Matt and Steve are bringing you this week's news and updates in Pittsburgh sports. From NCAA hoops coverage to major league content for NFL, NHL, and MLB, if it's happening in (or in some cases affecting) Pittsburgh, this is where you'll find out about it. If you're a fan of soccer or golf, Matt and Steve have some highlights there as well. This week's show notes: John Banaszak, Chris Hoke Ryan Reaves-Pens, Steve Hutchinson O Guard Seahawks/Vikings Riverhounds- Last week the hounds ended with a 2-2 Draw with Bethlehem Steel (Pull stats) this Saturday the Hounds take on Louisville City in Louisville who are 6th in the group currently. Next Saturday the hounds have their home opener with Hartford Athletic. PGA Tour- Last week was the WGC Match Play at Austin CC. Kevin Kisner wins the brackets over Matt Kuchar. Tiger Made it to the Quarterfinals. Other top contenders were Sergio Garcia, Louis Oostuizen, Francesco Molinari. And Kevin Na. Also, Last week the Puntacana Championship was going on last week that Gream McDowell , this week the PGA Topur is at the Valero Texas open in San Antonio. After day one Sae woo Kim is in the lead -6. Not lots of big names this week as the guys get ready for the Masters next week. NCAA- the Final Four is set, 3 Texas Tech and 2 Mi State and 5 Auburn and 1 Virginia take on each other Saturday with the final game to be held Monday in Minneapolis. 2 of the 4 elite 8 games went into overtime and the Duke game was just crazy ending. NCAA Women- the women’s final four is also this weekend, Friday night, Baylor and Oregon, and Notre Dame and UConn. And the winners meet Sunday four the Championship in Tampa. Last season ND won the Championship with the skill and last min shots of Arike Ogunbowale. She and the rest of the Lady Irish are looking to go back to back. NCAA NIT Men’s- Texas wins its second NIT Championship over Lipscomb. Penguins- The Pens Won this evening over the Red Wings to Clinch a spot in the Playoffs. The seeding is still up in the air depending on the last game of the season for the Pens. Lots can happen. ( BreakDown) Kessel on the board tonight twice, with Guentzel and Crosby as well. Malkin and Letang both back in the lineup contribute nicely. Mc Cann has been all over the Ice and making lots of plays. Pirates- the Bucs are 2-3 after a win tonight over the reds. First off, the Bucs blew leads and went into extras with the Cards the previous two games including the home opener. The Defense made errors, the offense struggled with players in scoring position . The Starting pitchers were great, but are on an early season Pitch count. Steelers- the teams released Morgan Burnett, Steelers gave him 14.35 million over three years, after one season, 11 games, early season injury, and being platooned in the secondary or as a inside LB in the dime package, he asked for his release, the Steelers shopped him with no takers, so they just released him freeing up 3.63 mill on the cap, but have a dead money hit due to a roaster bonus. Todd McShay prediction of Greedy Williams LSU Cornerback as our number one draft pick. Holmes and Keisel are to announce 2nd and 3rd round picks at draft. Bens Deal- Ben has been out of town, his agent also represents Goff, Wentz, and Mariota. Those guys are in the 4th and or 5th year of their rookie deal. That may also set the bar for Ben who is in the last year of his 4yr 84 mill contract. Ben is due 23.2 mill against the Cap this season. Projected that Ben gets 2yr around 50 mill, and probably all guaranteed. Fun things this week. Any match created must have at least a chance of happening in this year’s WrestleMania. That means all wrestlers come in their current physical, emotional and contractual state. Anyone selected for a match must have a reasonable chance of being hired by WWE to appear on the real-life WrestleMania card. The game ended in a 2-2 draw. The hounds next match is at the Bethlehem Steel this Saturday at 7 pm. International Soccer -Matt got this. NFL- Gronk Retirement - 29 yrs old, 3 time Super Bowl Champ, 5 time pro bowler, 4 First team All-Pro, 2010-2018 9yr career all with the Pats. Gronk made over 70 million in the NFL and has banked and invested all of his Player Checks. He has lived off of his endorsement deals. He kept it simple. Jordy Nelson- Retirement at age 34 and 10 seasons in the NFL. 1 Super Bowl ring, 1 pro bowl, 1 time Second team all pro, 56 million career earnings . Jordys wife Emily. NFL- Rules Change- for a one year trial, Offense and defensive Pass Interference calls, and Non Calls to be challenged . Under 2 mins the league will review all calls and non calls. This was passed for a 31-1 vote by the owners. Others as well, pull article . Keep an eye on free agency , still lots going on, the Draft is right around the corner starting Thursday the 25th-Saturday -27th. PGA Tour- Last week at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Paul Casey took the win with a -8 for the tournament . Not all the big names played as they were getting ready fro the WGC Match Play event that started today in Austin TX at the Austin CC. Rules change this year in the scoring. Next week is the Valero Texas Open, then its Masters Week. April 11-14. Penguins - there are 5 games left and the Pens actually look like they are clicking headed down the stretch as they find themselves in 2nd position in the Metropolitan Division. Even with the small amount of games left, there pens can still find themselves on the outside looking in with the tight division and conference . NCAA- the Tournament has yet again gone to the sweet 16 and I don’t think there is a perfect bracket there. Its been exciting , and there is a chance still for a Duke/UNC Championship game. MLB- Chris Sale with a 160 mill extension that could pay him well after he retires with the deal structure . The deal is hard to figure out based on where the and who there money is due and his incentives. The Red Sox are the odds on favorite to win the World Series at 6-1, the Pirates are 80-1. MLB Opening day is tomorrow , Thursday the 28th, the Bucs open up on the road in Cincy who had a lot of additions to their squad this season. The Pirates are projected to have one of the better Pitching staffs this season, there Defense loos to be solid, but the offense is where the biggest concern is. The Defense looks solid all around, but the offense is where they will struggle. Riverhounds- this past Saturday was the opening of the USL, the Hounds took a 2-0 loss on the road to open the season in Tampa to the Rowdies, the hounds found themselves dominated in all categories of the game. The hounds play this Saturday at Swope Park Rangers, in Kansas City. Matt- International Soccer PGA- The Players was an amazing tournament. This year they changed the trophy, and the first person to win it was Rory McLlory. With a come from behind win in the last 5 holes. Greensburgh own Jim Furyk was in the clubhouse with the lead when Rory birdied 16 to take the lead. John Rahm was the 54 hole leader and had a meltdown on the back 9 down the stretch. This week the PGH is in Tampa FL at the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Copperhead Course. NCAA- Wrestling In Pittsburgh NCAA- Day one opened up today in the first round of the tournament. Unfortunately work this year I watched at home before heading in. (Check scores) Penguins- the Pens are not helping themselves not finishing games and giving up points. It’s good they got one point in the past two ties, but hurts in long run especially with teams your chasing. The pens have let in some weak goals and the offense hasn’t been clicking. Kessel hasn’t had a full strength goal in 25 games, Malkin is week to week with a upper body. The team looks mediocre. Numbers, top 6, wild card, or miss. Steelers- Mike Hilton Using Restricted Free Agency in his favor, the Steelers have been tossing some money around in Free Agency which is not normal for the team to Cornerback Steven Nelson, WR, Donte Moncrief, and LB/Safety Mark Barron 46mill in total for the 3. From NCAA hoops coverage to major league content for NFL, NHL, and MLB, if it's happening in (or in some cases affecting) Pittsburgh, this is where you'll find out about it. This week's show notes: Penguins- Are Currently 1 point behind the Caines for the 3rd position in the Metropolitan division as well in the last position for the 8th seed in the playoffs. The Pens Picked up 5 points in the last 3 games. With two road wins and a tie. The Pens are back home this week with Florida tonight and the Blue jackets on Thursday. The Pens have 17 total games left in the season and all are important. Crosby gets 3rd star of the week and Jake Guentzel is on fire with a team leading 31 goals. Crosby leads the team with Assists and total points. Riverhounds- The Hounds had a 1-0 win over Akron Zips on Friday and had a 2-0 win over Lansing Ignite Sunday Afternoon. The Hounds Sign Sammy kashai to a one year deal with a club option for next season. Sammy is a Midfielder who spent 3 season with UMBC for his collegiate career 15-17 his senior year he had 5 goals 2 asst and first team American East Conference . Sammy was at the open tryouts held in December, made an impression and grew during camp and the pre season. The CW is partnering with the hounds to air 15 games total. 14 road games and the Home 4th of July game. Ticket packages still available as well as individual games. PGA Tour- Kevin Mitchell wins his first ever of his career at the Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens on the Champion Course. This course is known for the Bear Trap from Holes 15-18 with water on all four holes with 2 par 3, a par 4 and finishing on a par 5. Bruce Kopka and Ricky Fowler made it interesting down the stretch . This week the PGA goes to the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill CC and resort in Orlando. Tiger was slated to Play, but has withdrawn due to Neck Soreness . Fucking AB- with his interview on ESPN and his Appearance on Then Shop with LeBron he is just looking like even a bigger dick and diva and is ruining his career and definitely his trade potential . discussion commence … Ovechkin- crazy ending to the Caps Rangers Game with shootout goal. Jaguars- Expected to sign Nick Foles Zion Williamson return tonight. NCAAPitt-took a big loss to #2 Virginia Saturday . The Panthers have 2 games left In the season, on the road to Miami and home to the Irish . Duquesne- took a bad loss to the Bonnies, and had a good win over UMass. The Dukes have St Louis on the road and Dayton at home to finish up the season Bobby Mo-Bobby Mo took a bad loss to Scared Heart with a rebound win over Wagner. They host the last game of the season with St Francis coming in. WVU- have Iowa St at home and finish on the road at OK St. Next week starts Conference Tournaments with the ACC on Tuesday . Smaller, conferences with more teams start Sunday and Monday. Bryce Harper- 330 million 13 yrs, Good for him and bad for Philly and Scott Boras. Pirates Spring ball- Handing out Minor league deals like candy at a parade. This is in hopes to buy on the cheep with hopes of potential upside. And also trying to resurrect somer career especially with Pitchers like Robbie Ross. Ross 29yr old starting pitcher who was drafted by the Rangers and traded to the Red Sox. He had Back Surgery in 17, the Red Sox released him, the white sox signed him during his rehab and then walked away from him after the 18 season. Ross has upside as a middle reliever . Keone Kela announcement of not talking to Media this season.
