A Star Trek Conversation with Mike Poteet - Episode 372

A Star Trek Conversation with Mike Poteet - Episode 372 On September 8, 1966, NBC aired the first episode of a new TV series about a starship on a five year mission of space exploration. That series was called, Star Trek. The first episode told of an endangered shape-shifting, salt-sucking alien posing as a human woman to lure prey to its lair. Over 50 years, nearly 1000 episodes, at least 8 spin-off series, and 13 movies later, we’ve yet to meet any shape shifting salt vampires in real life. We have however seen a surprising number of ideas and technologies that appeared on the shows over the years have come to pass in the real world. We wanted to talk about some of those things as well and social and theological implications of the show. Mike Poteet is a Presbyterian minister (PCUSA), currently serving the larger church as a curriculum writer. He, his wife, and their two children live near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I’ve invited him here today to talk about Star Trek. ----more--------more----Looking for some more music during your time at home? Also Find Rick Lee James Music on Bandcamp: www.RickLeeJames.Bandcamp.comor on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3abA3po ----more---- Become A Patron of this Podcast at the Rick Lee James PATREON PAGE: https://www.patreon.com/RickLeeJames ----more----As Always...Thank You For Listening To Voices In My Head About Your Host: Rick Lee JamesFor more information on Rick Lee James, visit www.rickleejames.com, or follow him on Twitter and Facebook. Kerri Pomarolli Is A Proverbs 32 Woman - Episode 370

Kerri Pomarolli Is A Proverbs 32 Woman - Episode 370 Kerri Pomarolli is a national headlining standup comedian who has worked with everyone from Jay Leno, Jim Carrey, Sherri Shepherd, Carol Channing, and Jerry Lewis. She's been featured on The Tonight Show 29 times, Comedy Central, ABC and more. She is a popular TV host, actor, celebrity correspondent (Showbiz Tonight), currently writing films for the Hallmark Channel, and an “out of the closet” Christian in Hollywood. As a sought-after comedian living in Hollywood, Kerri understands the pressure to keep up impossible standards and present a perfect image. In her book, Confessions of a Proverbs 32 Woman: How I Went from Messed Up to Blessed Up Without Changing a Single Thing (Harvest House Publishers), Kerri turns the notion of perfection on its head and bravely shares the messiness of her life in her trademark witty style. She delves into the struggles of the modern woman tired of trying and failing to live up to Pinterest-looking, air-brushed, and Insta-filtered “real life” role models telling her she’s not quite good enough. Kerri discusses and encourages readers with two things they can hold onto for longer than their smartphone: genuine self-awareness and humble God-awareness. Kevin King & Grace Worship- Episode 367

Kevin King & Grace Worship - Episode 367 Kevin King's Personal Testimony – May Christ Be All Growing up a musician, many churches will quickly throw you up on their stage. Starting to “lead” worship when I was in college, I admittedly had no idea what I was doing, but, like a good performer, I could pretend pretty well. Going to grad school, I began to lead worship at a large budding church and got quickly caught up in the production of the worship event. I inadvertently learned that successful worship meant a successful “experience.” This way of worship leading produced a team of tired musicians and dry hearts. I began attending conferences with the “coolest” artists and found my heart swept up in the temptation to be in the “in crowd” - to be known, noticed, and admired. By what these conferences seemed to preach (or what I ended up hearing) was that if I had the right team, the right lights, the right songs, and enough fervor, we would get there. I didn’t really know where the “there” was, but I knew I should be going there. My heart now pines to tell every 20 something beginning their worship leading career that this well quickly runs dry. When worship leaders look for the “quick fix” or the “answer” to effective worship leading, we have forgotten our true calling: to simply be an arrow that points the hungry heart to the all-satisfying Christ. We are not first production designers, rock stars, artists, or icons. We are under-shepherds under the Great Shepherd. Our game is a long game, and our calling is a slow one. We don’t coerce experiences. We shepherd hearts by the deep well of the Living Word. We lean in to those who criticize us. We love them warts and all. We model the compassion of our God who all day long holds out his hands to an obstinate people (Isaiah 65). What is our greatest resource in Worship Leading? It is the true and better Worship Leader who delights to will and work in us for his good pleasure (Phil 2).As Grace Worship has approached this project, it has been a relief to continually sing and pray “let your grace my pride relieve,” as I learn to trust that Christ’s work is infinitely more effective than my own. It is a cathartic joy to refocus the goal of my heart from performer to worshiper. I will frequently feel the weight of responsibility that whispers to me, “Without you, this would all fall apart.” Oh how deceiving a thought that plays on my need to be needed, while causing me to work myself into the ground. It is the Friend of Sinners, who leads me beside still waters and restores my soul, that reminds me that my greatest joy in life is to be an empty vessel filled with Christ. And so I pray again today that Jesus would mercifully strike down the first Adam within me to make way for the Second. May Christ be all, and I be nothing. Kurtis Parks - Episode 366

Kurtis Parks - Episode 366About Kurtis Parks:Having written over 1,200 songs across several musical genres, Kurtis Parks has been a top 50 American Idol (fourth season) finalist, been featured on the Fox Morning Show, BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel Hour, and had his “Forever Changed” song (written for his beloved Virginia Tech community after the April 2007 tragedy) featured on NBC News and CNN. Sharing the stage with such well-known artists as John Mayer, Howie Day, Sanctus Real, Reliant K, Gungor, Ben Folds and many more, Parks’ worship choruses are also sung around the world in churches every weekend. Producing over 50 albums for various Christian artists nationwide and serving as worship director from 2010 to 2017 at Washington, DC-based National Community Church (NCC), Parks founded Bridges Nashville church in 2018 where he serves as lead pastor. He also released his first book in 2016, Sound Check, a book on authentic worship, as well as his first Kurtis Parks and Friends kids album, Story Songs from Scripture. Speaking, leading worship and preaching at conferences and festivals nationally, He and his wife Sarah are based in Nashville and have two children, Norah and Moses. Worship team members from downtown Nashville, Tennessee-based Bridges Nashville church spent the week of March 23, 2020 recording video and audio from their respective homes for their new single "Jesus You Are" releasing today (Good Friday, April 10) from Venture3Media (V3M). The song is available now at Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and additional digital and streaming outlets globally. A Bridges Nashville: Jesus You Are Deluxe Version is also available as exclusives from Apple Music and iTunes. Following back-to-back hardships faced by the church planted Sept. 2018 by Kurtis Parks in partnership with National Community Church, a multi-site church led by Pastor and NY Times best-selling author Mark Batterson, “Jesus You Are” has been an anthem for the church to sing over the last couple months. “Worship songs can become altar-moments to God’s faithfulness, even in a tough season,” shares Parks, Bridges Nashville’s lead pastor and co-writer of the song with worship leader Delaney Ramsdell. Over the last couple months, the church, which gathers at The Listening Room Café in downtown Nashville, had all of its signage, worship and production equipment stolen followed a week later by a devastating tornado that ripped through the areas of Nashville the church serves. Now dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, Bridges Nashville’s worship team remotely gathered online from their sheltering locations across the US to record the song from their homes. “From Texas to Virginia, and all in between, while social distancing, we were unified in worship,” shares Parks. With Travis Flynn editing the resulting iPhone video and Patrick McDermott and Cordell Bay mixing the audio, Bridges Nashville initially shared the “Jesus You Are” recording on its Facebook page April 3, which was quickly viewed by tens-of-thousands and shared hundreds of times. “We knew that this is a song for right now, for our world and what we are all going through,” says Parks in the song story video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGmQuY2csxw&feature=youtu.be. “The words of the bridge say that Jesus is the Prince of Peace and the Son of Truth. If there are two things our world needs to be reminded of right now, it’s that God is peace in the midst the storm and Jesus is the way, the truth and the life even among confusion and much doubting. I pray that as you listen to this song, it’s an inspiration and hope-filling for you today.” Prince of peace, Son of truthMaker of all things newJesus You are, Jesus You areMore of You, less of meWho is worth everythingJesus You are, Jesus You are (“Jesus You Are” bridge.) Good Friday With WILLIAM WILLIMON's Lectionary Sermon Resource - Episode 364

Good Friday With WILLIAM WILLIMON's Lectionary Sermon Resource - Episode 364Will Willimon served as the Dean of Duke Chapel and Professor of Christian Ministry at Duke University for two decades. He returned to Duke after serving a Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church from 2004 to 2012. Willimon is the author of over 70 books. In early 2018 he released, “Who Lynched Willie Earle?: Confronting Racism Through Preaching”. We had a discussion about that book on this podcast shortly after it released, then last year Dr. Willimon came back on the show to talk about his Memoir Accidental Preacher and again we had a wonderful discussion about his life and ministry. In 2020, he released a powerful sermon resource for ministers who use the Revised Common Lectionary in their preaching and service planning called Will Willimon's Lectionary Sermon Resource. Bonus Episode: Joy Ike - Won't You Be My Neighbor?

Bonus Episode: Joy Ike - Won't You Be My Neighbor? Joy Ike is a Pittsburgh based singer and songwriter whose music, voice, and writing have drawn comparisons to great female musicians like Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, and Regina Spektor. Her polished, precise and graceful music defies easy categorization. A write-up on NPR's All Things Considered says "The depth of subjects she tackles in her poetic lyrics are perfectly complemented by a unique blend of neo-soul, with just the right dash of pop...a truly compelling act to watch in person, with the ability to create an intimate setting in locations big and small."Recently Joy released a brilliant cover song and music video for the Mister Rogers Neighborhood Theme song, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor”. She has stopped by our podcast neighborhood for a visit today and I am just thrilled have her with us. Ryan Clair - Among The Pines - Episode 354

Episode 354: Ryan Clair - Among The Pines Born and raised in a small mountain community in southern California, Ryan Clair was the first born child to a young mom who did all she could to raise a kid amidst trials, heartache and broken relationships. Though she didn't play, music was something Ryan's mother shared with him at an early age. Music has a way to help escape reality and bring a sense of joy and peace in the moments of pain and uncertainty. In his early teens, Ryan Clair picked up his guitar and spent much of his life playing in bands, finding out who he was as a musician.A few years later, a now married Ryan Clair, a father of 5, has reached a place where he feels at home in his life and his music.Ryan writes songs that tell his story, a journey of faith as a follower of Jesus Christ. In 2018 Ryan Clair's 'Less Traveled Road' LP introduced us to his impressive, gritty, southern rock chops with an absolute barn burner of a record. The year 2019 found Ryan adjusting course in more ways than one: he made the westward move to the scenic Pacific Northwest where, inspired by his new surroundings, he penned a starkly minimal sophomore album. This brings us to the present:His newest album,Among the Pines, released on January 24th, 2020. 'Among the Pines' is a musical journey of the soul with Clair positioned as the narrator on a solo trek through the mountains. Intentionally never reaching the sheer rock bigness his previous album had, he instead steers into an alt-country simplicity that flows from song to song.Ryan Clair is here to for visit with us today! Episode 353: Rick Lee James Thunder Radio Special

Episode 353: Rick Lee James Thunder Radio SpecialIn partnership with CRW Radio Promotions, singer, songwriter and worship leader Rick Lee James debuts a brand new radio special. The “Thunder Radio Special” can be heard exclusively on James’ official YouTube channel or his website. It was also recently added to Spotify and Apple Music. Radio stations interested in airing the “Thunder Radio Special” can contact Kathryn Ambrose at CRW Radio Promotions at [email protected] new radio special highlights five songs from James’ critically-acclaimed 13-track album, Thunder, released in February, and features his thoughtful commentary on each selection. “I think part of the reason we often connect so deeply with a song is that the story behind it draws us in and gives us a deeper connection with both the music and the artist,” James reflects. “The powerful thing about the format of a documentary-style radio special like this one is that it allows me to share my heart through both the songs and the stories.”Throughout the half-hour special, James shares the story behind the project’s title track—a previously unreleased song co-written by the late Rich Mullins. In addition, the singer reveals his thoughts surrounding the deeply personal “The Lord Is Our Shepherd,” a song he wrote as a love letter to the multiple children he and his wife have lost to miscarriage. Other selections spotlighted on the radio special include “Whom Have I In Heaven But You (Psalm 73),” “Glory To God The Trinity (Trinity Hymn)” and “Stay.”Just like he creates thought-provoking conversations around the songs he writes and records, James has become a well-known podcaster, sparking dialogue with a variety of well-known artists. He’s recorded well over 300 episodes for his official podcast, “Voices In My Head,” where he’s interviewed leading singer/songwriters, including Andrew Peterson, Sara Groves and Keith Getty, among others. In addition, he recently launched a limited series podcast called “Welcome To The Neighborhood,” in memory of the beloved Fred Rogers. Personally inspired by Mister Rogers and the wisdom he shared over his lifetime, James launched a Twitter account @MisterRogersSay in 2017, where he posts quotes from the iconic children’s television star. The account is currently averaging 1K new followers each week. For James, it’s simply one more way to spread the Gospel message.“I honestly believe that running the Mister Rogers Quotes account @MisterRogersSay has been one of the best ministries of my life,” he shares. “Fred Rogers always reminded us, with his Christlike spirit, that we are people who are dearly loved and that everyone has worth. All these years after he passed away, it’s amazing to see the impact on our lives that his words still have, because they were spoken in truth and love.”The first six episodes of the exclusive “Welcome To The Neighborhood” podcast can be heard HERE.Request the “Thunder Radio Special” at www.crwradiopromotions.com. Bonus Episode: Shea Tuttle Exactly As You Are: The Life and Faith of Mister Rogers

Bonus Episode: Shea Tuttle Exactly As You Are: The Life and Faith of Mister Rogers Fred Rogers fiercely believed that all people deserve love. This conviction wasn’t simply sentimental: it came directly from his Christian faith. God, he insisted, loves us just the way we are. In the book, Exactly as You Are, Shea Tuttle looks at Fred Rogers’s life, the people and places that made him who he was, and his work through Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. She pays particular attention to his faith—because Fred Rogers was a deeply spiritual person, ordained by his church with a one-of-a-kind charge: to minister to children and families through television. Tuttle explores this kind, influential, and sometimes surprising man: the neighborhood he came from, the neighborhood he built, and the kind of neighbor he, by his example, calls all of us to be. Voices In My Head Podcast Episode 343: Grace Anna Sings with Grace Anna and Angela Ray Rodgers

Voices In My Head Podcast Episode 343: Grace Anna Sings with Grace Anna and Angela Ray RodgersWhen she was born, doctors said Grace Anna Rodgers would likely be blind, and that her crushing scoliosis could impair her lung function. She was born with a rare form of dwarfism (Conradi Hunermann Syndrome), which causes spinal curvature, cataracts, poor hearing, and sparse hair. Despite their dire predictions about her ability to hear, Grace has been singing since she was 16 months old. In 2013, she became a YouTube sensation for her rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.” The video has been seen by millions of people around the world.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLdjwpfcC8wNow, at nine years old, Grace Anna hopes people will see her beyond her physical differences and also see her feisty personality, her love for singing, and her contagious happiness for life. Before she could speak, she was singing “Amazing Grace”and hasn’t stopped since (rare for someone with hearing limitations).Despite the countless hospital stays and risky surgeries (even coming close to death), Grace Anna is an example of the power of the human spirit and she reminds us to be grateful for each day.Today on Voices In My Head, my special guests are Grace Anna Rodgers and her mother Angela Ray Rodgers.Get These Books on Amazon As Always...Thank You For Listening About Your Host: Rick Lee JamesOfficial Web Site: www.RickLeeJames.comGet Rick Lee James Latest Album: https://fanlink.to/RLJThunderFor Booking Inquiries Click Hereor contact Gary StriplingBy Phone: 904.745.9151By Email: [email protected] General Office Hours:Monday – 11Am – 5PMTuesday – 11Am – 5PMWednesday – Office closedThursday – 11Am – 5PMFriday – 11AM – 5PMSaturday – 11AM – 5PM This is a public episode.
