S1 Ep 226IN CONVERSATION: Sophie Delezio

E

Hiiiii lovely people! Today, we bring you the remarkable Sophie Delezio. If Sophie’s name sounds familiar, you were probably first introduced to her story more than 16 years ago, when a car crashed into Sophie’s daycare centre and trapped Sophie underneath. In that incident, she suffered burns to more than 85% of her body, lost both of her feet, a number of fingers, and an ear. A few years later, Sophie’s life was threatened again by a serious car accident, where, after being thrown from her wheelchair, she obtained an acquired brain injury. In the face of so much adversity, Sophie Delezio is a sunshine-y force to be reckoned with. Now, on the cusp of her twenties, Sophie is a fighter who didn’t just survive, but thrived despite everything that life threw at her. In this chat we will retrace the two events that shaped Sophie into the incredible person she is today, and how her parents’ and brother’s love nurtured her in even the darkest of moments. For more from Sophie, follow her on Instagram @soph.delezio. If you liked this episode, we recommend checking out our chat with skydiving accident survivor Em Carey, which you can find here. S1 Ep 225The great birthday party divide

E

Hey there! On today’s show: Is James Corden the next to fall down to cancel culture? Plus, the celebrity baby boom, David Beckham’s massive Netflix’s deal, and the Kardashian birthday story that split Shameless listeners right down the middle. Is it a bit gross to celebrate your 40th birthday on a private island and post about it on social media, all in the midst of a pandemic? Or, should we just accept that rich people are going to live their very best lives, no matter what the rest of us are doing? This week, Mich recommended Reputation Rehab on ABC iView. For our fellow Melbournians, Zara recommended listening out for the boisterous noises of lively pubs, restaurants, and busy roads. We’ve missed you, sounds! E

Link to this episode in the new The Shameless Book Club feed: https://open.spotify.com/episode/34sAPyThLPFoNb0KrINOit?si=534aa77cd2c74d0a Hiiiiya pals! This month, we’re talking all about Jessie Tu’s debut novel, A Lonely Girl Is A Dangerous Thing. It’s a novel about a young Taiwanese-Australian woman named Jena Lin, who - after being recognised as a prodigy throughout childhood - has re-introduced classical violin back into her life as a 20-something Syndey-sider. We see Jena navigate relationships of all kinds in this book, and how those relationships affect the way she views and treats herself. The novel explores themes like sex, power, desire, and of course, the loneliness Jena can’t quite shake. Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle discuss it all: From whether you need to like a main character to like a book, to those graphic sex scenes and mysterious, unresolved plotlines. Check out the article Jessie Tu wrote for Primer that Zara mentioned in this episode here. Thank you so much to today’s sponsor, Dan Murphy’s and their new Seltzer Range. Head here to find out more. S1 Ep 210IN CONVERSATION: Jennifer Atilemile

E

Happy Thursday lovely people! Today on the show we have the formidable Jennifer Atilemile. Jennifer is an international model and writer who advocates for greater representation of racial and body diversity in the media, and who has very recently landed one of the biggest jobs of her career: A campaign with Victoria’s Secret. In this chat we cover everything from what she loves about the modelling industry, to why she feels every job she books is - in her own words - “a win for not just size diversity, but a win for the increase in racial and body diversity in advertising, too.” Jennifer is candid about the burnout that comes with being an activist in 2020, and how she feels about slacktivism online more than three months after the death of George Floyd made headlines across the world. You can find more from Jennifer on Instagram here, or you can check out her new pod! Just search ‘Here if You Need’ in your favourite pod app. Thank you so much to today’s sponsor, Dan Murphy’s and their new Seltzer range. S1 Ep 204BOOK CLUB: The Yield

E

Link to this episode in the new The Shameless Book Club feed: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1uqMITiWOWN4yR5Uz5ierO?si=043dae8ac94c478b Correction: An earlier edit of this episode said the fictional town of Massacre Plains was based in the Northern Territory of Australia. This is incorrect - the town is based in New South Wales. HELLOOOOO BOOK CLUB PALS! This month, we’re discussing the 2020 Miles Franklin Literary Award winner, The Yield, by Tara June Winch. The novel tells the story of a woman who has returned home after the passing of her Poppy, Albert Gondiwindi, and felt like her life had passed her by ever since her sister, Jedda, vanished as a child. August’s perspective is interspersed with that of Albert, via his almost diary-like Wiradjuri dictionary entries, and a letter from 1915, written by the German reverend Ferdinand Greenleaf, who established a mission in Massacre Plains. Today on the show, Mich, Zara and Annabelle talk about the characters they adored, the scenes most vivid for them, and the importance of the Wiradjuri language. S1 Ep 192IN CONVERSATION: Julia Gillard

E

HI HOW ARE YOU OK ENOUGH CHIT CHAT BECAUSE... Today on the show, we bring you the woman who needs no introduction - but we will attempt to give her one that does her justice - Julia Gillard. Julia was, of course, the first female Prime Minister of Australia, who is now the Chair of Beyond Blue, one of Australia’s leading mental health awareness bodies. Julia is also an avid advocate for addressing women’s under-representation in leadership, which was the motivation behind the book she just co-authored with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, ‘Women and Leadership’. In this chat, Julia touches on the frustration that accompanies being a woman in politics, the moment she found out Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump, as well as her absolutely iconic misogyny speech. If you’d like to hear more from Julia, please do check out her newest book that she co-wrote with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, ‘Women and Leadership’. Order it here! You can also order Julia’s memoir, ‘My Story’, here. For those In Conversation episodes we mentioned at the end of today’s episode, click here for Dylan Alcott and here for Marlee Silva. S1 Ep 183THE ARCHIVES: Mental health

E

A BIG, CAPS LOCK HAPPY THURSDAY TO YOU, SHAMELESS PALS! If you haven’t listened to one of these before, this ‘The Archives’ series ventures deep into our backlog of chats to re-visit some of my (Annabelle's) absolute favourite moments of Shameless interviews. Mich and Zara return from their mid-year break on Monday, so this will be the last bonus episode for a little while. Today, we’re talking about mental health. The fact is, a significant portion of the population will be diagnosed with a mental disorder at some point in their life. Yet still, a lot of us find it difficult to talk about our own struggles. What makes it feel a little less lonely, though? Hearing people in the public sphere so honestly share their own stories; stories many might resonate with in one way or another. Today, we hear from: Georgie Dent, Osher Günsberg, Nawal Sari, Brandon Jack, Matt Okine, Abbie Chatfield, Hugh van Cuylenberg, Rosie Waterland, Mitchell Orval, Ash London, Celia Pacquola, Jules Von Hep, and Tanya Hennessy. S1 Ep 182THE ARCHIVES: Women and the media

E

Good morning to you, my friends! It’s Annabelle here! Mich and Zara are on their mid-year break for a couple more weeks (*wipes away a single, dramatic tear*), which means I’ve got a couple more bonus episodes up my sleeve until their return. If you’re unaware, this ‘The Archives’ series ventures back into our backlog of chats to re-visit some of my absolute favourite moments of Shameless interviews. Today’s theme is… women and the media. We’ve had such a diverse bunch of women join us for our In Conversation episodes since 2018; women who are unapologetically themselves in the otherwise very white, very male-dominated Australian media landscape. What’s it been like navigating it as women with varying cultural backgrounds, differing physical abilities, and life experiences? Today, we hear from: Jamila Rizvi, Brooke Blurton, Priya Serrao, Brooke Boney, Melissa Leong, Marlee Silva, Georgie Stone, Carly Findlay, Jess Quinn, Neroli Meadows, Em Rusciano, Georgia Love, Brooke Jowett, and Clementine Ford. S1 Ep 181THE ARCHIVES: Success

E

BOO! IT’S ANNABELLE! WITH A SURPRISE EPISODE! As you might know already, the girls are on their mid-year break for three weeks, so I’ve put together a few bonus episodes of some of my favourite moments of Shameless interviews, to fill the Mich and Zara shaped hole in my podcast feed. (It was selfish of me, really.) Today’s theme is… success. How do some of Australia’s most accomplished people define it? To them, is success about work or family or something else entirely? We hear from past conversations with activists, influencers, entrepreneurs - you name it. In fact, I’ll name them all below and leave links to find their full Shameless interviews there, too. Today’s lineup: Flex Mami, Courtney Act, Dylan Alcott, Emma Isaacs, Cyan Ta’eed, Zoë Foster Blake, Jess Quinn, Marlee Silva, Lana Wilkinson, Georgie Stone, Jules Von Hep, Rosie Waterland, Matt Okine, Clare Bowditch, Jan Fran, and Emma Carey.
