208: How I’m Transitioning Into Motherhood & Easing Back Into Entrepreneur Life

I’m coming to you live with another solo episode, and the topic of discussion: transitioning into motherhood and getting back into the entrepreneurship life. I’m giving you a behind-the-scenes look into how I’m flowing in this new uncharted territory for my life and my career. I went from being an entrepreneur with no kids to a momtrepreneur with new expectations, some of which I've had to shift my gears about with regard to my new lifestyle. Because my old life was all I knew, I was subconsciously basing my post-maternity leave expectations on my old life, which didn’t leave room for the ebbs and flows of my new normal with baby and business. And in the midst of it all, there were a few things I didn’t anticipate. Take a listen to this episode to find out how I had to re-frame my personal expectations for myself, re-learn how to set deadlines, and guard my priorities; adopt a new life and work style, and what I’m learning from the lives of other momtrepreneurs. Check out this episode and others on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. 207: Entrepreneur Diaries: I Had A Baby During the COVID-19 Pandemic!

Guys, I’m back! And if you’re asking yourself, ‘Back? Where did she go?’ then this is the episode for you to listen to. I’m fresh off maternity leave. My husband and I had our first child, a beautiful baby boy back in April, and despite all that’s going on, I couldn’t be happier and more grateful for how things turned out. When we found out we were pregnant, we could have never imagined that we would be having a baby during a pandemic. The only Corona I knew about was the beer. But we did it and we made it through with God’s grace. I was fortunate to be able to select and be seen by all Black women doctors for my prenatal care. My baby was even delivered by a Black woman (Nigerian!) doctor, so it was just #BlackGirlMagic throughout my entire experience. In today’s episode, I’m sharing my: ✔︎ What it felt like having a baby shower one week and going into quarantine lockdown the next week ✔︎ My experiences, cravings, and symptoms during every trimester ✔︎ The ways Coronavirus impacted my pregnancy and postpartum experience ✔︎ How I prepared to take maternity leave as an entrepreneur So what was it like having a baby during the COVID-19 pandemic? Take a listen. And share with all of your corona moms so they know they’ll be OK! Check out this episode and others on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. 206: From “Accidental Artist” to Being Worn by Lupita Nyong’o: This is Melissa Mitchell, Abeille Creations Founder

Melissa Mitchell is changing the way we view art. She’s an “accidental” artist with a love for vibrant colors, unique shapes, and bold dark lines. In 2014 when the infamous snow storm hit Atlanta, Melissa took to old arts and crafts and began to create. From there, she went on social media to showcase what she was doing, and to her surprise, people expressed their interest in her pieces of art. That birthed Abeille Creations. From then, Melissa has created over 500 original art pieces, and has made her art come to life in the form of headwraps, home decor, textiles and more! She describes her experience as a “classic case of following God’s voice and never looking back,” which is so inspiring as she’s a self-taught artist. Her head wraps have graced Lupita Nyong'o in Vogue Magazine, and her work was also showcased in ESSENCE Magazine’s ‘My City, My Way.’ Melissa’s story is one that teaches us to not chase after money, but after influence. 205: From Obama Secret Service to Her Own Firm: How Holli Draines Transitioned to Entrepreneurship

An entrepreneur knows what it is to have a heart of a servant. Holli Draines had a desire to protect the vulnerable, which led to her career in law enforcement with 13 years as a secret service agent. For her, entrepreneurship came as a “blessing in disguise,” one she didn’t know she needed. In 2014, Holli lost her mother and sister, which led to a shift, not only in her personal life, but her professional life as well. This unfortunate event led her to step down from her role as an agent and become a full-time guardian to her beloved sister’s son, which she felt was her calling. Although she had left her position, people were still reaching out to her for advice and wisdom. With an impressive resume and reputable relationships, Holli was able to organically launch her own security consulting firm: Elite Strategy Global. Her services include personal security, data privacy, cybersecurity, investigation vetting, and more. Get to know more about Holli and how she fell into entrepreneurship in this episode! 204: From Her Garage to Target Shelves: How CEO Monique Rodriguez Built Mielle Organics From the Ground Up

“There’s so much more to being a boss than what’s on Instagram,” and Mielle Organics CEO Monique Rodriguez knows that all too well. Monique founded the company in 2014 after her healthy, hair care regimen for her tailbone-length hair became somewhat of a craze among her social media followers. From living out her mother’s dream of being a nurse to pushing her own aspirations to the side, Monique decided that there had to be more than living paycheck-to-paycheck. After making it to the top of her payscale in nursing with no room for growth, she knew that the entrepreneurial spirit that began in her at the age of seven had to make its debut. Combining her love for hair, science, health, and taking time to sit still and ask God for direction, Monique received a vision to create a hair product. Little by little, she began to see what’s set in motion, now, come into play. The boss lady was already talking about hair care, hair health and her own mane journey on social media, which led to creating hair mixtures, to receiving a confirmation through DM that would propel her life purpose. Listen to this amazing story, and see how her popular natural hair care line came to be, just six short years ago. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. 203: How Uncharted Power Founder Jessica O. Matthews Is Bringing Energy Solutions to Underserved Populations

Jessica O. Matthews has covered every part of the side hustle sphere. She is the Founder & CEO of Uncharted Power, an award-winning, full-service power and data infrastructure company. 201: I QUIT my Job! (REWIND)

Some of you might not know that I was an MBA intern for a summer at Google when I was working towards my business degree at the University of Michigan. And usually, the summer before your second year in business school is when most people receive job offers from their temporary employer to come back after graduation and work full-time. But, plot twist, I didn’t receive an offer. That rejection, eventually, led me on the path to side hustling. I side hustled for over a year and a half until I was able to quit my full-time job, and pursue Side Hustle Pro full time. In this episode, I get honest about how I went from rejection to running my own six-figure business. Let’s rewind the tape! 195: How this Jewelry Designer Side Hustled for Over 10 Years Before Becoming An Entrepreneur (Lorraine West Jewelry)

Today in the Side Hustle Pro guest chair we welcome Lorraine West, the Founder of Lorraine West Jewelry. Lorraine developed an affinity for creating and donning unique jewelry at a young age and says she’s been an artist since she was in the 1st grade. Her mother's love for ornate pieces was the inspiration for her to delve into jewelry design while studying Illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology. After teaching herself how to manipulate various metals into beautiful original jewelry pieces, and with the increasing demand from family and friends to create custom designs, Lorraine West Jewelry was conceived. Understanding that she needed a steady income to support herself as she grew her business, she worked for 4 years as a full-time employee then another 6 years freelancing as an illustrator, as an assistant fashion and prop stylist on video shoots and through other part time gigs besides selling her own work on the side. She became a full-time entrepreneur in 2010. Lorraine met Erykah Badu, early in her career, who attended the same poetry event as her. Lorraine’s work spoke for itself and she was commissioned to make pieces for Erykah Badu, Andre 3000, Common, among many other artists. As a full-time entrepreneur, Lorraine started bringing in consistent income by selling her jewelry at the Brooklyn Flea from 2010-2014, launched her brand e-commerce website in 2015, launched the custom fine jewelry division in 2011 which grew the business exponentially since. In episode 195 of Side Hustle Pro, Lorraine shares: What led her to start selling her jewelry How she came to design custom pieces for artists like Erykah Badu, Common, and more How she side hustled before she could work on her jewelry business full-time Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher & sidehustlepro.co/lorrainewestjewelry This episode is brought to you by: Causebox Go to causebox.com/hustlepro and use the code HUSTLEPRO to get your first box for 30% off Blinkist Go to blinkist.com/hustlepro to try it FREE for 7 days AND save 25% off your new subscription. They began thinking about how to develop a business based on foods they love, and it was an experience at a pop-up ice cream shop while on a trip in Washington, DC, that sparked the idea to open an ice shop in Harlem. Petrushka and her husband went all in and found a location, secured a loan, got permits, and opened Sugar Hill Creamery in only 10 months! She eventually pivoted to blogging but was still feeling stuck until she read the book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. Would you believe that Brittani used to struggle with keeping her house clean and organized? She used the processes and tips from the book to declutter her home, and friends started to take notice. As she continued to help friends and family, she realized she could turn her side hustle into a profitable full-time business. 184: How Real Housewives of Atlanta Star Tanya Sam Pivoted from Nursing to Tech Investor

Today in the Side Hustle Pro guest chair we have Tanya Sam. Tanya is a tech-savvy investor who has made it her mission to empower the next generation of minority entrepreneurs. You also know her from TV. She appears on one of my favorite guilty-pleasure shows, The Real Housewives of Atlanta! She is currently Director of Partnerships at TechSquare Labs, Co-leads the Ascend 2020 Atlanta program that supports minority and female founders, and Co-founded BuiltxWomen, a business accelerator for female entrepreneurs. It may come as a surprise that Tanya didn’t always have the desire to pursue entrepreneurship in technology. She actually studied to be a nurse and had a 10-year career in the industry. She started helping her fiancé with his business on her days off and eventually decided to start her own business. With her background as a side hustler and as an entrepreneur, she has mentored over 60 companies with women and minority founders and helped invest in over 50 companies that have generated a total of over $100 million in revenue. Making the shift from healthcare to tech wasn’t easy. In this episode, Tanya dives deep into how she conquered imposter syndrome during this huge pivot in her career. I’m back with an Entrepreneur Diaries episode to share some updates and kick-off 2020. This episode is divided into three parts: 2019 lessons, 2019 wins, and how I’m preparing for this mompreneur life. 2019 was an excellent year (The TODAY Show, Side Hustle Pro Live, and O, The Oprah Magazine!) because I saw a lot of my hard work pay off. But as you may have noticed, I experienced some burnout after my live show in October. I share some of the most important lessons I learned that will be so helpful to seeing Side Hustle Pro continue to grow. And as you can see from the episode title, I’m going to be a mompreneur soon! Muoyo and I are very excited to experience parenthood. There are a lot of exciting changes coming in 2020 and I’m really looking forward to learning and growing. Today’s episode is a REWIND with Danielle Leslie, the Creator of Course From Scratch, an 8-week online intensive that helps people create and launch their profitable online courses. She has been an online marketer in Silicon Valley for almost 10 years and helped personal brands and influencers, including Guy Kawasaki, earn collectively millions of dollars by launching their online courses. She teaches people like myself to not fall into the trap of creating your course content all before you’re ready to launch and instead, focus on what she calls the 4Cs. Danielle helped me launch my signature podcast accelerator program, Podcast Moguls. I’m excited for you to hear Danielle’s story and get some inspiration to launch your online course. Today’s episode is a REWIND episode with Melissa Butler, Founder, and CEO of The Lip Bar. Melissa is a former Wall Street analyst turned Founder and CEO. 177: REWIND: How Lisa Price Turned Her Side Hustle Into A Multimillion-Dollar Business

Today’s episode is a REWIND episode with Lisa Price, the Founder of multi-million dollar hair and beauty company Carol’s Daughter. Why do I love this episode? Lisa came from a space of side hustling because she loved her full-time job. She was filled with creative and positive energy after work, so she used that to fuel her love for developing her own products. If you don’t know, Lisa Price and Carol’s Daughter has been in business for over two decades. In 1992, Lisa dedicated herself full time to creating beauty products. With $100 in cash, her own kitchen, and the simple notion that people should follow their hearts, Lisa started building the collection that would become a beauty revolution. In August of 1994, Price officially established Carol’s Daughter (the company lovingly named after her mother), and the rest is history! 176: REWIND: CurlMix Founder Kim Lewis On How To Market Your Physical Products

Today’s episode is a REWIND episode with Kim Lewis, the Founder of CurlMix. Kim and her husband Tim are two entrepreneurs I really admire. They are teammates in life, love, and business and their hard work has really paid off. Since this episode originally aired, they’ve grown exponentially, appeared on Shark Tank, turned down a $400,000 offer from the Sharks, and have turned CurlMix into a company with a $12 million dollar valuation. In this episode, you’ll hear them in the early days, before they zeroed in on MAKING products and were still selling do it yourself kits. 175: REWIND: Meet Janice Bryant Howroyd: The first African American Woman To Run A $1-Billion Business

Today’s episode is a REWIND episode with Janice Bryant Howroyd, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The ACT-1 Group, the largest privately held, woman-owned workforce solutions company founded in the U.S. I love this episode because Janice exudes confidence, energy, and just makes you want to walk into a room and take up space. As Auntie Janice (as I now refer to her in my head) likes to say, “knowledge married to experience breeds confidence.” When you have the experience and knowledge you must own that confidence. I listened to this episode twice as I was riding to the Today Show for my appearance in August 2018, and it really did give me confidence. I often re-listen to this episode whenever I’m nervous about rising to a new level in my business. I’m excited for you to hear Janice share how she became the first African American woman to operate a company that generates more than $1 billion in annual revenue. 173: How Podcasting Helped Me Find My Voice and My Purpose

I’m in the guest chair this week talking about how podcasting helped me figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Growing up, people often told me I was a good writer and I was fascinated by how people got jobs on TV, so when I learned about the profession of broadcast journalism, I thought the combo of writing and TV was the perfect fit. I pursued a Communications degree in undergrad and had a number of internships for major companies, but I graduated not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. The quest to determine how best to combine my interests and skills would continue for most of my life. In the summer of 2015 when I first learned about podcasts things started to take shape. I started contemplating launching my own, and in June 2016 I did just that! I could have never imagined I would be here with Side Hustle Pro a little over three years later. In this episode, I explain how podcasting has allowed me to see how I can use my voice and my experiences to impact others for the better. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify. 171: How this CEO Opened a Successful Bed & Breakfast on the Side (Lisa Brown Alexander of Wellspring Manor & Spa)

Today in the guest chair, we have Lisa Brown Alexander, Founder, and CEO of Nonprofit HR, and owner of the Wellspring Manor & Spa. I’ve interviewed a lot of side hustlers, but it’s not often that I interview a side hustler who is not an employee at their full-time job, but the CEO! Lisa was driven to serve the often-overlooked human resources needs for the social impact sector, and that is what first led her to found Nonprofit HR, now a 50-plus employee organization and the leading talent management firm in the country that works exclusively with the nonprofit sector. It took her about 15 years to build a solid team at Nonprofit HR, that would allow her to take a step back and focus on other initiatives. One initiative was opening the Wellspring Manor & Spa with her husband. It is an oasis of peace, quiet, and renewal created for guests seeking a relaxing, wellness-infused experience. Neither she nor her husband had a background in hospitality, but they purchased a property and launched within a year. In today’s episode, you will find out what led her to create the Wellspring Manor and Spa, even though she already had a booming career AND how she juggles being the boss at Nonprofit HR and at Wellspring Manor and Spa. 170: How Black Women Can Build Legacy Wealth (w/ Dr. Pamela Jolly)

Today in the guest chair we are exploring a topic that is near and dear to my heart: legacy wealth building in the African-American community. And there is no better person to break down this topic than today’s guest, Dr. Pamela Jolly. Dr. Jolly is a graduate of Hampton University (B.S.), The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania (MBA), Boston University School of Theology ((Th.M.), and the Graduate Theological Foundation (Ed.D). She started her career in banking and eventually saw a need to leverage her corporate experiences to assist minority business enterprises to grow. So, in 2004, she launched Torch Enterprises Inc., a firm committed to developing minority enterprises capable of arriving at legacy wealth both individually and corporately for their communities. For over a decade, she has been committed to developing data-driven strategies that lead to wealth as a legacy in the African American Community. Dr. Jolly uses her extensive background in financial services, strategy, community development, and theology, to help entrepreneurs and organizations succeed. 167: How Rochelle Porter Launched Her Apparel and Lifestyle Brand While Working Full-Time

Today in the guest chair, we have Rochelle Porter, also known as the “Print Queen.” She is a designer who has never met a blank surface she didn’t want to draw on. But, she nearly abandoned the idea of being a designer when she learned of the unethical labors practice in the fast fashion industry. After learning this, she pursued a career in a variety of industries including investment banking and communications. At her lowest moment, she found an eviction notice on the door. It was at that moment she knew something had to change, so she made the move back to Atlanta. Slowly but surely, clues that she should look into fashion again started coming into her life and she took them as a sign to get moving. She did her research and launched her lifestyle brand that specializes in responsibly made fashion and home decor all while holding down steady consulting gigs. 165: How PhD, Gettin’ Grown Podcast Host, and Coach of #TeamTypingFast Dr. Tykeia Robinson Juggles it All (Side Hustle Spotlight)

This week, I chatted with Dr. Tykeia Robinson (also known as Keia). You may know her as co-host of the Gettin’ Grown Podcast, but she is also a PhD in Higher Education and multi-passionate side hustler with over 10 years of experience in higher education. She is also Head Coach of #TeamTypingFast, an online community of practice for anybody with work to do. I started getting to know Keia last year after attending the Gettin’ Grown live podcast show. Fun fact: she and co-host Jade are one of the BIGGEST inspirations for me doing my own live show. One of the things I admire most about Keia is her commitment to supporting, encouraging, and uplifting Black women. In addition to Gettin’ Grown and #TeamTypingFast, Keia’s full-time job involves doing research that informs curriculum, policy, and practice, and she develops training for school faculty leaders. In today’s episode, she shares how she juggles everything, and what she’s learning along the way. 164: How The Founder of The Village Market Is Bringing National Exposure To Black-Owned Businesses (w/ Dr. Key Hallmon)

Today in the guest chair we have Dr. Lakeysha Hallmon (also known as Dr. Key), Founder, and CEO of The Village Market. I was blessed to cross paths with Dr. Hallmon at Summit 21; shout out to past Side Hustle Pro guest Jewel Burks Solomon for introducing us! Dr. Key started her career in education, but she wanted more freedom and flexibility. She wanted to be able to take her students outside. Soon got the idea for what was then called The Village Cafe, an economical vehicle that empowers the Black community through cooperative economics. From that seed, The Village Market has grown into an economic vehicle for #blackownedbusiness like no other. Prior to launching The Village Market, Dr. Hallmon had no experience at all planning events. She had never even booked a venue for an event, much less create her own event with hundreds of vendors, but she had a vision and she wasn’t scared to make it come to life. The Village Market is now not only a market, but also offers summits, trainings, and workshops for small Black-owned businesses. 163: From Side Hustler to CEO: Meet Sonia Lewis, Founder of The First African American & Woman-Owned Student Loan Repayment Company

Today in the guest chair we have Sonia Lewis, the CEO of the Student Loan Doctor, LLC. Her business has been recognized as the first African American and woman-owned student loan repayment company in the country. You might be surprised to hear that before starting the Student Loan Doctor, Sonia didn’t have personal budgeting discipline, she was living paycheck-to-paycheck, and grappling with her own student loan debt. Even with a background and passion for higher education, Sonia was frustrated with the process of how to get information about her student loans and knew she had to do something. She worked on her personal finances and eventually started working with clients to help them manage their student loan debt. Through trials, testing, and gathering feedback, Sonia now runs a six-figure business and employs a team of full time and contractors. 161: Entrepreneur Diaries: I was on the TODAY show!

I am interrupting the pre-scheduled program for August, which was the Side Hustle Series, to bring you a quick entrepreneur diaries update to share my experience on the TODAY Show!! I was a guest for the “Passion to Paycheck” series during the week of August 19th. It was a surreal moment for me to see my three years of hard work on Side Hustle Pro lead me to this incredible opportunity. While I watched the beautiful opening montage the TODAY team put together for my introduction, I was reminded of the journey that has led up to this. In this episode, I share how this opportunity came to be, the behind-the-scenes of what it’s like to be on the Today Show, and the lessons I learned from all of it. Thank you for listening and sharing. There would be no Side Hustle Pro if no one listened, so huge THANK YOU for listening!
