Yep, I know you guys were thinking Bermuda triangle and then I go and throw you for a loop, but now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… and the not quite so well known Bennington Triangle.Followers of folklore and aficionados of the paranormal are certainly familiar with the Bermuda Triangle and perhaps even southeastern Massachusetts’ Bridgewater Triangle. But one lesser-known cousin of these areas infamous for their strange disappearances holds more than its fair share of tantalizing mysteries: the Bennington Triangle of Vermont. The Bennington Triangle was a name given to a mysterious area in southwestern Vermont, first coined by author Joe Citro, describing an area in which a number of people went missing between 1920 and 1950. Primarily known for the Battle of Bennington, the region is rich in historical events dating back to the 1700’s. Bennington is fertile ground for ghostly events, folklore and supernatural occurrences. The region is often referred to as the “Bennington Triangle” due to the many odd, unexplained happenings within its surroundings, buildings and nearby mountains. In fact, Native Americans consider Glastenbury Mountain “cursed” and used it strictly for burying their dead. Locals believe that Native Americans regarded Glastenbury as “cursed” and avoided it, as well as tales of hairy “wild men” and other strange beasts in the woods. They believed the land to be cursed because all four winds met in that spot. There is also mention in Native American folklore of an enchanted stone which is said to swallow anything that steps on it.

Remember the cell of five terrorists who established a training camp in the New Mexico desert? Their makeshift compound, was discovered because of a search for a missing boy and a plea for help that came from Facebook, answered by an imam who was the first Muslim to offer opening prayer before the U.S. House of Representatives, and also the father of one of the terrorists. This is a story full of twists and turns that would seem invented by a Hollywood screenwriter, except that it’s all true and horrifying. It began with an affair between polygamist Siraj Wahhaj and the woman who became his second wife, Jany Leveille. They decided to kidnap Siraj’s son, then gather their friends to set up a terrorist training camp in the remote desert. Unfortunately, the boy, 3-year-old Abdul-ghani Wahhaj, had a seizure disorder that Siraj and Jany decided to cure with an exorcism that resulted in his death. Siraj Ibn Wahhaj and Jany Leveille, are charged with abuse of a child resulting in the death of a child and conspiracy to commit abuse of a child. However, Jany was recently found mentally unfit to stand trial, and is now in a psychiatric hospital. She saw herself as a religious prophet for the group and not only believed the boy was possessed by evil spirits, but that the dead would rise and instruct them on the government institutions they were to destroy.

I saw three lights that were moving so erratically and beyond anything I’ve ever seen I’m not sure they were of this Earth. Now, I live close enough to a very large military base so I’m familiar with helicopters, drones and even transport planes. These lights weren’t any of these. Indeed such stories of wagering one’s soul for these supernatural benefits and gifts are so ingrained in various cultures, especially ones based in Christianity, that “to make a deal with the Devil” has become a common colloquial proverb in many places. Yet as entwined as the idea of these diabolical pacts may be with myth, legend, fiction and folklore, there have been over the centuries those who have been said to have allegedly made very real, literal bargains with the actual Devil himself or at least potent demons. These are strange tales which have caused such pacts to stretch out from fiction into the real world, suggesting that not only are they purportedly possible, but that demonic entities and even Satan himself somehow in fact really exist.

These were the words softly uttered to Rose Berini from a little boy dressed in white roaming her upstairs hall. This boy wasn’t one of her two children though asking odd questions, he was not of this world .The poltergeist experiences, later named The Berini Hauntings by paranormal researchers, started shortly after Joe Berini moved his wife and two of her children from a former marriage into his ancestral New England home in the late 1970s. And hear why Balliet’s dad began weeping when asked if he thought of his son after hearing about an attack on a synagogue.

Now that we have the business end out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… and the Real Story of Christmas and the dark history of it’s traditionsHistory doesn’t record when the first Christmas was celebrated, but it was probably sometime in the fourth century CE, in the Roman Empire. What's sure is that the first historic record of the holiday is a calendar dating from 354 CE, belonging to a rich Roman Christian named Philocalus. That calendar tells us that on the same date - December 25 - another holiday was celebrated, marking the birth of Sol Invictus, “the Unconquered Sun.” That was a new pagan cult, worshiping a new sun deity. Both these holidays coincided with the Roman festival of Saturnalia, which had been celebrated from December 17 to December 24th. That was a festival celebrating the god Saturn, which – as we will see - contributed heavily to latter-day Christmas traditions. That’s right folks, Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory is correct, it’s Saturnalia, not the birth of Jesus. So then why December 25th? Scholars differ on why December 25, was chosen as the birth of Jesus, because it really wasn't. So this is your warning Bible thumpers, I’m about to piss you off with facts which will challenge your faith. Hippolytus, in the second century, was probably the first to propose this date. The New Testament doesn’t tell us when the birth took place: and the only clue the text gives us - "some shepherds staying out in the fields keeping watch over their flock by night" (Luke 2:8) actually implies that the birth took place in the spring or summer, as sheep would have been kept indoors during the cold winter nights.
