I’m coming to you live with another solo episode, and the topic of discussion: transitioning into motherhood and getting back into the entrepreneurship life. I’m giving you a behind-the-scenes look into how I’m flowing in this new uncharted territory for my life and my career. I went from being an entrepreneur with no kids to a momtrepreneur with new expectations, some of which I've had to shift my gears about with regard to my new lifestyle. Because my old life was all I knew, I was subconsciously basing my post-maternity leave expectations on my old life, which didn’t leave room for the ebbs and flows of my new normal with baby and business. And in the midst of it all, there were a few things I didn’t anticipate. Guys, I’m back! And if you’re asking yourself, ‘Back? Where did she go?’ then this is the episode for you to listen to. I’m fresh off maternity leave. My husband and I had our first child, a beautiful baby boy back in April, and despite all that’s going on, I couldn’t be happier and more grateful for how things turned out. When we found out we were pregnant, we could have never imagined that we would be having a baby during a pandemic. The only Corona I knew about was the beer. But we did it and we made it through with God’s grace. I was fortunate to be able to select and be seen by all Black women doctors for my prenatal care. My baby was even delivered by a Black woman (Nigerian!) doctor, so it was just #BlackGirlMagic throughout my entire experience. Melissa Mitchell is changing the way we view art. She’s an “accidental” artist with a love for vibrant colors, unique shapes, and bold dark lines. In 2014 when the infamous snow storm hit Atlanta, Melissa took to old arts and crafts and began to create. From there, she went on social media to showcase what she was doing, and to her surprise, people expressed their interest in her pieces of art. That birthed Abeille Creations. From then, Melissa has created over 500 original art pieces, and has made her art come to life in the form of headwraps, home decor, textiles and more! She describes her experience as a “classic case of following God’s voice and never looking back,” which is so inspiring as she’s a self-taught artist. Her head wraps have graced Lupita Nyong'o in Vogue Magazine, and her work was also showcased in ESSENCE Magazine’s ‘My City, My Way.’ Melissa’s story is one that teaches us to not chase after money, but after influence. An entrepreneur knows what it is to have a heart of a servant. Holli Draines had a desire to protect the vulnerable, which led to her career in law enforcement with 13 years as a secret service agent. For her, entrepreneurship came as a “blessing in disguise,” one she didn’t know she needed. In 2014, Holli lost her mother and sister, which led to a shift, not only in her personal life, but her professional life as well. This unfortunate event led her to step down from her role as an agent and become a full-time guardian to her beloved sister’s son, which she felt was her calling. “There’s so much more to being a boss than what’s on Instagram,” and Mielle Organics CEO Monique Rodriguez knows that all too well. Some of you might not know that I was an MBA intern for a summer at Google when I was working towards my business degree at the University of Michigan. And usually, the summer before your second year in business school is when most people receive job offers from their temporary employer to come back after graduation and work full-time. Today in the Side Hustle Pro guest chair is Dionna M. Dorsey, a gifted designer and brand development strategist and the creator of apparel line DISTRICT of CLOTHING. After graduating from Villanova University in 2002, Dionna moved to Italy to study fashion design and pursue a job in the fashion industry. She ended up relocating to New York City and designed outerwear for Oscar de la Renta and men's apparel for several other licenses. After rocky times hit the retail industry, she was eventually laid off from her job. She applied for job after job, but no one would hire her, so she made a decision to hire herself. She went on to open Dionna Dorsey Design, a design boutique that specializes in being creative – from graphic design to art direction, brand strategy, and website development. After teaching herself how to manipulate various metals into beautiful original jewelry pieces, and with the increasing demand from family and friends to create custom designs, Lorraine West Jewelry was conceived. Understanding that she needed a steady income to support herself as she grew her business, she worked for 4 years as a full-time employee then another 6 years freelancing as an illustrator, as an assistant fashion and prop stylist on video shoots and through other part time gigs besides selling her own work on the side. She became a full-time entrepreneur in 2010. Lorraine met Erykah Badu, early in her career, who attended the same poetry event as her. Lorraine’s work spoke for itself and she was commissioned to make pieces for Erykah Badu, Andre 3000, Common, among many other artists. As a full-time entrepreneur, Lorraine started bringing in consistent income by selling her jewelry at the Brooklyn Flea from 2010-2014, launched her brand e-commerce website in 2015, launched the custom fine jewelry division in 2011 which grew the business exponentially since. Sugar Hill Creamery is Harlem's only family-owned neighborhood ice cream shop. I’m back with an Entrepreneur Diaries episode to share some updates and kick-off 2020. I’m in the guest chair this week talking about how podcasting helped me figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Growing up, people often told me I was a good writer and I was fascinated by how people got jobs on TV, so when I learned about the profession of broadcast journalism, I thought the combo of writing and TV was the perfect fit. I pursued a Communications degree in undergrad and had a number of internships for major companies, but I graduated not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. The quest to determine how best to combine my interests and skills would continue for most of my life. In the summer of 2015 when I first learned about podcasts things started to take shape. I started contemplating launching my own, and in June 2016 I did just that! I could have never imagined I would be here with Side Hustle Pro a little over three years later. Today in the guest chair, we have Lisa Brown Alexander, Founder, and CEO of Nonprofit HR, and owner of the Wellspring Manor & Spa. I’ve interviewed a lot of side hustlers, but it’s not often that I interview a side hustler who is not an employee at their full-time job, but the CEO! And there is no better person to break down this topic than today’s guest, Dr. Pamela Jolly. Dr. Jolly is a graduate of Hampton University (B.S.), The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania (MBA), Boston University School of Theology ((Th.M.), and the Graduate Theological Foundation (Ed.D). Today in the guest chair, we have Rochelle Porter, also known as the “Print Queen.” She is a designer who has never met a blank surface she didn’t want to draw on. But, she nearly abandoned the idea of being a designer when she learned of the unethical labors practice in the fast fashion industry. After learning this, she pursued a career in a variety of industries including investment banking and communications. At her lowest moment, she found an eviction notice on the door. It was at that moment she knew something had to change, so she made the move back to Atlanta. Slowly but surely, clues that she should look into fashion again started coming into her life and she took them as a sign to get moving. She did her research and launched her lifestyle brand that specializes in responsibly made fashion and home decor all while holding down steady consulting gigs. This week, I chatted with Dr. Tykeia Robinson (also known as Keia). You may know her as co-host of the Gettin’ Grown Podcast, but she is also a PhD in Higher Education and multi-passionate side hustler with over 10 years of experience in higher education. She is also Head Coach of #TeamTypingFast, an online community of practice for anybody with work to do. I started getting to know Keia last year after attending the Gettin’ Grown live podcast show. Fun fact: she and co-host Jade are one of the BIGGEST inspirations for me doing my own live show. One of the things I admire most about Keia is her commitment to supporting, encouraging, and uplifting Black women. Today in the guest chair we have Dr. Lakeysha Hallmon (also known as Dr. Key), Founder, and CEO of The Village Market. I was blessed to cross paths with Dr. Hallmon at Summit 21; shout out to past Side Hustle Pro guest Jewel Burks Solomon for introducing us! Dr. Key started her career in education, but she wanted more freedom and flexibility. She wanted to be able to take her students outside. Soon got the idea for what was then called The Village Cafe, an economical vehicle that empowers the Black community through cooperative economics. From that seed, The Village Market has grown into an economic vehicle for #blackownedbusiness like no other. Prior to launching The Village Market, Dr. Hallmon had no experience at all planning events. She had never even booked a venue for an event, much less create her own event with hundreds of vendors, but she had a vision and she wasn’t scared to make it come to life. The Village Market is now not only a market, but also offers summits, trainings, and workshops for small Black-owned businesses. Today in the guest chair we have Sonia Lewis, the CEO of the Student Loan Doctor, LLC. Her business has been recognized as the first African American and woman-owned student loan repayment company in the country. You might be surprised to hear that before starting the Student Loan Doctor, Sonia didn’t have personal budgeting discipline, she was living paycheck-to-paycheck, and grappling with her own student loan debt. Even with a background and passion for higher education, Sonia was frustrated with the process of how to get information about her student loans and knew she had to do something. She worked on her personal finances and eventually started working with clients to help them manage their student loan debt. Through trials, testing, and gathering feedback, Sonia now runs a six-figure business and employs a team of full time and contractors. I am interrupting the pre-scheduled program for August, which was the Side Hustle Series, to bring you a quick entrepreneur diaries update to share my experience on the TODAY Show!!
