Ep 173Deep Purple: In Rock vs. Machine Head
EThis episode we delve into the proto-heavy metal of Deep Purple. Ep 170Entombed: The EPs

Ep 169Jeff Hanneman
EUnfortunately we lost one of the great guitarists in all of music recently... Jeff Hanneman of Slayer. The loss struck closer to home for us than the likes of Dio or Jon Lord, while they were a blow to heavy music, Hanneman was our generation of metal and our entry into extreme music. The following are our favorite Hanneman-penned tracks. "South of Heaven" (Home recording), Soundtrack to the Apocalypse Talkset #1 "Die by the Sword", Show No Mercy "Tormentor", Show No Mercy "At Dawn They Sleep", Hell Awaits "War Ensemble", Seasons in the Abyss "Raining Blood", Reign in Blood Talkset #2 "Necrophiliac", Reign in Blood "Angel of Death", Reign in Blood "Altar of Sacrifice", Reign in Blood "Spill the Blood", South of Heaven "Dead Skin Mask", Seasons in the Abyss Talkset #3 "DDAMM", Undisputed Attitude "213", Divine Intervention RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 166History According to Maiden, Part 2
EWe've talked about Maiden in the past, but since one half of the Requiem cast is a history teacher by day, we figured why not do a Maiden show based around historical themes? This gave us a chance to play songs that we normally wouldn't and approach the show from a perspective of something Jason knows better than many of us... History! You may just learn something on part two. Ep 163Dissection: Reinkaos
EAfter two acclaimed records, Dissection frontman Jon Nödtveidt got involved in the Misanthropic Luciferian Order which led to him being an accomplice to murder and spent the next 7 years in prison. The buzz around the rebirth of Dissection was huge and expectations were high, but the release of their final album, Reinkaos was met with less than enthusiastic responses. We discuss this final chapter in the history of Dissection this episode and try to shed some light on this under appreciated record. Ep 162Dawn: Slaughtersun
EIn the next few episodes we're going to be spotlighting records that we feel are underrated or widely unknown. This installment is Sweden's Dawn. A band that were unfortunately lumped into the glut of the late 90s symphonic black metal and hyperspeed melodic death metal. Dawn, however stand above the rest in content and delivery. Bask in the Slaughtersun. Executive Producer: Adrian Camoens "The Knell and the World", Slaughtersun (1998) Talkset #1 "Falcula", Slaughtersun (1998) "Ride the Wings of Pestilence", Slaughtersun (1998) Talkset #2 "The Aphelion Deserts", Slaughtersun (1998) "Stalker's Blessing", Slaughtersun (1998) Talkset #3 "Malediction Murder", Slaughtersun (1998) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 159In Flames, Part 1
ESay what you will about the current incarnation of In Flames, but once upon a time they were leaders in the Gothenburg scene along with At The Gates and Dark Tranquility. They might have strayed a little along the way, but their early discography holds some gems that warrant discussion. For this episode we're joined by Monica Jackomino(ten years our junior) to discuss the early years of In Flames with two generations of metalheads. Executive Producer: Ron Reis "Behind Space", Lunar Strain (1994) Talkset #1 "Starforsaken", Lunar Strain (1994) "Everlost (Part I)", Lunar Strain (1994) "Upon an Oaken Throne", Lunar Strain (1994) "Timeless", Subterranean (1995) "Biosphere", Subterranean (1995) Talkset #2 "Stand Ablaze", Subterranean (1995) "Subterranean", Subterranean (1995) "Moonshield", The Jester Race (1996) "The Jester's Dance", The Jester Race (1996) "The Jester Race", The Jester Race (1996) Talkset #3 "Wayfaerer", The Jester Race (1996) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 158High on Fire
EFrom the ashes of Sleep, guitar maverick Matt Pike along with Des Kensel has carved an unmistakeable sonic identity of equal parts Mötorhead, Sabbath, 70s rock and fantasy themes ala Cirith Ungol and Dio with a propulsive rhythm section that is second to none. This episode we take a brief tour through the career of one of extreme music's most unlikely "success stories",High on Fire. Ep 157Aura Noir

Ep 156The Doom Occulta Brothers
EIt was a sad day when Immortal called it quits in 2003. But we didn't have to wait long until one of the Doom Occulta brothers came back with another frosty entry into the Blashyrkh cannon, with I. It incorporated the grim tone of Immortal, but added a triumphant/NWOBHM vibe that they hadn't really been explored before. The Popeye vocals and unusual riffing were still present, but you could still hear the soul of Immortal coming through. Then in 2009 Immortal rode back onto the scene with All Shall Fall, a more epic streamlined incarnation of their unique take on black metal. Expounding on the "Immortal sound" Demonaz unleashed The March of the Norse, which almost acts as a sister album to the afore mentioned All Shall Fall. The Doom Occulta brothers continue to Storm Through Red Clouds and Holocaust winds into the future... Executive Producer: Nick Green I, "Storm I Ride", Between Two Worlds (2006) Talkset #1 I, "Battalions", Between Two Worlds (2006) I, "Mountains", Between Two Worlds 2006) I, "Far Beyond the Quiet", Between Two Worlds (2006) I, "Cursed We Are", Between Two Worlds (2006) Talkset #2 Demonaz, "A Son of the Sword", March of the Norse (2011) Demonaz, "Where Gods Once Rode", March of the Norse (2011) Demonaz, "Under the Great Fires", March of the Norse (2011) Demonaz, "Over the Mountains", March of the Norse (2011) Talkset #3 Demonaz, "Northern Hymn", March of the Norse (2011) Demonaz, "All Blackened Sky", March of the Norse (2011) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 155At The Gates, Part 2
EPerhaps one of the most important bands in extreme metal. From their avant-garde beginnings to their thrash-infused later output, they have blazed their own unique path. Their Slaughter of the Soul record influenced a whole new sub-genre of metal (for better or worse) and their music seems as vital now as when it was released. At The Gates are a band that are well overdue for an episode spotlight. "Raped by the Light of Christ (Live)", Purgatory Unleased (2010) Talkset #1 "Terminal Spirit Disease", Terminal Spirit Disease (1994) "Forever Blind", Terminal Spirit Disease (1994) "The Fevered Circle", Terminal Spirit Disease (1994) "The Beautiful Wound (Live)", Purgatory Unleased (2010) "Captor of Sin", Slaytanic Slaughter (1996) Talkset #2 "Slaughter of the Soul (Live)", Purgatory Unleashed (2010) "Under a Serpent Sun", Slaughter of the Soul (1995) "Unto Others", Slaughter of the Soul (1995) "Need (Live)", Purgatory Unleashed (2010) "Blinded by Fear (Live)", Purgatory Unleashed (2010) Talkset #3 "Legion", Cursed to Tour (1996) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 151Pestilence
EWe don't often go to the Netherlands when coming up with show topics (although we should more often), but we thought it was high time that Pestilence got a little attention. Coming out of the mid-80s, they brought with them a thrash sensibility, but soon incorporated brutal/technical death metal elements, culminating in their Testimony of the Ancients album. This episode we're joined by frequent guest Chris Dick, as we navigate through their Consuming Impulse and Testimony of the Ancients records. Literally months in the making, the following 85-minutes of "explicit everything" features interviews with: Albert Mudrian, Barney Greenway, Shane Embury, David Vincent and Nick Holmes along with clips of from the original 1991 video. This is without question, the most comprehensive exploration of a Hard n Heavy video. On a side note: If anyone knows how to contact Jennifer or Grob from Sonic Relief Promotions, please let us know! EAs has become a yearly tradition, we go through and spotlight our favorite releases of 2011 from the extreme metal world. Ep 148Witchery: The Toxine Years
EBefore the retro-Thrash revival of the 2000's, there were a handful of death metal bands channeling the genre's energy and aesthetics. Witchery brought elements from Teutonic thrash, NWOBHM and Mercyful Fate, while keeping the barbarity of death metal. Featuring members of Satanic Slaughter, Seance, The Haunted, Opeth and Mercyful Fate, Witchery is a virtual who's who of metal royalty. Executive Producer: Rishi Gajria "The Reaper", Restless & Dead (1998) "Witchery", Restless & Dead (1998) Talkset #1 "The Hangman", Restless & Dead (1998) "Awaiting The Exorcist", Restless & Dead (1998) "Born in the Night", Restless & Dead (1998) "The Howling", Witchburner EP (1999) "The Executioner", Witchburner EP (1999) "Witchburner", Witchburner EP (1999) Talkset #2 "The Guillotine", Dead, Hot & Ready (1999) "The Devil and the Damage Done", Dead, Hot & Ready (1999) "The Storm", Symphony for the Devil (2001) "Hearse of the Pharoahs", Symphony for the Devil (2001) "Immortal Death", Don't Fear the Reaper (2006) "Legion of Hades", Don't Fear the Reaper (2006) Talkset #3 "The Ritual", Don't Fear the Reaper (2006) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 147Slayer: The Metal Blade Years
EWhat more can be said about Slayer? Well, that's kinda what we thought too. This episode has been a longtime coming and we had a certain amount of hesitation due to the fact that so much has already been documented about the band, but we ended up having quite a bit to say about this early era. Along with Celtic Frost and Venom,Slayer are one of the most important bands to help shape the extreme metal world. EAfter last week's dose of black metal, we figured it was time to represent some true "white metal". Nearly 11 years into their career, Trouble jumped leaps and bounds with producer Rick Rubin on their self titled 1990 album. Similar toKyuss, Trouble was a band that didn't fit into any scene and really was ahead of it's time. Alternative rock was rising, thrash was waning and the extreme metal scene was on the verge of some mainstream representation. Trouble were an island among these other scenes and until years later, this album wasn't really appreciated like it could have been. Now long out of print, Trouble's Trouble is ripe for reissue. "At the End of My Daze", Trouble (1990) Talkset #1 "The Wolf", Trouble (1990) "Psychotic Reaction", Trouble (1990) "A Sinner's Fame", Trouble (1990) "The Misery Show (Act II)", Trouble (1990) Talkset #2 "R.I.P.", Trouble (1990) "Black Shapes of Doom", Trouble (1990) "Heaven on My Mind", Trouble (1990) "E.N.D.", Trouble (1990) Talkset #3 "All is Forgiven", Trouble (1990) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 145Craft
EBlack metal seems to be of of the most conservative of genres, but also one of the most innovative. Craft falls into the later. They approach their songwriting through the lens of lo fi black metal (ala Darkthrone/Burzum) but manage to retain a high production value that doesn't lessen the impact of the music with spit and polish. Born from the land of Bathory, but owes more to their Norwegian brethren, Craft make a compelling case for destroying all mankind and matter. Executive Producer: Maria Koza "Ablaze", Terror Propaganda (2002) Talkset #1 "Death to Planet Earth", Total Soul Rape (2000) "Reaktor 4", Terror Propaganda (2002) "False Orders Begone", Terror Propaganda (2002) "Fuck The Universe", Fuck The Universe (2005) Talkset #2 "Thorns in the Planet's Side", Fuck The Universe (2005) "Terni Exusta: Queen Despair", Fuck The Universe (2005) "Destroy All", Fuck The Universe (2005) "Succumb to Sin", Void (2011) "I Want to Commit Murder", Void (2011) Talkset #3 "Come Resonance of Doom", Void (2011) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 144Voivod, Part 2
EWe've arrived at part 2 of our Voivod coverage. This second half of their career sees the most turbulent upheaval of the core group. Members leave, a member dies, styles change and a new incarnation is born. Voivod scholar and friend of the show, Jeff Wagner join us again to discuss this truly crucial band. Ep 143Voivod, Part 1
ENot often can you say that a band sounds like nobody else. Voivod are one of the rare cases where it's true. Formed in 1982 in Canada, Voivod have run the gamut of extreme metal styles, but have alway retained a very unique dissonance and mythology that are distinctly their own. Voivod scholar and friend of the show, Jeff Wagner join us this episode to discuss the first chapter of this truly crucial band. "Condemned to the Gallows", To the Death (1984) Talkset #1 "Live For Violence", War & Pain (1984) "Horror", Rrröööaaarrr (1986) "Killing Technology", Killing Technology (1987) Talkset #2 "Forgotten in Space", Killing Technology (1987) "Chaosmongers", Dimension Hatröss (1988) "Cosmic Drama", Dimension Hatröss (1988) "Nothingface", Nothingface (1989) Talkset #3 "Into My Hypercube", Nothingface (1989) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 142Sahg
ECulled from members of Gorgoroth, Audrey Horn and Manngard; Sahg blend doom, rock n roll and psychedelia into a seamless package that is deceptively simple. But simple doesn't mean simplistic. More streamlined and thoughtful. Similarly to Pig Destroyer, they craft riffs that you'd swear you've heard before, but you can't place them. We delve into their full 3 album discography on this episode and shed some light on a band that is criminally underrated. "In Through the Eye", III (2010) "Baptism of Fire", III (2010) Talkset #1 "Godless Faith", I (2006) "Soul Exhile", I (2006) "Boundless Demise", I (2006) "The Executioner Undead", I (2006) Talkset #2 "Echoes Ring Forever", II (2008) "Star-Crossed", II (2008) "Mortify", III (2010) "Burden", III (2010) Talkset #3 "Mother's Revenge", III (2010) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 135Eucharist
ESweden seems to be our goto country, so it's no surprise we're back to discuss one of the obscure gems of the early 90s... Eucharist. An anomaly in the melodic death metal scene, they have more in common with At The Gates Red in the Sky... than Dark Tranquility or In Flames, using weird time signatures and unconventional riffs. We basically go through every era of their career in this crucial episode. Executive Producer: Adrian Camoens "The View", Deaf Metal Sampler (1993) Talkset #1 "Into the Cosmic Sphere", Greeting Immortality 7" (1992) "Greeting Immortality", A Velvet Creation (1993) "My Bleeding Tears", A Velvet Creation (1993) "A Velvet Creation", A Velvet Creation (1993) Talkset #2 "Wounded and Alone", W.A.R. Ep 134Primordial, Part 1
EIreland isn't a country often associated with the extreme metal scene. But there is one notable exception... Primordial. The struggles and oppression they have overcome as a people is clearly felt through Primordial's lyrics, songwriting and imagery. Similar to the "viking metal" movement, they have used national pride and history as a basis for their entire career. In this first part we explore their first four records. Executive Producer: Brian Douglas "Journey's End", A Journey's End (1998) Talkset #1 "Fuil Arsa", Imrama (1995) "Autumn's Ablaze", A Journey's End (1998) "The Burning Season", Spirit The Earth Aflame (2000) Talkset #2 "Gods to the Godless", Spirit The Earth Aflame (2000) "The Soul Must Sleep", Spirit The Earth Aflame (2000) "The Heretic's Age", Storm Before Calm (2002) Talkset #3 "Sons of The Morrigan", Storm Before Calm (2002) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 133Mayhem: De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
EEveryone knows the controversy surrounding Mayhem and the death of Euronymous at the hand of Varg Vikernes and the suicide of previous singer Dead, but beyond the sensationalism there is is a fantastic musical document that remains. This episode we discuss the merits of one of the most important black metal albums of all time. The riffing, unconventional songwriting and one of the most impressive drum performances up to that point all add up to a wealth of influence that is still heard to this day. Executive Producer: Ron Merz "Funeral Fog", De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) Talkset #1 "Chainsaw Gutsfuck", Deathcrust (1987) Talkset #2 "Freezing Moon", De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) "Cursed in Eternity", De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) "Pagan Fears", De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) Talkset #3 "Life Eternal", De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) "From the Dark Past", De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) "Cursed by Time and Dust", De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) Talkset #4 "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas", De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 132Tucker-Era Morbid Angel
EMorbid Angel is quite possibly the most important band in extreme metal, influencing countless black and death metal acts and reshaping the possibilities of extreme music. In recent years they have been flying under-the-radar with the promise of an album reuniting the classic David Vincent-era lineup. With such lofty expectations of what the new music might hold, fans were clamoring to hear Morbid Angel back at their best. But as many have sadly discovered, their new album sounds like an out of touch attempt at recapturing their classic inventiveness, but in a sadly pathetic way. So this (along with the advice of Albert Mudrian) we decided to reexamine the Steve Tucker-era Morbid Angel and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and creativity in this later era output. Executive Producer: Adam Dickinson "Prayer of Hatred", Formulas Fatal to the Flesh (1998) Talkset #1 "Invocation to the Continual Ones", Formulas Fatal to the Flesh (1998) "Chambers of Dis", Formulas Fatal to the Flesh (1998) "Nothing is Not", Formulas Fatal to the Flesh (1998) Talkset #2 "Covenant of Death", Formulas Fatal to the Flesh (1998) "Opening of the Gates", Gateways to Annihilation (2000) "He Who Sleeps", Gateways to Annihilation (2000) "To the Victor the Spoils", Gateways to Annihilation (2000) "At One With Nothing", Gateways to Annihilation (2000) Talkset #3 "Curse the Flesh", Heretic (2003) "Enshrined by Grace", Heretic (2003) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 131Overkill
EIt's been a long time coming, but we thought it was high time that we brought Overkill into the discussion. Considered one of the originators of thrash, yet often relegated to a second tier act. Similar to Exodus, circumstances prevented them from releasing a record until well after Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax already gained prominence in the scene. This episode we discuss the first 5 albums and hopefully shine a well deserved light on this crucial thrash band. Executive Producer: Olli Makkonen "Rotten to the Core", Feel the Fire (1985) Talkset #1 "Deny the Cross", Taking Over (1987) "Power Surge", Taking Over (1987) "Drunken Wisdom", Under the Influence (1988) "End of the Line", Under the Influence (1988) Talkset #2 "Birth of Tension", Years of Decay (1989) "Years of Decay", Years of Decay (1989) "Coma", Horrorscope (1991) "Infectious", Horrorscope (1991) Talkset #3 "Live Young, Die Free", Horrorscope (1991) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 130Maryland Death Fest
EWe're back from vacation and with something of a different show than the usual. By listener suggestion, we do a breakdown of our experiences at Maryland Death Fest 2011 and throw in a some music from the acts that really stood out. Ep 129Witchfinder General
EBack to some of the roots of extreme metal this week. Black Sabbath might be the first thing to come to mind when you hear Witchfinder General, but beyond some surface similarities, they are quite different beasts. Coming out of the NWOBHM scene, they didn't really fit in with their peers and were only a blip on the radar, until later touted as fuel for the later doom scene eruption in the late 80s. We discuss their blatant influence on Cathedral as well as how their lyrical content and image were a precursor to modern doom acts like Electric Wizard. Executive Producer: Justin Hofman "Free Country", Death Penalty (1982) Talkset #1 "Soviet Invasion", Soviet Invasion Single (1982) "Invisible Hate", Death Penalty (1982) "Death Penalty", Death Penalty (1982) "No Stayer", Death Penalty (1982) "R.I.P.", Death Penalty (1982) Talkset #2 "Witchfinder General", Death Penalty (1982) "Love on Smack", Friends of Hell (1983) "Music", Friends of Hell (1983) "Friends of Hell", Friends of Hell (1983) "I Lost You", Friends of Hell (1983) Talkset #3 "Quietus Reprise", Friends of Hell (1983) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 128The Notwist
EWe're trying something a little different this week. We often discuss and relate non-metal acts into our music conversations, but this time we're going to make a non-metal band the subject of this week's show. While definitely having metallic elements, Germany's The Notwist encompass multiple genres into their music and have a pervasive "unsettling" undertone that makes them a good (although not obvious) choice for our first foray into discussing a non-metal band on the show. Executive Producer: Shawna Perez "Is it Fear?", The Notwist (1990) Talkset #1 "I've Not Forgotten You", The Notwist (1990) "Belle De L'ombre/Walk On", Nook (1992) "Nook", Nook (1992) "The Incredible Change of Our Alien", Only in America (1996) "Johnny and Mary", Only In America (1996) Talkset #2 "Puzzle", 12 (1995) "Electronic Bear", Shrink (1998) "Pick Up The Phone", Neon Golden (2002) "Neon Golden", Neon Golden (2002) Crystal Age, "Tempt Not They Maker", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) Talkset #3 "Where in This World", The Devil, You + Me (2008) "Alphabet", The Devil, You + Me (2008) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 127House of Usher / Crystal Age
EWe're digging into the vault on this one. Two Swedish bands that had humble beginnings, but contained members that would go on to be a part of bands that would shape the genre. House of Usher, a band with little output, but a huge reputation within Swedish death metal circles and featured Martin Larsson who would go onto At The Gates and Stefan Källarsson from Crypt of Kerberos. Then we have Crystal Age, an abrasive, technical death metal outfit with a penchant for Star Wars lyrics featuring Oscar Dronjak, who would later go on to form Hammerfall and had a stint in Ceremonial Oath, and drummer Hans Nilsson, from Dimension Zero and Liers in Wait, was also on the Far Beyond Divine Horizons. Executive Producer: René Allingham Sørensen House of Usher, "Revengeful", On the Very Verge 7" (1991) Talkset #1 House of Usher, "Rather Black", On the Very Verge 7" (1991) House of Usher, "Battle of Spectrum", Projections of a Stained Mind (1991) Crystal Age, "Far Beyond Divine Horizons", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) Crystal Age, "Fortune and Glory", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) Crystal Age, "The Beauty of Evil", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) Talkset #2 Crystal Age, "Son of Time", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) Crystal Age, "Windwalker", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) Crystal Age, "Crystals of the Wise", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) Crystal Age,"On Blooded Wings", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) Crystal Age, "Tempt Not They Maker", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) Talkset #3 Crystal Age, "Star Destroyer", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) Crystal Age, "Retaliation", Far Beyond Divine Horizons (1995) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon!
