Dale Baker - aka - The Maudlin FeeThe Maudlin Fee is the solo project of Dale Baker, an American indie folk singer and drummer currently living in Durham, NC. Formative years were filled with the music of Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton and The Florida Boys. Bluegrass and old time gospel music were also early influences. In college, Baker studied jazz and world music at the University of North Texas. Later he joined Sixpence None the Richer. With them he recorded 5 albums, sold millions of records, toured the world, and was nominated for several awards (including two Grammy’s), culminating in three top ten singles (with the songs Kiss Me, There She Goes, and Breathe Your Name). After a brief stint in the band Over the Rhine, Baker found success as a freelance drummer, performing and recording with Buddy Miller, Chris Stamey, Stephen Kellogg, Thad Cockrell et.al. In 2013 he became one of the core touring members of Big Star’s Third Live (documented in the 2017 DVD release of “Thank You Friends” on Concord Bicycle Music), a concert event celebrating the music of Big Star, featuring a rotating roster of guest performers including members of Wilco, The Posies, REM, Beck, Dawes, Tom Petty, The dB's, Yo La Tengo and the Kronos Quartet. In February 2018, Baker began exclusively debuting his songs via the direct-to-fan distribution platform, Noisetrade. This Week’s Guest - Sherry CothranRev. Sherry Cothran, M.Div., has served as senior pastor in United Methodist congregations in Nashville and Chattanooga, TN, for a decade. Formerly a recording artist on Mercury Records, she is an award-winning singer/songwriter and author of two books. Sherry has released four solo CD’s, her music has been featured in t.v. and film. She’s shared stages with hit rock acts such as Goo Goo Dolls, Bare Naked Ladies, Spin Doctors and K’s Choice and toured around the world as the lead singer of a popular rock band, The Evinrudes, before entering seminary and becoming an ordained, United Methodist minister. As a pastor of a multi-cultural, urban church, Sherry began to share stories on her blog, “Peddling Hope in Dystopia” of everyday sacred encounters with those who were labeled “refugee,” “immigrant” and “homeless.” She later shared them in a book that became beloved by readers, Tending Angels: Stories From the Frontlines of Heaven and Earth. Her writing was featured in publications such as Abingdon Women, Interpreter Magazine and Ministry Matters. She was also a regular contributor to the homiletics journal, Good Preacher. She was the artist in residence in 2015 at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and received two grants to develop her creative writing from the Louisville Institute for Pastoral Study. Her story has been featured in various publications including USA Today. Recently, she became the founder and president of the nonprofit, Beloved Woman, a ministry that helps women who are financially disadvantaged to become self-employed or find a pathway to a living wage. She tours regularly, performing, speaking and leading workshops. In her new book, Wild and Holy Prophets, Warriors, Harlots & Healers: Women of the Bible, Sherry takes us out into the Bible’s uncharted regions, beyond those selected scriptures that have often been used to tame the feminine spirit, to meet the wild and holy women of the Bible. Christians must not only demonstrate that the Christian worldview is true, but that it is also good, beautiful, and relevant. The Good News of the Return of the King: The Gospel in Middle-earth is a book that endeavors to show the truth, goodness, and beauty of Jesus Christ, the gospel, and the biblical metanarrative by engaging the imagination through J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, as well as The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. In this book, Michael T. Jahosky proposes that J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is a story about what Jesus' parables are about: the good news about the return of the king. Shawn Congleton - Never Settled: a memoir of a boy on the road to manhoodShawn D. Congleton has lived a life on the move; moving nearly 80 times before he graduated and living in almost 20 states. Since that time, he has spent most of it in Ohio with his wife, Heidi and three girls, Morgan, Jordan, and Brooklyn. Christy Staats - Midwest Mobilizer for the National Immigration ForumSince April 2020, the number of people apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) near the Southwest border has been rising steadily. In early 2021, these increases have become a touchpoint in the public debate, with growing concerns voiced about the public health and humanitarian ramifications of increasing migrant arrivals. Should we treat the situation at our border as something to stoke our fears, or as Christians should we treat it as a humanitarian crisis, an opportunity to care for least of these, as Jesus has called us to do?My guest today is Christy Staats. Christy has worked with Cru for 15 years, 11 of which were in the UK and is now affiliate staff. She created Crossings in 2015 for her church in Northeast Ohio to encourage Americans to welcome and come alongside newly arrived refugees in partnership with resettlement and community development organizations and led a similar work with Cru nationally. She was invited to join the Bibles, Badges and Business work of the National Immigration Forum in 2018 and has been organizing and speaking with faith, law enforcement and business leaders about the need for immigration reform since. She is nearly finished with her Masters in Theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Parafonic Recordings - Brandon ShattuckBrandon Shattuck is a recording/mixing engineer living in Orlando, FL with his wife Elissa and their two kids. Brandon graduated from Trevecca Nazarene University in 2009 with a degree in music business. From 2009 - 2013 Brandon worked as a freelance recording engineer in Nashville, TN, working in many different recording studios across many different genres. In 2013, he and his wife moved to Orlando where in 2014 Brandon opened his own recording studio, Parafonic Recording Studio. There he worked on projects with a vast array of independent bands and artists until closing the studio in 2019.
