S1 Ep 274IN CONVERSATION: Mari Andrew
EA very happy Monday to you, Shameless frens! Today on the show, we bring you the incredibly warm Mari Andrew. If you don’t recognise Mari’s name, which you likely do anyway, you’ll no doubt know and adore the illustrations she posts on her Instagram account @bymariandrew. In 2015 after her father passed away, Mari began posting a watercoloured illustration a day onto her Instagram page, as a way to express grief, yes, but to also spread light. Now, Mari boasts over one million Instagram followers and is a New York Times best-selling author too, who has published two books, Am I There Yet and My Inner Sky - the latter of which she wrote while recovering from an unexpected illness that left her paralysed for an entire month while living in Spain. In this chat with Mari, we talk about why she’s so unafraid to harness loneliness, her relationship with grief, and how she manages to write deeply private stories for her public audience without unleashing past trauma. For more from Mari, follow her on Instagram at @bymariandrew. And to grab a copy of her book, My Inner Sky, head here. If you enjoyed this interview, we recommend you listen to our In Conversation episode with Zoë Foster Blake here, who Mari has created a lot of book illustrations for. S1 Ep 271IN CONVERSATION: Yumiko Kadota
EGooooood morning, wonderful listeners! Today on the show, we bring you the brave Yumiko Kadota. Yumiko, as you’d read in her new memoir Emotional Female, has been an over-achiever her entire life, studying medicine at university and deciding to enter the perilous surgical stream when specialising as a doctor. Only, it was when Yumiko found herself trying to become a surgeon that she encountered the true, brutal nature of Australia’s hospital culture. Yumiko was subjected to such a ridiculous work schedule, colleagues who were unflinching in their coldness, and institutionalised sexism and racism that she was pushed to a mental breakdown in her late twenties, prompting her to take extended leave from her career and spend time as an inpatient in a psychiatric facility. In this chat, we talk about the highs and the lows of being a female doctor in Australia, as well as what can be done to ensure the next generation of female surgeons aren’t pushed to a place they can’t come back from. ELink to this episode in the new The Shameless Book Club feed: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7DE63ZzOef240bv3X3sJjj?si=1e64f004df3e4948 Halloooooo, fellow book clubbers! This month, we are looking at best-selling author Luanne Rice’s pacey thriller, The Shadow Box. This book jumps before and after the day artist Claire Chase was brutally attacked, to explain just what happened to her. Claire survives before going into hiding and has her suspicions on who her attacker likely was - her admired husband and state attorney, Griffin Chase, who is also running for governor. On the day of Claire’s attack, she was about to launch a shadow box at her art exhibition, inspired by an unforgivable act she was convinced her husband was responsible for years ago. On that same day, one of Claire’s neighbours was also killed. Throughout this novel, as both investigations unfold, we learn exactly how both incidents overlap, and the extent of Griffin Chase’s power over the circle that surrounds him. Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle ask allllll ze questions: Did Rice’s thriller keep us on our toes? What did we love about the book? And finally, were we satisfied with the ending? S1 Ep 263IN CONVERSATION: Grace Tame
EGood morning wonderful Shameless community. Today on the show, we bring you the absolute force that is Grace Tame. When Grace was just 15 years old, she was repeatedly groomed and raped by a 58-year-old maths teacher who taught at her Tasmanian high school. While - after serving his jail sentence - her perpetrator was allowed to speak about his crimes with the media, Grace legally wasn’t: she was prevented by law from sharing her story with the world. So, she decided to do something about it. Together with journalist and activist Nina Funnell, they created the #LetHerSpeak Campaign, which sought to overturn gag laws in Tasmania, the Northern Territory, and, more recently, Victoria. Grace’s voice has been so powerful and so necessary in the space of law reform, that in January, she was named our 2021 Australian of the Year. A content warning before you listen to today’s chat - in this episode we discuss issues regarding grooming, child sexual abuse, eating disorders, self-harm and suicide, and may be triggering for some listeners. For more from Grace, follow her on Instagram @tamepunk. We urge you to check out the work of Bravehearts, a child safety foundation dedicated to preventing child sexual assault and exploitation in Australia. Support them in any way you can via their website, bravehearts.org.au. If you’d like to seek support or advice, Braveheart’s support line is 1800 272 831. S1 Ep 262Even celebs have shitty boyfriends
EHellooooo! Happy Thursday!!!! On today’s show: Taylor Swift blasts Netflix to her 88 million followers, Hilaria and Alec Baldwin’s big baby mystery, the Married at First Sight “hotness ranking” challenge that made the reality show’s “experts” look more like evil masterminds, and life through the eyes of Billie Eilish - how the teen star’s rise to the top has been very different to those who have gone before her. This week, Zara recommended HBO’s documentary miniseries, Allen v. Farrow. If you’re on the hunt for THE BEST JEANS EVER, Mich recommended these beauties from Zara (the store... not... the person). S1 Ep 261IN CONVERSATION: Celeste Barber
EHappy Mondaaaaay everybody! Today on the show, we bring you the remarkable Celeste Barber. We have no doubt you know precisely who Celeste is - she does have 10 million followers across Instagram and Facebook - but we’ll introduce her to you anyway. Celeste began her career as an actress, but over the last six years, has channeled her talent for making people think and laugh into a movement she calls ‘Challenge Accepted’. The premise is simple and brilliant; via her Instagram page, Celeste parodies the content Instagram has become synonymous for - exceedingly thin, obscenely famous women posing in unrealistic and sometimes downright bizarre ways. Celeste’s comedy has made her a local and international sensation: she’s graced the likes of In Style Magazine, penned a best-selling memoir, is the new face of MCoBeauty, and is practically taking over the world, one post at a time. In this chat, we wanted to hear about Celeste’s life before fame, the awkward stages of pursuing a career in the public eye, her relationship with rejection and failure, and what it’s like to build a business off the back of being yourself. For more from Celeste, follow her on Instagram at @celestebarber and check out her podcast, Celeste and Her Best. If you enjoyed this episode, we recommend you listen to our chat with fellow comedian Celia Pacquola. Thank you so much to today’s sponsor, Apple’s new original film, Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, now streaming exclusively on Apple TV+ (terms apply). Head here to subscribe. This month, we read best-selling author Nick Hornby’s eighth novel, Just Like You. The book follows two protagonists, 22-year-old Joseph and 42-year-old Lucy, who fall in love despite coming from two different worlds. Joseph is a young Black DJ trying to find his place in the world, while Lucy is a white English teacher and mum of two, who has recently separated from her addict ex-husband. This isn’t just the story of a juicy love affair though: after all, the book is set in 2016 and Brexit is the backdrop of their union, meaning conversations about politics and race relations are littered throughout. Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle talk about it all: Did Nick Hornby pull off his eighth book? Can a white man write about the experience of a Black man? And, were we pulled towards the romance of Lucy and Joseph? Thank you so much to today’s sponsor, Penguin Books Australia and Emotional Female by Yumiko Kadota. Head here to pick up a copy. EHelloooooo pals! Today on the show, we bring you the brilliant Bridget Malcolm. Bridget is a classically-trained musician, best known as an international model who walked for Victoria’s Secret in their 2015 and 2016 fashion shows, as well as walking for brands like Ralph Lauren and Stella McCartney. But Bridget’s story in the fashion industry isn’t just one of glitzy catwalks and endless travel. Instead, Bridget spent much of her early and prominent years modelling battling a relentless eating disorder which, for two years, saw her live off little more than protein shakes and steamed vegetables. In this chat, we talk about all of it: her lowest moments, her love of music, her complicated relationship with alcohol, her relatively recent diagnosis of Pre Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder, and how she feels about the modelling industry after everything she’s been through. Yes, she may well be known for a certain **wine throwing** incident, but she also left the show with a huge and fiercely loyal group of fans who fell in love with how confident, unapologetic, and yes - if we may use a buzzword to round this list out - authentic she really is. Oh, and they fell in love with her love story too, after Martha and her Married at First Sight husband Michael defied the reality TV odds, still together more than two years after the show aired.
