654: JJ Ramberg, MSNBC Host + The Startup Club Author

People sometimes ask how we plan to teach my kids about money and while I think it's important to teach things like delaying gratification, saving, needs versus wants, it's also helpful to raise kids with an entrepreneurial mindset. 649: Kelly Richmond Pope, Education Innovator & Forensic Accounting Expert

We’re going to dig into what actually has people create crime. Not just any crime but financial crime. What is actually behind it... the motivation, the mindset?

Our guest, Kelly Richmond Pope, will help bring this to life. She is the genius behind the movie All the Queen’s Horses. It is a true story of Rita Crundwell, one of the national’s leading quarter horse breeders, who was also arrested in 2012. She was the largest municipal fraud perpetrator in the country’s history. She embezzled upwards of $50 million dollars as a comptroller and treasurer of Dixon, Illinois.

It’s not $50 or $60 billion, like Bernie Madoff. But $50 million is a lot of money. Plus, we’re talking small town Illinois and about a woman who was trusted. She was a horse breeder. There were no signs that she was going to be stealing your money... but were there?

The film has actually won HBO’s best documentary award at the Martha’s Vineyard African-American film festival. Critics are going nuts. They love it.

Kelly is not just a filmmaker. She’s also an associate professor in the school of accountancy at MIS at DePaul University in Chicago. There she teaches a lot of different courses around accounting and a course on leadership. She is also a speaker and an author. She’s worked in the forensic practice at KPMG on anti-money laundering engagements, insurance fraud investigations and fraud risk management projects. She is well-versed in the forensic accounting field. She’s also on a ton of forensic accounting seminars around the world for universities, corporations and governments.

To learn more visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 648: Jack Finio, Fund3 Co-Founder

What is Bitcoin? I’ve been getting more pitches about Bitcoin in the last 30 days than I have in last three years. It's one of those things that made me go, “Hmm, maybe we should do an entry-level, 101 discussion around this on the show?” I thought that it would be great to bring on co-founder of Fund3 Jack Finio for this discussion.

Fund3 it’s a quantitative hedge fund that uses machine learning to make sense of digital assets and cryptocurrency markets. Jack is totally immersed in this market. He’s going to tell us, what is Bitcoin? Why we should care and what is the future? How is Bitcoin going to revolutionize the way we bank today? We could be on the brink of change. He’s going to talk about what he is experiencing in how Fund3 is part of this market.

A little bit more about Jack... he’s a native New Yorker and grew up just steps away from Wall Street. As a result, he was intrigued by finance, investing and entrepreneurship from a very early age. By 17, Jack had won multiple business plan competitions. In college, he studied traditional finance and computer science. He quickly learned that AI and blockchain technology could become extremely disruptive and it was there he saw an opportunity to capitalize on this trend to eventually start Fund3.

To learn more visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 647: Ask Farnoosh, I can't pay off my credit card debt... help!

The podcast makes me rethink my relationship with money, yet I still can't seem to pay off $14,000 worth of credit card debt. Should I just fight for a full refund?

Answering these questions of yours and more on today's Ask Farnoosh. Have a question of your own you'd like to share? 646: Andy Molinsky, Author of "Reach"

Tony Robbins likes to say that, "The quality of your life is in direct proportion to the amount of uncertainty you can comfortably deal with." So, let me ask you: how often do you leave your comfort zone? As tough as that can be, our guest today says it is this very practice that often leads to success. I can vouch for that. Getting laid off in 2009 was a very uncomfortable, uncertain time in my life. But I didn't cower. I didn't play the victim and I credit so much of my success today to that unexpected kick in the pants back in the day.

But, back to our guest, Andy Molinksy, he's a popular professor at Brandeis University who has delivered a tremendous book on this topic called Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge and Build Confidence. In it he helps people conquer the uncomfortable so they can succeed. This is Andy's second book. His first book, Global Dexterity, was a huge success receiving the Axiom Award for best business book in international business and globalization. Organizations around the world have used this book including the US Air Force Academy and the Clinton Foundation.

To learn more visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 645: Sheelah Kolhatkar, "Black Edge" Author

Ever wonder how Wall Street works? I mean, really? We see how Wall Street is portrayed in dramatic movies, like Wolf of Wall Street and The Big Short, and of course the iconic movie Wall Street with Michael Douglas. Personally, I’m obsessed with the show time show Billions. So, how accurate are these portrayals really? Today we go behind the scenes thanks to our guest and her groundbreaking reporting.

Sheelah Kolhatkar is a staff writer for The New Yorker, and has published her first book called Black Edge: Inside Information, Dirty Money, and the Quest to Bring Down the Most Wanted Man on Wall Street. We’re not talking about Bernie Madoff. This book details the story of a billionaire trader Steven A. Cohen, and the rise and fall of his hedge fund SAC Capital. It is the largest inside our trading investigation in history. This is the kicker, Cohen was never charged.

We will dive into all of this with Sheelah, as well as her background as a former hedge fund analyst herself. How did that experience bring her to her role today as an investigative business reporter? As I mentioned, she is currently a staff writer for The New Yorker, where she covers Wall Street and Silicon Valley, the economy and national politics. She also writes the magazine’s financial page and is a regular contributor to NPR’s marketplace.

To learn more visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 644: Ask Farnoosh, Should I stop saving to pay off my student loans or keep saving?

Should I stop saving to pay off my student loans or keep saving?

Are you supposed to pay off debt after you get your paycheck or pay your necessities first and then see what's left over to pay off the debt?

How feasible is it to negotiate or lower any fees associated with a retirement account?

Answering these questions of yours and more on today's Ask Farnoosh with Dan Andrews of Well Rounded Success.

For more information or to share your own question for an upcoming Ask Farnoosh Friday episode visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. BONUS: John Bahnken, President, Citizens Bank Wealth Management

This is a special BONUS episode on the heels of my new partnership with Citizens Bank. I normally don’t publish new episodes on Thursdays, but this one couldn’t wait!

Earlier this fall, Citizens Investment Services introduced a new digital investment advisory platform called SpeciFi, and they’ve invited me to join them on their campaign to educate people about retirement and the importance of investing for the future.

You know I’m all for ways to make investing simple and efficient and we often talk about the value of digital investment platforms on the show…but, call me old–fashioned, I also believe it can be useful to work with real, licensed professionals to help guide our investment planning, and the great news is SpeciFi delivers both of these services in one robust platform.

It’s one of the reasons I’m proud to team up with the folks at Citizens and SpeciFi. The other reason is that I’m a New England girl and Citizens, for those of you who may not know, is one of the oldest and largest financial institutions, headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island, just an hour away from Worcester, MA (my birth town!). Citizens was our neighborhood’s bank growing up, so this is a very cool, full-circle moment for me.

Joining me to discuss more about the ways we can all leverage investing for our goals and how SpeciFi can help investors is John Bahnken, President, Citizens Bank Wealth Management.

To learn more visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 643: Dave Fanger, CEO & Founder of Swell Investing

Question: how do you decide what stocks or funds to buy?

For me, financial health is key. It’s an important marker, but do we care so much about a company’s social mission, really? What’s under the hood? How do they care about their employees? Are they really making an impact in the world? Are they values-driven?

Dave Fanger is dedicated to making what he calls "values-driven" investing more accessible. He's the founder and CEO of Swell Investing. It is an innovative impact investing platform that aims to deliver profit, as well as purpose with six socially responsible investment portfolios. It’s a platform he started while working for his employer who actually helped Dave incubate the idea. This is a great story within a story, right?

We dive into the meaning of values-driven investing and how Swell Investing selects investments, but also how to convince our boss to let you incubate your big idea while working at the company. We always say, “Don’t quit your day job.” This is literally working your day job and coming up with your idea and incubating your idea at the day job. Pretty genius.

For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 642: Claudia Chan, Author of "This Is How We Rise"

Is gender equality really possible? Claudia Chan, our So Money guest today, has made it her life's mission to close the gender equality gap and has inked a new book on the topic. It's called This Is How We Rise: Reach Your Highest Potential, Empower Women, Lead Change in the World.

She's also the founder and CEO of S.H.E. Global Media and she's a recognized expert on leadership and social entrepreneurship. S.H.E. Global Media just wrapped it's annual S.H.E. Summit. It's an event that aims to help Fortune 1000 companies modernize and accelerate diversity with the goal of achieving gender parity by 2030, which is not that far away. That's pretty ambitious. I hope we get there. To support this, I was on a panel at S.H.E. Summit in New York discussing financial equality and how women can earn more. You can probably guess, I had quite a bit to say.

Anyways, Claudia's impetus for launching S.H.E. Global Media actually came after starting a multimillion dollar business. You might have heard of it. It's called Shecky's. It was after achieving tremendous success and still feeling like she wasn't pursuing her life's true calling that she was inspired to do some soul searching. She says step into a new consciousness of what it means to be a woman in today's world. Claudia's book talks about the need to shift to a "me for we" mindset in order to achieve gender equality. “What does that mean?” I ask. And also, How can men be a part of this important revolution?

For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast.
Our guest today has been a close friend and a key member of my support system since my early days of living in New York City. Brian Maloney is here. Brian is more than just a friend. He is a mentor, an entrepreneur, a loving dad, brother and husband.
From covering the police beat in New York City beat to reporting on the best wines across Long Island's vineyards, our guest today is a journalist who, like so many children of immigrants who don't go onto become doctors and lawyers, had a hard time convincing his parents that he was on the right track. 625: Alisyn Camerota, CNN Anchor & Author of "Amanda Wakes Up"

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a top news anchor on CNN, someone who has to report on what’s happening in the world right now LIVE? And, by the way, someone who has been blacklisted by Donald Trump?

Or, maybe you’re an aspiring news reporter curious about the path ahead, how to strike out on your own and stand out from the crowd?

My guest today is Alisyn Camerota is an American television journalist and novelist. She is currently co-anchoring CNN's New Day with Chris Cuomo . She has co-anchored CNN Tonight, and served in many roles during a 16-year career at the Fox News Channel.

Alisyn’ new novel is called Amanda Wakes Up, an entertaining story of the rise, fall and rise of a young reporter working at FAIR News. Alisyn admits there are parallels but the book is fiction.

For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 624: Deepak Chopra, Alternative Medicine Advocate & Author

Our guest today is probably the best guest I could think of to have on a day like this. It is the one and only Dr. Deepak Chopra. He’s the founder of the Chopra Foundation and co-founder of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing. He is a world renowned pioneer in integrative medicine and personal transformation, a prominent figure in the new age movement. He’s written multiple books. Dr. Chopra is also one of the best known and wealthiest figures in alternative medicine.

So, how did I get this interview? My friend Kabir emails me and asks, "Do you want to meet Deepak Chopra in New York City at his book launch?" Of course, I immediately cleared my schedule and emailed him back, "YES!" Sidenote: I can’t remember how many exclamation points. Then, Kabir replied to me and said, “Do you want to interview him for your podcast while you’re here?” At that point, I nearly choked on my bagel.

You might be wondering: who is Kabir? How is he such a super power? Kabir Segal is a friend and friend of the show. He is the bestselling author of Coined: The Rich Life Of Money and How Its History Has Shaped Us. He was on So Money talking about that book as well as his own money journey on episode 73. As it turns out, he's friends with Deepak Chopra.

Most recently, he, Deepak and Paul Avgerinos released a new book called, Home: Where Everyone is Welcome: Poems and Songs Inspired by American Immigrants. It’s a collection of about 34 poems, 12 songs, all inspired by a diverse group of immigrants who’ve made significant contributions to this country. The poems symbolize the many roads that lead to America and which we expect will continue to converge to build the highways to our future. So, that's what has prompted this meeting between myself and Deepak and hundreds of other people who came to this event. It was a magnificent event.

Before it happened, I got the chance to sit down in Deepak’s office, which is at ABC Carpet in New York and it was very surreal. We talked about the way you wear money, the way that you spend it and how it reflects your inner most values. We also talk about the guilt that we sometimes feel around making money and how that can lead to poverty consciousness a

To learn more about Dr. Deepak Chopra visit www.deepakchopra.com or follow him on Twitter @DeepakChopra.

If you'd like to learn more visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast.
How much of my savings should I invest in my index fund? My student loan lender says they won't accept principle only payments... any other ideas on how to knock off the debt quickly? 622: Leandra Medine, Founder of Man Repeller
E
If you are in interested in fashion, culture or feminism, you’ve probably heard of the media site Man Repeller, and/or its founder Leandra Medine. I’ve been a fan and follower of Leandra for several years, so getting the chance to chat with her was a real treat. Leandra launched Man Repeller originally as a fashion blog while in college at the New School. For her it was a platform to write, as well as make her stand out from the competition when applying for magazine jobs in New York. This was 2010.

Thanks to being super authentic and playful, Man Repeller quickly took off. The site and Leandra became stars, receiving a huge profile in The New York Times, brand partnerships with major fashion and beauty brands and a front row seat at top runway shows. Dream come true? In some ways. What began as a vehicle to land a job became the best job for Leandra. But we learn is that, even as her company has grown fast over a short period of time, Leandra, at 28 years old, is still trying to figure a lot out, including her own future. Is there a talk show down the road? I say yes.

For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 621: Scott Oldford, Infinitus Founder

My guest today is one of the MOST interesting people under the age of 30 that I’ve ever met. Let me just share his brief bio for you in his words… “In June 2013, I was $726,000 in debt due to a failed business venture. For many people, that may have signaled the end of their entrepreneurial passions. But desperation has this funny way of unlocking creativity. The only way to get out of this mess was to find something that worked and leverage the hell out of it. So that’s what I did and three years later, not only have I paid off all the debt. I’ve generated multiple millions in revenue. I use my 12 years of experience in entrepreneurship and online marketing to help other entrepreneurs grow their businesses.” Fascinating right? During our interview we learn how he got into that massive amount of debt in the first place. And how does a 26 year old have 12 years of entrepreneurial experience?

For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 616: Adam and Sheila Torabi, Farnoosh's Parents (Replay)

Today’s interview is an experience I will never forget. I’m actually surprised that it took me this long to bring my parents onto the show. They have been one of my biggest supporters since day one but particularly with this podcast. They knew how much it meant to me. They listen every day and give me feedback. They’re my biggest fans.

We talk about it on the show so often that who we are as people, especially when it comes to our values, perspectives and emotions around money, stem from childhood and often how our parents communicated over money and interacted with money. I talk about all of that with Adam and Sheila Torabi. In Farsi or in Persian, they’re known as [Farrokh] and [Sheida], but they changed their names. I finally get to the bottom of this in our official podcast interview today and it was a blast going all “Barbara Walters” on them. I didn’t let them off the hook.

I asked them why they fought about money when I was a kid because that’s the sort of stuff that really sticks with you for life, right? I was a little scared to ask that question because I’m sure it brings up as many emotions for them, as it does for me. But I really wanted to know. And more importantly, how did they reconcile those differences? And of course, we’ll talk about their immigration and the importance of education. My dad just got laid off, believe it or not, at 62. How’s he dealing with that? All that and more plus my mom’s number one tip for a lasting marriage. My parents are celebrating their 38th anniversary this August.

For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 615: Dan Ariely, Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics (Replay)

Dan Ariely is our special guest. He is the author of several New York Times bestsellers including Predictably Irrational, The Upside of Irrationalityand The Honest Truth About Dishonesty.

I actually tapped Dan for his expertise just recently for my Oprah column about ways to combat money myths and save better. Dan and I were two of the keynote speakers at the Northern California Financial Planners Association gathering. Such an honor to be in his company.

A little more about Dan: He is a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight and a Chief Behavioral Economist with a new savings app, Qapital. He’s a multiple-time TED talker, whose speeches have been viewed millions of times. He is the James B.
