Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) - Episode 535 -Iconoclastic Sex: Christian Sexual Ethics and Human Trafficking Guest: Henry Walter Spaulding IIIChristian sexual ethics operates from a place of privilege when it does not consider those impacted by its moral prescriptions. A large majority of publications on Christian sexual ethics consider choices and images abstracted from lived conditions of the people called to make these decisions. As such, it leaves out many for whom sex is neither welcome nor a choice. As such, these same texts present images of sexual subjects that marginalize those that do not fit. As the book presents, sexuality, both Christian and otherwise, prioritizes a language of purity that strangles the life of those imaged impure. The present book remedies this emphasis through the language of iconoclasm that blasphemes these images and opens theological reflection beyond the boundary of image-based approaches. Utilizing a qualitative study of survivors of trafficking and those who grew up under evangelical purity teachings, Spaulding narrates sexual ethics in light of their testimonies and the theological resources of iconoclasm to articulate a more just and loving sexuality. With eight albums to his credit, Shabaglian has also toured internationally as a music missionary and is the creator of Gracenote, a unique program bringing music and art lessons to under-resourced children in California. Though they have yet to charter an international smash the way Bethel, Hillsong Worship, UNITED, Jesus Culture and Chris Tomlin have, they are getting better with each record. The worship team is part of the Canyon Hills Church in Seattle, Washington, a church founded in 1995 by Steve and Tammi Walker. Now the church has over 3,500 people on a weekend, and more than 190 Life Groups functioning throughout the week."All to Jesus (Live)" is the follow-up to 2022's "Spirit of God." Featuring 9 new live tracks and a studio version of their current radio single "Every Season," the songs center around the theme of surrender. This is most explicitly expressed in the ballad "Surrender." Utilizing the hook from the hymn "I Surrender All," the song is a drawn-out ballad that puts contemporary expressions to the ancient song. "Abide," a song inspired by the words of Jesus in John 14, describes what the posture of surrender looks like. With exquisite and heartfelt vocals, the team's rendition of the pensive ballad "Set Me on Fire" is the emotional hub of the album."On and On," the team's most successful song, has generated over 10M streams and downloads. One listen to it and you know why. The ultra-catchy hook (You're holy, holy, holy are You, God/You're the only One who's holy) will get even the most tune-deaf person singing in no time. Worship leaders will also do well to include the pop-centric "Glory Hallelujah" into their song sets. Though the 80s-esque "Mercy of Jesus" has a singable-melody, the lyrics are forgettable. A greater reliance on scripture will make a track like "Every Season" rise from good to great.Canyon Hills Worship has shown improvement with each album. "All to Jesus (Live)" is easily their career best. With lots of congregationally focused songs, this album will help the church to learn what it means to truly surrender to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure.With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel.Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted."For orthodox Christians, the way forward is to take a close look at our history. Early in my career I taught and counseled at both the high school and college levels, was a chaplain (Middlebury College) and a parish minister, while simultaneously studying the social impact of TV. Realizing that children’s exposure to the world through TV (not a feature of my own upbringing in the 40s and 50s) would dramatically change their social and emotional and informational environments, I pursued all the available research on the subject and shared what I learned by producing workshops and writing articles on the subject for various national publications. As part of my ongoing research into children’s programs, I encountered the then-fledgling production of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” in 1969 and set up a meeting with Fred Rogers to learn more about it and to write an article about his program and work. We spent a weekend together with our families and realized instantly that we were comrades-in-arms. Shortly thereafter he asked me if I would consider joining him as his co-writer and executive head of the company, and I eagerly accepted his invitation. In the early years, I wrote 15-20 of the 65 programs we produced annually, but my management responsibilities for the ancillary non-broadcast products (books, records, educational materials) eventually displaced my time for writing scripts. Production of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” was recessed in the late 1970s after nearly 500 episodes, and I went on to undertake other pursuits. But of course Fred and I remained intimate friends all the rest of our lives and conferred often about matters both the serious and silly.Later, I founded or co-founded several consulting companies. The first of these provided counsel to philanthropists, foundations and major corporations like AT&T to optimize their charitable contributions. Another of my companies developed long-range strategy for health care organizations including Mayo Clinic and Johnson & Johnson. Later, I was a leader in several medical technology companies, from which pursuits I retired to devote myself to full-time writing.I maintain a blog (“The Daley Almanac”) and am the author of Father Feelings (William Morrow and Pocketbooks), Sick and Tired of Being Fat (HarperCollins and Hazelden), numerous articles and Op-Eds and letters to the Editor. I have completed manuscripts for two more books, Taking Your Lumps (a lessons-learned-in-business memoir) and Formerly Called ‘Retirement’ (reflections on the psychological transition to a world beyond the realm of employment). I hold the A.B. and M.A. degrees in the social sciences and education, respectively, from California State University at Fresno and the Th.M. degree in theology from San Francisco Theological Seminary (Presbyterian).
