S1 Ep 158IN CONVERSATION: Brooke Jowett
EOH HELLO! Happy In Conversation day, listener friend! Today on the show, we’re joined by the sunny Brooke Jowett. If you’re a fan of Survivor Australia, you’ll no doubt be familiar with Brooke, who has now appeared on two separate seasons of the show (the first, which aired in 2016, and the one on your television screens right now!). In this episode, we talk about how Brooke made a name for herself as a fierce competitor on the show so many of us adore, as well as how she feels about dominating headlines lately. Sure, Brooke’s the woman who was blindsided by the country’s next big Bachelor star. But she’s also the woman who’s shown Australia what she’s made of - twice - without a phone, or a wardrobe, or any of the creature comforts that keep you and I sane day-to-day. Thank you so much to Bioré for making this episode of Shameless possible. Check out Bioré’s pore strips here. S1 Ep 156IN CONVERSATION: Jules Von Hep
EHappy Thursday to all our fine-footed friends in the world! Today on the show we are joined by Jules Von Hep, who we also like to refer to as a human ray of sunshine. Jules is a celebrity tanning expert, the founder of tanning juggernaut Isle of Paradise, co-host of the Jules and Sarah podcast and champion of body confidence. We first met Jules last year when we hosted MECCALAND and were immediately drawn to him: he is one of the kindest, warmest, most exuberant humans we have ever had the pleasure of meeting through this job. Yes, Jules is a tanning expert - and has tanned some of the most famous women in the world - but goodness, he is also so much more than that. Jules is a warrior for body confidence, infusing much of his ethos about loving and embracing our bodies on his Instagram feed and in his brand. A quick plot twist before we jump into this chat - Zara wasn’t actually there. She fell ill on the morning we were due to record with Jules and, because he lives in London, it was impossible to re-schedule. So, while she had huge amounts of FOMO listening to this one back, she loved SO much getting the pleasure of enjoying this one as a listener. Mich and Jules cover everything from his battle with an eating disorder as a young man, to tanning celebrities like Kendall Jenner to the birth of his mammoth, internationally stocked beauty brand, Isle of Paradise. For more from Jules, you can find him @julesvonhep and @theisleofparadise. As always, we are @shamelesspodcast. Thank you so much to today’s sponsor DiDi. S1 Ep 141IN CONVERSATION: Clementine Ford
EIt’s our first In Conversation of 2020 and it’s a gooooood one. Today on the show we are joined by the formidable force that is Clementine Ford. Of course, you’re likely to know Clem for her writing on feminism and as the author of Fight Like a Girl and Boys will be Boys. But who is Clem Ford behind the writing and activism we know so well? We sat down with Clem in her Melbourne home to chat all about her work, yes, but what it was like growing up all over the Middle East and how motherhood changed everything. Just setting the scene on this one before we jump in: we recorded this in Clem’s apartment with a train line nearby which may hear very occasionally through the chat, but we think you will love it all the same. Here are some links to buy Clem’s books Fight Like a Girl and Boys will be Boys. A big thank you to today’s sponsor Denada Sugar Free Ice Cream. S1 Ep 139In 2020 #IPledge
EHey friends! Happy New Year! We hope you've enjoyed some much-deserved time out with your loved ones. Today we are re-sharing one of our favourite episodes of 2019 - our In Conversation episode with Natalie Fornasier. We first came across Natalie and her story when she sat down with Byrdie.com.au in 2018 for a piece titled “I’m 24 and Living With Advanced Melanoma—This Is My Story”. Natalie’s words and insights in that interview were what informed our very last segment of Shameless in 2018, and what pushed us to change our own relationship with sun tanning forever. We had Nat as a guest at our Sydney live show in November, and are so lucky to now call her a friend. Nat is now battling stage four melanoma after the cancer spread to her small intestine and bowel. Given today marks a new year and a new decade, we thought now is the time to help Nat champion her message again. So, Team Shameless has enlisted the help of some of Australia's most influential and recognisable women to make a pledge toward sun safety in 2020. You can watch our #IPledge video on our Instagram page @shamelesspodcast at midday today. The Pledge: Did you know melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australian women? It kills more young people in our country than any other form of cancer. So in 2020, I pledge: To wear sunscreen. To get my tan from a can. And to take notice of my skin - and do whatever I can to protect it. I pledge to get my skin checked if I feel like something’s wrong, or if it’s been a while. To never glamourise sun tanning to my followers. And to educate myself and others about the risks. In 2020, I’m going to be safe in the sun. And I encourage you to do the same. To support Call Time On Melanoma, visit www.calltimeonmelanoma.com.au, or follow them on Instagram @calltimeonmelanoma. To follow Nat on Instagram, search @nataliefornasier. S1 Ep 135IN CONVERSATION: Bel Sloane
EHello lovely listeners! Today we have a powerful interview with Bel Sloane. In case you’re not familiar with her name, Bel is a television presenter for Channel 7. She’s also the wife of AFL star and captain of the Adelaide Crows, Rory Sloane. In 2018, Bel and Rory lost their first child Leo, who was born sleeping. In this interview, we talk about that grief, but also the love that Leo brought to both of their lives. We also talk about what it was like to fall pregnant again with their little boy, Sonny, and the mechanics of keeping that entire pregnancy secret from the outside world. While we sat with Bel in her Adelaide home, there was a great, big Christmas tree right beside us. On the Christmas tree were a collection of baubles that read the names of their little family - Mum, Dad, Sonny and Leo - the little warrior who will never be forgotten, and whose passing ignited a legacy that will help Australian parents for years to come. Thanks to our sponsor Hey Tiger for making this episode of Shameless episode possible. Use our code SHAMELESSHOLIDAY at checkout to receive a free full-size bar of chocolate, worth $15. You can follow Bel on Instagram @bel_sloane. If you enjoyed this episode, we also recommend you listen to our chat with Leigh Campbell, which you can find here. Today, she is the co-founder of fitness app Keep it Cleaner, sunglass company Soda Shades and bikini brand Midnight. She’s the face of Bondi Sands, an ambassador for Adidas and the co-author of a book, too. And, yes, she’s still only 25. S1 Ep 131IN CONVERSATION: Emma Carey
EHappy, happy, happy Thursday you wonderful people! Em is known as the girl who fell from the sky: at just 20 years old, when skydiving in Switzerland, her parachute failed to open properly. She plummeted from the sky, landing on the ground completely paralysed from the waist down. She spent months in hospital re-learning how to move her body again. Today, Emma is a walking paraplegic. As she documented her recovery and her re-birth (as she now calls it) Emma built a hugely loyal following thanks to her sunny and warm and thoughtful posts. But often, behind the scenes, things were much harder than she presented them on Instagram. Last week, we sat down with her in Brisbane and asked her all about it. EHappy, happy, happy Thursday our favourite listeners! Today on the show, we’re joined by Clare Bowditch, a musician and actress who has now released her memoir, Your Own Kind of Girl, a book that explores the stories we tell ourselves and what happens when we believe them. In this episode we talk about what it’s like to lose a sister, be sent to a diet doctor when you’re still in primary school, and accept yourself when the world tells you that you shouldn’t. A bit of a trigger warning on this one, too: this episode discusses eating disorders in a manner that might be triggering for some listeners. S1 Ep 128OK, Boomer
EHIYA and HAPPY MONDAY LOVELY PEOPLE! Plus, a conversation about celebrity fundraisers in the wake of natural disasters and then, the OK Boomer meme that has infiltrated the internet. This week, Zara recommends you read Catch and Kill by Ronan Farrow, while Mich recommends Three Women by Lisa Taddeo. S1 Ep 127IN CONVERSATION: Erin Brockovich
EHelloooooo, favourite listener friends! Today on the show we have the enigmatic Erin Brockovich. In the year 2000, the award-winning film starring Julia Roberts told the true story of Erin’s involvement in a case against a Californian power company. Ever since, Erin has continued to work in the environmental sphere and has regularly visited Australia as the ambassador for Shine Lawyers. In our chat with Erin, we asked her about her environmental activism, what it’s like coming into such a large sum of money so unexpectedly, and her relationship with the label “feminist icon”. And yes, we talk a bit about Julia Roberts too... If you loved this chat with Erin, you can find more from her at @the_real_erin_brockovich on Instagram. After you follow Erin, may we recommend you also listen to our interview with the marvellous Em Rusciano too? You can feast your ears (eyes? who knows!) on that one right here. EHellooooo! Happy Thursday, lovely Shameless listeners! Today we’re sitting down with Abbie Chatfield - the 24-year-old runner up on this year’s season of The Bachelor. We wouldn’t hop on a plane to Brisbane for just any Bachelor contestant; but we did for Abbie because we think her time in the public eye has been fascinating. Abbie is considered one of the most controversial Bachelor contestants in history for one, curious reason: Abbie likes talking about sex. S1 Ep 112IN CONVERSATION: Brandon Jack
EHaaaaappy Thursday, friends! Please welcome THE FIRST EVER MAN to Shameless In Conversations! How wild. What a niche. For those unfamiliar, Brandon Jack was born with sporting prowess in his blood; Brandon grew up with a father, Garry, who was a star player and coach in the rugby league. His brother Kieren was an AFL premiership player, and for a time was captain of the Sydney Swans. Brandon gave professional sport a crack himself - he played alongside Kieren at Sydney from 2013 to 2017 - before deciding his passion was writing. And feminist writing, at that. Now, Brandon is a columnist for the Sydney Morning Herald, where he writes about locker-room culture, feminism, and violence against women, among other things like current affairs and sport. We hope you enjoy this chat as much as we loved having it. Follow Brandon on Instagram @brandonjackk. Find some of his writing here. Loved this?
