching staff is the talk of the team. It’s early, we will see how it shakes out. MLB News-Rockies 3rd Baseman Nolan Arenado finalizing 8yr extension for 255 million making him highest paid Annual Salary for position player.. Bryce Harper still out there but reports of him headed to Philly. Cutch probably most honest player in MLB, 3 yr 50 million is why he signed in Philly. , Josh Harrison Signed in Detroit for 1 year 2 million with 1 mill more in incentives. Steelers- AB saga continues and Lev Bell has several teams after him though the Steelers can still tag him in a few ways. Indy Combine is underway this week. Anything else? This week end, the Hounds have Pitt @ Ambrose Field @7pm Friday Night and Bethlehem Steel Sunday @2 PM. The Hounds have yet to allow a goal, last season they had the lowest GAA average in the USL. Steelers- AB and Art Rooney II met finally in Miami, Joined by Kevin Colbert and Omar Kahn, and Agent Drew Rosenhaus , Rosenhaus was told by the Steelers that He Nor Brown was not allowed to work out any deal, it was being run by the Steelers, He is Under Contract for 3 more seasons, He has NO More Guaranteed Money left on his contract. AB is looking for more UP Front Money.. his only leverage is hold out. But the Steelers hold all the cards in this trade. So Mr. Big Chest is getting his wish PGA Tour- J.B. The Pens find themselves in 4th in the division and 8th in the Conference. Pirates- Pitchers and Catchers reported, Melky Cabrera signed a Minor league deal with over 2 mill in incentives, Cervelli Trade talks and he just shuts it out and plays, Liriano is looking to make the big club, and willing to accept any role, last 2 seasons was used as a reliever. Garth Brooks in Camp- 20th anniversary of Teammates for kids Foundation. The Foundation gives kids around the world a even start in life. Works with several sports athletes but it all started with baseball and Jason Kendal when he was with the Padres. Garth was a Clemente fan as a kid which made him a pirates fan, he realized the Clemente died trying to help kids and people in his a homie country, he vowed to at some point in his life to help kids through baseball. All-Star women hockey on display, Canada’s Rebecca Johnston, Renata Fast, and U.S. Kendall Coyn Scholfield and Brianna Decker put on shows at Skills Competition. Kendal killed it at the fastest skater and took second to Connor McDavid, Decker, at the Passing competition, Johnston, in Puck COntrol took second, Kendall Coyn Scholfield earned a analyst position with NBC for the Wednesday Night Hockey with the lightning coming to Pittsburgh. Last nights game, just bad, Malkin gave away pucks in the nuteral zone, Brassard got his pocket picked several times, Murray let in one really weak goal, and a few questionable ones. PP wasn’t hot, PK let in a shorty, it was just a bad game against a bad team. Pens traded Oleksaik back to Dallas for a 4th round pick early in the afternoon. Pro-Bowl- The Joke That it normally is, was played again Sunday Afternoon in Orlando Fl. The First thing is, JuJu left with a Knee Contusion. Said to be fine, but one catch for 16 yards. Conner 6 Carries, 11 yards ground, 3 receptions for 34. WR were playin DB, DB’s playing WR, WR playing QB. RB’s all over. Just be done with it except for the skills completion. PGA Tour- Justin Rose wins the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines last weekend with a -21 total. Tiger finished 20th -10 for his first tournament of the season. This week the PGA heads to the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course for the Phoenix open. It gonna be loud. MLB- Neil Walker to the Marlins, Jordy Mercer Signed with Tigers, Other free agents. Pitt Basket Ball has been Getting shelled in the ACC Play. Tonight at Clemson, its been a 20 point game pretty much all game. WVU- Bad Season for the Mountianeers with 2 bad losses in a row, and now to take on Iowa St 20. Duquesne- a bad loss to VCU, but other than that, standing strong in the A-10.
