On the 64th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, rock journalist, author and fellow Pantheon podcaster, Martin Popoff review the 1980 classic album by Rush, "Permanent Waves" As we have stated before, Rush is known for its incredible musicianship with Geddy Lee on vocals and bass, Alex Lifeson on guitar and perhaps the greatest rock drummer of all time, Neil Peart. Permanent Waves finds Rush attempting to become mainstream and commercial. The album was once again produced by the band and Terry Brown. The album cover is another classic Rush cover done by Hugh Syme. The album features more accessible songs and some classic Rush progressive songs as well. The band also experimented with sounds and even some reggae. The album went to #4 US Billboard album charts and went on to become certified platinum. Songs like The Spirit Of Radio and Freewill became concert staples. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. This week Tom & Zeus review the latest Off The Soundboard KISS release, KISS Off The Soundboard San Antonio 1985. This live album was recorded during the Asylum tour which featured a non makeup KISS. This is the 6th Off The Soundboard release by KISS and this one had the longest time delay between the previous Off The Soundboard release and therefore was highly anticipated. Released only on vinyl on KISS' website with controversial merchandise and on CD only in Japan, the album release had issues with the KISS Army. It is the first official live album featuring beloved KISS guitarist, Bruce Kulick. The album does include Asylum album songs, like Tears Are Falling and Uh! All Night, but is also filled with the most 80's Paul Stanley stage banter you can imagine. This is SIOL's 11th live album review. On the 63rd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, the co-host of the Growin' Up Rock Podcast, Steven Michael, review the self-titled 1987 breakthrough album from Whitesnake. Whitesnake was a veteran British blues hard rock band with limited success in the United States. By 1987, David Coverdale wanted to change the band's style and image to a more Americanized version. He started with the music. The album is considered Whitesnake's "hair Metal" phase. The band was always a double guitar band, but this time, guitarist extraordinaire, John Sykes would contribute all the guitars and assist in the lyrics. Long time bassist, Neil Murray was on board as was top notch drummer, Aynsley Dunbar. Finalizing this lineup is Shout It Out Loudcast's favorite, Don Airey. After the music was completed, Coverdale proceeded to fire all the band members and hired an all star lineup to tour and more importantly appear in the MTV videos, including, Vivian Campbell, Adrian Vandenberg, Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldrich. But, more importantly he added his then fiancée, Tawny Kitaen to their videos and the band and the album exploded. Songs like "Here I Go Again" and "Is This Love" made it to Number 1 and 2 on radio respectively. The videos were all over MTV. The album was produced by Mike Stone and Keith Olsen. The album made it to Number 2 on the Billboard Charts and went 8X Platinum. The success of the band is credited to Coverdale's amazing vocals and frontman capabilities and John Sykes legendary melodic guitar work. However, the videos and Tawny Kitaen's impact cannot be overstated. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. On the 62nd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, singer, guitarist and bassist from the Ace Frehley Band, Gene Simmons Band and also Rock City Machine Co, Ryan Spencer Cook, review the 1968 legendary album from Elvis Presley, "NBC TV Special" or better known as the "1968 Comeback Special." By 1968 Elvis had not performed live since 1960. Although, his movie career had been a tremendous success, even making him the highest paid actor in Hollywood, Elvis was not satisfied creatively. His music had been basically soundtracks to his movies and Elvis was frustrated. Since Elvis rocket stardom was born out of his legendary television performance, Elvis and along with young television producer Steve Binder, created a TV Special that would become affectionately known as the 1968 Comeback Special. Ignoring his manager Colonel Tom Parker's insistence that the TV Special be a Christmas theme event, Elvis & Steve Binder created a TV Special that would end up being the highest rated tv show of the year gaining 42% of the television audience. This special brought the KING back! The television special including various types of performances. Elvis performed some of his greatest hits, sometimes alone, sometimes with his original band in an intimate round setting, sometimes in sketches and even with dancers and gospel singers. The songs were varied and styles as well, matching Elvis' versatile appeal. The audience was young and attractive and Elvis wore various outfits, including the leather outfit which has become legendary and synonymous with this performance. Elvis never looked as good or sounded as good as well. The album went to number 8 on US Billboard charts and eventually platinum. There are numerous variations of this album and special releases that include a lot of the songs not featured in the television special. But all versions, include his incredible medley of Trouble / Guitar Man and the medley of his biggest hits like Love Me Tender, Hound Dog, Heartbreak Hotel, All Shook up and more. The album does include his single, If I Can Dream, which may be Elvis' greatest performance of all time. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was obviously Zeus' pick. This week Tom & Zeus review KISS' 2007 "Hit 'n Run Tour" which although small was very unique. This is SIOL's 10th KISS tour reviewed. This tour was only 6 dates. However, it includes one of the most unique KISS concerts of all time, the time played as a trio and without Paul Stanley. KISS was now Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer. This was beginning of KISS as a legacy act. Kiss was doing corporate gigs, casinos and other unique shows. None more so than the show at Soboba Casino in California, where Paul Stanley had a health scare. Due to this the band was forced to play as a trio. On the 61st Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, the producer of Ace Frehley's "10,000 Volts" and founder, guitarist and songwriter of Trixter, and a former Def Leppard touring member, Steve Brown review the 1981 breakthrough album from Def Leppard, "High 'n' Dry." High 'n' Dry was Def Leppard's second studio album. This was the band's first collaboration with legendary producer, Robert John "Mutt" Lange. They would form a partnership like no other and dominate the hard rock scene. High 'n' Dry was Def Leppard at its hungriest. Led by the underrated lead singer, Joe Elliott, two guitar attack from Steve Clark and Pete Willis (this would be his last full time album), and rhythm section of Rick Savage on bass and Rick Allen on drums. The band broke through in American with their melodic rock songs and videos, which were all over early MTV. The album went to number 38 on US Billboard charts and eventually double platinum. Led by songs like Let It Go and High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night) and their breakthrough hit Bringin' On The Heartbreak, Def Leppard was heading for superstardom. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This week Tom & Zeus open Shout It Out Loudcast's Season 7 by reviewing the 1977 legendary live album, KISS Alive II! KISS was perhaps at highest peak in 1977, commercially and musically. They decided to follow the same formula as they did previously. So after Alive, they released three more studio album and now they wanted to release their second live album, KISS Alive II! This live album would not have any songs from the previous live album, so KISS Alive II would not be an actual real concert. The new songs from Destroyer, Rock And Roll Over & Love Gun would only make up 3 sides, so the band decided to add 5 new tracks to complete the double album. The cover of KISS Alive II is known for the images of the band members, the inserts and perhaps the greatest gatefold in vinyl history. For many in the KISS Army this album was the album that solidified their KISS fandom. Fans are often split between Alive vs Alive II. This is SIOL's 10th live album review. On the 60th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, comic, musician from the Ace Frehley Tribute Band, "Ack!" and host of the podcast, Another FN Podcast, Izzy Presley, to review the 1987 breakthrough album from The Cult, "Electric." Electric was The Cult's third studio album. The band recorded twelve new tracks for album to be tentatively called Peace. When they brought the album to legendary Hip-Hop producer, Rick Rubin, they decided to re-record the songs with Rub at the helm. What they came up with is a whole new sound for the band. Rubin took advantage of the band's talent and created a sound which would become their signature. The band went from goth rock to hard rock. A stripped down ACDC type of music led by charismatic frontman, Ian Astbury with his unique vocals, blistering guitar riffs by guitarist Billy Duffy and a rhythm section of Jamie Stewart on bass and Les Warner killing it on drums. The lyrics were written by Astbury & Duffy with the exception of the cover song. The album went to number 38 on US Billboard charts and eventually platinum. Songs like Wild Flower, Lil' Devil and Love Removal Machine have become rock radio staples and this album broke The Cult in the US and onto more mainstream success. Gene and Paul went on Hannity & Colmes to promote their new book, "KISS The Early Years" However, the hosts, especially Sean Hannity, had other things on his mind. The quick TV appearance took a turn into a whole different conversation. The interview was during an interesting time. It was after 9/11 and before the Iraq war and patriotism was definitely in the air. The guys breakdown the appearance in SIOL fashion. On the 59th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, Steve Wright from the Podder Than Hell Podcast, review the 1985 album from Bon Jovi, "7800 Fahrenheit." 7800 Fahrenheit is Bon Jovi's second studio album. The young band continued the same basic formula as their debut album. The band was led by charismatic frontman Jon Bon Jovi who was the primary songwriter. Richie Sambora the guitarist also helped write songs with Jon and you could see the beginnings of this legendary duo. David Bryan on keyboards also helped with a few songs. Alec John Such and Tico Torres rounded out the rhythm section. The album was produced by Lance Quinn. The album continued where their debut left off, with some rockers, mid-tempo songs and a ballad. Jon continued his hard working ways to craft an album in between consecutive non stop tours. 7800 Fahrenheit is a polarizing album often panned by Jon, but loved by the fans, especially songs like, In And Out Of Love & Tokyo Road. The album did go platinum and features 3 MTV Videos. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick.
