S1 Ep 19The evolution of Steph Claire Smith
ESteph Claire Smith is well-known for her presence on Instagram, but how has her approach to the platform changed as her following has boomed? We get her onto the show to ask her about the finite details of a social media presence that demands engagement of young girls. PLUS! Sylvia Jeffreys called out Woman's Day this week for posting lies about her relationship, so how in the world do they get away with publishing utter lies? In the wake of Rebel Wilson's case struggling on appeal, we go deep on why tabloids can get away with lying. And, of course, the flammable state of Posh and Becks' marriage: What in the world is going on? You can watch the Media Watch video here on how magazines doctor images, and the piece on Broadly from a woman who once worked in women's magazines. S1 Ep 18Kate Spade and clickbait culture
EHello listener friends! Coming up on today's show: How did the media do in handling the tragic suicide of Kate Spade? The coverage was pretty deplorable if you ask us. Plus, does Miss America dumping the swimsuit section from their competitions mean pageants are feminist? AND we really need to deep dive into the strange underground world of female fitness influencers injecting themselves with steroids. If you would like to skip our segment on Kate Spade and suicide, please pick back up at 35m 15s. Help is always available at Lifeline on 13 11 14. S1 Ep 17Gotta sign that NDA
EDon't mess with celebrities and their clandestine sex lives; such was the message that come through this week, thanks to Love Island. Contestant Natasha not-so-subtly hinted to spending "two nights" with old mate Justin Bieber, but she'll be damned if she tells us much more. So what's the deal with water-tight NDAs around both sex and abuse? Plus, Hugh Grant was married this week in a spectacularly low-key affair, so is he officially Britain's most reluctant celebrity? And of course, the crazy White House world welcoming Kim Kardashian into its throes. Send help. This is too much. As mentioned in the show, you can read all about the scandalous history of celebrity NDAs here, and Hugh Grant's full statement to the Leveson inquiry here. S1 Ep 16Love Island Australia is white. Too white
In case you missed it, 2Day FM radio star Em Rusciano isn't here to be meek and mild. The presenter and comedian has been at the centre of a media storm this week, and we can't help but feel like the entire debacle is a little bit gendered. We also dive into what Love Island Australia will be like (... can we have just a TINY BIT of diversity, please?) and Johnny Depp's career, two years after he was accused of domestic violence against Amber Heard. Read/hear the New York Times' interview with the cast of Arrested Development here. The Sydney Morning Herald's scathing (and questionable) portrayal of Em Rusciano is here. Are you a member of our Shameless Celebrity Gossip Facebook group yet? If not, GET IN THERE. It's like the sisterhood of the travelling pants. Except with no pants. Just great chats. You can find us on Instagram here. Zara keeps telling everyone about that time I was on The Daily Mail for being "extremely intoxicated" and I don't appreciate it. Or, if you are shy/refuse to contribute to Zuckerberg's rise to global domination, email us at [email protected]. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING, YOUR SUPPORT MEANS THE WORLD. We still can't believe how supportive and lovely you have all been. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm going to stop being gushy and embarrassing now. This episode was produced by Michelle Andrews. S1 Ep 15It's a royal wedding extravaganza
EIt’s like Christmas, but better (!!!) with fashion and weddings and grandeur and tabloid drama. Yes, it’s royal wedding week and we’ll be damned if we aren’t spending (almost) the whole show on it. From the Great Markle Debacle to the dress of the century to the aisle walk that demanded more headlines than the wedding itself: We go deep and wide and, well, everywhere. Plus, Kim Kardashian’s sucky (ha) Instagram post that landed her in a boiling pot of hot water. Silly, Kim. You can find the cringe Ryan Seacrest moment here, listen to Wil Anderson’s interview with Em Rusciano here and read the Jezebel piece on Kim Kardashian’s dangerous post here. S1 Ep 13Fact checking a "healing princess"
EIt’s episode 9! Bloody hell, doesn’t time fly? This week we have a little chat on the announcement of Ali Oetjen as Australia’s newest Bachelorette and our… mixed feelings about it. Also, the problematic wellness influencer who says she treated her precancerous cells naturally, and the glittery phenomenon that is dubbed “the party of the year”, the MET gala. UPDATE: After recording this episode we also received a statement from Dr Brad McKay, a family doctor from East Sydney Doctors, about Sarah Stevenson's claims. He told us: "Promoting a healthy lifestyle is admirable, but believing you’ve healed your cervical dysplasia “naturally” is not grounded in reality... "Your immune system is extremely complex and you really don’t have much control over it. It’s narcissistic to believe that you can heal your cervix with positive thoughts and green smoothies... Declaring that you’ve healed your cervix “naturally” is not only ignorant, but it’s also insulting to those people who have been diagnosed with cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer. It implies that if you require treatment you haven’t prayed hard enough, haven’t thought positively enough, or haven’t eaten the right nutritional supplement. Sometimes bad things happen and it’s not helpful or accurate to play a blame game... "I’m glad to hear that her high grade cervical lesion is now a low grade lesion, but it’s dangerous to recommend others follow a “CIN3 routine” based on her anecdotal experience." S1 Ep 11The making of a reality TV villain
HEY. Welcome back! We’re so happy to have you here. We’re going just a liiiiiiittle bit rogue this week and changing things up. Yeeeep, we’re interviewing former Bachelor star Jen Hawke - also known as Australia’s favourite reality TV villain - about the power of the producer. Can a reality TV producer create a villain, we ask her, or do they need something to actually play with in order to craft their character? PLUS, fashion blogger Gary Pepper Girl published the intricate details of her wedding prep on Into The Gloss and wowee do we have some thoughts and feelings to unpack. If you’re interested in checking out some of the articles we pointed to in the show, you can here: Amanda Sherker on the 7 Ways The Beauty Industry Convinced Women That They Weren't Good Enough for The Huffington Post. Jia Tolentino on The Year That Skin Care Became a Coping Mechanism for The New Yorker. Caitlin Fitzsimmons on how much Australians really spend on their weddings for the Sydney Morning Herald. S1 Ep 10Going deep on Khloe Kardashian and 'Third Trimester Tristan'
OH MY GOODNESS. This week we obviously needed to debrief on the Khloe Kardashian/Tristan Thompson cheating saga. We went deeeeeep (and got a little fiery with each other along the way) on how much sympathy should we have for Khloe, and the men like Tristan who just can’t keep it in their pants. Also: we cover the cultural phenomenon that is Coachella, and the musical phenomenon that is Cardi B. Zara referenced a heaaaaap of stuff today that she read about Cardi B this week: You can try the GQ profile here, The Guardian profile here, the Pitchfork piece here on why her number one matters and the Splinter News piece here about Cardi B, Taylor Swift and race relations in Trump's America. S1 Ep 9Celebrity divorce and the great Instagram lie
EWell, it’s been a big week in the world of celebrity divorce after Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum announced their “loving” split to the cries of love being dead. So why is it we feel so viscerally about break-ups like this? Is it because we feel we’ve being sold a lie about what a relationship and a break up looks like? Plus, a radio host’s orgasm story that was a little bit too much to stomach and the atrocity that is Meghan Markle daring to have a grey hair. Zara recommended two pieces from Man Repeller this week, one on love and the beauty of its dullness which you can find here, and another on the concept of a friendship complex which you can find here. If you’re also willing to give Marie Claire a click for that atrocious grey hair article, you can right here. (But don’t tell them we sent you.) And if you haven’t read it, or it’s been a while, check out the history-making Vanity Fair profile of Meghan Markle here. You're so welcome to join the conversation in our Facebook group! S1 Ep 8Georgia Love is tearing the whole thing down
EHELLO! This week we're doing things a little differently - we're interviewing Georgia Love! The journalist and former Bachelorette issued a blistering tweet to a women's tabloid mag this week, so we had a chat with her about it. Also, we need to get to the bottom of why a celebrity BIT BEYONCE ON THE FACE and whether or not it's creepy for Scott Disick to be dating a teenager. S1 Ep 7Oops! Britney did it again. And again
EHOLA! Welcome back. Bachelor in Paradise started this week, so naturally, we took it upon ourselves to debrief all about the show's premiere. Michelle thinks Davey and Flo will be the first to have sex, Zara thinks she's wrong and mostly, we talk a whole lot of crap about a show that's just a whole lot of crap. Loveable crap, that is. We also deep-dive the return of Britney Spears - considering she randomly re-surfaced in our news cycle TWICE this week - and discuss the media's troubling response to a story about Robin Williams and his larrikin antics on the set of Mork & Mindy. Can we call it sexual harassment when it's not, by definition, sexual harassment? Feel free to come and join the conversation in our Facebook group!
