159: How to NOT Let Fear Cripple You When You’re Starting Your Side Hustle (Side Hustle Series Pt 1)

This episode kicks off The Side Hustle Summer Series! This August, I’m doing a series all about side hustling and breaking down: How to not let fear cripple you when you’re starting your side hustle How to build the foundation of your business even when it’s still a side hustle Everything I learned about balancing my side hustle with my 9 to 5How to market your side hustle for FREE when you’re just getting started How to finance your side hustle before it’s making Money (AND how to start monetizing) In this kickoff episode, I get open and vulnerable about my journey from side hustle to a profitable business and talk about the disparaging thoughts I used to tell myself. I was so afraid of people thinking I was a failure because I didn’t secure a job offer after earning my Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Michigan. I eventually learned that fear was holding me back, instead of helping me grow. I hope that sharing my thoughts and how I reframed them helps you change your thinking and kickstart your side hustle. 150: After a Brain Disorder Forced Her to Retire Early, Her Greatest Business Idea was Formed (Zakia Blaine of FBF Fitness)

Today in the guest chair we have Zakia Blain, the Founder of FCKbeingFAT (FBF Fitness). With no background in fitness, but plenty of background in every fad diet and weight loss trick around, Zakia simply wanted to inspire others, while helping them lose weight the right way. Through the creation of her international FBF Weight loss Challenge and FBF Fitness apparel, she has managed to do just that. While on the journey to expand FBF Fitness, Zakia discovered that her audience was interested in shapewear. So rather than promote another company’s brand, she decided to create her own and, with that, FBF Fitness evolved into FBF Body. The highly sought after shapewear has taken on a cult following of its own, largely in part due to Zakia’s open and honest method of sharing herself actually wearing it and looking amazing while doing so. In today’s episode, we will learn how she got started, how she works through having a brain disorder to grow her business, and the hard lessons she’s learned along the way about hiring and more. 148: Meet the Co-Founder of Africa's 1st Brand of Foldable Flats (Taffi Ayodele of Thando’s)

Today in the guest chair, we have Mrs. Taffi Ayodele the co-founder of Thando’s, a Lagos and NY based fashion company. Thando’s shoes are foldable ballerina flats, giving women a compact and comfortable shoe option that they can easily take with them on the go. Thando's is the brainchild of Taffi and her husband J.G. They met while pursuing their MBAs at the NYU Stern School of Business. Their love for each other, love for Africa and love for art, inspired the couple to create an innovative footwear line that facilitates a modern woman’s busy lifestyle while supporting African artists. Thando’s provides a platform for creative talent on the African continent by crowd-sourcing designs from African men and women who would otherwise have limited opportunities to design for a global audience. How amazing is that? That said, it was a lot of work to bring the brand to life. As Taffi shares in this episode, it wasn’t easy picking up and moving to a continent that she’d never lived on, plus learn to navigate the business in a completely different culture and navigate the highs and lows of that. But Taffi and JG were determined and they have created a remarkable product and are making their footprint across the globe (pun intended). Today in the guest chair is Briana Owens, the Founder of Spiked Spin. Briana is the perfect example that when you have a vision in your heart it doesn't matter what else exists in the market or what you think the competition might be you have to go after it. So, balancing her full-time job in advertising she received her certification in spin and got to work.Briana wanted to create an experience specifically with women of color in mind. And so—Spiked Spin was born. Spiked Spin classes are packed with a diverse array of young women and men committed to getting their bodies and lives together. On today's episode, I talk with Briana about how she got started, but also why it’s so important to have a spirit of discernment, a practice of being in tune with what's on your heart and following what's in your soul. We also talk about the importance of checking your ego and proving out your concept, before you take on debt or do things just for show. At Harlem Chocolate Factory, Jessica produces bars and brownies inspired by the rich ethnic heritage of her native Harlem community. Ep 118: Building Your Brand, Growing Your Following & Leveraging INFLUENCE w/ Brittany Hennessy

Today in the guest chair we have Brittany Hennessy. Brittany is a marketer and the author of INFLUENCER: Building Your Brand in the Age of Social Media. She was the first-ever Senior Director of Influencer Strategy & Talent Partnerships for Hearst Magazines Digital Media, and the co-founder of Carbon. Before reaching out to Brittany, I read her book and I found it extremely helpful. This year, I found myself on the receiving end of more requests for brand collaborations, partnerships and influencer posts that I ever had before. I used the INFLUENCER book templates to confidently negotiate counter offers or decline opportunities that were not right for my business without burning a bridge. So, as usual, when I discover something useful, I want to share it with you guys. I think that anyone can benefit from Brittany’s knowledge about influencer marketing. Especially if you have plans to build out and monetize your personal brand or ever work with another brand for any reason, for example having them sponsor an event, a podcast, a blog, or if you are invited to speak on a panel, this will be the episode to consult. Catherine is a Self Transformation Strategist for Women and the founder of the Fiercer Woman brand, where she empowers and motivates women with ways to get past their blocks and become their fiercest selves in life and business. Fun fact, when I first started my blog back in 2015, Catherine was one of the first people I come across. I came across Catherine when I was starting out in side hustling. I was attracted to her authentic approach to sharing marketing and content creating tips. She is personally someone I have purchased content from and learned from, and I always like sharing some of my best kept secrets with the side hustle pro audience, so I had to have her in the guest chair. Ep 113: Therapy for Black Girls' Dr. Joy Harden Bradford on How Founders Can Take Care of Their Mental Health

Today in the guest chair is the one and only, Dr. Joy Harden Bradford. Dr. Joy Harden Bradford is a Licensed Psychologist, Speaker, and the host of the wildly popular mental health podcast, Therapy for Black Girls. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Xavier University of Louisiana, her Master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from Arkansas State, and her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The University of Georgia. Her work focuses on making mental health topics more relevant and accessible for Blackwomen and she specializes in creating spaces for Black women to have fuller and healthierrelationships with themselves and others. She has been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, Bustle, Huffington Post, Black Enterprise, Women’s Health, BuzzFeed, Teen Vogue, and Essence. This episode is so important to me because I am passionate about breaking the stigma of mental health. Like any other part of our body, we need to take care of our mind. And as Founders, sometimes we think what we are experiencing is unique to us, so we go through a lot of internal torment trying to figure things out on our own. As I talk about with Dr. Joy, sometimes I have felt like, I don’t need to speak to anyone, it’s not that serious. But on today’s episode we get into: Why you shouldn’t wait to reach a breaking point before seeking support The truth about self care and why you can’t “self-care” yourself into not going to therapy What self sabotage looks like and how to overcome it How to thrive as a black founder As a reminder, this episode is in no way a substitute to seeking help from a licensed therapist in your state.
