Episode 079 - Ranking Final Girls: Sidney, Gale, Laurie, Ripley, & Nancy
"Scream" has always been a franchise of final girls. Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers are two of the most consistent, quality characters in any horror franchise of all time. They are legendary for not having one, uninterrupted, consecutive character arc without their storyline ever. Most "Scream" fans assume they are the final girls of all final girls. In today's episode, the Showersheads put the Scream Queens up against the likes of the other top tier final girls in the cinematic landscape: Laurie Strode from "Halloween," Ellen Ripley from "Alien," and Nancy Thompson from "A Nightmare on Elm Street." In addition, each of the Patreon guests highlights one other final girl that stands out as special to their brand of horror. To conclude the episode, Ryan is joined by Michael Schwartz to briefly discuss and review Todd Field's new film "Tar" starring Cate Blanchett. Episode 078 – Sidney in Scream 1
"Not in my movie!" Those are the iconic final words of Sidney Prescott in the original "Scream" film, declaring that she will not let the actions and terror inflicted by her boyfriend will define her life. Over the course of the first chapter in the horror franchise, the audience is introduced a young woman who is trying to make sense of her trauma a year after her mother was murdered. Soon after she is harassed and attacked by a masked killer, Sidney's life is again thrown into upheaval. Join Ryan and podcast contributor Amar Karim to discuss how Sidney grows from a meek teenage girl preyed upon by her boyfriend to a fierce young woman who breaks all the textbook "final girl" rules. In addition, Ryan is joined by Jamie Acorn to introduce the episode and Chris Saint to conclude the episode, both of whom share their Scream stories and participate in the Speed Round. Episode 077 - Halloween H20 & Scream 3 Parallels
"Halloween" has served as the blueprint for "Scream" in many ways. However, the most similar aspect of these two film series rarely gets its due. "Scream 3," which was designed to close out the storyline of original trilogy bares a striking resemblance to "Halloween H20," which in many ways forms the end of a Laurie Strode trilogy after the films in 1978 and 1981. Both films feature a prominent survivor from a previous film killed in the opening scenes. Each of the films end with an epic sense of finality. But more importantly, the character arcs of Sidney Prescott and Laurie Strode each reach their apex through parallel emotional and character beats. Join Ryan and a group of Patreons to discuss the parallels between "Scream 3" and "Halloween H20" for this Halloween special. To conclude the episode, listen to the first "Ryan2" segment with Ryan, Ryan Young and Amar Karim. They discuss the recent events surrounding "Halloween" alum Scot Taylor Compton and Danielle Harris meeting Jamie Lee Curtis at the "Halloween Ends" premiere. Episode 076 - 'Halloween Ends' Review (Spoilers)
It's the end of an era. Last week, "Halloween Ends" was released theatrically and streaming on Peacock. Jamie Lee Curtis's portrayal as the original final girl, Laurie Strode, has come to a close and yet the final entry to David Gordon Green and Blumhouse's new "Halloween" trilogy has been met with polarizing reactions due to daring narrative choices in regards to Michael Myers. Join Ryan for an episode dedicated to "Halloween Ends." Michael Schwartz joins Ryan first for a brief introduction discussing Jamie Lee Curtis and "Halloween" (1978) followed by Ryan reading an essay and review of "Halloween Ends." In this Patreon exclusive episode, Ryan is joined by Adam Price and Jose Olvera to discuss the love-or-hate "Scream" television series that premiered on MTV in 2015 and ran for three seasons. Adam and Jose are both passionate fans of the TV series. This episode aims to give the TV series a fair shake, despite the several controversies that surround the approach the show took, namely dropping Ghostface i n favor of a new mask and ignoring the universe of the film series. Ryan weighs in on the effectiveness of each season, his evolved position on the show over the past decade, and its placement within the larger "Scream" franchise. Episode 073 - "It Came from Closet" & Scream Killers: Amber & Richie
"No one takes the true fan seriously, not really." One of the most refreshing aspects of "Scream" (2022) is the motive of the characters who wore the Ghostface costume and carried out the third murder spree in Woodsboro, California. This episode of SCREAM with Ryan C. Showers dives in deep into the characters of Amber Freeman and Richie Kirsch, and the performances by Mikey Madison and Jack Quaid. Ryan is joined by Patreon member Roy Garza for this discussion about the most recent killers in the "Scream" series. For the first half of this episode, join Ryan as he sits down with Joey Vallese, who wrote the "Screams" opening featured on the premiere episode of the SwRCS Patreon. Joey has edited a queer-horror anthology titled "It Came From the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror" that is available now to purchase online and from major retailers. Episode 071 - 1990s Slasher Nostalgia & Buffy Reboot
SCREAM with Ryan C. Showers has always functioned as a nostalgia machine for the late 1990s and early 2000s. It comes with the territory; the people who love "Scream" and the films that were influenced by the original trilogy have certain passions for this era in horror films that audiences today have for the post-"Get Out" elevated horror films. Joining me for a Patreon episode to analyze this period in time is Steve Testa of the Horror Stans Podcast. Ryan and Steve rate each slasher film from the "Scream" era from 1-10. Additionally, there is a bonus conversation that includes a discussion about a potential Buffy reboot. Ryan weighs the reality of a Buffy reboot with a group of Patreon Buffy super fans. Episode 070 – Interview: Karyn Kusama & Phil Hay, & Sam Carpenter Perspectives
This week, Ryan hosts the Emmy-nominated director of "Yellowjackets," Karyn Kusama, and her husband screenwriter, Phil Hay. The husband-wife filmmaking duo are genre film legends, with their most recent collaborations as "The Invitation" (2015) and "Destroyer" (2018). Slasher fans may be familiar with Kusama's work as a director with "Jennifer's Body" (2009). "Destroyer," starring Nicole Kidman, is one of Ryan's favorite films. In addition, Ryan is joined later on the show by two Patreons, Ryan Young and Joey Noberini. Ryan often puts forth pro-Sam Carpenter sentiments on this podcast. However, because she is a divisive figure, rounding out the debate about the character felt necessary. Ryan Young brings a dissent to Sam Carpenter, while Ryan C. Showers provides a rebuttal. The episode is introduced by Joey Vallese, a recurring guest on the podcast. His upcoming queer-horror book, "It Came from the Closet," features an essay on "Jennifer's Body," which makes Joey well-suited to introduce Kusama and Hay. Episode 069 - Flaws in the Requel Formula & Scream/Halloween Legacy Cast
The "Requel" became synonymous with "Scream" (2022). However, it was Blumhouse that standardized a formula that "Scream" (2022) utilized, something which revived not only the Ghostface series from an eleven-year hiatus but revitalized the horror-slasher genre in general. The formula worked wonderfully in "Halloween" (2018) and "Scream" (2022), but the cracks that began to appear with the release of "Halloween Kills" (2021) are now becoming bigger flaws as we approach the release of "Halloween Ends" (2022). The formula was a great launching pad, but the problems with the scheduling and financial model are even perhaps affecting "Scream 6" with Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox. Join Ryan as he reads aloud an essay he penned about this exact topic, followed by a discussion with a panel of Patreons about the cracks and flaws in the requel formula and legacy cast members. Nancy shares stories from the set, working with Wes Craven in her scene and as a body double for screen tests, and filming the original film in Santa Rosa.
