63: How to Run Your Side Hustle in 1 Hour A Day
Up until this year, the last quarter of every year always felt like the most stressful for me. This year is the first year that that's not the case for me. This year, I got better at getting things done, even under pressure. In this episode I’m sharing some of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started out side hustling and what I've learned from them. It’s important that you understand where I and most successful side hustlers went wrong and what I did to turn it around. These mistakes could have easily been avoided if I had only known how to create a realistic goals setting system. Now, I've mastered the "less talk, more hustle" approach, and it’s what has gotten me results. I spend less time thinking and talking about what I'm going to do and more time actually doing it. I learned to cut out all the fluff that makes you FEEL like you're doing something (to-do lists, buying fancy planners, well organized trello boards) and get down to business. By making these mistakes, I also learned some key lessons as to why most side hustlers aren’t making the progress they anticipated. You’re probably not accomplishing your goal, because you bit off too much or not taking action because you want everything to be perfect and are afraid of making a mistake. If you want more guidance on how to actually get things done, consider learning my signature Goal Getter Action Plan. I can show you how to run a side business in 7 hours per week. In this episode, I break down how you can quit stalling and make moves on your side hustle. Listen through to the end to get more info plus an early bird discount code to my signature Goal Getter Action Plan for just $27. Evita has shattered the myth that people of color don’t travel. Ep 57: Up close with Morgan DeBaun: The Millennial CEO Shaping Black Digital Media
Today on the show, we have a woman who is a millennial CEO shaping Black digital media. Her name is Morgan DeBaun and she is the Founder of Blavity, one of the fastest growing digital media startups and a top destination for black youth culture. In March 2017, she launched a new lifestyle brand called 21Ninety, a website focused on beauty, health and wellness for women of color. She is one of only 12 Black women to raise over 1 million dollars in venture funding and has been featured on Essence, New York Magazine, Teen Vogue, Nylon, and was a finalist for 2016 TechCrunch Founder of the year. I first encountered Morgan at the Blavity EmpowerHer conference back in 2016. I was already impressed enough with Blavity to buy a ticket, but what Morgan created in that room, really sealed the deal for me. I needed to start Side Hustle Pro. As a matter of fact, when the emcee asked, I forget what the question was, but she basically asked who wanted to share a new initiative or something, I raised my hand, got on stage and announced to this room full of black women creators and entrepreneurs that I was starting Side Hustle Pro. And there was NO turning back after that. So it's a pleasure to welcome Morgan to the guest chair today. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 56: How Lisa Price Turned Her Side Hustle Into A Multimillion Dollar Business
Today in the guest chair, we have Lisa Price, Founder of multi-million dollar hair and beauty company Carol’s Daughter.I am really honored to have Lisa in the guest chair, as hers is a product that transformed my personal journey to loving my natural hair and natural beauty. When I learned about Carol’s daughter’s back in the day when I was in college, I used to have it shipped to my dorm room. And this is when I was a broke college student and had no business ordering anything online. But that’s how crucial it was for me to obtain a product that could actually moisturize and nourish my kinky threads. And since then, I have followed Lisa Price’s entrepreneurial journey. If you don’t know, Lisa Price and Carol’s Daughter has been in business for over two decades. In the early 1990s, Lisa began experimenting with making her own fragrances and perfume sprays when she wasn’t busy working at her full-time job in TV production. In 1992, Price dedicated herself full time to creating beauty products. With $100 in cash, her own kitchen, and the simple notion that people should follow their hearts, Lisa started building the collection that would become a beauty revolution. In August of 1994, Price officially established Carol’s Daughter (the company lovingly named after her mother). Initially starting out with a handful of steady customers, those numbers grew in leaps and bounds as women outside her neighborhood and circle of friends began to take notice. Today, Carol’s Daughter sells millions of dollars’ worth of products, having launched an exclusive collection in Target stores nationwide and on Target.com in March 2014 as well as extending into select Walgreens in March 2015. As a culmination to the Carol’s Daughter business trajectory, Lisa sold her company to L’Oréal USA in November 2014. Today on the show, Lisa walks us back through the journey of building Carol’s Daughter to what it is today. Ep 55: A Year of Side Hustle Pro
One year ago, June 22, 2016 to be exact, I created Side Hustle Pro podcast with a microphone and a dream. The road to Side Hustle Pro really started when I graduated with my MBA, but no job. I was feeling pretty dejected, especially after I kept going on interview after interview and getting rejection after rejection. Then I started to wrestle with the idea of doing my own thing, but for some reason, I just couldn’t pull the trigger, because I didn’t see myself as an entrepreneur. And the reason I didn’t see myself as an entrepreneur is because...the narrative of entrepreneurship was of white men. I wanted to gain confidence and motivation from women who look like me. And particularly women who started as side hustlers (because, let's face it, these student loans are not going to pay themselves). So I started a series of "Side Hustle Pro" interviews on my old blog while I was unemployed and trying to find my way. The rest, is herSTORY. I didn't know all the blessings and challenges that would unfold as a result of launching Side Hustle Pro. Today, on my one year anniversary, I pause to look back on year one. I don’t come up for air often enough to take notes and reflect on how this all came to be (I'm too busy working to release an episode each week!). SoI'm grateful to have had some time to look back. On today’s episode, I get into: The "secret" behind Side Hustle Pro's first year growth My hits and misses What I would do differently if I had to start it all over again My biggest lessons from Year 1 My goals and what's up next! Monif C. is a fashion forward, plus-size designer brand specializing in clothing and swimsuits for women sizes 14 - 24. Monif had no prior design experience, but grew frustrated with the lack of trendy plus size clothing and n 2005, teamed up with her mother to bring Monif C to life. Monif’s story is the perfect example of not letting one person’s no discourage you from continuing on your journey. In fact, Monif received a lot of No’s on the way to success, often being told that her designs were too sexy and that “plus-size women preferred not show off their bodies." But Monif refused to take No for an answer. Today, Monif C. is sold not only on MonifC.com, but in Asos.com, Forever21.com, as well as specialty boutiques throughout the US, London, Canada, and Australia just to name a few. In September 2017, Monif C. will celebrate 12 years serving plus size women. On today’s episode, Monif gets into: How she funded the business in the early days, before she was profitable That time she wouldn’t let Jill Scott have Monif C clothing for free Why press doesn’t automatically equal sales The investments she makes in her business Plus how she’s continuing to grow her brand This episode is brought to you by ZipRecruiter. Determined, she took to her kitchen to create meals packed with healthy organic ingredients—and nothing else. Soon, she began filling casual orders for friends and—in 2006— Yummy Spoonfuls® was born. On today’s episode we get into the details of that journey. Today’s show, is all about the Legal Aspects of Entrepreneurship. Art Steele is a tax lawyer who founded her own law firm in 2014 with practice areas in: small business counseling, international trusts and estate planning, immigration, and foreign tax compliance. Before launching her law firm, Art began her legal career as a transactional tax associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP in Washington, D.C. She later worked as Tax Counsel for Global Tax Planning at Discovery Communications in Silver Spring, M.D. Her international tax background brings a unique perspective when advising clients regarding small business formation, estate planning and immigration. Art is also an Adjunct Professor of Wills, Trusts and Estates at American University Washington College of Law and is barred in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Ep 48: CurlMix Founder Kim Lewis on How to Market Your Physical Products
Today on the show, we have a woman who dived into an industry she knew absolutely nothing about and with sacrifice and grind, has been able to grow a profitable company. Her name is Kim Lewis and she is the Creator of CurlMix. I first learned about CurlMix when I went to a conference where Kim was a vendor. I saw her table set up and the eye catching CurlMix boxes and I remember thinking, what a cool idea, I wonder what goes into producing those. Later, we connected on Facebook and through her daily updates, I really get to see the behind-the-scenes of building a new, young company from the ground up. One of the reasons I was and continue to be so in awe of Kim, is that she has accomplished so much under the age of 30. And that’s not to say us over 30 peeps aren’t as impressive when we start companies. I’m just always fascinated by people, especially black women, who are starting companies at an age when I was having a quarter life crisis and still figuring out my next career moves. On today’s episode, Kim gets into: What starting her first (and unprofitable company) taught her about being a business owner The importance of validating your idea How she secured press coverage BEFORE her launch Why if you're completely happy with the first version of your business, you waited too long to launch Tips on saving money to ship your physical products and much more I really love what Kim had to share. Christine Joy Design, LLC is a Brooklyn-based surface pattern design studio specializing in the home goods, apparel and consumer product markets. I first learned about Christine from a video on Facebook, that shared her journey to entrepreneurship and a partnership with West Elm. I actually saved this video two years ago for inspiration, before I even had any plans to start the Side Hustle Pro podcast. When I did start the podcast, I knew I would eventually need to have Christine in the guest chair. One of the reasons I was so intrigued by Christine, is that she already had a successful career as a marketer, when she said, you know what, this is not what I really want to be doing with my life...and she pivoted to found Christine Joy Design. How many of you have ever thought, oh it's too late or I've been doing this for so long, I don't want to start over. Well today's episode just might just make you rethink all of that. On today’s episode, Christine gets into: Why shouldn’t be afraid to pursue your passion...no matter what stage you are in your career How she took a leap of faith and started over from scratch How investing in herself and her business led to big rewards in major brand partnerships All of the revenue streams in her business Plus how she’s continuing to grow her brand I really love what Christine had to share. To kick off How to make a living doing what you love month, I want to address something that I've been asked a few times, both in the side hustle pro community on Facebook and in one-on-one emails and text messages. And that question is: how do I side hustle without getting fired? I think it’s so important that I pause to address this concern, because it may be the thing that’s preventing your from taking your side hustle to that next level. Ep 41: How to Create Your First Online Course
Today, we are going to get into one of the most common side hustles out there: creating your own online course. Nowadays, it seems like everyone and their mother has an online course. From how to grow your social media pages to how to build your first app, you name it, online courses are extremely prevalent these days. Even Shonda Rhimes has an online course! It’s nothing new, online courses have existed for a while now, what’s new is the abundance of technology and plug and play platforms out there, so the barriers to entry have really decreased and so anyone, literally anyone can create a course. You can use easy to replace templates and have your own school up online in no time. Now, you might be wondering, well…why is everyone creating courses, should I? Is this a viable side hustle? Well, the reason it’s such a popular revenue stream, is because with an online course, you can package your knowledge and create a funnel, so that you’re constantly getting students and have a passive stream of income in your business. But hold on, before you think creating an online course is easy peasy, there are many steps you need to take before you can get your course to be a passive and consistent money maker. Today, I’ll get into: How to know what your online course should be about How to setup your online course How to record your content How to price your course How to market your course Listen on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher and Google Play Click here to subscribe via RSS feed (non-iTunes feed): http://sidehustlepro.libsyn.com/rss Announcements Important Announcements: Side Hustle Pro is now over 1500 members strong and the group is growing by hundreds each week. EP 39: Why You Need to Focus on One Side Hustle At a Time
Former Side Hustle Pro guest Maya Elious shared that the number one thing she would tell any entrepreneur is to niche down. After her episode, a few people in the Side Hustle Pro community talked about how illuminating and critical this advice was. But a few people commented that it was hard for them to niche down, because they were worried about putting themselves into a box. Or to be labeled as one thing. That got me thinking about how too many times, we are scared to niche down and narrow our audience, because we are actually trying to focus on too many side hustles at once. On this episode, I get real about: Why trying to be a Janelle of All Trades leads you to be a master of none Why you need to choose a lane The fact that it’s hard to do more than one thing really well, especially if you are still working on being excellent at one. And definitely if you’re still side hustling. Real life examples of people who are known for many things...and the secret to their success How focusing on one side hustle at a time gives you more time to target the right audience HOW to choose the lane for you Links mentioned in this episode: Oprah’s tough start with the OWN network Diddy’s leaves restaurant business Listen on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher and Google Play Click here to subscribe via RSS feed (non-iTunes feed): http://sidehustlepro.libsyn.com/rss Important Announcements: If you’re interested in growing your business and brand using the powers of Instagram, register for the MASTER THE GRAM mini course. Today in the guest chair we have a woman I consider the queen of apps. Her name is Sheena Allen and she is a tech entrepreneur. At the time, she had no tech background and was a psychology and film major and on a whim decided to launch a mobile application company. Giving herself a year to see if she would see any success with her company, Sheena Allen Applications, she eventually found that success with app #3, Dubblen. Ep 22: What I Learned At The Signature CEO Conference That Every Entrepreneur Should Know
A bold decision to pitch myself for an opportunity landed me right next to my business idol. In early 2016, the Signature CEO conference landed on my radar as it was on the list of appearances CurlBox Founder and CEO Myleik Teele had on her website and it was right in my neck of the woods. Initially, I thought a conference specifically tailored to wedding and event planners would not be relevant to me. But when I took a closer look at the agenda, I realized the knowledge that would be shared would be both valuable and applicable to my own brand. I brainstormed ways that I could contribute value to the conference organizer and pitched myself to cover the conference as press. On today’s episode, I get into: Why you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take Myleik Teele’s social media strategy gems to take your business to the next level Why Shea Radiance Founder Funlayo Alabi wants us to dare to be different How Personal Finance Coach Dominique Broadway leads entrepreneurs to financial greatness Wedding Planner Tiffany Chalk’s strategy for selling your value not your price Listen on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher and Google Play Links and people mentioned in this episode: Signature CEO conference Perfect Planning Myleik Teele 1000 True Fans Dominique Broadway Funlayo Alabi Tiffany Chalk Dan Kennedy Show notes from this week's episode: SideHustlePro.co Click here to subscribe via RSS feed (non-iTunes feed): http://sidehustlepro.libsyn.com/rss Important Announcements: I’m updating my Mastering The Cold Email templates. Ep 19: How Rejection Led Me To Be A Side Hustle Pro
A rejection from Google was the best thing that ever happened to me. Two years ago I was an MBA intern at Google. I didn’t get the offer. Dejected, I refused to talk about it, unsure of how to unpack the experience. On today’s episode I’m sharing why that experience, along with other “rejections” were really blessings that positively fueled my side hustle mission. Here are just a few nuggets from this episode: Google’s ‘No’ led me to my ultimate purpose: inspiring people to live unboxed and without apologies Failure is an event, not a personality trait Failure taught me to stop waiting to be chosen and instead choose myself Everyone should start a side hustle, even if you don’t want to be a full-time entrepreneur Links mentioned in this episode: The Beginner's Guide To Being Awesome by Brandon Carter Side Hustle Pro Facebook Group Show notes from this week's episode: SideHustlePro.co Click here to subscribe via RSS feed (non-iTunes feed): http://sidehustlepro.libsyn.com/rss Important Announcements:If you listened to last week’s episodes, you know I’m gearing up to release the exact email templates I used to land even the most hard to reach guests. Ep 17: Mastering The Art Of The Cold Email
On this episode, I'm sharing the art of reaching out to potential collaborators, customers and clients via the cold email. While many of many of my guests are people I know or have met, 50% of the women I interview on my podcast were complete strangers before I reached out to them via email. In this episode I’m sharing the art of writing enticing cold emails that get responses. Here are some of my key tips: Preparation Do your research - Google, social media Consider what’s in it for them Eliminate words like, “pick your brain” from your vocabulary Keep a Google doc with your email templates and tweak for each individual outreach Revise as you learn what works Start a Template Document Make sure every person you reach out to knows why you appreciate their work and the value the collab would bring Be prepared to GIVE before you get Make it EASY for them to collaborate. Propose dates and times (hello, Calendly!) and offer to work around their schedule.
