Everton’s threadbare squad set for pre-season amid need for additions
Join Ian Croll, Chris Beesley and Joe Thomas for the Monday edition of the Royal Blue podcast as they look ahead to the start of Everton's pre-season campaign this week. The Blues are set to kick off pre-season with an away trip to League Two side Accrington Stanley. With limited options currently at his disposal, David Moyes will need to blend youth and experience in his first pre-season encounter back at the club. With a number of senior players involved in International action over the summer and not yet back in the fold, this presents a chance for a number of academy players to make their mark. Just how will Everton line up? And is there any cause for concern, given how threadbare the squad is with so much work in the transfer mark still to be done? Everton’s transfer priorities assessed
Everton have made a number of moves already this summer, with two key signings confirmed in Carlos Alcaraz and Thierno Barry, however, it's clear a number of essential areas still need to be filled. Blues boss David Moyes is keen on strengthening the squad with Premier League experience, which includes players who will be able to stabilise the club’s position in the table as well as push on for Europe. With numerous players from across the continent linked, Moyes has made no secret of his intent to create a robust spine, while bringing in quality players in attacking areas. Just where do those key areas lie? And what are Everton’s priorities in the next phase of the window? In today’s Royal Blue podcast, Ian Croll is joined by Gav Buckland to discuss the latest transfer news as well as reports of Jarrad Branthwaite’s release clause and reports that Everton are looking for minority investment in Everton’s Women’s Team. Also on the agenda is John Textor, the American billionaire who had a failed takeover bid of the club and recently appeared on Talksport. Textor reportedly came close to buying the club and recently revealed why the takeover didn’t happen. All that and more on the latest Royal Blue podcast. James Garner - Everton's most divisive player?
Is James Garner Everton’s most divisive footballer? Why does a player who clearly possesses much talent divide opinion among Everton’s fanbase? The midfielder has established himself as an important player under David Moyes with many strings to his bow, however since joining the Blues back in 2022, the former Manchester United man has yet to display his attacking qualities, having played 84 times, scoring only two goals and notching four assists. Compare that to his loan spell at Nottingham Forest in the Championship in the 2021/22 season, he scored four goals and provided 10 assists, which contributed to the East Midlands club’s promotion to the Premier League. While Garner has shown glimpses of what he can offer, he is het to convince many Evertonians he can push on. Everton manager David Moyes will no doubt be hoping for more from him next season. In other news, Everton have moved another step closer to finalising a deal to bring Villarreal forward Thierno Barry to the club. Join Ian Croll and Connor O’Neill as they discuss the latest news coming out of Everton Football Club. Thierno Barry set for Everton medical after £27.5m transfer agreed
Thierno Barry is set to undergo a medical with Everton after the club reached a deal with Villarreal for the forward. The 22-year-old is moving closer to joining David Moyes’ squad after talks between the Blues and the La Liga side reached a conclusion. As previously reported, negotiations had been ongoing for some time. By the middle of last week there was growing hope Barry would become the club’s second signing of the summer. Work still needs to be done for the deal to be completed but a move is now looking increasingly likely, with the clubs having settled on a fee for the France Under-21s international. Everton held extensive discussions with Villarreal last month, leading up to the breakthrough over a fee. Jarrad Branthwaite agrees new long-term Everton contract
Jarrad Branthwaite has committed his long-term future to Everton. The young defender has signed a new five-year contract with the club. The centre-back was the subject of two failed bids from Manchester United last summer and has been attracting interest again early in the summer window. However, the Blues have secured a significant coup in keeping him tied down until 2030. Branthwaite was named as the club's Young Player of the Year for 2024-25, having won the same award and the Player of the Year gong for 2023-24 after an excellent breakthrough season. Fulham offer improved terms to Tete as Everton wait on decision from out of contract four
Everton enter the final week of June with work to do before the real transfer mayhem begins. A decision on their futures is expected in the next week. However, after reports of a verbal agreement Fulham this week sent new improved contract proposals to the right-back. Everton have opened talks with Jarrad Branthwaite about a new contract. Keeping hold of the centre back is a priority for the Blues this summer, with the 22-year-old once again the subject of interest from Premier League rivals. Everton Premier League 25/26 fixtures confirmed
Everton will face Brighton & Hove Albion in their first competitive fixture at their new 52,888-capacity Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, August 23 (3pm). Everton transfer rebuild ramps up with key recruitment figure appointed!
Everton have started their summer recruitment drive with the permanent capture of Carlos Alcaraz after a successful spell on loan. But there remains a lot for David Moyes to do. Little wonder, then, the Blues boss is getting linked with players left, right and centre, whether it be Manchester City pair Jack Grealish and James McAtee, or Villarreal rising star Thierno Barry. But there are also pressing contract situations to sort, most pertinently Idrissa Gueye, who alongside Everton team-mate Iliman Ndiaye, starred as Senegal secured a stunning 3-1 win at the City Ground last night over woeful England, whose decision to rest Jordan Pickford backfired. Everton’s recruitment team has been formally boosted by the appointment of Nick Hammond. The transfer specialist has now started his work as part of the new-look recruitment team at Everton. Join Ian Croll and Connor O’Neill as they discuss the latest transfer news and rumours coming out of the Hill Dickinson Stadium. *Emotional farewell to Goodison Park | 16-page Everton souvenir picture special:* https://shop.regionalnewspapers.co.uk/liverpool-echo-monday-19th-may-2025-4583-p.asp *Goodbye to Goodison special souvenir edition:* https://tinyurl.com/GoodbyeGoodisonSouvenir *25 Best Reach Podcasts*https://podcast.feedspot.com/reach_podcasts/#h5644883 *Gavin Buckland's Book 'The End' | Order your copy here:* https://tinyurl.com/GavinBucklandTheEnd Everton FC podcasts from the Liverpool ECHO’s Royal Blue YouTube channel. KEEP, SELL, RELEASE? Branthwaite, Beto, Calvert-Lewin, Keane, Patterson
Everton are braced for another summer of interest in Jarrad Branthwaite. The centre-back remains on the radar of several Premier League clubs. The Blues rebuffed two bids for the 22-year-old from Manchester United last summer. Neither offer, with the second for a package worth around £50m, came close to meeting the club’s valuation of a player who had enjoyed a stunning breakthrough year. Branthwaite is under contract at Everton until the end of June 2027, having signed a new deal following his emergence into the first team in the opening months of the 2023/24 campaign. Everton, who signed him from Carlisle United in 2020, are in a strong position to rebuff speculative interest as a result. Looking deeper into the squad, a number of Everton players with uncertain futures remain out the club, but for how long? Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Michael Keane will see their contracts run out at the end of June while Nathan Patterson has struggled to impress upon his return from injury. A forward remains a priority for the blues having been rebuffed by Liam Delap, who chose Chelsea. Where does that leave Beto who has turned his Everton career around with a bag full of goals in the second half of the season? Join Ian Croll and Tony Scott for the Wednesday addition of the Royal Blue podcast as they discuss the latest transfer news and rumours and give their thoughts on who they would keep, sell and release. *Emotional farewell to Goodison Park | 16-page Everton souvenir picture special:* https://shop.regionalnewspapers.co.uk/liverpool-echo-monday-19th-may-2025-4583-p.asp *Goodbye to Goodison special souvenir edition:* https://tinyurl.com/GoodbyeGoodisonSouvenir *Gavin Buckland's Book 'The End' | Order your copy here:* https://tinyurl.com/GavinBucklandTheEnd Everton FC podcasts from the Liverpool ECHO’s Royal Blue YouTube channel. Seamus Coleman Exclusive: Evertons’s Best Pound For Pound Signing | Goodison Park: My Home
After starting with Everton’s most-successful skipper Kevin Ratcliffe at the Cheshire Cat pub in Christleton in March 2024, the 20th and final episode of the Goodison Park: My Home series sees Chris Beesley at ‘The Grand Old Lady’ herself, to speak to current club captain Seamus Coleman. Arguably the best pound for pound signing of the Premier League era with his fabled “Sixty Grand” fee that features in a popular supporters’ song, the Republic of Ireland international holds the Blues record for the most matches in the competition and is widely regarded as being their best player in his position of modern times. Lauded by then Everton manager Frank Lampard as “the best man I’ve ever met,” after the 3-2 comeback win over Crystal Palace in 2022 to secure top flight survival, the right-back from Killybegs, County Donegal, has epitomised the ‘Spirit of the Blues’ both on and off the pitch for over 16 years since joining from Sligo Rovers in January 2009 and unlike many of his team-mates, he chooses to live in Liverpool itself. Speaking in his usual, candid manner, Coleman talks passionately to the ECHO about his love for Goodison Park, Everton Football Club and its fanbase. Goodison Park’s future decided as historical ground set to stay
Goodison Park is set to become the home of Everton Women in a move that will retain the club’s presence in its historic home. The men’s team will play its final game at the Grand Old Lady on Sunday, ending 133 years of footballing heritage before the club moves to a new state-of-the art home on the Liverpool waterfront. Thousands of supporters will line the surrounding streets to welcome the players ahead of the game against Southampton and celebrations will continue on the pitch after the final whistle. The game will no longer mark the end of competitive football at the Goodison Road site, however, after the results of a feasibility study conducted by the club paved the way for the women’s team move. Everton stun Fulham as Goodison farewell draws closer
Everton produced a spectacular comeback to defeat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage in glorious sunshine by the Thames after being on the back foot for most of the first 45 minutes. A powerful header from Raul Jimenez on 17 minutes put the hosts in front and they continued to boss proceedings for the lion’s share of the first half before the Blues got back into the contest with a slice of good fortune when Vitalii Mykolenko’s deflected shot deceived Bernd Leno. Everton went ahead on 70 minutes when substitute Dwight McNeil’s corner-kick was headed in at the back post by Michael Keane, who had come into the side as one of four changes, before Beto completed the turnaround three minutes later as his shot proved too hot to handle for Leno. Everton will host a special ‘End of an Era’ celebration after the final whistle of the final game at Goodison Park. Guest presenters, current and former players and live music will all feature as part of the post-match entertainment to mark the historic occasion. Before the match a special coach welcome will be organised to welcome the players. That is set to be organised by the 1878s supporters' group, which held one spectacular final display in the stands ahead of the draw with Ipswich Town last Saturday. Dave Watson Special: Everton’s most-recent trophy-winning captain | Goodison Park: My Home
Dave Watson, Everton’s most-recent trophy-winning captain, is Chris Beesley’s latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. The centre-half was the Blues’ skipper when they defeated Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side 1-0 in the 1995 FA Cup final and recalls an incredible story about what happened to the famous silverware that night after the Wembley victory. Scouser Watson, who grew up on Boundary Street, close to the new Everton Stadium, started his professional career across Stanley Park with Liverpool – for whom his brother Alex later played – but never made a first team appearance before joining Norwich City in 1980. While with the Canaries, he made his England debut, winning his first of 12 caps for the Three Lions, in a 2-0 win over Brazil in the Maracana Stadium before lifting the League Cup the following year. He returned to his home city in 1986 when Howard Kendall snapped him up for Everton for a then club record £900,000 fee and was part of their last League Championship-winning side in his first season at Goodison Park. Now 63, Watson made 528 appearances for the Blues – the third highest in history behind Neville Southall (751) and Brian Labone (534) – and also had a stint as caretaker manager in 1997 following Joe Royle’s exit before having a season in charge of Tranmere Rovers in 2001/02 to serve all three of Merseyside’s professional football clubs. Everton squander two-goal lead in Ipswich collapse
Everton threw away a two goal lead against an already relegated Ipswich Town side to be held to a frustrating 2-2 draw in Goodison Park’s penultimate fixture. With a series of spectacular displays in the stands courtesy of fan group the 1878s, the two sides took to the pitch with a ticker tape welcome and the party atmosphere looked like continuing for the hosts. Beto headed David Moyes’ side ahead on 26 minutes and nine minutes later, Dwight McNeil doubled their lead with a strike that left visiting keeper Alex Palmer rooted to the spot. However, an incredible, swerving drive from Julio Enciso four minutes before the interval handed the Suffolk side a lifeline and they shocked the Blues with a headed back post equaliser from substitute George Hirst 11 minutes from the end to earn a share of the spoils. Everton frustration against Chelsea as lack of quality options remains clear!
Everton’s record-breaking wait for a Premier League win at Stamford Bridge continues as they were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in the west London sunshine. Nicolas Jackson struck the only goal of the contest on 27 minutes when Beto gave up possession cheaply and the Senegal international striker struck a low drive beyond Jordan Pickford. Although the hosts threatened to run riot at that time having dominated the first half, David Moyes’ men, playing their first fixture after their Premier League status had been secured for next season improved as the contest wore on. Abdoulaye Doucoure should have done better with a header just before the break while both Beto and substitute Dwight McNeil were denied in the second half as the visitors searched in vain for an equaliser. Everton vs Bayern Munich | 40 Year Anniversary Special
Chris Beesley is joined by guests Gavin Buckland and David Prentice for a a special edition of the Royal Blue podcast to mark the 40th anniversary of Everton's 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in the European Cup-Winners' Cup semi-final second leg, an occasion widely-regarded as the greatest night in Goodison Park's history. After a goalless first leg in what was then West Germany, Everton, roared on by a passionate home crowd, recovered from a goal down at half-time to power through to what remains their only European final. In what proved to be a legendary team talk, manager Howard Kendall told his players at the interval that "The Gwladys Street would suck the ball into the net," and so it proved with goals from Graeme Sharp and Andy Gray before Trevor Steven's iconic late clincher. Gavin and David, who were both present at Goodison to witness the action, share their memories along with exclusive interviews from Everton players who starred that night: Derek Mountfield, Kevin Sheedy, Kevin Ratcliffe, Peter Reid and Trevor Steven. Trevor Steven Special: Memories of Life at Everton | Goodison Park: My Home
Trevor Steven, the player who scored the goal that produced arguably the loudest roar in the Grand Old Lady’s history, is Chris Beesley’s latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. Steven netted the goal that clinched Everton’s place in the 1985 European Cup-Winners’ Cup final when he sealed the 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in what is widely regarded as Goodison Park’s greatest-ever night. Born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Steven recalls his early football memories, growing up close to England’s border with Scotland, before getting his big break in the professional ranks at Burnley, where he played alongside a previous Goodison Park: My Home guest Martin Dobson. Having been snapped up by fellow North Easterner Howard Kendall for £300,000 in 1983, Steven’s first season on Merseyside finished with him delivering the cross for Andy Gray’s goal to clinch the 2-0 victory over Watford in the FA Cup final. The following season, the midfielder was part of Everton’s most-successful side with a memorable goal at Tottenham Hotspur in the title run-in as well as scoring both in the semi-final second leg and final in Europe. Steven then went on to become top scorer in a second Blues’ League Championship-winning side in 1987 before departing Goodison after the 1989 FA Cup final. Now 61, Steven, who in 1991 commanded the joint-highest fee for a British player at the time when he moved from Rangers to Marseille for £5.5million, also delivers an important message about how through his work with charity Mindflow, he is trying to use football to help improve mental health in the construction industry.
