Ep 121+++ Daily Guinness #020 - Does this REALLY hold the skulls of THE three wise men? (feat. Thomas at Cologne Cathedral, Germany)
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 20 “Does this REALLY hold the skulls of THE three wise men?” (feat. Thomas at Cologne Cathedral, Germany) Sarah and I are in Cologne, Germany! Ever since I heard, years ago, that Cologne Cathedral is said to house the bones of the ACTUAL three wise men that visited Jesus at his birth, I’ve been curious about finding out if this was true. Well… it was really over a year after His birth that they visited. And… “Magi” actually doesn’t translate to “kings” exactly. Turns out, I may have been obsessed with the WRONG question this whole time. Ep 120+++ Daily Guinness #019 - “Does Germany Have A Craft Beer Scene?” (feat. Certified Cicerone Linus)
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 19 “Does Germany Have A Craft Beer Scene?” (feat. Certified Cicerone Linus in Cologne, Germany) Sarah and I are in Cologne, Germany! Our plan was to drink our way through the local specialty, Kölsch, but when we heard that there’s been an emerging craft beer scene, we reached out to a certified cicerone named Linus (@koelschbeertour on instagram) to talk about the hardest part of convincing Germans to open their mind to new things happening in the the beer world. What we thought would be a short hang out, ended up being the forming of a new friendship solidified by our mutual love of beer that lasted late into the night. S1 Ep 119Question 51 // Can A Tattoo In Germany Murder Stereotypes? (feat. Bobbie at Studio 23 Tattoo in Frankfurt Germany)
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY #18 Can A Tattoo In Germany Murder Stereotypes? (feat. Bobbie at Studio 23 Tattoo in Frankfurt Germany) Everyone’s heard the phrase “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” but why the hell is it so hard for us to destroy stereotypes that are ingrained in our perception of the world? Craft beer is for bearded guys with tattoos right? Speaking of tattoos, if you’re going to get one from someone who knows what their talking about, make sure they’re a dude with tattoos covering their arms and neck right? I sat down to get, what ended up being the most bad ass tattoo I’ve ever gotten, from my friend Bobbie (@noizecricket on Instagram) in Frankfurt Germany today. The funny thing is, if you ran into her on the street, you’d never guess she packs a punch and could through some massive ink-pain your way. Turns out she’s alot like this this city I love, Frankfurt. Feel free to visit it thinking it can fit in a nice box, but be prepared for more complexity than you could have planned for. “Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 17 Is Aphelwein In Frankfurt A Magic Cure For Jetlag In Germany? “Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 16 I’ve got three hours before I need to be on an overseas flight... that’s just enough time for a conversation with Parkway Theater’s new owners Eddie Landenberger & Ward Johnson to ask them why they’re going through the trouble of projecting 35mm films in 2019. Ep 115Question 50 // Whatever Happened To That Minneapolis Homeless Encampment? (feat. Patina Park)
Patina Park is the Chair of the Metro Urban Indian Directors and executive director of the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center. Whatever happened to that Minneapolis homeless encampment (or “Tent City” as it became known) before it’s population seemingly disappeared overnight? Is it Indian… Native American… First Nationals… what’s the proper term nowadays? Speaking of modern times, I keep seeing blond girls showing up to music festivals wearing traditional headdresses and bikinis, what’s the Native American society feel about that? This week, Rob sits down with Patina Park over coffee to talk about these thing and much, much more in possibly the most important conversation he’s had yet. Ep 114+++ Daily Guinness #013 - What's The Difference Between Bluegrass And Old Time Music? (feat. Nic Hentges)
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 13 I enjoy bluegrass music but I know NOTHING about it. Fortunately for me, my friend Nic Hentges happens to be the vice president of the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old Time Music Association and is going to be playing a concert not too far from me this evening. I’m willing to sound like an idiot in front of a friend if it means diving deep and learning more about this gorgeous musical genre. Ep 113+++ Daily Guinness #012 - IN PRAXIA - Trying Ian's Clothes Tips From Q49
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY #12 Introducing a new (possibly regular) installment I'm calling "In Praxia" which is latin for "putting into action or practice." As I continue to interview guests on the podcast, I'll be trying out advice they've given or things they recommend and sharing my discoveries with you. In Question 49, Ian Allison talked about the freedom of traveling with limited gear and clothing and washing your laundry in the sink. I went out and bought some of the clothes he like, wore them multiple days in a row, made Sarah smell them each day, and washed like he does... here's what I think... ------------------------------ Call The Official Podcast Hotline: (612) 584-9330 Visit Recording Locations: www.thecuriouspod.com/map Subscribe on iTunes: www.thecuriouspod.com/itunes Subscribe via RSS: www.thecuriouspod.com/rss Like us on Facebook: www.thecuriouspod.com/facebook Follow us on Instagram: www.thecuriouspod.com/instagram Intro Song ("Beachwood") Courtesy Of: Wild Pony: https://www.wildponymusic.com/

Ep 112+++ Daily Guinness #011 - “What does it FEEL like to record an album with a band?” (feat. Ben Rosenbush)
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 11 I met up with singer songwriter Ben Rosenbush in his greenroom before sound-checking at his album release concert with with his band Ben Rosenbush And The Brighton. I didn’t want to have your standard conversation, asking all the standard questions one asks when someone releases an album. What inspired these songs? Why’d you name this album the way you did? Hard pass. I want to know what it felt like. Ep 111+++ Daily Guinness #010 - How Have I Never Heard Of The Minnesota Music Coalition? (feat. Ellen Stanley at Summit Brewery)
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 10 This past week, my curiosity led me to giving a relationship another go. It was a rough breakup, we haven't been on speaking terms, but... I may be willing to give the relationship another chance... Because of this change of heart, it led me to finding out about a Non-Profit here in Minnesota who's main goal is to help musicians have more successful careers. I'm a musician. I live in Minnesota. I want a succesful career... why have I never heard about the Minnesota Music Coalition before? Funny how things work out, I have a feeling this short conversation may lead to a longer one in the future. Thanks Ellen Stanley for taking the time to talk today, Summit Brewery for hosing the event and Adam Levy, Barb Byrnstad and Ken Brahmstedt for the CRUSHING instrumental concert. Ep 110+++ Daily Guinness #009 - Can Legislation Limitations Unlock Cocktail Creativity? (feat. Jack Tillman of Lawless Distillery)
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 9 What's the perfect question to ask when sitting down at a new cocktail bar for the first time? What happens to a cocktail lounge when MN Legislation says you can only serve alcohol you make on the premises... and people show up asking for the classics? I stop by Lawless Distillery to learn more about their "Beach Club" release... but I ended up finding about far more. Ep 106+++ Daily Guinness #005 - Wait, you want to 'Poke' my beer? (feat. Joel Scott of Northbound BrewPub)
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 5 Germany has a winter tradition of brewing a dark-strong beer called an "Eisbock" (pronounced Ice-Bock... yes... Ice is actually involved) But here's the real kicker: Tradition is to heat up an iron rod till it gets red hot and 'poke' your beer by sticking it in for a split second. The reaction is an instant boiling frothy head, a toasty aroma and the rest of the beer stays cold. I've never seen it done in person, so when Sarah found out Joel Scott at Northbound in South Minneapolis was doing it this afternoon... we had to check it out. ------------------------------ Call The Official Podcast Hotline: (612) 584-9330 Visit Recording Locations: www.thecuriouspod.com/map Subscribe on iTunes: www.thecuriouspod.com/itunes Subscribe via RSS: www.thecuriouspod.com/rss Like us on Facebook: www.thecuriouspod.com/facebook Follow us on Instagram: www.thecuriouspod.com/instagram Gregorian Chant Recording Courtesy Of: Darren Curtis
Ep 105Question 49 // Hey, how much underwear did you bring? (feat. Ian Allison)
A couple months ago, my friend Ian Allison posted an Instagram story while on tour with Eric Hutchinson explaining how he decided to fit everything he brought IN ONE FREAKIN BACKPACK! He broke down the bag he used, showing some of the things he brought with him, how he did it, and explained the freedom it brought. The only thing is… I had more questions. Personal questions. Like… let’s talk minimalism travel ideology… Let’s talk the business of underwear and socks. Ep 104+++ Daily Guinness #003 - Why The Hell Do I Need Balance?
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - Jan 3, 2019 Apparently Sarah thinks I can be a... man of extremes. I tend to either be all in or all out and I could use some balance in my life. Ep 100Question 47 // Can I learn to trust the unknown? (feat. Mark Heimermann)
Mark Heimermann is one of the most brilliant song-writers, producers and mentors that I’ve had the honor of getting to work with. Producing, writing and touring with artists like Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Jaci Velazquez and DC Talk, Mark seems to ,seemingly single-handedly, be responsible for creating the soundtrack of my earlier years while growing up in a home that only allowed listening to 'christian’ music. Why would someone at the height of their career and success decide to completely change directions and move away from Nashville? Why does Mark feel like being a ‘Jack-of-all-trades’ in music is beneficial? And, above all else, I’ve struggled so hard to find certainty in life and ‘figure’ this whole music thing out. The unknown future in the creative journey can be daunting and intimidating. What can Mark teach me about learning to trust the unknown? This week, Mark welcomes me into his home studio to down over Oktoberfest beers to answer these questions and more. Question 38 // Can art be quantified? (feat. Peter Himmelman)
Peter Himmelman is a "man of many talents and accomplishments who is known to those who have heard of him, but haven’t heard him, as Bob Dylan’s son-in-law.” That said, Peter first got on Rob’s radar not because of his acclaimed song-writing career or the fact that he was the musical composer on FOX’s American Drama Series: Bones, but as an author. In 2015, when Rob returned home from a dizzying world tour and found himself in a bit of an existential crisis when it came to his career and art, he stumbled on a book called “Let Me Out” written by Peter. Since then, it’s become one the most pivotal and influential books in Rob’s life. Question 33 // What is a SWOT analysis for creatives ? (feat. Jordan Walker)
Jordan Walker is a photographer, entrepreneur, musician, creative thinker, and a close friend of mine. He’s the CEO of Narrate Studios and if you’ve been following the podcast, you’ve seen his work because he took all the press and artwork photos for the podcast. This episode is specifically for anyone who finds themselves thinking that being creative and being intentional seem like binary opposites and wishes they were able to find a way to connect that gap. I sat down with Jordan to ask him about the balance he’s found being a creative person but also an intentional leader in the business side of his compony to see if he has any tactical advice and action steps you can put into place wherever you are in your creative journey. In this convo we talk about: -Capsule Wardrobes -Decision Fatigue (the reason I started wearing all black a couple years ago and still do to this day) -The difference between working “in” a business and “on” your business What a SWOT analysis and Mission Statement are and how creatives can use them to find focus and clarity in what they do Recording Location: Parallel Coffee, Minneapolis, MN For Links, Guest’s Info, and Show Notes VISIT: www.thecuriouspod.com/ Want to leave a message to be played on the podcast? Paul Crilly owns one of my favorite Irish pubs in Minneapolis, Morrissey’s. If you know me, you know I love Ireland and Irish culture. I set out to have a fun conversation about St. Patrick’s Day and ended up having a far deeper convo than I was expecting. What’s it REALLY like to grow up in Northern Ireland during “The Troubles”? Question 30 // What do you call adults who watch My Little Pony? (feat. Kyle Hultquist, Andrew Nelson & Sydney Armstrong)
A year and a half ago, I saw a documentary called “Bronies: The extremely unexpected adult fans of My Little Pony” and ever since I started this podcast, I knew I wanted to sit down someone who considered themselves a Brony. When three of Minnesota’s experts on the topic agreed to indulge my curiosity over some of Minneapolis’ best cider, I thought I was in for a crash course about the fandom. Instead… what I got was a conversation that went way deeper. Community, gender-stereotypes, the internet as a tool (not a substitute) for meaningful social interactions and self-confidence were just a few of the topics we dove into. Leave any stereotype that gallops into your head at the door, pull up a bar stool, pour yourself a cider and listen in... Brett is an electric guitar slinging friend of mine who, every time we play together, at some moment we find ourselves laughing and having a convo that goes deep. In this episode I convince Brett to sneak into a backstage storage closet between sets to record a conversation that ended up being one of my most personal, introspective ones yet. Ever leave hanging out with someone and getting frustrated because you felt like you weren’t fully yourself around them? Did you used to think that one day all your insecurities would just disappear and you would become super confident? Ever have a hard time forgiving your past self? Me too. This one’s for you. Kevin Welch is is the owner and head brewer of Minneapolis’ Boom Island Brewing Company. Sound familiar? I interviewed his wife Qiuxia. (Question 26 // Does Craft Beer Belong To White Men?) As a professional french horn player for the Minnesota Orchestra turned brewery owner, Kevin is passionate about both beer and music, however, the real reason I sat down with him is because of his passion to make both of those worlds as accessible as possible for the world to enjoy. Join me on a snowy winter’s night as I get out of the bitter cold to sit down with Kevin in his glowing warm brewery over one of his freshly brewed Belgian beers. Question 27 // What can a 16yr old do about human trafficking? (feat. Kaiya Woller)
My research for this episode began months ago when I heard a statistic saying that the Super Bowl is one of the single largest events where human trafficking happens in the U.S. each year. With the Super Bowl happening [this year] just a few miles from where Sarah and I live, my original title was going to be “What is Minneapolis doing to fight against human trafficking during Super Bowl LII?” In my research, I stumbled across a website that talked about ‘HT’ as an ongoing problem in Minnesota and their goal of bringing awareness to it by organizing a 5k for the past couple years and an additional “Virtual 5k” right before the Super Bowl. My curiosity was sparked even more when I found out that the organization was started by a 16yr old. I sat down over coffee with Kaiya Woller to learn more about ‘Human Trafficking’, what led her to start this, and what it’s like being a girl growing up living downtown Minneapolis. Question 26 // Does Craft Beer Belong To White Men? (feat. Qiuxia Welch)
Qiuxia Welch, with her husband Kevin, owns Boom Island Brewing Co in Minneapolis, MN. I sat down over beers (her beers in fact) to hear her tell her life story and to find out what it’s been like to be a female minority in multiple industries. From China to America; from being a professional classical musician to owning a brewery, this ended up being an eye-opening conversation that I hope encourages us all to be slower to stereotype the people we meet. Question 25 // How can art impact politics? (feat. André Rodriguez)
There’s a lot of noise out there when it comes to people talking about their political opinions right now, and rightfully so! This has been a crazy year. Unfortunately, half the time (especially when it comes to Facebook and Social Media) it seems like people aren’t trying to have a healthy conversation or debate and more trying to figure out if you agree with them so they can decide to keep you as a friend. Can we have quality interactions with people that disagree with us while still holding to the relationship AND our convictions? Are we steadily isolating ourselves from anyone that disagrees with us? How can art impact politics? And what happens when the most impactful album I’ve heard all year… is a Political EP?? I grabbed coffee with my friend André Rodriguez a month ago to see if he could answer some of my questions. Like the music you heard in this episode? INTERLUDE: A Bucket List Big Enough To Live In
I get asked quite a bit about a story some of you have heard me allude to in parts of these interviews about a life “freak out” I had last year when it came to my career in music. Exactly one year later, I’ve decided to sit down and tell the story about a bucket list made in a Smurf-blue house; The 2 times I turned 30; the secret to my landing a gig flying in private jets and a New Years Day that happened in November. Curious? Trade your glass of Guinness in for a cup of coffee and I’ll fill you in...
Question 23 // Why do we treat life like a game of musical chairs? (feat. Danny Hoyt)
Danny Hoyt (@dannyhoyt) is a writer, producer and network television host for the likes of National Geographic, Fox, CBS, NFL, while still finding time to make it back home to LA each weekend to live host for the LA Chargers. At least, that’s what anyone with an internet connection sees… Anyone that knows Danny personally knows that his passion is far greater than just becoming a famous face on TV. We met back in the day studying at the same University and I’m not sure if I’ve ever met someone as quick witted, comfortable in an circumstance you put him or as magnetic. I had a chance to sit down with Danny while he was in town and our conversation ended up being one that would inspire just about anyone to get off their butt and start making things happen for themselves.
