Ep 109: Entrepreneur Diaries: What I’ve Learned 9 Months into Entrepreneurship
Today, I am finally back with another solo episode to share my entrepreneur diaries, how it’s been going, 9 months into entrepreneurship.True confession, these episodes are the HARDEST for me to do. I feel like I have so much going on in my head and it’s hard to unpack it or know how to unpack it in the way that will be most helpful to others. So I put it off. Here’s the deal: I have good days, I have bad days, I have days where I feel like I know exactly what I’m doing, where I want to go, and the path I need to take to get there. On other days, I feel like, I don’t what the hell am I doing. I melt into a ball of sadness and confusion because I feel like, I don’t know what this is all leading me to. I’m just being honest. On those days, I feel like I’m supposed to have it all figured out and I don’t and I’m a disappointment to myself and others.Clearly, you can see that I’m very hard, too hard on myself.I’m working on that.So in this episode, I’m going to share with you what I know right now: What’s worked, what hasn’t worked 9 months in, what i’m still figuring out, and what I’m encouraged by.I talk about how I’m dealing with loneliness, imposter syndrome, the highs and lows of having my own business, learning to sell my services, and so much more! REWIND: How to Run Your Side Hustle in 1 Hour A Day
Up until this year, the last quarter of every year always felt like the most stressful for me. This year is the first year that that's not the case for me. This year, I got better at getting things done, even under pressure. In this episode I’m sharing some of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started out side hustling and what I've learned from them. It’s important that you understand where I and most successful side hustlers went wrong and what I did to turn it around. These mistakes could have easily been avoided if I had only known how to create a realistic goals setting system. Now, I've mastered the "less talk, more hustle" approach, and it’s what has gotten me results. I spend less time thinking and talking about what I'm going to do and more time actually doing it. I learned to cut out all the fluff that makes you FEEL like you're doing something (to-do lists, buying fancy planners, well organized trello boards) and get down to business. By making these mistakes, I also learned some key lessons as to why most side hustlers aren’t making the progress they anticipated. You’re probably not accomplishing your goal, because you bit off too much or not taking action because you want everything to be perfect and are afraid of making a mistake. If you want more guidance on how to actually get things done, consider learning my signature Goal Getter Action Plan. I can show you how to run a side business in 7 hours per week. In this episode, I break down how you can quit stalling and make moves on your side hustle. Listen through to the end to get more info plus an early bird discount code to my signature Goal Getter Action Plan for just $27. REWIND: From Selling Tea Out of Her Trunk to Selling in Major Retailers: Nailah Ellis-Brown of Ellis Island Tea
Today’s REWIND guest is Nailah Ellis-Brown. I first heard about Nailah from my roommates, Nydia and Stefanie at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. They supported her business as part of the MBAs Across America program that they participated in (and you’ll hear more about this in the episode). I’ve been fascinated by Nailah every since. A Black Woman from Detroit with Jamaican roots, Ellis-Brown has made a name for herself as part of the Detroit manufacturing renaissance. Her distinctive hibiscus Ellis Island Tea, based on a family recipe and bottled in an urban 4,000 square foot plant, has expanded sales into six airports and locations across 12 Midwestern states along with shelf space in regional retailer Meijer, Whole Foods and most recently Sam Club stores. She’s been named one of the Forbes 30 Under 30, has been featured on MSNBC for a small business makeover, and she’s only getting started. Her plan was to go to school, work on wall street then quit and be an entrepreneur. But when she realized the student loan hustle, she wanted no parts of it. On today’s episode, Nailah gets into: How she’s been able to brew and bottle a recipe steeped in family tradition How she went from selling out of her trunk to selling in Sam’s clb Learning the science behind her How she took a leap of faith and started over from scratch How investing in herself and her business led to big rewards in major brand partnership Plus how she’s continuing to grow her brand Listen on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher and Google Play Links mentioned on this episode Ellis Island Tea Michigan State Product Center Think & Grow Rich Book Click here to subscribe via RSS feed (non-iTunes feed): http://sidehustlepro.libsyn.com/rss Announcements If you’re looking for a community of supportive side hustlers who are all working to take our businesses to the next level, join us here: http://sidehustlepro.co/facebook Social Media Info Connect on Instagram: Ellis Island Tea – @EllisIslandTea Side Hustle Pro – @sidehustlepro #SideHustlePro Hosted on Acast. REWIND: From Drowning in Debt to Making 5 Figures A Month (Courtney Sanders of Think and Grow Chick)
It’s Nicaila here with another special REWIND edition of Side Hustle Pro. Take a listen to this best of episode with Courtney Sanders. This is one of my favorite episodes because Courtney is so thorough! She is an entrepreneur who started making money online by packaging her expertise in productivity systems and goal achievement and has impacted thousands of people. But, even though she was starting to make 4 then 5 figures monthly in her business, she didn’t just quit her job. She planned it out, she was prepared and she really set a high standard for herself of what she needed to achieve before she would allow herself to quit. So Courtney’s episode is one that I came back to many, many times in 2017. I would literally re-listen to it over and over again as I prepared to leave my job. 1) Because it was like talking to a life coach and 2) It was a reminder that I could not just quit impulsively and expect success, I needed to establish a plan. In this this episode, Courtney breaks down: The inspiration for Think And Grow Chick and when she realized she could help other women think and grow into their best selves How she grew her company into a profitable business How she juggles her side hustle with her full time job Financial wisdom she has learned along the way When she knew it was time to take her side hustle to the next level Links mentioned on this episode REGISTER for Podcast Moguls Masterclass Think And Grow Chick website Click here to subscribe via RSS feed (non-iTunes feed): http://sidehustlepro.libsyn.com/rss Announcements Side Hustle Pro is now over 6100 members strong. Ep 92: How This Fly Sister Duo Built An Epic Online Boutique (Cee Cee’s Closet NYC)
Today in the guest chair we have self described accidental entrepreneurs Chioma and Uchenna, the Founders of Cee Cee's Closet NYC. What started with selling cute clutches that were brought back from Nigeria has expanded into a full fledged business incorporating products like headwraps, backpacks, and leather goods. Being a black-women-owned business to them meant having an opportunity to create highly functional products that tap into their Nigerian cultural heritage and specific needs. This is especially true when you think about their silk-lined headwraps. As two naturalistas, they wanted to remove the step of having to wear a bonnet or silk scarf underneath our headwraps to protect their hair. Therefore, they created a product that addressed that particular need. Most importantly, Chioma and Uchenna view Cee Cee's Closet NYC as an opportunity to have a positive economic impact on Nigeria. All of their products are made locally in Nigeria. They are making an impact and building a legacy at the same time. Ep 90: From the Kitchen Sink to Target Shelves: Melissa Butler of The Lip Bar
Today in the guest chair we have former Wall Street analyst turned Founder and CEO Melissa Butler. Melissa is a visionary who challenges the standard of beauty through the products, pricing, and ingredients in her brand, The Lip Bar. You may have come across The Lip Bar since it’s become a celebrity fave shared by the likes of Taraji P. Henson on Instagram and it is now sold in select Target stores. But before there was Target, there was just Melissa and her business partner, squeezed into a tiny bedroom in Brooklyn. Melissa launched The Lip Bar from her kitchen. She describes her move from stocks and bonds to beauty as a natural one, not because she loved makeup, but because she was frustrated with the beauty industry and ready to create a solution. Not only that, but she was tired of the harsh chemicals in ordinary cosmetics, so she created a vegan and cruelty-free product line. On today’s show, Melissa shares why she was passionate about disrupting the narrative on beauty and creating a line of cosmetics that are safe and affordable. Ep 85: Danielle Leslie Is Growing Her Online Course into a Million Dollar Business and She Wants to Teach You How
Today on the show, I am introducing you to my best kept secret: the woman who has taught me to turn my knowledge into a valuable, premium course. Her name is Danielle Leslie and she founded Culture Add™ Labs to help companies and individuals uncover their Culture Add™ and launch profitable products online. She is also the creator of #CourseFromScratch, an 8-week online intensive that helps people create & launch their profitable & poppin’ online courses. She has been an online marketer in Silicon Valley for almost 10 years and helped personal brands & influencers, including Guy Kawasaki, earn collectively millions of dollars by launching their online courses. One of the reasons I wanted to have Danielle on the show is because her framework for course launches addresses our common human tendency to get stuck on the preparation part and delay your launch. She teaches people like myself to not fall into the trap of creating your course content all before you’re ready to launch and instead, focus on what she calls the 4Cs. She breaks this all down in her masterclass, which you can sign up for at SideHustlePro.co/CourseFromScratch if you are interested. In my own case, I have wanted to launch a podcast training program for almost a year, and I have been dragging my feet because: I was overwhelmed with the thought of breaking all of the content down I knew it was really valuable information that could make people thousands of dollars and thus I knew I would need to charge a premium price point (and I was SCARED to set that premium price point) I turned to Danielle and with her guidance, I launched my podcast accelerator as an invite only program in February and it’s been an AMAZING experience so far. What I’ve learned from Danielle is: Focusing on creating a course that truly meets your student’s needs, means creating it with their active feedback, not creating it in a vacuum without their input I’ve also learned that it’s not going to be perfect the first time you do it so you have to get down to business and start, so you can improve. On today’s episode, Danielle gets into: Her straight line to the cash formula that shatters the most popular course creation narrative The tools she used to do a $20,000 course launch in 60 days with no email list Her MVC method to not overthink your launch and to pre-sell your course How her online course made $25,000 alone in one month on Instagram...and how it has exploded since then. As this episode premieres, Danielle just crossed the $100,000 mark, her first six figure month. And in today’s episode, she breaks down how she’s quickly approaching $1M in revenue this year If you want to learn how Danielle’s online course made $100,000 in one month alone from Instagram listen to this entire episode, and remember to sign up for her Course From Scratch class at SideHustlePro.co/CourseFromScratch. Ep 78: Nicole Walters Wants To Teach You To Add More Commas To Your Bank Account
Today in the guest chair, we have Nicole Walters. By age 28, Nicole was a highly-paid executive at a Fortune 500 company, managing multibillion dollar accounts. But something just wasn’t right. She felt like her job was paying the bills and feeding her family, but not her soul. So, live on Periscope, Nicole quit her corporate job to focus on opening her own private business and product development consulting firm, The Monetized Life. Through her programs and consulting, she shares her secrets to earning “passive income” with other entrepreneurs, including in her popular online course, 1K1Day. Nicole has been on my radar for some time and I thought what better way to kick off 2018, than with a woman who is pushing the boundaries of entrepreneurship and redefining what it means to package your skills into services and make money on your own terms. As Nicole says, she teaches people how to add commas to their bank accounts and learn that they don’t have to trade time for money. On today’s episode, Nicole gets into: Her 5 years of (debt free!) side hustling before quitting Why she quit her job LIVE on Periscope Generating $11,000 from a $12.99 product The streams of income in her business Listen on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher and Google Play Links mentioned on this episode NicoleWaltersTV Nicole’s Receipts NapturalNicole Slack The Storyteller’s Secret A Second Chance by Catherine Hoke This episode is brought to you by FreshBooks. Ep 77: How to Fear Less and Live Your Best Life in 2018
2017 was an amazing year for me (I got married, took my business to new heights, spent time with my family, was embraced into a new family and culture). I am so grateful for the lessons learned and blessings received. Something I may have shared less of is that it was also an emotional year and sometimes a downright stressful year. I pushed myself harder than I ever have, took on more responsibility at work, was challenged in unexpected ways, grew a lot and took a major leap and quit my job. Now, I enter 2018 with a new perspective and determination to do my best work and live my best life. 71: How This Entrepreneur Built A Life She No Longer Needs A Vacation From
Today in the guest chair I have online coach and personal trainer Tameika G. Tameika’s story is far from ordinary. Over the course of ten years, she completely flipped her lifestyle and her long term career path as a result. Years ago, she was overweight, living in her home country of Canada and just generally unhappy. But she decided she didn’t want her food addiction and obesity to be what defined her story and her end game. So she made drastic life changes to rewrite her own story. She lost 90 lbs and has kept it off for 10 years. Since losing 90 pounds, she has devoted her time to helping others achieve the same happiness she's found on this journey. As a Certified Personal Trainer, she has helped over 400 clients, both in person and online, lose a cumulative total of 3000+ pounds. And she did this all while side hustling. After several years side hustling, working in corporate and being a fitness professional on the side, she was finally able to build a life she no longer needs a vacation from. On today’s episode, Tameika gets into: Why heartbreak led her to make a radical life and professional change What made her choose Asia How she quit her job and found a way to move to another country How she kept costs low to work her “get out of a debt plan” The tipping point that made her quit her job How she focuses on her purpose and her passion How she paid her rent in full for the year so she can focus on her purpose and passion Listen on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher and Google Play Links mentioned on this episode TameikaG.com The Whole Experience retreat Tony Robbins Money Master the Game Tony Robbins Unshakeable book Gary Vee podcast Tameika’s detailed blog post on building a life she doesn’t need a vacation from Click here to subscribe via RSS feed (non-iTunes feed): http://sidehustlepro.libsyn.com/rss Announcements Side Hustle Pro is now over 4800 members strong. As an accomplished designer and trained architect, she used her Master's degree from Morgan State University and Bachelors of Arts from Penn State University to establish her brand in Baltimore City, Maryland. I met Kalilah at the Rise Empowerment conference in DC in 2016. All I remember is her dressed in her Mess in a Bottle Gear and handing out free product to the conference speakers.
