On Today’s episode of The World In My Eyes we’re talking President’s Day, and just what the hell is this weird holiday in the middle of February anyway? Back in the good old school days, February was an important month — not just because it included the eagerly-anticipated Valentine’s Day, but because even though it was the shortest month of the year, it contained two holidays. Usually combined with a Teacher’s Day, you would get two school-free days for the kids and terrific bargains on bedding, linen, and towels at department store white sales. What wasn’t to like about February?Nowadays, though, many of us — whether we be employees or students — don’t get any weekdays off at all in February, or we’re offered a single holiday that falls on the third Monday in February and is neither Lincoln’s nor Washington’s Birthday but some hybrid known as “Presidents’ Day.” What happened to our traditional February holidays? And just what the heck are we commemorating on “Presidents’ Day”? Some of us think we’re observing George Washington’s Birthday; some of us think we’re celebrating the combined birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln (formerly separate holidays conveniently smashed into one), and some of us think we’re honoring the memory of all U.S. presidents past and present. So what the hell is President’s Day anyway?Throughout the 19th century, George Washington was the towering figure of U.S. history to the American public. In honor of the man who commanded the Continental Army and led the American colonies to victory in the Revolutionary War, served as first President of the United States of America, and earned the moniker “Father of Our Country,” Washington’s Birthday, February 22, was celebrated with more patriotic fervor than any holiday save the Fourth of July. Accordingly, the observance of Washington’s Birthday was made official in 1885 when President Chester Alan Arthur signed a bill establishing it as a federal holiday. Welcome Renegade Nation it’s me Naughty Nicole and it’s time for another Renegade Review. And this go round, we’re focusing on the odd and visually stunning offering from FX entitled Legion. I’ll admit, my fan-girling, Marvel-worshiping heart was all aflutter when I heard about this show making its way to the small screen, and as a devoted reader of the comic books and watcher of movies, I couldn’t wait to see how Fargo’s Noah Hawley approached this rich subject. So let’s jump right in…How do you show the inside of a person’s mind? And what if that mind isn’t typical? What if that mind has supernatural powers? Each of these questions adds another layer to Legion’s portrayal of David Haller portrayed by the gifted Dan Stevens, and cements it as one of the most visually stunning television series perhaps ever on the air. Based on the Marvel Comic series and developed for FX by Fargo’s Noah Hawley, Legion explores the extraordinarily powerful mind of a less famous mutant (as in the X-Men, yes). But though we’ve seen plenty of Marvel and DC superheroes dominate the big and small screens in recent years, none have been as unique and genre-defying as Legion. Like David, it stands apart.Legion follows a man named David Haller, who has lived in a mental institution for most of his adult life after suffering from visual and auditory hallucinations. Diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, Haller is abandoned by his family — save for a sister — and he resigns himself to the belief that he’s “crazy,” taking the diagnosis and his current living arrangement in stride. In the comics, David is the son of Professor Xavier, something the TV show is not ready to address for a while (and it will unlikely be directly connected to any X-Men cinematic universe). But that shadow of a connection means that Legion doesn’t have to spend time world-building, and instead, can focus completely on David’s journey — one that will appeal to superhero enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. Well, if you like weird stuff.

They’ve launched APB off the back of the incoming reboot of the very successful 24, and if patterns hold true, this should launch APB as strong as Lucifer. But that’s only if 24: Legacy performs as well as the X-files did. So the problem as I see it is this, Fox has spent the better part of the 2000’s trying desperately to create the next great high-conceptual procedural. Typically these shows fall short due to an over-reliance on premise over character. You know, a future world where robots are cops as much as humans, or a man brought back to life after being killed in his senior years – who can forget Almost Human and Second Chance. Both huge flops for fox: But what makes the network’s latest attempt with APB different is the nature of the shows construction .This time, the premise is merely a tool aiding an already successful formula we all know so well. And, surprisingly, it’s not just a greeting card and candy holiday!Now it is not exactly known why the 14th of February is known as Valentine's Day or if the noble Valentine really had any relation to this day. The history of Valentine's Day is impossible to be obtained from any archive and the veil of centuries gone by has made the origin behind this day even more difficult to trace. But we do have some legends that are our source for the history of Valentine's Day, so take aim at that Stupid Cupid and let’s jump in. The modern St. Valentine's Day celebrations are said to have been derived from both ancient Christian and Roman tradition. As per one legend, the holiday has originated from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalis/Lupercalia, a fertility celebration that used to be observed annually on February 15. But the rise of Christianity in Europe saw many pagan holidays being renamed for and dedicated to the early Christian martyrs. Lupercalia was no exception. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius turned Lupercalia into a Christian feast day and set its observance a day earlier, on February 14. He proclaimed February 14 to be the feast day in honor of Saint Valentine, a Roman martyr who lived in the 3rd century. It is this St. Valentine whom the modern Valentine's Day honors.

But since this was a long-time listener, and he asked so nicely, I thought I would honor his wishes. So I decided I’d pick one of the movies that the Hollywood crowd is dubbing as Oscar-worthy and give it a whirl. So, today's show will be a review of the movie Hidden Figures. So the movie centers on the great space race between the United States and Russia from the 1960’s. This period drama set during the space race peels back the curtain on a shameful corner of racial inequality and pays respect to a small group of people who didn’t get it at the time: the black female “human computers” at NASA whose brilliance helped launch America into space. Now this is based on a true story, and normally I love movies like this. And don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy this movie too, but there were a few things that I think could have been so much better, but we’ll get to that.
