Thanksgiving in 2020 is going to be different for a lot of us this year. The CDC as been warning against traveling for the Holidays and that’s probably for the best since it would be better to have Thanksgiving on Zoom that Christmas in the ICU. I had a late night of podcasting last night with my new friend Daniel Deitrich, writer of the song, Hymn For The 81%. It was a good conversation and I am still pondering some things this morning that we discussed last night. (You can hear our conversation in about week and a half)Today I woke up for a 5am prayer time, did a 6 mile run , showered and then did my morning devotions from today’s lectionary readings. After that I squeezed in a new episode of Animaniacs with my song while we had breakfast. Now it’s time for a long day of online school with my son and putting the finishing touches on the liturgy for my brother-in-law's wedding this Saturday. This is just one day. For me it has already been a week full with work for church, 3 days of suffering with migraines, and a busy weekend ahead. I’m already feeling a need for some rest…but there is none in sight.It’s clear to me that I need a Sabbath, and I wonder if maybe those of you who are reading this might need one too. The problem is that in the moment when we need it, we don’t always have it. This post is the first of what I plan on being a series of musical Sabbath moments.This song, Morning Hymn ( The Long Night Has Passed), is a song I wrote for just this kind of moment, when we are desperately weary and we need a fresh start. In Christ we can trust that even if it hasn’t happened yet, the long night will pass and the dawn will arise. I hope you can take a few minutes to listen this song, but when you listen, strive to hear from the Holy Spirit. May some word that is heard not be words from Rick, but words from God’s heart to yours. For four minutes and thirty-seven seconds, I hope you can allow the light of Christ to dawn upon you this day. Welcome To The Neighborhood Election Day Special: What Do You Do With The Mad That You Feel? In the United States it's election day and for many of us it's a time of strong feelings and great tension. No matter who wins, there will be many who are filled with great joy and many who are filled with great anger and disappointment. I'm very much concerned about what we do with those strong feelings like joy and anger so I recorded this episode to (hopefully) help us find healthy ways to deal with our anger by using some valuable lyrics from Fred Rogers. Saying No To God with Matthew J. Korpman - Episode 378My guest today on Voices In My Head is Matthew J. Korpman. Matthew is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church who has served as both a student pastor and chaplain within the denomination and has also served as a homilist for various parishes outside the denomination, including the Episcopal church. He holds three Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in Theology, Archaeology, Philosophy, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Screenwriting, all from La Sierra University. In his new book Saying No to God: A Radical Approach to Reading the Bible Faithfully, Matthew makes the case that Blessed are those who defy God. Although bumper stickers abound that propose otherwise, the Bible itself reveals that just because “God says it,” does not, in fact, mean “that settles it.” On the contrary, Korpman contends that a close reading of Scripture reveals that God does not want us to blindly obey him, but rather, invites us to “lock hands” with him and fight. The purpose of this book is to show another way to understand the Bible, one in which readers are not asked to accept what God says, but on the contrary: to say no to it, not because they merely want to, but because the God of the Bible actually requires it.Links for Matthew J. A Jewish Conversation with Rabbi Cary Kozberg (Re-Release) - Episode 375This week's episode of Voices In My Head was recorded live at temple Sholom in Springfield Ohio in 2017. Rabbi Cary Kozberg was gracious enough to sit down for a bit to discuss the things that we share in common as people of faith. It is our belief that in Judaism and Christianity there is a whole lot more that we share in common than what divides us. This is the first of what we hope will be many inter-faith dialogues between the Voices In My Head Podcast and of people of other faith. There is so much in this world that we can learn from each other, no matter how young or how old we are.Bio for Cary KozbergRabbi Cary Kozberg is currently serving as Rabbi of Temple Sholom in Springfield Ohio—the position he first held after his rabbinical ordination in 1977.Rabbi Kozberg served as Director of Religious Life at Wexner Heritage Village, a senior residential care facility in Columbus, Ohio, from 1989 to 2015. A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Texas (Phi Beta Kappa), Rabbi Kozberg received his Masters of Hebrew Letters and Rabbinic Ordination from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati. He served as Rabbi of Temple Sholom from 1977 to 1980, and then as of Beth Israel Congregation in Roanoke, VA from 1980 to 1982. From 1982 to 1987, Rabbi Kozberg was the Hillel Director at the University of Texas in Austin, and then spent two years as a kibbutznik in Israel at Neve Ilan. As Director of Religious Life for Wexner Heritage Village from 1989 to 2015, he developed and broadened religious and spiritual programming for both Jewish and non-Jewish residents, their families and staff, and worked to integrate spiritual values into WHV’s program of providing holistic care to older adults. He is a Board Certified Chaplain, and an active member of the National Association of Jewish chaplains, having received that organization’s “Chaplain of the Year” Award in 2012. Rabbi Kozberg is a Past Chair of the Forum on Religion Spirituality and Aging, a constituent group of the American Society on Aging, and a past editor of FORSA’s quarterly newsletter. A published author and poet, he has presented workshops and seminars around the country, and is a nationally recognized resource on the spiritual, emotional, and psychological challenges that face older adults and their families. His many publications include Honoring Broken Tablets: A Jewish Approach to Dementia (Jewish Lights Publishing), “The Whole World is Full of God’s Glory” in Broken Fragments: Jewish Experiences of Alzheimer’s Disease through Diagnosis, Adaptation, and Moving On, edited by Rabbi Douglas Kohn (URJ Press), and Flourishing In The Later Years: Jewish Pastoral Perspectives on Senior Residential Care, co-edited with Rabbi James Michaels (Mazo Publishing). He has been an Instructor in the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School for Jewish Education in Columbus, and is a Past President of the Columbus Board of Rabbis. Royce Lovett - Episode 373 Royce Lovett has been making music since he was a kid in Tallahassee Florida.Royce’s star has been steadily rising over the years, but his soothing-yet-gritty reggae/rock performances as a contestant on the last season of NBC’s The Voice made him a recognizable face around the nation. While The Voice viewers saw a distinctly reggae side of Royce, his albums are musically quite diverse, mixing rap, hip-hop, rock and reggae with a whole lot of soul.I met Royce in 2018 at UTR Media’s Escape To The Lake Event near Chicago Illinois. I found his performance to be like nothing I had ever seen. His music and his message mesmerized every person in the audience that evening and to say the least, I wasn’t too surprised to see him on a national TV show like The Voice.But it wasn’t just Royce’s voice that left an impression on me, it was his heart and the way that He allowed God to minister through him with the performance he gave. A Star Trek Conversation with Mike Poteet - Episode 372 On September 8, 1966, NBC aired the first episode of a new TV series about a starship on a five year mission of space exploration. That series was called, Star Trek. The first episode told of an endangered shape-shifting, salt-sucking alien posing as a human woman to lure prey to its lair. Over 50 years, nearly 1000 episodes, at least 8 spin-off series, and 13 movies later, we’ve yet to meet any shape shifting salt vampires in real life. We have however seen a surprising number of ideas and technologies that appeared on the shows over the years have come to pass in the real world. We wanted to talk about some of those things as well and social and theological implications of the show. Mike Poteet is a Presbyterian minister (PCUSA), currently serving the larger church as a curriculum writer. He, his wife, and their two children live near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His role as Officer Clemmons on Mister Rogers Neighborhood was groundbreaking, presenting a positive image of an African American at a time when racial tensions were high. The Good Life with Derwin L. Gray - Episode 368Dr. Derwin L. Gray is the founding and lead pastor of Transformation Church, a multiethnic, multigenerational, mission-shaped community in Indian Land, South Carolina, just south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gray met his wife, Vicki, at Brigham Young University (BYU). They have been married since 1992 and have two adult children. After graduating from BYU, he played professional football in the NFL for five years with the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers. In 2008, Gray graduated from Southern Evangelical Seminary magna cum laude with a Master of Divinity, with a concentration in Apologetics. Kevin King & Grace Worship - Episode 367 Kevin King's Personal Testimony – May Christ Be All Growing up a musician, many churches will quickly throw you up on their stage. Starting to “lead” worship when I was in college, I admittedly had no idea what I was doing, but, like a good performer, I could pretend pretty well. Going to grad school, I began to lead worship at a large budding church and got quickly caught up in the production of the worship event. I inadvertently learned that successful worship meant a successful “experience.” This way of worship leading produced a team of tired musicians and dry hearts. I began attending conferences with the “coolest” artists and found my heart swept up in the temptation to be in the “in crowd” - to be known, noticed, and admired. By what these conferences seemed to preach (or what I ended up hearing) was that if I had the right team, the right lights, the right songs, and enough fervor, we would get there. I didn’t really know where the “there” was, but I knew I should be going there. My heart now pines to tell every 20 something beginning their worship leading career that this well quickly runs dry.When worship leaders look for the “quick fix” or the “answer” to effective worship leading, we have forgotten our true calling: to simply be an arrow that points the hungry heart to the all-satisfying Christ. We are not first production designers, rock stars, artists, or icons. We are under-shepherds under the Great Shepherd. Our game is a long game, and our calling is a slow one. We don’t coerce experiences. We shepherd hearts by the deep well of the Living Word. We lean in to those who criticize us. We love them warts and all. We model the compassion of our God who all day long holds out his hands to an obstinate people (Isaiah 65). What is our greatest resource in Worship Leading? It is the true and better Worship Leader who delights to will and work in us for his good pleasure (Phil 2).As Grace Worship has approached this project, it has been a relief to continually sing and pray “let your grace my pride relieve,” as I learn to trust that Christ’s work is infinitely more effective than my own. It is a cathartic joy to refocus the goal of my heart from performer to worshiper. I will frequently feel the weight of responsibility that whispers to me, “Without you, this would all fall apart.” Oh how deceiving a thought that plays on my need to be needed, while causing me to work myself into the ground. It is the Friend of Sinners, who leads me beside still waters and restores my soul, that reminds me that my greatest joy in life is to be an empty vessel filled with Christ. And so I pray again today that Jesus would mercifully strike down the first Adam within me to make way for the Second. May Christ be all, and I be nothing. Kurtis Parks - Episode 366About Kurtis Parks:Having written over 1,200 songs across several musical genres, Kurtis Parks has been a top 50 American Idol (fourth season) finalist, been featured on the Fox Morning Show, BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel Hour, and had his “Forever Changed” song (written for his beloved Virginia Tech community after the April 2007 tragedy) featured on NBC News and CNN. Good Friday With WILLIAM WILLIMON's Lectionary Sermon Resource - Episode 364Will Willimon served as the Dean of Duke Chapel and Professor of Christian Ministry at Duke University for two decades. He returned to Duke after serving a Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church from 2004 to 2012. Willimon is the author of over 70 books. In early 2018 he released, “Who Lynched Willie Earle?: Confronting Racism Through Preaching”.
