This week Tom & Zeus celebrate their 300th episode with their review of the 1976 legendary album from KISS, "Destroyer!" This was KISS' 4th studio album and the 24th and LAST KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. KISS was riding high after their live album "Alive" broke through and went gold. The power and energy of a live KISS show was the missing ingredient to get KISS their big break. Not wanting to rest on their recent success, the band brought producer Bob Ezrin from Alice Cooper fame in to help them "get to the next level." Ezrin was like no producer KISS ever had before or since. Bringing the best out of the members and co-writing 7 of the 9 tracks, Ezrin's fingerprints were all over Destroyer. Destroyer was very different then the previous raw three albums. This album had choirs, ghost players, a ballad, orchestras and even a calliope. The final result was KISS most commercial, critically acclaimed and perhaps polarizing album. The album features some of KISS most legendary songs, including, Detroit Rock City, God Of Thunder, Shout It Out Loud, Beth and more. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. There is no better way to celebrate Shout It Out Loudcast's 300th episode than with an album review of perhaps KISS' best album. On the 58th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, Brad Rusthoven from the Slamfest Podcast, review the 1990 debut album from Mother Love Bone, "Apple." Mother Love Bone has legendary status amongst grunge fans. The band was formed in Seattle from another legendary early grunge band, Green River. The band was led by charismatic frontman and main songwriter, Andrew Wood. Guitarist Stone Gossard of Green River and latter Pearl Jam on rhythm and lead guitar and Bruce Fairweather on lead and rhythm guitar as well. Jeff Ament previously of Green River and later of Pearl Jam fame on bass and Greg Gilmore on drums. The album was a mixture of alt rock, glam metal and future grunge. Hard hitting lyrics which also showed a lighter and more fun side of the "Seattle Sound." Mother Love Bone was one of the earliest Seattle bands to be destined for greatness with their debut album coming on a major label. However, Andrew Wood's death from heroin overdose on March 19, 1990 was tragic end of this upcoming band. The album was released a few months later on July 19, 1990. A tribute album/band, Temple Of The Dog further created the legend of Mother Love Bone as did the breakout of Pearl Jam shortly thereafter. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick. His portrayal of James Evans, Sr. on the 1970's hit Good Times made him one of the greatest, if not the greatest TV dad in history. He brought a realism and a positive father figure to an audience who had seldom seen such positive role models. He had a long career with many memorable roles including Cleo McDowell on Coming To America, Admiral Percy Fitzwallace on the West Wing and Kunta Kinte on Roots. The guys discuss John Amos career and what he meant to them. So rest in peace the great John Amos with the Golden Arcs in that McDowell's in the sky! The Midnight Special was a late night musical variety show that ran on NBC from 1973 to 1981 after the Tonight Show on Friday nights, starting at 1:00 AM. KISS recorded four songs on April 1, 1975 just after they released Dressed To Kill. They performed 4 songs, Deuce, C'mon And Love Me (which never aired), She and Black Diamond. This legendary performance is KISS at its early inception. Hungry, raw and dangerous. Their look and performance can only be described as jaw dropping. On the 57th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, lead guitarist and songwriter from the band Restrayned, Tony Musallam review the 1984 self titled debut album from W.A.S.P.. W.A.S.P's debut album came two years after the band was formed. The Los Angeles based band was founded by lead singer, songwriter and bassist, Blackie Lawless. Blackie was a veteran of L.A. scene. Chris Holmes, who later became famous for his appearance in "Decline Of The Western Civilization II: The Metal Years", was the lead guitarist and rhythm guitarist along with Randy Piper. The drummer was Tony Richards. W.A.S.P. had become a target of the Parents Music Resource Center "PMRC" and their lead single "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)" was taken off their debut album by their label for fear of backlash. The album featured hard rock, metal and shock rock as well. Blackie's trademark vocals and shock themes separated W.A.S.P. from a lot of the other L.A. bands. The band had a couple of videos as well to promote their shock rock image. The album made it to Number 74 on the US Billboard charts and went gold. The album was produced by Blackie Lawless and Mike Varney. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. This week Tom & Zeus review the 1984-1985 Animalize tour which was in support of their 12th studio album, Animalize. This is SIOL's 9th KISS tour reviewed. This tour followed the Lick It Up tour, which was their first non-makeup tour. Animalize was released on September 17, 1984 and the tour began on September 30, 1984 in England. This was a time when the band members were constantly changing. New guitarist, Mark St. John, who just replaced Vinnie Vincent as the lead guitarist, was having health issues with hand and was replaced by Bruce Kulick. During the tour, Mark ended up playing on only three dates and was eventually replaced by Bruce Kulick permanently. The stage was basic for KISS with animal print. The costumes were similar to the Lick It Up costumes but with animal print and Gene's wig! The setlist featured 6 of the 9 songs from Animalize at one point on the tour. The albums, Creatures Of The Night, Lick It Up and Animalize were emphasized. This was a time when KISS ACTUALLY changed the setlist. At least 11 of the songs on the End Of The Road setlist were NOT played during this tour. As usual, the guys breakdown the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour. They then rank the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour against the previous 8 tours reviewed so far. On the 56th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, author James Campion, review the 1977 legendary album by Rod Stewart, "Foot Loose & Fancy Free." "Foot Loose & Fancy Free" was Rod Stewart's eighth studio album. It continued Rod's 70's solo artist success. Rod's legendary vocals were in prime condition and he had tremendous band behind him. He had three guitarists, Gary Grainger, Jim Cregan and Billy Peek. His bassist was renowned session player Phil Chen. The keyboard player was Jon Barlow Jarvis and on the drums was the legendary Carmine Appice. This band could match up with any other band in the 1970's. The album featured three huge hits that have been in rotation on rock radio since the album was released, including "Hot Legs," "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)" and "I Was Only Joking." Those three songs even had videos which were starting to become fashionable. The album also includes typical Rod Stewart ballads, some funk, some psychedelic rock, prog rock and more. The album made it to Number 2 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 3X platinum. The album was produced by legendary Tom Dowd and was considered the last of his rocking 70's albums. This week Tom & Zeus review the 2005 KISS DVD, "Rock The Nation Live!" KISS' "Rock The Nation Live" DVD came out in 2005 and was a live concert video of two KISS concerts, one in Washington D.C. & the other in Virginia Beach performed on July 24 and July 25, respectively from the Rock The Nation tour. The DVD featured 20 songs and some bonus features and behind the scenes segments and something called KISS Powervision, which allowed you as the viewer to select a different camera angles, each focusing on a different member. The DVD was successful, like most KISS videos and went double platinum. The guys give their favorite 5 songs from the concert and then they rank the video against previously reviewed KISS documentaries/videos. On the 55th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, comedian and podcaster Don Jamieson, review the 1991 legendary album by Metallica, the self-titled album known as the "Black Album." The "Black Album" was Metallica's fifth studio album. It propelled Metallica from a small, but dedicated fan base to superstardom. Led by frontman, main lyricist and rhythm guitarist James Hetfied, polarizing drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist extraordinaire Kirk Hammet and bassist Jason Newsted. The album features five singles including a couple ballads, which were unheard of previously and the now classic, Enter Sandman. Although they did have a video for the previous album's single, "One", Metallica really utilized MTV and the music video format to propel the "Black Album." The album made it to Number 1 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 16X platinum, making it not only Metallica's biggest selling album, but one of the biggest selling album in history. The album was produced by Bob Rock and although it may have been a tumultuous relationship, which was documented, the result cannot be denied. This week Tom & Zeus review the 1983 pivotal album, "Lick It Up" This was KISS' 11th studio album and the 23rd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Lick It Up was the first studio album from KISS without the makeup. Before the release, the band was on MTV and unmasked with MTV VJ the late great J.J. Jackson and premiered the video for Lick It Up. This was the first (and last) credited album with Vinnie Vincent as a member. First not to have Ace Frehley credited as a member. First KISS album without any outside songwriters credited on an album. The album was produced by Michael James Jackson, who had just produced the previous album, Creatures Of The Night and the four original tracks on the compilation Killers. This was a critical point in KISStory. The band taking off the makeup was a big gamble. However, Paul kept thinking the audience was listening to KISS with their eyes and they needed to make this change. Now without the makeup, KISS was competing with their contemporaries on a even playing field. How did they do? Well, the album brought them back to not just gold status, but platinum. The addition of Vinnie Vincent was a difference maker. His guitar playing was great, but the energy he brought with his songwriting was just so evident. He co-wrote 8 of the 10 songs on the album, including the legendary title track, Lick It Up. The guys discuss the album cover, the videos and make a few bold statements about the album and the band with Vinnie Vincent. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. This week Tom & Zeus review the 1994 KISS tribute album, "KISS My Ass Classic KISS Regrooved." To coincide with KISS' 20th Anniversary, the band decided to organize a tribute album featuring today's hottest rock acts. Artists like Lenny Kravitz, Anthrax, Gin Blossoms and more interpreted classic KISS songs. KISS was even able to get the biggest act of the 1990's Garth Brooks to perform "Hard Luck Woman." Some artist were pretty straight forward with their covers, while others took big chances, like Toad The Wet Sprocket on "Rock And Roll All Nite", The Mighty Mighty Bosstones on "Detroit Rock City" and a supergroup made up of Tool, Rage Against The Machine and Faith No More called Shandi's Addiction with their version of "Calling Dr. Love." The guys breakdown the track selection and rank the songs and treat this like a compilation album, so they then rank the compilation album and cover versus the previous reviewed compilation albums. This week Tom & Zeus break down the KISS Destroyer 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Box Set, Disc 4, "Live In Paris" The KISS album Destroyer was released in 1976 and is considered to be one of KISS' most legendary albums. For it's 45th anniversary, Destroyer became the first KISS album to be given the Super Deluxe Box Set treatment. Disc 4 of the Box set is a live album from the Destroyer tour on May 22, 1976 at the L'Olympia in Paris France. This is SIOL's 9th live album review. The guy's breakdown the album, the tracks and of course Paul Stanley's stage banter as well. They list their top 5 favorite tracks and rank the cover and the album against the 8 live albums by KISS that were previously reviewed.
