How Serious Is THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19), And What Actions Should We Take? (feat. Mike “Science Mike” McHargue)
If you’re like me, it’s tough knowing who to listen to when it comes to media coverage on COVID-19, aka “The Coronavirus.” A quick GOOGLE search will simultaneously tell you that it’s no big deal, and also that it’s the end of the world. One look at some of the overreacting people I’ve seen at Target here in Minneapolis and you’d think it was the zombie apocalypse. I NEED UNBIASED INFORMATION GROUNDED IN FACTS and I’m curious: How serious is it, and what actions should we take? Thanks Science Mike for being a source of calm, intelligent, non-emotionally charged, information to help bring some clarity to the situation. Mike’s Website: https://mikemchargue.com/

Irish Storytelling & The Art Of Conversation (feat. Morrissey’s Roy Connaughton)
Whether you’re at a pub, a coffee shop, or in line at the DMV, striking up a conversation with a stranger can be intimidating. That said, I’m convinced it’s one of foundations of living a curious life. You may just have a kind interaction but you never know, you may be sitting across from a future close friend, or in Roy Connaughton’s case, a future friend and your future Irish Pub co-owner. With the convenient distraction of a cell phone in our pocket at all times, we’ve never had an easier excuse to not strike up conversation, but Roy says that it’s not that simple. Growing up in Ireland pre-cellphones and social-media, there’s always been an excuse to not strike up conversation but it you can get over that hurdle… you never know where in the world life will take you! Roy Connaughton is one of the owners of Morrissey’s Irish Pub in Minneapolis, MN and a new friend of mine and I wasn’t expecting how deep this conversation ended up going. This my friends, is why I do this. ALSO! Next week, I’ll be at Morrissey’s hosting their St. Patrick’s Day 2020 celebrations! Come swing out and LET’S CHEERS over a pint of Guinness! Question 74 // How'd you become a chef? (feat. Shane Oporto & Special Guest Laura Lou)
Shane Oporto is best known for his time as executive chef at Octo Fishbar and “Chef de Cuisine” at La Belle Vie. We talk about how, seemingly overnight, Shane went from working behind the scenes as a Chef to being asked to give interviews and being flown all over the world to cook for private events. Wait… that sounds a lot like my first gig with Owl City, being thrown on a private jet with my close friends to open for The Frey. I tell that too but it has me wondering… is there anything else bassists and chefs have in common? Laura Lou joins Shane and I for drinks at DeGidio’s Restaurant & Bar in St. Paul… let’s jump in a booth with some mics to see what happens. Ep 176Question 73 // What’s the official cocktail of New Orleans? (feat. The Sazerac House)
What’s the best way to really taste whisky? How are cocktails and ‘Coffee Houses’ historically connected? Can the way you order a cocktail make you a better traveler? What’s the official cocktail of New Orleans (seriously… it’s the only city in America that’s passed legislation to have an official cocktail!) and how can you make it at home? Join Rob and Sarah as they travel to New Orleans to meet up with their friend Miguel Solorzano, the general manager of The Sazerac House, to answer these questions and more. Lefty: “What’re ya looking for?” Me: “I have no damn clue…” (or “What I ask when looking for a recommendation”)
Sarah and I are smashing beignets at Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter of New Orleans. We just left Euclid, a record store on the East side of town with a stack of vinyl and I’m suddenly struck with a realization… The reason I just had such a killer experience discovering new music is directly related to a conversation I had with my friends Ian and Jorge this last summer about coming up with a better question to ask when asking for a recommendation. Sushi, beer, food, cocktails, music… doesn’t matter. This shit works and I wish I would have known about it years ago! Question 72 // How’d you get into vinyl records? (feat. Down In The Valley’s Scott Farrell & Steven Williams)
Scott Farrell and Steven Williams work for Down In The Valley Record Store in Golden Valley, MN. If you’ve been following along with the podcast, you know that I’ve been falling in love with listening to music on vinyl for the first time in my life, but here’s the drop… I’m still an idiot when it comes to the subject. So, it’s no surprise that, when I met the two of them at a record store pop-up at Boom Island Brewery (and it turned out they were not only more smartest than me but crazy fun to talk too) I knew I had to get together to record a conversation. Does vinyl ACTUALLY sound better? Doest the weight (grams) of an album influence how it sounds? How’d they personally fall in love with vinyl? Join me and the guys in the back of Down In The Valley Record Store as they answer these questions and more. Rob Morgan Is A Curious GUEST (Derek Droogsma Podcast "Catching Up With...")
I’ve had quite a few requests through the podcast hotline and website email asking for us to bring in someone to flip the norm and interview ME on the podcast. While we haven’t quite figured out the right fit for what that would look like, I’ve decided to start sharing some of the other podcast interviews that I’ve been brought in to be a guest on over the past couple years. Derek Droogsma is a musician in the twin cities area who interviewed me this summer for his new podcast “Catching Up With…” Join us as we talk get meta talking about recording podcasts, why I think long form recorded conversation is so important to us, and how finding myself alone and homesick in a hotel suite in Shanghai China changed the way I look at my future career in music. The Complicated Relationship Of Numbers And Art
If you’ve been on social media this past week, you may have noticed artists and musicians sharing screenshots of what Spotify calls their “year-in-review.” (It essentially gives an artist analytics on number of streams of each song or album and where in the world people are listening to their music. I’ve been loving seeing artist friends say thank you to everyone listening to their music and talk about how encouraged they are to see those numbers grow but then I got to thinking… What happens when you look at the numbers… and it’s not what you expected? What happens when less people come out to your show than you were hoping? What happens when less people are reading your new blog than you had expected by now? What happens when you look at the numbers… and are discouraged? I’ve got the morning off in a hotel room, downtown Omaha Nebraska, and I want to share four questions that I ask myself whenever I’m discouraged by the numbers that I believe will help you if you ever find yourself in that situation. https://austinkleon.com/keepgoing/ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-65-the-way-it-works/id956742638?i=1000360493681 podcast hotline: (612) 584-9330 website | map | itunes | instagram | intro song | YouTube

+++ Let’s Cheers! - How To Reach Out To Someone You Admire To “Pick Their Brain Over Coffee”
Have you ever wanted to reach out to someone you respect to get together for advice but didn’t know how to ask? Maybe, you hit someone up already but didn’t get a ‘yes’ or EVEN WORSE… you never got a response. The act of reaching out to people you respect is a catalyst to living a curious life, but nothing makes a person’s eyes roll back in their head far enough to watch their own hair grow from the inside out than a vague, “I’d love to pick your brain…” email. So… how the hell do we even go about it? In today’s “Let’s Cheers” podcast I outline 3 things you should keep in mind when doing this, so grab an americano and join me in the shadow of a cathedral in… Boise Idaho? +++ Let’s Cheers! - Hunting chickens, doing laundry, and the dangers of success at young age. (feat. Dan Rodriguez)
Have I ever told you my theory about how Michael Jackson (and countless other child stars that found success at an early age) were actually emotionally stunted because they didn’t have to do their own laundry? Well... Dan Rodriguez has done my laundry twice this last week, but that’s beside the point… Join Dan and I in the van to talk about why, in a destination orientated culture, we should look at the journey our careers, the parts often considered mundane, with gratitude. http://danrodriguezmusic.com/ podcast hotline: (612) 584-9330 website | map | itunes | instagram | intro song | YouTube

Ep 175+++ Let’s Cheers! - "Astronauts, Austin Texas, And The Other 23 hrs"

What does it mean to put your musical voice ‘on a dial’? What are musicians talking about when they say “It’s all about the song”? And, as artists, are we allowed to recycle our own ideas? +++ Let’s Cheers! - "The Compression Of Comfort"
Episode 1 of my "Let's Cheers!" experiment. LET'S FREAKIN GO! I'm in New Orleans and was reminded of a couple conversations I had yesterday in Nashville that had NOTHING to do with creativity, comfort, and forward motion. A CURIOUS ENDEAVOR [AMSTERDAM!] - “Buds, Beans, and a Bruin Café” Let’s talk about weed in Amsterdam!
In America, any time you tell a friend that you’re headed to Amsterdam, you inevitably get a response involving a knowing smile, a wink, and a friendly elbow to the rips. “Amsterdam eh? Gonna visit a ‘Coffee Shop’ while you’re there? That’s where they sell the MARIJUANA you know right?” Hell yes I’ll be visiting a ‘coffee’ shop! But I want to find out what the locals feel about all of it. I can’t help but to think… I wonder if the Dutch or Germans would exchange their right to smoke weed or drink beer in public (something that could land an American in jail) for our “freedom” to cary guns in public. Would YOU ever be willing to swap? A CURIOUS ENDEAVOR [AMSTERDAM!] - 3 things you should BRING TO GIVE AWAY on your next trip!
It’s a common travel strategy to make sure you leave extra space in your suitcase when packing to save room for purchases and souvenirs you’ll want to bring home. But what if there was something you could BRING TO GIVE AWAY that would ensure the opportunity to have an interaction or connection with someone you’ll never forget? A CURIOUS ENDEAVOR [AMSTERDAM!] - When in doubt, copy someone else.
Musicians - Have you ever found yourself not knowing what to work on or practice next, wishing someone would just tell you the next right direction to focus your energy on? Me too! It’s a good thing! It means you’re in a place of transition and opportunity! Travelers - Have you ever found yourself in a restaurant or bar where the menu is in a different language, no cheesy tourist point and order pictures, and you have no idea what your options are? Me too! It’s a good thing! t means you’re eating at the local haunt! Over the years, I’ve discovered a life cheat code that’s helped me in both music and traveling internationally. Join me in Amsterdam before I catch a train to Delft to find out more.

A CURIOUS ENDEAVOR [AMSTERDAM!] - Can I take a photo while staying in the moment?
Ever feel like you’re constantly having to decide between pulling out your cellphone or camera to take a picture to CAPTURE A MOMENT or leaving it in your pocket so you can be fully present and IN THE MOMENT? Me too. The problem is… for the past year, I’ve been curious if there’s a way we can have BOTH and I’ve discovered a way that makes a MASSIVE difference! (…here’s a hint… it has to do with the reason why the back of my camera is going to look like it does on my instagram post for the next week while Sarah and I are in Europe and I think you should give it a try. Question 70 // How do I get better at acting on my ideas? (feat. Benjamin Kelly)
EBenjamin Kelly is one of the most creative humans I’ve ever met. I originally know him as a CRUSHING bassist who’s bass-lines have left me drooling for years! ...but most people lately seem to know hime for his design brand, Dinosaur Hampton. Possibly one of my most requested guests on the podcast so far, we ended up having an amazing conversation about art, confidence, and shortening the distance between ideas and action. But first... we talk about how I made a complete ass of myself when we first met ten years ago... +++ Monthly Mantra - "That's none of my damn business!"
As artists currently living in a world of instant “feedback” where we’re constantly tempted to check how many streams we’ve gotten on Spotify or likes a post got on social media to see if something we made is connecting with people. In a world where the first question I ALWAYS (and I do mean ALWAYS) get asked about my podcast is how many downloads it gets. We can start to have a misplaced confidence in our understanding what it is we’re creating that is making the most impact on people. The fact of the matter is, you and I are shit at knowing what it is we make that’s going to resonate with other people. We think the numbers encourages us and motivates us to keep creating, but the fact is… it’s a shallow motivation. As soon as the numbers stop reflecting what we imagined they would (and it WILL happen to you) the amount of discouragement that follows is enough for me to see a ton of my friends quit making honest meaningful work. That’s why I think you and I need a need a mantra to repeat to ourselves this month and here it is: “That’s none of my damn business!” podcast hotline: (612) 584-9330 website | map | itunes | instagram | intro song | YouTube

BONUS EP! // Rob Gets Advice From A Pro (feat. David E Jackson)
David Jackson is a professional photographer who’s shot portraits of Butch Vig, Lemmy Kilmister, Garbage, Tommy Stinson, Chase Bryant, Machine Gun Kelly, and Garry Clark Jr… and Rob Morgan ;) just to name a few. Right before I turned off the microphones after last week’s episode (Q68) he sat down for a couple minutes to talk about his role in the pop-up-shop that I stumbled on and ended up giving me some advice that’s applicable for anyone creating something that requires interacting with someone you just met for the first time. Question 68 // How’d You Start Selling Human Skulls? (feat. Scott Watzlawick)
Scott Watzlawick is the owner of an oddities shop in Appleton, Wisconsin called “Forty Three Skulls”. I was in town for a music festival called ‘Mile Of Music’ and was walking around town with Nate Babbs and André Rodriguez (close friends who happen to be curious people and past guests) when we stumbled on FTS’ pop-up-shop. One convo with Scott’s daughter, Kayla, and I knew this wasn’t your ordinary oddities shop. Why does Scott consider himself a teacher and an artist? How’d he get into this buisiness? What does the industry and process of collecting, cleaning and selling bones look like? And what can I learn from Scott and his skulls about the importance of looking past the exterior of people we meet on a daily basis? Jared & Valerie Luhman were both raised on farms in Minnesota and loved that upbringing. Now married, they live on the family farm, Dry Creek Red Angus, where Jared farms with his dad producing organic crops, and raising beef cattle. "Our goal is to farm in a way that leaves the land in better condition than how we received it, to produce high quality and healthy products, and to generate enough income to provide the opportunity for any member of the family to have the opportunity to work on the farm if they desire." What does the future of farming and agriculture look like in Minnesota? How the temptation to use too much “Industry language” make communication harder for all of us no matter what industry we’re in? And what does it mean to be an ‘organic’ farm? Join me as I sit down Jared & Valerie Luhman outside on a hill overlooking their family farm to answer these questions and more. Personally, I know him as one of the most requested guests by our mutual music friends and for his badass bass prowess. How is producing artists like buying a lottery ticket? Question 65 // Hey, Can I Come To Your Sci-Fi Convention? (feat. Jonathan Palmer)
Jonathan Palmer is the president of one of the midwest’s largest sci-fi/fantasy conventions, CONvergence. I’ve never been to a sci-fi/fantasy convention before and when a friend told me it was taking place while I was in town, I knew I had to check it out! I reached out to Jonathan to sit down and learn more about the convention, but what ended up taking place was a conversation that taught me about community, solidarity, identity, and how, if it weren’t for racism, a map of Minneapolis' highways would look entirely different. Join me as I sit down with JP, over Scotch, for a conversation that is… the reason I do this podcast. A Curious Endeavor - “Just Board The Damn Flight.”
I’ve had this flight to Nashville booked for the past two months. It leaves in five hours… and I’m not sure I’m gonna get on it. All of a sudden, I realize what’s holding me back isn’t rational decision making just because I don’t know where I’m going to sleep the next few nights, it’s actually my insecurity about the uncertainty of life and desperate subconscious attempts to force things to work out the way I planned. That’s not the way life works and I need something to help me let go of my need to have it all figured out. I need a curious endeavor. Screw it… I’m boarding the damn flight. podcast hotline: (612) 584-9330 website | map | itunes | instagram | intro song
