Chris Beesley speaks to Alan Irvine – who served Everton in three different capacities – in the latest episode of Goodison Park: My Home. The Glaswegian recalls how his Everton journey started in bizarre circumstances as the manager who convinced him to join the club, Gordon Lee, was sacked while he was in the building with him but explains how the fact that the by now former Blues boss’ glowing endorsement only reinforced his decision to sign for them from Queen’s Park. Irvine was then part of new manager Howard Kendall’s emerging team and played in the first all-Merseyside Wembley final but injuries cost him a place in the side that would lift the FA Cup at the end of that season and he moved on to Crystal Palace. In 2002, he returned to Everton as David Moyes’ assistant and the pair helped revive the Blues fortunes again before he went off to try his hand at management himself although he would later come back for a third spell with the Blues as he headed their academy and at 66, Irvine insists Everton remain the club closest to his heart. Everton’s summer fitness drive has been punctured by injuries. The group, led by US billionaire and Roma owner Dan Friedkin, had entered into an exclusivity agreement with Blues majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri earlier this summer. Everton transfer news as Jarrad Branthwaite has been the subject of another Manchester United bid and move for Jaden Philogene launched Manchester United have launched a new move for Jarrad Branthwaite. The club is understood to have submitted a new bid for the centre back on Monday night. The offer, a package worth up to £50m, was an improvement on the opening bid of £35m plus £8m in add-ons made last month. Yet the ECHO understands it remains short of the club’s valuation of a key player and one of Europe’s hottest defensive prospects. In addition to these reports the Jaden Philogene transfer has taken a new twist after reports suggested Everton have a deal agreed with Hull City. Everton are actively planning on having Jarrad Branthwaite with them next season as Manchester United turn their attentions to Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt. Dutch publication De Telegraaf reports that Manchester United have offered Netherlands international De Light a five-year contract as they continue transfer talks with the Bundesliga giants. The 24-year-old who is in Germany, preparing for Ronald Koeman’s side’s European Championship last 16 clash against Romania (5pm kick-off) in his current home ground in Munich, has become an increasingly viable option for Old Trafford chiefs in recent days and while David Ornstein of the Athletic reported on Saturday that United’s move in independent of their ongoing Branthwaite interest, their own requirements to meet PSR rules would make deals for both prohibitive. An offer from United last month of £35million plus adds for Branthwaite was deemed unacceptable by Everton and rejected out of hand with the Blues maintaining they will not be bullied into selling their most-valuable asset on the cheap with claims of a Goodison Park ‘fire sale’ this summer wide of the mark. Given the £80million fee that United paid for Harry Maguire in 2019, the £75million Chelsea paid for Wesley Fofana in 2022 and the £77million Manchester City paid for Josko Gvardiol in 2023, Everton consider their breakthrough star of last season to be in the same bracket, especially given the premium for both left-footed defenders and homegrown talent. Unless a mega offer comes in for Branthwaite, Everton now expect him to be part of Sean Dyche’s squad for the historic final season at Goodison Park and with the end of the previous football financial year now over, the ECHO understands the Blues do not want to or need to sell the centre-back who celebrated his 22nd birthday last week. The Premier League has reminded Everton as well as the 19 other rival clubs that they will be punished for deceitful playing trading - just days after several clubs conducted a string of deals. Everton are one of several Premier League clubs who have been scrutinised in recent days as they signed England under-20 international Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa for £9m, while academy graduate Lewis Dobbin moved to Villa Park in a similarly-priced deal. As a result of such deals, Everton, Villa and Chelsea have been accused of trying to boost their finances to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules before the end of the financial year on June 30. Now, according to the Telegraph, the Premier League has written to all 20 clubs to remind them that they will be punished for transfer activity that is deemed fraudulent. The report adds the Premier League will be able to request details from clubs on how negotiations took place, to ensure the transactions were conducted in "good faith". If in any case the Premier League decides that a transfer was not conducted at "arm's length", they will be able to impose fair market value rules on a deal to ensure there is no "false inflation" on transfers and commercial deals. As a result, the Premier League can demand a return of a transfer fee, in full or in part, if it is judged that the fee has been inflated and the deal was not conducted in "good faith". Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has entered into a period of exclusivity with US billionaire Dan Friedkin over the sale of the club. Having seen the long-doomed pursuit of a Toffees takeover by Miami-based 777 Partners finally end last month after the struggling firm failed to come up with the funds to complete, AS Roma owner Friedkin was one of a number of interested parties to show their hand. While it is a step closer to a deal for the club, and provides a credible candidate with football experience and considerable resources, people familiar with the matter stressed that it was not a deal that was done and dusted. Friedkin and his team have now started the process of due diligence and will be analysing all aspects of the club’s business to get a full understanding of the financial situation and the risks that they will be undertaking in acquiring the Toffees. Liverpool-born Temple, 85, wrote himself into Everton folklore when he scored the winning goal in the 1966 FA Cup final to complete a sensational 3-2 comeback victory against Sheffield Wednesday. A prolific scorer in schoolboy football, he had to pick of both his local clubs plus some other top sides vying for his signature ahead of him making his top flight debut at Goodison Park against Newcastle United on March 30, 1957. Temple, who made 275 appearances and scored 83 goals for his home city side despite losing over two years of his career to national service duties in Kenya, recalls netting twice for Everton in a 3-3 draw against Manchester United’s ‘Busby Babes’ in the season of the Munich air disaster while also offering some refreshingly candid views on the Blues bosses he played under plus several high-profile team-mates and opponents. Everton great Kevin Campbell passed away over the weekend. The striker, whose legendary spell in the final stages of the 1998-99 campaign helped lift the Blues to safety, was aged 54. News Campbell was battling serious illness had emerged earlier this month, prompting an outpouring of heartfelt messages of support. Kevin Campbell's son Tyrese paid an emotional tribute to his father following the Everton great's death at the age of just 54, which has triggered a wave of tributes from across football. Campbell arrived at Goodison Park on loan from Turkish side Trabzonspor in the spring of 1999 with the club's Premier League status at risk. His run of nine goals in five games led the Blues to safety and paved the way for a permanent move. In total, the former Arsenal and Nottingham Forest star scored 51 goals across 164 appearances for Everton, including a fourth-minute Merseyside derby winner against Liverpool on September 27, 1999. Former Everton co-owner Paul Gregg has spoken to the ECHO's Chris Beesley for a special edition of the Royal Blue podcast to coincide with the release of his autobiography Backstage Without A Pass. The theatre impresario - who sold his entertainment company for the equivalent of £350million in today's money - arrived at Goodison Park in 1999 when he matched Bill Kenwright's £7.5million stake in buying the club from Peter Johnson. Gregg tried to bring about Everton's first attempt to relocate to the Mersey waterfront with ambitious plans for a stadium at King's Dock but ended up having a well-documented fall-out with Kenwright over the failure of the project. During his time with the Blues, he helped strike sponsorship deals with Keijan and Chang while also having disagreements with the chairman over managers Walter Smith and David Moyes. Despite the tumultuous nature of his time at Everton, Gregg still looks back on his time on Merseyside with fondness but also has strong opinions on both the current ownership issues and the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. Everton finished the season with a fifth successive home win as they defeated already-relegated Sheffield United 1-0 at Goodison Park. It wasn't a classic but once again, Sean Dyche's side got the job done thanks to a first half header from Abdoulaye Doucoure. The absence of any figures from 777 Partners was not a surprise but told a story of its own. For so much of this season the US group has had a high-profile presence in the directors box of the club it has been trying to take over for eight months. Figures were in attendance as recently as at Luton Town, the club’s last match before the visit of Sheffield United. But after 10 days that have seen the firm hit with a civil lawsuit centred on $600m fraud allegations and its Australian airline entered into administration, the dreams of those who have repeatedly filled seats in L4 and beyond appear to be in tatters. Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has held face-to-face talks with potential owners 777 Partners in London this week after fresh doubt was cast on the deal being done. In the latest edition of Goodison Park: My Home, Chris Beesley speaks to a true Everton hero, Graham Stuart on the 30th anniversary of the “Great Escape.” On May 7, 1994, Stuart saved Everton Football Club with a stirring two-goal display in their dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Wimbledon to complete a “Great Escape” from relegation on the final day of the Premier League season. With their top flight status on the line, the Blues recovered from going 2-0 down just 20 minutes into the contest against an in-form Wimbledon side as Stuart halved the deficit with one of the biggest-pressure penalties in the history of ‘The Grand Old Lady’ before netting the winner nine minutes from the end to take his side out of the drop zone for the first time all day. Just a year later, Stuart was part of the team that beat Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley to lift the FA Cup – Everton’s last major trophy to date – while these days he is back with his beloved Blues, working as a club ambassador. Although Goodison Park: My Home is a series mostly dedicated to Everton players, we make a change of gear for part 4 as Chris Beesley speaks to Blues super fan Dr David France. Growing up in humble surroundings in Widnes and coming from a family of Evertonians stretching back five generations, the 75-year-old affectionately known as 'Dr Everton' is a retired oil and gas industry executive who sold his 10,000-item collection of Everton memorabilia to the club at a heavily discounted price so it could be kept for posterity while also founding the Everton Former Players’ Foundation to raise money for the physical and pastoral care of ex-professionals who have represented the club. He was also the founder and driving force behind the Gwladys Street Hall of Fame, the EFC Heritage Society, Everton War Memorials and has authored 19 books about Everton with proceeds donated to Merseyside charities. Making transatlantic trips to watch his beloved Blues play having moved to the USA several decades ago, David has watched many of Everton's greatest players over the years while also befriending lots of them through his projects.
