Ep 126Deftones
EThis time we're going back to a dark day in metal... 1995. Or at least that's where our story begins, in southern California amidst a scene with the unfortunate moniker of nu-metal. While I still don't understand the success of this sub genre, there was one bright spot in an otherwise, to be frank, shitty scene: The Deftones. They quickly surpassed all their contemporaries in depth, concept and execution and have become an entity completely of their own making. Sit back as we discuss the career of a flower that was born from shit. Executive Producer: Saurav Misra "Engine No 9", Adrenaline (1995) Talkset #1 "Fireal", Adrenaline (1995) "Lotion", Around the Fur (1997) "Dai The Flu", Around the Fur (1997) "Elite", White Pony (2000) Talkset #2 "Passenger", White Pony (2000) "When Girls Telephone Boys", Deftones (2003) "Beware", Saturday Night Wrist (2006) "Kimdracula", Saturday Night Wrist (2006) "Royal", Diamond Eyes (2010) Talkset #3 "Prince", Diamond Eyes (2010) "976-Evil", Diamond Eyes (2010) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 123Dismember: Like an Ever Flowing Stream
EContinuing where we left off last week with Autopsy, Dismember picks up the death/gore torch and elevates it to heights unseen in pure visceral, raw, searing sound. It's safe to say there wouldn't be a Dismember without Autopsy, at least not the band we know today. Dismember adopted some frameworks that Autopsy built, but ended up taking their sound to a level still unmatched. They were the counter to Entombed's low end, filthy guitar tone. They brought the high-gain, "treble" end of the spectrum, which stands to this day as one of the most confrontational and bludgeoning recordings ever laid to tape. This episode we discuss Dismember's Like an Ever Flowing Stream... "Override the Overture", Like an Ever Flowing Stream (1991) Talkset #1 Carnage, "Torn Apart", Dark Recollections (1990) Talkset #2 "Soon to be Dead", Like an Ever Flowing Stream (1991) "Bleed For Me", Like an Ever Flowing Stream (1991) "And so is Life", Like an Ever Flowing Stream (1991) Talkset #3 "Dismembered", Like an Ever Flowing Stream (1991) "Skin Her Alive", Like an Ever Flowing Stream (1991) "Sickening Art", Like an Ever Flowing Stream (1991) Talkset #4 "In Death's Sleep", Like an Ever Flowing Stream (1991) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 122Autopsy: Severed Survival
EOne of the most crucial influences on the Swedish death metal scene of the late 80s, Autopsy pulled in elements of doom, hardcore, rock n roll and death metal to create a sound that was all their own. Being that they were an anomaly in the underground, they didn't get the attention they deserved at the time, but in retrospect, they are one of the most important bands in the genre. Executive Producer: Jeff Wagner "Charred Remains", Severed Survival (1989) Talkset #1 "Service For a Vacant Coffin", Severed Survival (1989) "Disembowel", Severed Survival (1989) "Gasping For Air", Severed Survival (1989) "Ridden with Disease", Severed Survival (1989) Talkset #2 "Pagan Savior", Severed Survival (1989) "Impending Dread", Severed Survival (1989) "Severed Survival", Severed Survival (1989) "Critical Madness", Severed Survival (1989) Talkset #3 "Embalmed", Severed Survival (1989) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 121Monster Magnet
EGetting back to the United States and to some rock n roll with Monster Magnet. An anomaly back in the early 90s, clearly standing out from "Alternative" scene with their psychedelic, drug-infused, bombastic rock n roll. We explore three of their early albums: Spine of God, Superjudge and Dopes to Infinity. Executive Producer: Jill Hundey "Black Mastermind", Spine of God (1992) Talkset #1 "Medicine", Spine of God (1992) "Zodiac Lung", Spine of God (1992) "Spine of God", Spine of God (1992) Talkset #2 "Cyclops Revolution", Superjudge (1993) "Twin Earth", Superjudge (1993) "Negasonic Teenage Warhead", Dopes to Infinity (1995) "Look to the Orb for the Warning", Dopes to Infinity (1995) Talkset #3 "Third Alternative", Dopes to Infinity (1995) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 120Burzum
EIt's been awhile since we've delved into the world of black metal, so we figured we'd discuss one of the most influential and notorious bands in the genre... Burzum. Instead of discussing the titillating and the controversial, we're just gonna talk about the music at where it falls into the history of extreme metal. Executive Producer: Shawna Perez "War", Burzum (1992) Talkset #1 "Lost Wisdom", Det Som Engang Var (1993) "Dominus Sathanas", Aske (1993) "Det Som Engang Var", Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (1994) Talkset #2 "Dunkelheit", Filosofem (1996) "Jesus' Tod", Filosofem (1996) "Kaimadalthas' Nedstigning", Belus (2010) Talkset #3 "Valen", Fallen (2011) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 118Napalm Death, Part 1
EFew bands hold as much cache in the extreme metal world as Napalm Death. From their early hardcore punk roots, they have blazeded trails that entire genres have followed. Some phases of their career have been more successful than others, but they have always pushed ahead, ADD MORE TO THIS. This episode we are pleased to be joined by Napalm Death enthusiast, Albert Mudrian (Editor-in-chief of Decibel Magazine) to discuss the first decade or so of their career. Also stay tuned for next week's show where we sample some never-before-heard Napalm, exclusive to this podcast. Ep 117Exodus
EThrash has the Big 4, but that group is missing one of the bands that embodies the term to its core... Exodus. Always a bit behind the curve (as far as release schedules) and didn't make the impact they could have initially, but they have made up for it in longevity. This episode we're exploring the early part of their career, showcasing: Bonded by Blood, Pleasures of the Flesh and Fabulous Disaster. Executive Producer: Brian Rogers "Metal Command", Bonded by Blood (1985) Talkset #1 "And Then There Were None", Bonded by Blood (1985) "Piranha", Bonded by Blood (1985) "Deliver Us to Evil", Bonded by Blood (1985) "Strike of the Beast", Bonded by Blood (1985) Talkset #2 "A Lesson of Violence", Pleasures of the Flesh (1987) "Braindead", Pleasures of the Flesh (1987) "Pleasures of the Flesh", Pleasures of the Flesh (1987) "Seeds of Hate", Pleasures of the Flesh (1987) Talkset #3 "Chemi-kill", Pleasures of the Flesh (1987) "Fabulous Disaster", Fabulous Disaster (1989) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 116Pentagram, Part 2
EPicking up where we left off last time.. The Victor Griffin, Joe Hasselvander and Martin Swaney-era of Pentagram. A decidedly different band than their 70s incarnation. The rock n roll has been bled out and the doom has really began to overtake their sound. Liebling's vocals aren't quite as bombastic as before, but what they create on the next 3 records is a blueprint for the next generation of doom purveyors. "Sinister", Relentless (1985) Talkset #1 "Your Lost I'm Free", Relentless (1985) "Burning Savior", Day of reckoning (1987) "Evil Seed", Day of reckoning (1987) "Broken Vow", Day of reckoning (1987) Talkset #2 "When the Screams Come", Day of reckoning (1987) "Too Late", Be Forewarned (1994) "Bride of Evil", Be Forewarned (1994) "The World Will Love Again", Be Forewarned (1994) "Wolf's Blood", Be Forewarned (1994) Talkset #3 "Be Forewarned", (7:14) Be Forewarned (1994) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 115Pentagram, Part 1
ESince the 70s Pentagram have flown the flag of doom. Founded by Bobby Liebling and Geof O'Keefe as a heavy rock act influenced by the likes of Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Sir Lord Baltimore and UFO, they spent the next 6 years churning out some of the best rock n roll to ever enter an ear canal. The tragedy is they only issued a few singles and never released a proper album until 1985 with a completely different lineup, only Liebling remaining. The self-titled debut began to lay the groundwork for what we think of as the 2nd wave of doom. This episode we discuss their early work, including their First Daze Here compilation album that features unreleased work from 1971-76 and their self-titled (also known as Relentless). Executive Producer: Emilia Lombardi "Forever My Queen", First Daze Here (2001) Talkset #1 "Starlady", First Daze Here (2001) "Review Your Choices", First Daze Here (2001) "Livin' in a Ram's Head", First Daze Here (2001) "20 Buck Spin", First Daze Here (2001) "Be Forewarned", First Daze Here (2001) Talkset #2 "Last Days Here", First Daze Here (2001) "Dying World", Relentless (1985) "Relentless", Relentless (1985) "The Ghoul", Relentless (1985) Talkset #3 "Sign of the Wolf (Pentagram)", Relentless (1985) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 113Unanimated
EWe're back to our favorite metal country, Sweden. This time to discuss one of the underrated acts that got overshadowed by the likes of Dissection and their ilk, Unanimated. Their pedigree is quite impressive, with members of Merciless, Entombed, Desultory, Dismember, General Surgery, Watain and Carbonized calling Unanimated home. They only put out two records, one in 1993 another in 1995, then came a 14-year hiatus. In 2009 they released the fantastic In the Light of Darkness album, which further cemented their place on the blackened death throne. With over a decade disbanded, Unanimated return with all the vigor and fire of a band half their age. Executive Producer: Adrian Camoens http://www.youtube.com/thechodega "At Dawn/Whispering Shadows", In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead (1993) Talkset #1 "Fire Storm", In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead (1993) "Through the Gates", In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead (1993) "Eye of the Greyhound", Ancient God of Evil (1995) Talkset #2 "Dead Calm", Ancient God of Evil (1995) "Depths of a Black Sea", Ancient God of Evil (1995) "Ruins", Ancient God of Evil (1995) "Die Alone", Ancient God of Evil (1995) Talkset #3 "The Endless Beyond", In the Light of Darkness (2009) "Death to Life", In the Light of Darkness (2009) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 110Best of 2011, Part I
E2010 has come to a close and it's time to put together the obligatory year end list. This year didn't have the amount of immediately obvious choices that 2009 did, but after much deliberation we came up with what we feel were the most interesting and enjoyable metal releases of 2010. Jason and I each came up with 10 albums and over the next 3 shows we'll discuss and dissect the year 2010 in metal. Kylesa, "Tired Climb", Spiral Shadow (2010) Kylesa, "Cheating Synergy", (2:51) Spiral Shadow (2010) Talkset #1 Cathedral, "Painting in the Dark", The Guessing Game (2010) Anathema, "A Simple Mistake", We're Here Because We're Here (2010) Iron Maiden, "The Alchemist", The Final Frontier (2010) Talkset #2 Triptykon, "Myopic Empire", Eparistera Daimones (2010) Inquisition, "Command of the Dark Crown", Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm (2010) Talkset #3 Dawnbringer, "Like an Earthquake", Nucleus (2010) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 109Canadian Metal, Part 4: Infernal Majesty "None Shall Defy"
EPart 4 of our Canadian metal discussion. This time we dissect the criminally underrated None Shall Defy album by Infernäl Mäjesty. Slayer meets Teutonic thrash, with a uniquely Canadian flair, makes None Shall Defy a proto-death metal, thrash classic. "Overlord", None Shall Defy (1987) Talkset #1 "R.I.P.", None Shall Defy (1987) "Night of the Living Dead", None Shall Defy (1987) "S.O.S.", None Shall Defy (1987) Talkset #2 "None Shall Defy", None Shall Defy (1987) "Skeletons in the Closet", None Shall Defy (1987) "Overlord", None Shall Defy (1987) Talkset #3 "Anthology of Death", None Shall Defy (1987) "Path of the Psyco", None Shall Defy (1987) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 108Canadian Metal, Part 3
EPart 3 of our Canadian metal discussion. This time we delve into the more "extreme" side of our neighbors to the north's metal cache. Starting out with punk-fueled, proto-tech-thrash masters Voivod and end the conversation in technical death metal territory with the likes of Cryptopsy, Gorguts and Martyr. Voivod, "Fuck Off and Die", Rrröööaaarrr (1986) Talkset #1 Voivod, "Overreaction", Killing Technology (1987) Voivod, "Macrosolutions to Megaproblems", Dimension Hatröss (1988) Voivod, "Nothingface", Nothingface (1989) Gorguts, "Disincarnated", Considered Dead (1991) Talkset #2 Gorguts, "Condemned to Obscurity", The Erosion of Sanity (1993) GORGUTS Gorguts, "Earthly Love", Obscura (1998) Cryptopsy, "Slit Your Guts", None So Vile (1996) Cryptopsy, "Phobophile", None So Vile (1996) The End, "Scent of Elegance", Within Dividia (2004) Talkset #3 Martyr, "Hopeless Hopes", Hopeless Hopes (1997) Darkthrone, "Canadian Metal", F.O.A.D. Ep 107Canadian Metal, Part 2: Annihilator "Alice In Hell"
E1989. The tail end of the thrash scene; with one notable exception... Annihilator. The Alice in Hell record, recorded in 1988 and released in 1989 on Roadrunner, was a culmination of the entire genre. Embodying elements of speed metal, hardcore punk, proto-death metal and every permutation of thrash, Alice in Hell is a fitting goodbye to a scene that brought extreme metal to a wider audience and made way for the underground to rise. This entry of the Canadian Metal series, we discuss the album track-by-track in an effort to better understand our neighbors to the North's vast wealth of metal skills and influence. "Crystal Ann", Alice in Hell (1989) "Alison Hell", Alice in Hell (1989) Talkset #1 "W.Y.T.D.", Alice in Hell (1989) "Wicked Mystic", Alice in Hell (1989) "Burns Like a Buzzsaw Blade", Alice in Hell (1989) Talkset #2 "Word Salad", Alice in Hell (1989) "Schizos (Are Never Alone), Part I & II", Alice in Hell (1989) "Ligeia", Alice in Hell (1989) Talkset #3 "Human Insecticide", Alice in Hell (1989) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 106Canadian Metal, Part 1
EWhen you think of Canada, the first thing that springs to mind isn't usually heavy metal. But after listening to this show it certainly should be. Bands that were muttered by the likes of Napalm Death, Entombed and Death in interviews, but for whatever reason always flew over our radar. No more. The first part of our Canadian Metal series explores the thrash, proto-death metal and heavy metal side of our northern neighbor's musical cache. Scream it proud: CANADIAN METAL! Ep 104Post-Carcass
EEveryone loves Carcass. Well up to a certain point in their career. I can safely state that from Reek of Putrefaction to Heartwork, most would agree that that they could do no wrong (I'm omitting the nut jobs who think they sold out with Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious). After the relative success of Heartwork and their signing to Columbia, they were posed to set the world on fire as a mainstream death metal band. But as they state themselves "I Told You So (Corporate Rock Really Does Suck)." Many were highly critical of their swansong, the aptly names Swansong, eventually released by Earache after Columbia shelved it, but now over 10 years later we thought it was worth giving it a second chance. Some see Swansong as a blemish to an otherwise flawless career, and to others this was their entry point to Carcass which opened the door to discovering their earlier output. This episode we reflect on Carcass' post-Heartwork output, including the Blackstar project (the Swansong lineup, sans Bill Steer + Mark "Griff" Griffiths ex-Cathedral). "Rock the Vote", Swansong (1996) Talkset #1 "Black Star", Swansong (1996) "Child's Play", Swansong (1996) "Polarized", Swansong (1996) "Firm Hand", Swansong (1996) Talkset #2 "Emotional Flatline", Wake Up and Smell the... Carcass. (1996) "Blood Spattered Banner", Wake Up and Smell the... Carcass. Ep 103Grave: Into the Early Grave
EBack to the early 1990s again. This time we're discuss seminal Swedish Death Metal act, Grave. Formed in 1986 as Corpse, then changed to the equally necrotic moniker Putrefaction, then finalizing as Grave in 1988. Often lumped into the Stockholm scene, Grave arose from Visby, a town on the island of Gotland just off the eastern coast of Sweden. This relative isolation is reflected in their sound, which was much more brutal and heavy (in a sonic sense). The trademarks of their sound was ultra-downtuned guitars and guttural vocals. More akin to American death metal than their Swedish peers. This episode we go through their early catalog, or their "classic" lineup consisting of Ola Lindgren, Jens "Jensa" Paulsson, and Jörgen Sandström. Their later output is quite good as well (with exception of the Hating Life LP), which we may explore in a future show. "Deformed", Into The Grave (1991) Talkset #1 "Into The Grave", Into The Grave (1991) "Obscure Infinity", Into The Grave (1991) "Extremely Rotten Flesh", Into The Grave (1991) "Morbid Way to Die", You'll Never See... (1992) Talkset #2 "You'll Never See", You'll Never See... (1992) "Brutally Deceased", You'll Never See... (1992) "...And Here I Die...Satisfied", ...And Here I Die...Satisfied EP (1993) "Black Dawn", ...And Here I Die...Satisfied EP (1993) Originally recorded by Corpse (1986) "Blodshed", Soulless (1994) Talkset #3 "Turning Black", Soulless (1994) "Soulless", Soulless (1994) "Rain", Soulless (1994) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 93Crucial Years in Metal: 2001
EContinuing our countdown of Crucial Years in Metal, we arrive at 2001. It was a year of reinventions and innovation that the metal world greatly needed to maintain relevance in critics circles. Bands like Cathedral came back with a fusion of all their various styles consolidated into a stripped down, crushingly heavy magnum opus, Pig Destroyer had refreshed grind, Enslaved had taken their songwriting to the next level and Katatonia refined their style into a perfect amalgam of indie rock, metal and everything in between. Add to that Converge’s Jane Doe and 2001 stands out in the annals of metal history as a banner year. Ep 92Crucial Years in Metal: 1988
EContinuing our countdown of Crucial Years in Metal, we arrive at 1988. A year when thrash was approaching it's zenith and grindcore and death metal were beginning their rise. The rapidly approaching reign of Earache Records was only a few years away and the tent pole bands of Carcass and Napalm Death were changing as quickly as they released records. Within a few short years we'd see the rise of Swedish Death Metal scene, black metal's second coming and the apparent decline of the whole genre. Turbulent years are on the horizon, but 1988 marked a year of beginnings and endings in the various genres and sub-genres of the metal umbrella. Metallica, "Blackened", ...and Justice For All Talkset #1 Queensrÿche, "Spreading the Disease", Operation: Mindcrime Voivod, "Tribal Convictions", Dimensional Hatross Napalm Death, "Lucid Fairytale", From Enslavement to Obliteration Carcass, "Burnt to a Crisp", Reek of Putrefaction Bolt Thrower, "Concession of Pain", In Battle There is No Law Talkset #2 Slayer, "Read Between the Lies", South of Heaven Testament, "Trial by Fire", A New Order Death, "Born Dead", Leprosy Bathory, "For All Those Who Died", Blood Fire Death Ministry, "The Missing", Land of Rape and Honey Talkset #3 Soundgarden, "Beyond The Wheel", Ultramega OK Danzig, "Mother", Danzig RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 91Crucial Years in Metal: 1985
EYes. Everyone has a top list of something it seems, and we're no different. Our approach to this cliche of journalism is highlighting landmark years in metal, with an emphasis on years that had an abundant of seminal releases. This also means that we're dealing in volume of records released in certain years, so we're missing some crucial LPs in our lists, but most of those we've covered or will cover in upcoming shows. So now it begins... number 10 in our list: 1985. (Disclaimer: we're trying to approach this from an extreme metal standpoint, not just metal in general. If that were the case, we'd be starting back in the 70s.) Iron Maiden , "Aces High", Live After Death Talkset #1 Megadeth, "Mechanix", Killing is My Business... and Business is Good! Kreator, "Endless Pain", Endless Pain Trouble, "Fear No Evil", Psalm 9 (formerly 'Trouble') Anthrax, "A.I.R.", Spreading the Disease Talkset #2 Possessed, "Pentagram", Seven Churches DRI, "I'd Rather Be Sleeping", Dealing With It! Celtic Frost, "Jewel Throne", To Mega Therion Slayer, "Necrophilliac", Hell Awaits Exodus, "And Then There Where None", Bonded by Blood Talkset #3 S.O.D., "Pussy-Whipped", Speak English or Die Distruction, "Bestial Invasion", Infernal Overkill Bathory, "The Return of Darkness and Evil", The Return... Ep 89Emperor: In The Nightside Eclipse
EGenerally accepted as one of the handful of pioneers of the second wave of Black Metal, Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse barely saw the light of day. With the majority of it's ranks either in prison or under suspicion, In the Nightside Eclipse is truely a perfect storm. Luckily a series of seemingly band events culminated into it's delayed release, which at the time seemed like a detriment, today it seemed to have been released at an ideal time to usher in the coming wave of symphonic black metal. For a much more exhaustive examination if the album's production, check out Precious Metal from DaCapo press. "Into the Infinity of Thoughts", In the Nightside Eclipse (1994) Talkset #1 "The Burning Shadows of Silence", In the Nightside Eclipse (1994) "Cosmic Keys to My Creation & Times", In the Nightside Eclipse (1994) "Beyond the Great Vast Forest", In the Nightside Eclipse (1994) Talkset #2 "Towards the Pantheon", In the Nightside Eclipse (1994) "The Majesty of the Night Sky", In the Nightside Eclipse (1994) "I Am the Black Wizards", In the Nightside Eclipse (1994) Talkset #3 "Inno A Satana", In the Nightside Eclipse (1994) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 87Hypocrisy, Part 1
EWe’re back to Sweden again, but this time with the well know, yet often overlooked Hypocrisy. Formed in 1990 after a stint in Florida with Malevolant Creation, the Tägtgren-helmed machine has churned out 11 full length albums. Some better than others, but some haven’t been given the proper attention due to several turds in a row. Beyond Hypocrisy, Peter Tägtgren has an impressive producer resume, with the likes of Dimmu Borgir’s Enthroned Darkness Triumphant, Immortal’s At The Heart of Winter & Celtic Frost’s Monotheist among others. After a slump in the early 2000s, Hypocrisy are back with a renewed vigor and a back to basics approach. Ep 83MC5
EIn an attempt to dig deeper into the origins of the metal genre we thought it would be interesting to delve into one of the most energetic bands in the history of, well music... the MC5! Just as our punk show examined the connections between metal and punk, in this episode we broaden our scope out a bit from the narrow confines of extreme metal and take a sonic history lesson with the help of Mike Johnston. The set list we compiled is heavy on rare and hard to find live versions, so even if you are familiar with the MC5, there are bound to be some gems you haven't heard before. Also check out the interview Mike did with Dennis "Machinegun" Thompson in 1995, here. "Trane Song", Gold Soundtrack (1972) Talkset #1 "I Can Only Give You Everything", The Big Bang! EPart 2 of our coverage of Celtic Frost this week. We explore To Mega Therion, Into The Pandemonium and Monotheist.
