EIt had to happen... quiet possibly the best known extreme metal band in the world, Cannibal Corpse, is the subject of this week's show. Ep 73Metal & Punk Unite!
EThis week we bridge the divide between punk and metal by going back to the roots to discover we're not really that different. This week Mark is joined by Kevin Cross, illustrator and musician (Big Rig, Pitch Black, Nerve Agents and others) as we heal the rift of the punk and metal brotherhood. The approach to our song selection was informed by trying to spotlight 'metal' elements within punk music that could act as an inroad for metal fans to appreciate the genre. Now lets all get along and embrace our similarities... Dead Kennedy's, "Religious Vomit", In God We Trust, Inc. Talkset #1 Adrenalin O.D., "Rock & Roll Gas Station", The Wacky Hi-Jinks of... Ep 72Dissection: Storm of the Light's Bane
EIn our further blackened death coverage (and, man do we love genre names) we conclude our discussion on Dissection, with their Storm of the Light’s Bane record. Considered a benchmark album, and rightly so, Storm… still holds up as one of the genre defining classics of the 90s. Dissection did have a brief return to the scene with Reinkaos and Maha Kali, but neither captured the fire and blazing ferocity as their first two records, so we’re ending our coverage here. Don’t get me wrong, there are some good songs on the a fore mentioned albums, but not enough in our minds to justify another show. So enjoy the blackened metal of death with Dissection. "At the Fathomless Depths", Storm of the Light’s Bane (1995) "Night’s Blood", Storm of the Light’s Bane (1995) Talkset #1 "Unhallowed", Storm of the Light’s Bane (1995) "Where Dead Angels Lie", Storm of the Light’s Bane (1995) "Retribution", Storm of the Light’s Bane - Storm of the Light’s Bane (1995) Talkset #2 "Thorns of Crimson Death", Storm of the Light’s Bane (1995) "Soul Reaper", Storm of the Light’s Bane (1995) Talkset #3 "No Dreams Breed in Breathless Sleep", Storm of the Light’s Bane (1995) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 71Helmet
EBack to the late 80s, the post-hardcore/rock scene that for better or worse seemed to have sew the seeds of Nu Metal. But before the deluge of garbage we had Helmet. Looking back, you can hear their influence penetrated into a much of the rock/hardcore scenes. Revisit Helmet with us. Ep 70Ulver: The Black Metal Trilogie
ESince we love black metal so much and the seasons are changing, leading into the grim frostbitten kingdoms of winter, we thought we'd throw another Norway show at you. This week is Ulver. Many may know the versatile front man, Garm from his many side projects or his more electronic endeavors, but this episode we'll be focusing on their "Black Metal Trilogie." Bergtatt, Kveldssanger & Nattens Madrigal. For ease of reading, I'll be listing the songs as us stupid Americans can understand them. "Lost in the Forest of Trolls", Bergtatt (1994) Talkset #1 "The Sun Goes Down Behind The Hills", Bergtatt (1994) "She Noticed She Was Being Watched", Bergtatt (1994) "Words", Kveldssanger (1995) "Mountaintop Picture", Kveldssanger (1995) Talkset #2 "East of the Sun and West of the Moon", Kveldssanger (1995) "Clad in the Colours of Night", Kveldssanger (1995) "Exodus", Kveldssanger (1995) Talkset #3 "Of Wolf and Fear", Nattens Madrigal (1996) "Of Wolf and Hatred", Nattens Madrigal (1996) Talkset #4 "Of Wolf and Passion", Nattens Madrigal (1996) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 69Thorns
EBack to Norway again-- this time the very influential, yet marginally known act... Thorns. For all intents and purposes Thorns is the musical vehicle for Snorre W. Ruch, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and served 8 years for being an accomplice in Euronymous' (Mayhem) murder, which added to his lack of wide visibility in the scene until his 2001 self titled album. Previously to his 2001 debut, he released Thorns vs Emperor, in an attempt to reintroduce himself to the scene as a prelude to Thorns. Ruch has also been a longtime collaborator with Satyricon, contributed to writing De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and in a general sense his unique approach to sonic barbarity and unconventional songwriting can be felt throughout the black metal and extreme metal scenes. "Aerie Descent", Nordic Metal (1995) Talkset #1 "Funeral Marches to the Grave", Trondertun Demo (1992) "Fall", Grymyrk Demo (1991) "Aerie Descent", Thorns vs Emperor (1998) Talkset #2 "Existence", Thorns (2001) "World Playground Deceit", Thorns (2001) "Stellar Master Elite", Thorns (2001) Talkset #3 "Underneath the Universe pt. 2", Thorns (2001) "Vortex", Thorns (2001) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 68The Melvins (The Atlantic Years)
EIn an effort to keep our scope of metal broad... this week we bring you The Melvins. We'll be focusing on their Atlantic years, which gives a good cross section of their sound without laboring you, dear listener with their more noisy, experimental stuff (maybe another show). "Honey Bucket", Houdini (1993) Talkset #1 "Night Goat", Houdini Live: A Live History of Gluttony and Lust (2005) "Hag Me", Houdini (1993) "Teet", Houdini (1993) Talkset #2 "Joan of Arc", Houdini (1993) "Skweetis", Stoner Witch (1994) "Queen", Stoner Witch (1994) "At The Stake", Stoner Witch (1994) Talkset #3 "Revolve", Stoner Witch (1994) "Buck Owens", Stag (1996) "Skin Horse", Stag (1996) "Berthas", Stag (1996) Talkset #4 "The Bit", Stag (1996) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 67Dissection: The Somberlain
EAfter a brief hiatus for Labor Day, we're back with another album spotlight episode--Dissection: The Somberlain. For a band with such a brief career, they left a lasting impression and presence within the extreme metal scene still felt today. With their Storm of the Light's Bane album and At The Gates' Slaughter of the Soul, they effectively closed the door on what was thought possible in death metal. This is the time when many death metal acts were really shedding their extreme roots and venturing into more mainstream territory. This episode we focus on their debut record, The Somberlain, a hungry, ambitious, fury of a album which injected elements of thrash, black metal and an obscene amount of melody. "Black Horizons", The Somberlain (1993) Talkset #1 "The Somberlain", The Somberlain (1993) "A Land Forlorn", The Somberlain (1993) "Heaven's Damnation", The Somberlain (1993) Talkset #2 "Frozen", The Somberlain (1993) "Into Infinite Obscurity", The Somberlain (1993) "In The Cold Winds of Nowhere", The Somberlain (1993) "The Grief Prophecy", The Somberlain (1993) Talkset #3 "Mistress of the Bleeding Sorrow", The Somberlain (1993) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 66Kreator
EIt's been a while since we've gone into the world of thrash, and what thrash band outside of Slayer have influenced more extreme metal bands... Kreator. Germany's Kreator have had a hell of a long tenure of fantastic output, with only a brief turd period in the 90s. For the purposes of this episode Jason and I are doing a "best of" episode. At least out favorites, so tear the sleeves off your shirt and prepare for Kreator! EThe final installment of our Judas Priest coverage, focusing on Screaming for Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith, Ram it Down and Painkiller. Ep 64Entombed: Left Hand Path
EQuite possibly one of the most important albums in extreme metal, Entombed's Left Hand Path captured the ferocity, darkness and explosive energy of Swedish death metal more concise than most of their peers. Much of this can be attributed to many of the songs being around in one form or another for years before Entombed ever drew their logo on a cassette case. Nihilist, the precursor to Entombed, was a testing ground for 90% of Left Hand Path's material, and this moniker was whom was signed to Earache initially. After a minor lineup and name change, Entombed recorded what is now considered on of the benchmarks of Swedish Death Metal. "Left Hand Path", Left Hand Path (1990) TALKSET #1 "Drowned", Left Hand Path (1990) "Revel In Flesh", Left Hand Path (1990) Originally recorded 1988 on the Only Shred Remain demo as Nihilist. EPart two of our Judas Priest coverage. This episode we discuss: Stained Class (1978), Hell Bent For Leather (1978), British Steel (1980) and Screaming for Vengence (1982) This is the era where we see Priest 'perfect' their sound with Stained Class and begin the down the road of stripping down their style to bare bones. Ep 62Celestial Season
EBack to the Netherlands this week, with another lost gem of a band, Celestial Season. Their unique blend of Peaceville-style doom mixed with Kyuss/stoner rock added a warmth that many of their peers lacked. We Discuss Their 1993 debut, Forever Scarlet Passion and their 1995 genre bender, Solar Lovers. They went on to record a few more albums, but they didn’t have the same emotional impact that these first two did. This pair of records captures a moment in time that has yet to be surpassed. "Decamerone", Solar Lovers (1995) Talkset #1 "Merciful", Forever Scarlet Passion (1993) "In Sweet Bitterness", Forever Scarlet Passion (1993) "Together in Solitude", Forever Scarlet Passion (1993) Talkset #2 "Solar Child", Solar Lovers (1995) 19 minutes "Will You Wait for the Sun?", Solar Lovers (1995) "Vienna", Solar Lovers (1995) Talkset #3 "The Scent of Eve", Solar Lovers (1995) RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! The following year he recorded with Comecon on the Converging Conspiracies album (1993) and from 95-97 he toured with Bolt Thrower. Meanwhile, Asphyx recorded S/T, Embrace of Death, and God Cries sans Van Drunen. Ep 55Candlemass
EIn historical context, Candlemass is a corner stone of modern metal. EBack to black metal this week, but not by the numbers black metal. Funeral Mist take the genre to a different place-- one that's a dark layered, textural nightmare of sounds and atmosphere. The mastermind behind Funeral Mist, Arioch (also known as Mortuus from Marduk) has crafted an impressive landscape of biblical brutality and sonic barbarity over his relatively short career. We'll be listening to selections from their debut EP Devilry, 2003's Salvation and 2009's Maranatha. RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon! Ep 44Obscura / Ablaze My Sorrow
EThe last five episodes we recorded in a single session, since Jason and I live an hour apart, so this installment we decided to play things a little different. We start out this week's show playing a little catch up, announcing the launch of the Requiem site (which you are no doubt aware of if your reading this), what's been going on (in a metal sense) and kind of reintroduce ourselves and what we're about. We thought this would be a good chance to change things up a bit since we've had a string of 2-part shows, so this week we're featuring two acts that have nothing to do with one another. One an older lost gem, Ablaze My Sorrow, and the other a newer act that has really blown us away, Obscura. Join us for our first split show and as always let us know what you think of the show by dropping us a line. RequiemMetal.com Email us - [email protected] Support us on Patreon!
