The lifelong Evertonian explains how he grew up close to Goodison and attended matches regularly from a young age before coming up through the club’s junior ranks and making his senior debut as a 17-year-old under caretaker manager and fellow Scouser Dave Watson in 1997. Ball admits he defied doctor’s orders to play his part in a second ‘Great Escape’ under Howard Kendall the following year but after battling back from injury problems and Walter Smith signing a clutch of other left-backs to be named the club’s player of the year in 2001, he reveals that being told Everton had accepted transfer offers for him that summer when he thought he was on the brink of being offered a new contract with his boyhood team felt like “a dagger in the heart.” Now back watching the Blues from Goodison’s stands as a fan again and offering hard-hitting views as a weekly ECHO columnist, Ball’s candid opinions make for yet another passionate, lively and fascinating discussion. Sean Dyche suffered his heaviest defeat as Everton manager as his side were torn apart 6-0 by a rampant Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge in their first fixture since being handed a new two-point deduction, their second sporting sanction of this season. Everton have been deducted a further two points after the outcome of their second Profit and Sustainability Rules case this season was announced. After Everton handed an initial 10-point deduction in November – the biggest sporting sanction in 135 years of English top flight football at the time – which was later reduced to six points on appeal, the club were charged with a second breach of Premier League PSR in mid-January; which began a 12-week disciplinary process. Everton set out its position in a three-day hearing last month amid what has been a process lacking in clarity or guidelines. The appeal panel for Everton’s first charge said that there had been two “legal errors” in the club’s original verdict but then the independent commission handling Nottingham Forest’s charge only handed them a four-point deduction for a breach 77% larger than Everton’s, acknowledged it could not be sure how even the reduced punishment handed to the Blues had been calculated. With work on Everton’s new stadium scheduled to be completed by the end of the calendar year and the first team set to play their first competitive game by the banks of the Mersey in less than 18 months’ time, progress on the Blues’ future home is continuing at pace. The laying of the pitch should begin next month while more than 30,000 of the total 52,888 seats have already been installed in a process due to be completed this summer. Dubbed ‘The Master of Movement’, the title of an exhibition of his work showcased at The Strand Gallery in London back in 2014, Trevillion has immortalised the likenesses of some of the biggest names in sport over his stunning career that spans over 70 years. With his unrivalled ability to capture elite athletes in action, he’s produced illustrations of the likes of Pele, Bobby Moore, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Sir Ian Botham, Sachin Tendulkar, Andy Murray, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Sugar Ray Robinson and Oscar De La Hoya to name just an illustrious few. It’s his first and most-enduring football idol Dixie Dean who we’re concerned with today though. Paul, who celebrates his 90th birthday on March 11, was transfixed by Dixie ever since he was taken to his first ever game on February 22, 1937, shortly before he turned three, to watch a then Second Division Tottenham Hotspur defeat Everton 4-3 in an FA Cup fifth round replay. Over two decades later, he’d be reunited with the Blues’ most-prolific marksman as he met up with his boyhood hero to produce the legendary centre-forward’s life story for the Liverpool Echo. This incredible series ran in our newspaper for a marathon 21 weeks during the 1960/61 season. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has broken his silence on the decision to charge Everton with a breach of Profit and Sustainability Regulations for the second time in just over a year. On Monday the Toffees were landed with another charge for a breach of PSR and will, along with Nottingham Forest, be referred to an independent commission, a move made at the same time as the club are already appealing against the first decision of the commission to hand the club a 10-point deduction. Should Everton be found guilty by the independent commission then they could suffer a second points deduction in the same season, with the club unhappy that they are being punished twice having already been charged for 75% of the breaches over the three-year period. Everton have been charged with a further breach of spending regulations by the Premier League.The club was today formally notified of new allegations after a review of the accounts for the football financial year that ended last summer. Everton now have a fortnight to respond to the accusations, which are expected to end up before an independent commission that will aim to assess the case before the end of this season. The only thing that could impact that process would be if the club has significant success in its appeal against the 10 point deduction it has already received under the same regulations. The club's focus is on that appeal, believing its findings will directly impact the arguments at the centre of the new case. It is anticipated the appeal will be concluded before the new case is considered. If Everton are ultimately found to have breached profit and sustainability regulations again then the club could face a further points deduction this season, though other sanctions would also be available to the ruling panel.
